The Long Version: My husband and I were chilling in our hotel when my husband had a hankering for some shawarma. He didn't want to go too far, and I encouraged him to try a new-to-us place, lol. So a quick search led him to Shawarmaz. Shawarmaz is a Canadian company that started 2013 in Montreal. It has several locations but they are all in the Greater Montreal Area. My husband got the beef shawarma in a pita $9.79. They have the option of getting your shawarma in Saj bread or a baguette and those options are more expensive. He got lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, turnips and onions. For his sauces he got hummus, spicy garlic and chipotle. He enjoyed the shawarma. I had a bite so I could review it (I also went with him so I could see the restaurant and take pictures) haha. I thought it was pretty good. They give you a decent amount of protein. And the beef was flavourful and not gristly. I was surprised that the wrap was not too spicy considering the sauces he chose. The decor is fast food restaurant-like. Service was good but it did take a while for the food, although it's likely because there was a pretty long line up. Review #205 (2025)

I kept on thinking they were trying to mess with me, but I couldn't even tell you how. The food was very, very good, don't get me wrong. And the portions are gigantic. We were confidently assured the food was completely nut-free and that extra care would be taken. However, this was not the case. My friend always tests her food first, and after a single bite, she suffered an allergic reaction. When we alerted the staff to this issue, their response was shocking. Instead of checking if she was okay, they immediately became defensive and accusatory, asking "Why do you not want to pay?". We were insulted, accused of lying, and confronted by a staff member who aggressively argued it wasn't their fault. We ultimately had to pay the bill in full for food we could not and did not eat, just so we could leave. I am shocked by such poor and defensive service. To be made to feel at fault after such a frightening and vulnerable event is completely unacceptable. To prioritize a bill over a customer's life and deny a mistake when there was an active allergic reaction is appalling and dangerous. If you have food allergies, please avoid this establishment for your own safety.

I chose this place for several reasons - they were easily able to accommodate our party of 12 (there was no back and forth to book something special), the menu looked like it would appeal to different palates, and offered live music which I thought would be a nice addition to the evening. That being said, I made plans to dine here for our second (and last) dinner of the weekend. Modavie sits in Old Montreal, which worked out since we didn't really spend any time in that area over the weekend so it was good to explore before and after our meal. The restaurant is quite large - it spans two floors and has multiple dining rooms. Decor is modern-ish with semi-exposed fixtures and a dark color scheme. When booking, I was asked whether I wanted to sit in a room that had live music or not - I thought that would bring a fun element to the dinner so chose a table near the music. The menu is described as being French, though I would say there are also touches of other areas of Europe. Lamb is their specialty, and is in several of their dishes - they even have a section solely dedicated to it. Since we were such a large group, I decided to order the apps for the table: fried calamari, escargot, charcuterie boards, and braised lamb poutine. Everything was good, with the highlight for me being the poutine. I'll be honest I was kinda poutined out after sampling so many throughout the weekend, but this was still enjoyable which says something about the quality. In addition to the lamb section, they had a variety of pastas and other mains to choose from. I decided to get the Basque chicken which was served with a piperade and potatoes. This was really good - the chicken was juicy and the piperade added great layers of flavor and texture. Most of us were full so we bypassed dessert. While the food was good, I wouldn't say it was 5-star worthy - but you won't get a bad meal here; the dishes are solid. What was the most memorable aspect of the evening for me, though, was the service. Iman was outstanding - she made sure we were taken care of the entire evening, was on top of all of our orders, and was really the epitome of professionalism and hospitality. She made the experience for me. Overall, we had a great time at Modavie - the solid food, cool setting, and killer service make this a standout in Old Montreal.

The owner and his staff of welcoming and friendly and are there to explain the menu and even gave us some sample to try. First dish was the hummus. It reminded me when I was back touring the Middle East. The hummus was so fresh and you can taste the ingredients with a hint of lemon juice. It was so good we order another one. Second dish Muhuhammara This is a dish with garlic, pepper, walnuts and outlive oil. This was a hit. I could not believe how good it tasted and how fresh it tatsted Third Roasted cauliflower This is one of my favorite things to eat and they did it perfectly. Roasted and seasoned just the way I like it. They put a touch of tahini on top. I would of gotten more but they sold out. 4th dish Grilled chicken in lemon Usually the chicken is dry. Not here it was supper moist and the Lemmon sauce was right on point. Not to overpowering. It blended well with all the spicies. This is a must try if you like Mediterranean food. not only is the food amazing the staff go out of the way to make you feel welcome
