Exceeds all expectations. We were looking for a lunch place near Innisfree Gardens and came upon this jewel of a location. Imaginative, cheerful, and absolutely delicious and uniquely presented food. The warmth of this family-owned restaurant with its tiled interiors (even the restrooms were lavishly appointed--take a look even if you don't have to use them!) the colorful bar area and the spacious, individualized seating inside, and the multicolored umbrellas decorating the outside dining area will bring a smile to your face. The warmth and genuineness of the servers--(all part of the Azul family) are charming enough...but it was the presentation of the food that really stood out. Although what we ordered was by no means extravagant (Taco Salad with Chicken), how it was it was served and put together showed a unique perspective in cooking and dining. The chicken was tender, the dressing was extraordinary and the drinks (how many margarita types are there? They have them all!) I can't recommend this place enough. And the door to the entrance? I make the drive by every time I take my son to/from college... 8 or so times a year. I wish I didn't wait until his senior year. Finally stopped in and was not disappointed. Between the homemade salsa and great service. Then the burrito bowl came. The presentation and quality were outstanding. My wife's Mahi Mahi tacos were great as well. We are lucky to be near this high class Mexican restaurant. This is an upscale restaurant. You won't find tons of gooey cheese and cheap soupy red sauce here. The food is much more authentic with fresh ingredients. Even the restaurant-made chips and salsa are great. The wait staff is always the best, and the bar is a nice hang. You'll find bands here at times, including an open mic. The decor is lovely, unique, and tasteful. There is an outdoor patio secluded from the road. It's also nice that it's right off the taconic for those that are coming from a distance. The only thing I would change is that sometimes they have the bar lights set very bright. We have to request that they be dimmed. You really must try this place if you think all Mexican restaurants are the same. This one will disprove that theory! read more

Amazing food and great service. The guacamole was great. Three in our party had tacos - beef, carnitas, and shrimp - all very good. I had the enchiladas - carnitas and cheese - Christmas style with both red and green sauce. Highly recommend this dish and restaurant. read more

We went to lunch at La Puerta Azul - delicious! We were immediately given chips and awesome salsa (complimentary). My chicken enchiladas with Mole sauce were so scrumptious and plenty to take home for an extra meal. Service was pleasant and very fast. Great ambiance and the flautas were amazing. The only problem was that I took a gamble that didn't pay off with my entree getting a salmon based dish that just didn't mesh well with the other flavors. My wife and I stopped in for lunch on our way back from the race track. We have never been in this restaurant before... What a pleasant surprise. The interior is beautiful with a very authentic decor. We sat at the bar and had shots of excellent tequilas served by the owner. To start we had the arugula salad which was extremely well made, and then ordered fish tacos, which were delicious... We live approximately 100 miles away from this restaurant. However, I have to tell you, if you have a nice car and it's a nice day out and you want to take a ride, this restaurant is worth it. read more

The food was amazing! We got the portobello fajitas and the Carne Asada as a fajita plate. I highly recommend this place to anyone who likes authentic Mexican cuisine. The atmosphere was comfortable and the decor included a glass waterfall (see pic below) and we were able to have a conversation without having to yell. A solid three stars ! However, the lunch brunch menu is very limited. It looks authentic! Bright colors and decorations just like a Mexican cafe in Mexico. However the menu doesn't scream authentic Mexican food. Brunch was very limited. The menu for that matter was. We got the table side guacamole. He did it off to the side so we didn't witness the making but did notice it was 15.00. Tasty but was over priced for the portion . That seemed to follow through with everything else we had. We did order hot wings for our appetizer but the waiter forgot to place them in. I got the chorizo omelet. It was ok foot 14.00 but came with great fresh fruit. My husband go the Lpa burrito which he asked if he could get it without the wrap and they did accommodate that request and placed it in a bowl, for 17.00 that he said was very good. The bloody Maria's were tasty for 8.00 but the lemons,, lime, and celery was clearly left over from the night before and way to much ice ! 3 stars. I meet a group of friends there from time to time because it is very convenient for us. The portions are large and tasty, drinks are expensive, but well made. My issue is the rest rooms. They are not well maintained. I was there last night and they are dirty and not maintained during the evening. Many surfaces throughout the place are sticky. They need to do a deep cleaning and assign someone to keep an eye on the restrooms during service. I did speak to a manager and someone emptied the overflowing trash cans and that's about it. read more

