The $3 taco Tuesdays tacos are basic, and by that I mean, ground beef, shredded beef or chicken, no special tacos. And they look like a significant upgrade to a Taco Bell taco with lettuce, cheese and tomato. Basically, what I would consider a gringo taco. Can have them soft or hard. La Catrina serves more-and-less traditional Mexican fare with generous portions and good service. I especially liked the size of the margaritas, the large number of warm tortilla chips brought to the table (and refilled frequently), and the flavor of my chicken fajitas. RIght off the bat were that margarita and the chips and salsa. The salsa seemed pretty plain, mostly a tomato base with lots of chopped onion. This was also accompanied by a plate of mashed beans, something I've not seen elsewhere. Shortly after we were seated, I did notice one of the waitresses taking photos of our very large group (20+) on her own phone - not on the behalf of one of us - and I have to wonder if it was for the restaurant's social media, or something else. The servers were very attentive, being sure to ask the right questions as we ordered items. Food and drink all came out quickly. My chicken fajita platter came with steaming warm tortillas, more than I've typically gotten at other Mexican restaurants, and a separate plate with huge quantities of the fixin's, including a sizeable amount of guacamole. The salsa was super fresh and more of a pico and it came with this AMAZING bean dip. Wowwww I could have ordered a whole bowl of that bean dip. I was craving Mexican food and although I'd been to La Catrina to dine in twice (bad both times), I thought I'd give them one more try. I ordered a Chili Con Queso Burrito with chicken for $19. It was a foot-long fat burrito, but only had half chicken and half rice. Not a refried bean to be seen although that was one of the ingredients listed. The Con Queso sauce tasted like it was out of a can and there was no pico de Gallo or lettuce on top, just a half teaspoon of chopped tomato and a few pieces of lettuce. It came with a bag of chips that were so over-salted I threw them out. This will be my last visit to La Catrina. read more

It's Cinco de Mayo and the New Mexican restaurant in town is open. We gotta go right?!! Our wait was 40 minutes but honestly it's a special Mexican holiday and everyone has margaritas and tacos in the brain. There's actually a ton of tables so it's fine. I'm glad they're doing well. The waitstaff is SUPER busy but everyone is nice and friendly. Many different people checked on us and it was great. The usual chips and salsa came to the table and they also brought refried beans! I really like beans. It's that little bit extra that goes a long way. The salsa was watery. Next are the giant margaritas...delicious with a decent pour. I like that too. I ordered the La Catrina enchiladas. It came with three: one cheese with tomatillo sauce, one chicken with mole sauce and the third was ground beef with a cheese sauce. Normally I'm picky about mole sauce but I'm happy to report its delicious. The enchiladas are stuffed well and they're generous with the sauces. The only thing is my cheese enchilada was not all goey and melty. Their rice is delicious...perfect temperature and flavorful. We got the Camerones de ajo appetizer and that was the size of an entree. Excellent flavor and plump shrimp. I ordered a Fajita Quesadilla with shrimp. This blew me away the flavor and combination was simply amazing. See the photos below if you leave hungry something is wrong with you!!. I will be back more often. Nice sized bar with plenty of margaritas to choose from. Staff was very nice and welcoming. I'm actually writing this review in the restaurant at the end of my meal and all of a sudden the entire staff comes out with a candle with ice cream singing happy birthday to my wife in Spanish it was unbelievably unrehearsed but much appreciated. After a full day of visiting both The FDR Home and The Vanderbilt Home, we started to build an appetite. Never been to the are before, we had no idea what to have for dinner and where to go. Thanks to our friends at @yelp we found that La Catrina had great reviews and got into our budget. Long story short, we're glad we stopped in for dinner. Yum! We ordered the $10 Sunday special Nachos, Whole Fried Tilapia, and Las Tres Catrinas Fajita. I can only describe our dinner as having Huge portions with surprising fresh/bold flavors. My only issue was with the service. While, everyone was very friendly, our waiter seemed very distracted. Our food came out very quickly... In fact, appetizers and dinner came out at the same time; which is a big no-no in my books. We had to flag down other waiters to get service, which was a little annoying when we can see our own waiter on the phone at the bar. Also - when we were ready to check out, he took a really long time to get our credit card back. Other than that, the food was great and I'll definitely come back again. Tonight we visited the brand new La Catrina. It is a beautiful building, very well decorated, and modern. The place is on point in terms of theme. All the decor matches throughout and is colorful and welcoming. We walked in at 5pm on Cinco de Mayo. They approached us immediately and sat us in 2 minutes. The servers were attentive and it was very busy. He took our drink orders and appetizer order. They dropped off chips with salsa and refried beans. Our drinks came. We shared a guava margarita which was great but had a lot of ice. We also got a flight of watermelon, kiwi, and frozen melon. I enjoyed all of them. The frozen one had a nice foam on top too. For an appetizer we got the guacamole made spicy. It was the perfect amount of spice and the avocado was obviously fresh. Next, we ordered dinner. I got the fajita shrimp soft tacos. They were fresh and delicious. It came with rice and refried beans. I took the leftovers home and it was a generous portion. My boyfriend got a steak chimichanga. He loved it and also had extras that he took home. We couldn't resist so we also got dessert. We got the fried ice cream. It was vanilla with Frosted Flakes like breading.
