This was my second time visiting La Rumba, and I'm somewhat conflicted so this review technically would be a 2.5-star rating. Although I have a go-to bar/restaurant in this section of Wheaton, I wanted to expand my bar hopping palate. I'll say that La Rumba is a very vibrarnt establishment. As the name might suggest, the bar/restaurant is frequented primarily by Latinos. Here's where my conflicted review comes in. I'll admit that upon entering La Rumba on both occasions, I got the sense that many of the patrons and bartenders were like "Qué está haciendo aquí". No one was super rude, but I have a feeling of being persona non grata. However, after a drink or two, other folks and the bartenders began to "warm up" to me. I'll admit that I had to be slightly aggressive to get the attention of one of the bartender. For both of my visits, I sat in the the middle of the bar and waited several minutes for someone to ask if I wanted anything. Actually, an older woman bartender, who was preparing drinks for others, had to direct another bartender to serve me. The weird piece, once I starting singing (to myself) a song in Spanish that was being played on sound system, a regular started chatting with me. Then, once I started speaking Spanish, he was very friendly. I wonder if this is one of those places where folks only prefer to interact with their own at first, but all is good once they get to know you. Although no one was outwardly rude to me (at least in earshot of where I was sitting), many were not very welcoming. This feeling is something that I've experienced at another Latin bar/restaurant in this area of Wheaton. That said, I do not think it should be that hard to spend my money in an establish that really doesn't not want anything to do with me. On a positive note, I thought the drink prices were very fair, and my bartender did make my beverages very strong. read more

When someone asks you what food you are in the mood for and you are in the Silver Spring Wheaton area...your immediate response should be Mexican and your destination needs to be La Rumba. With a super friendly and skilled staff, beautiful murals on the wall, elevated romantic seating overlooking the bar....the ambiance in La Rumba is perfecto. We just finished our meal at La Rumba restaurant and to say we are disappointed is an understatement. The restaurant was empty except for the bar (we assumed they were regulars) and at first the service was fine. We had our child so we ordered his food first. We had to remind the server to bring his drink (not a big deal at all) and he really liked his nuggets. After he had finished eating he was quietly watching his tablet when he said, "mommy... BUG!!" And, sure enough a small roach was crawling on our table. I used the butcher paper to kill the bug and to show management. While waiting on the check my husband saw a 2nd roach. And, it was crawling on our table. We alerted the server to tell her about the roach and to show her the first roach I killed. She put her hand over her mouth, dropped off our bill, and left. There was no apology. There was no making it right. There was no real acknowledgement of the situation. Now we weren't looking for a free meal, but we should have at least been comped something. who knows how many more roaches would have crawled on our table if we stayed longer. Now the food was mostly good. My child had chicken nuggets and french fries. He seemed to enjoy his nuggets and his Capri Sun (which was oddly room temp). My husband had a seafood pasta that was served with bread. He seemed to enjoy his food. I tried 3 tacos (chicken, pork, and beef). I only ate the beef/steak one. It was "meh". The steak was a bit overcooked and tough, but otherwise just an unremarkable taco. There are better taco trucks in the area so I would never order these again. I gave them two stars because my kid and hubby enjoyed their meal, but took off major points because of the roaches in the establishment. Based on the size I would suggest they get an exterminator as these roaches were born in the restaurant and didn't just walk in from outside. We really hoped to like it. We just moved to the area and wanted a go to spot. However, we won't be back and will continue to look for a better spot (with better food and no roaches). read more

So the food here is amazing but customer service will vary based on your race. I went 4 times total. Once with a white woman, once with a Dominican woman and twice with African American men. The two times with women were fine but the 1st time I went in with my black friend, the wait staff were very rude. The 2nd time, which happened 2/21/20, I asked if we could sit down and they simply told us "no". I won't be back. PS: Spanish is my 2nd language and I heard comments about my friends. read more

Food is always fresh, drinks are very good, and service is always great too. I come more regularly than I post. But let me be clear, he food is very good. I think this place is overlooked. We dined here on Labor Day and ordered the plato parrillada for two. It was supposed to come w ribs but was not served w any. We asked and they said no. Checked and it was indeed supposed to include ribs. Service was poor. A very long wait for all services. Wanted to like this place. We didn't. My boyfriend and I came out here for church and went looking for a nice place to eat afterwards. We wanted something sit down and decently priced. We yelped places around us and found La Rumba. Lucked into this restaurant on July 19, 2021. We were looking for a place for lunch with outdoor seating and something a vegetarian could eat. Do NOT go here expecting a good meal. I ordered cheese enchiladas, and I specifically requested tomatillo sauce, not red enchilada sauce as the menu stated. The waitress warned me the tomatillo sauce might be too hot, but I told her that I wanted it anyway because I eat very spicy food. However she didn't understand me, apparently. (Not to be a hater, but the gal didn't speak good English) Anyway, I didn't get any sauce (red or green) on my enchiladas. Also, the cheese wasn't even melted on the inside of the enchiladas. Not to mention they added Romaine lettuce (not iceberg) to my plate. And the sour cream was runny, like they made it stretch with some water. My husband ordered chicken chimichangas and hee said there was no spice to it, whatsoever. He shared my general sense of disgust with the place, as well. The place smells like mothballs, and it looks sorta dirty. Plus their music was too, too loud. Also, the waitress put us at a table near one of the TVs which was blaring a soccer game, and just from the TV volume alone, I could barely talk to my husband. Came here for a soccer banquet. Service was poor. Server kept retaking the order. Only half of the simple orders were right. Ordered pupusas they had very little cheese, didn't taste good. OK, so no one had reviewed this place, so we almost did not go in when I looked it up on Yelp. We walked in, looked at the menu and most of us thought, "eh, let's try something else." But my son was wiser and said we should give it a try. What can I say except I wish we lived closer! Very good Mexican/Salvadoran food. The nachos has just the right amount and right mix of cheese, my husband said the mixed fajitas were awesome. Tasty quesadillas. But ohh, the pinto beans and rice--the pinto beans spiced just perfectly. The food was not super special --just fresh and good--and if just for food and service, I would have given it four stars but I gave it a five stars because for nachos, quesadillas, tacos, a burrito, mixed fajitas, three sprites, two beers and two perfectly mixed Cuervo margaritas the bill came only to $74. We were so happy with the bill (on the heels of a meal downtown a few days earlier for 2 that cost us twice that!) that we left a 30% tip, though service was fine but nothing special. read more

My husband, a good friend and I went to this Bar. You should truly avoid it, the waitresses put something in our drinks, we can not remember the night, and we drank very little. We are Happy hour aficionados, and what happened here had never happened to us in our life. We do not remember the night, they stole $300 in cash, and they took my husbands ID, his credit cards and some very important documents from me and my friend. I have never in my life had this happen before, none of us remember how we got home, but my sitter says that we did not pick up the boys until midnight, we have gone to happy hour every Friday for the last decade and this is something that never happened to us before, we are not heavy drinkers , we got there at 4pm and did not pick up the boys until midnight? And they still charged my credit card.