My wife, 16 month old son and I stopped at La Puerta Azul on Monday, August 5th, 2019 on our way home from upstate NY. We requested a seat on the patio because it was a nice day and we had our dog with us. Once we were seated we noticed the cigarette butts on the patio and a bunch broken glass all over the patio. We told our server about it and he had someone come and just clean one small area of glass. I don't know how it got there but I can guess. Two years ago this place used to be a place where you can get a great meal. It was always clean and the service top notch. I don't think I can say that now. Absolutely delicious food and great service. My friends and I stopped by yesterday after visiting the Innisfree Garden nearby. The decor inside the restaurant is very lovely. We sat outside to enjoy the lovely weather. The owner who served us was very kind and friendly as were the other staff. I had the fajitas which were absolutely phenomenal. And because it was our birthdays, we decided to opt for desserts and the churros with Mexican chocolate were divine. Yum. My friends and I live about 70 miles away but have discussed coming back to enjoy some delicious Mexican food here again. Truly a great experience and a nice birthday celebration :) read more

This was a great find on the way home from the Berkshires, right off the Taconic. We were greeted immediately by the owner, Raffi, and seated in a beautiful, spacious outdoor area enclosed by shrubbery and floribunda. The food was exceptionally good. This is not your typical TexMex. The food was abundant and healthy. You can eat low carb and low fat here if you want and leave feeling nourished and deliciously sated! Dining at La Puerta Azul is muy okay. I've always enjoyed it but have never had anything I would have considered exceptionally delicious or exceptionally awful. The food is traditional, well prepared, and well presented. But I've always felt it could have a little more intense flavor. Admittedly, I always choose the milder sauces when I order, but when we compared dinners tonight, we also couldn't find a significant difference in the spiciness of the green versus the red chili sauces. As for our meals tonight, chicken and pork enchiladas, they were fine, though the pork in mine was ever so slightly fatty. The side dish of beans was a generous amount, though slightly chewy, and again I would have been okay with a little more zing. I suspect, though, had I dined later in the evening, I would have felt the beans - having slow-cooked a bit longer - would be just what I wanted. It's also quite possible they prefer if you like a spicier bean you add sauces yourself. The staff here work like a well oiled machine. They couldn't work better together if they were choreographed. While I'm a bit ho-hum here about the food, other things, for me, round out the experience. First is their salsa. It's got a hint of garlic and a slight kick, and I can't stop eating it (though I would appreciate a little more cilantro in it). Next is the overall atmosphere. The restaurant has several unique dining areas, all of which are quite nice in which to sit, plus that interesting waterfall. Finally, there's a nice variety of drink offerings, including a wide selection of tequilas, interesting specialty margaritas, and other past promotions including happy hours and drink-with-your-meal specials (you have to check for these, they change from time to time). So for a dining experience here, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. read more

I have had the pleasure of eating at La Puerta Azul several times. It has become my favorite Mexican restaurant. I find the interior to be really fun and inventive. The atmosphere is laid back, but kind of sexy. There is a lot of cast iron fixtures, dark wood, and low lighting. In addition, there is a very cool water feature to walk across as you go to the dining room. I like that there are hammocks outside where you can sit and wait. There's also a sunken seating area in the center the restaurant. It has about 10 tables along the edges with fun, colorful cushions against the backs. There is also a separate section for private dining that can be closed behind a curtain. I have tried the empanadas, chicken tamales, as well as the steak and chicken tacos. I found the tamales to be bland, but the steak tacos and empanadas (maybe the best I've had) to be full of flavor. My absolute favorite entree here is the chicken fajitas. The chicken is flavorful and juciy and the vegetables always have a nice char to them. I have also sampled the chicken burrito and found it to be flavorful an generous in portion size. A plus is that dinner comes with warm chips and salsa, which is very fresh and more on the mild side (the waiters are happy to provide refills of both). I have also tried their frozen and on-the-rocks margaritas in several flavors, and usually get the original on the rocks. They never use mix. Definitely try the blood orange --delicious and unique. I have (almost) always had good service here and solid food. When it gets really busy on the weekends, service sometimes suffers, but I usually don't mind as long as they keep the chips coming. Especially exciting is that their chef was featured on, and won, an episode of Chopped! La Puerta is definitely worth a visit! I always request to dine here when I am in the Poughkeepsie area! read more

I recently had a wonderful lunch at la puerta azul! my brother and I unexpectedly found this Latino style restaurant when driving south on the Taconic heading home from a ski trip in VT. The owner is very friendly and welcoming. The decor is bright, colorful and very festive! The restaurant is spacious and there is lots of seating for small or large groups. The menu has many choices and my bbq pork (carnitas) quesadilla was delicious and my brother loved his carnitas. The portions were generous and served with a lovely presentation. I highly recommend this restaurant, and although it is a 50 min. drive from me, I will definitely be returning! read more

My wife and I have come here three times since we moved to Millbrook. On this trip (our third and final) we came in at around 4:30pm on a Friday. We were not unexpectedly the only guests at this odd hour. The hostess was very nice and seated us right away, gave us some tasty chips and salsa, then introduced herself as our waitress as well. My wife and I each ordered different style margaritas and we got a small order of guacamole to start. The guac was delicious and fresh but unfortunately this was the last part of our food and drink adventure that was pleasurable. Both margaritas were disgusting and tasted like I was literally squeezing a slightly diluted version of squeeze bottle lime juice into my mouth. The burritos were just OK because of the blandness of the steak and the lack of any type of sauce or spices in the burrito. Somewhere mid-meal the kitchen began BLASTING rap music which intertwined with the restaurant music coming over the house speaker system to create a highly undesirable atmosphere that left my wife and I looking for the check. This was possibly the worst part of the experience because the prices of the food can only be attributed to the quality of the atmosphere as the food is mediocre at best. Once they took the nice atmosphere away I was left being significantly overcharged for sitting somewhere I no longer wanted to be eating food I could take or leave. Bottom Line: Spend $25 on margarita mix and burrito ingredients at the grocery store and make it yourself. You'll save $75 and enjoy better drinks, better food, and a better atmosphere. read more

Decor is nice, waitstaff good...However, no one asked how everything was... I had the burrito bowl. (No wrap) While my food tasted good, ( of course ir did, oil tastes fantastic as it clogs your arteries) it was completely drowned in oil. Actually had to pour it out (as best I could) into the rice bowl. There was still a ton left afterwards... Bathrooms are small. You can do your business while washing yourself....thats if there was any soap...there wasn't. Makes me wonder about the people cooking my food... read more

Went there 2x. The first time I loved the service and food. Then last night went there with my extended family: a party of 15. It was happy hour but we had a table. We were SCOLDED by a rude manager for getting drinks at the bar for less money than from ordering at our table. They should be able to figure out the tips so bartenders and table staff get tips for drinks. I've never heard of a place that has happy hour for just the bar! Not our fault! This was my sister's birthday and she was embarrassed and it started the night with a down note. The rest of the night was ok but the service was lacking for such a large party of people; the drinks were watered down and the food only ok with small portions. Vastly overpriced. Money is all they seem to care about. I will not be dining there anymore and now they have lost 15 people and our friends as well. Bad experience and would not recommend. read more
