Finding vegan food in Mazatlan isn't easy. In fact, La Ruta Vegana is one of only two fully vegan restaurants in Centro Historico Mazatlan. But it's so good that we ended up there twice for dinner during our recent visit to this vibrant city. The restaurant feels a bit like you have been invited into someone's home. An open door welcomes you in, and you are swiftly greeted with a friendly smile and shown to a table. The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed, and a cat sometimes strolls in through the open door to have a look around. La Ruta's menu includes a salad, several pasta options, pizza, hamburgers, dessert, and of course an array of Mexican dishes. We opted for Mexican dishes each time, obviously. FYI, most of the servers speak some English, but it's helpful to have a translator app if you have questions about something in particular. On our first visit, we were given a free appetizer of a soy-based ceviche. We were starving, and it really hit the spot! We washed it down with a refreshing agua fresca (guanabana aka soursop). My order of quesadillas de asada (made of soy meat) were delicious, but my husband's fajitas (made of seitan) were out of this world! The flavor of the meat was incredible -- succulent, juicy, well seasoned, and just slightly fatty to really give that meaty feeling to it. On our return visit, they were sadly out of the fajitas so I chose the asada tacos. They were great, and my husband ordered a huge plate of nachos that were quite tasty. They had a homemade cheese sauce on them that was lighter tasting and seemed to be made of vegetables. Again our server was really sweet and friendly, and we enjoyed our visit. I highly recommend visiting this lovely restaurant. We came by around 3:45 pm. The entrance door was locked, so we knocked, and they let us in. They took our orders and then brought out ceviche de soya with chips. It was delicious and held us over until the food came about 30 minutes later. The food was good, the service was good and the decor was very cute and cozy. There was even a cat napping in a tree pot out front. I would recommend anyone to try it. read more

Lourdes and I had the taco trio sampler. The chicharrón taco was the best. Chorizo and asada were good but chicharrón was like wow! Awesome vegan food even if you are not vegan you will enjoy. read more

Most amazing food in all of Mazatlan. Me and my partner went there, and we're pleasantly surprised at the beautiful selection that those working women had available for us. Almost all the staff are a progressive young women who take passion in providing not only an environment, but food that is full of compassion and humanity toward all beings. Even if you're not vegan I highly recommend Checking this place out, as not only was it affordable, the food was creative and flavorful. My husband really loved it for the food and ambience. The menu is totally outstanding. I would highly recommend this restaurant for vegans as well as vegetarians. Ambience is very romantic and apparently they also accommodate exclusive romantic date lunch/ dinner in case you plan to surprise your someone special to a candle lit dinner or something. But not being a fan of vegan food myself, here is my constructive review. We tried four different dishes (taco/ burger/ fajita/ baked potato) each one had soya in it. So even though each dish tasted great the base and the underlying flavor was the same. Maybe, they can introduce more dishes which do not contain soya and still taste equally good. But for now, this is the only go to place for vegans and vegetarians when you are in Mazatlan. read more

Support this great place! A/c, funky atmosphere, great music. Loved the ceviche. We also ordered nuggets (good, not crispy) and salad (delicious!) tacos (yum!) deshebrada (good, very meaty) vegandog (ok, too much bun to dog ratio)_and brownie with nuez ice cream (brownie OK, but I'm a brownie snob, ice cream was tasty). It's not a far walk from the plazuela. We originally tried to go to delirium taco and I'm so glad they were closed. Not every vegan place is amazing but this place is a winner. This place definitely has heart! The #plantpowered food here is guided by philosophy. I had some communication issues here (lack of competence on my part). I wasn't that hungry to begin with. I really enjoyed the portobello on baguette and the appetizer, which I wasn't expecting. There is no alcohol, but the flavored tea was refreshing. I wish I has ordered the pizza. It has a potato cheeze and a rice crust. I saw one go to another table and it looked and smelled amazing. This place is worth checking out for a healthy and unpretentious meal. read more

Went there once and had the pizza and the nachos and tacos. All the food was lacking. The pizza was just barely cooked, and I had ordered sausage on it but what I got was vegan hot dog slices, GROSS! The nachos were lacking any kind of sauces or anything, they were just a mess of chips and fake cheese and meat. No salsa, guacamole or hot sauce or anything. And the tacos were good but could have used something more than just the fake meat. I was the only one there for dinner service that night, and the reason this restaurant had no customers should have been clear to me. However, in poor judgement since it is the only vegan restaurant in downtown I tried going back again to give it another try 3 times. But every other time that I went the place was closed. The place is not open for all of lunch or dinner service. Even if they say online they are open, they would be closed when I got there. I finally gave up trying when the third time I made sure they were open, and then went in to find that the dining room was open, but they told me that the kitchen was closed and they turned me away again! At 7:30 in the evening and they had closed the kitchen and turned me away! Absolutely Unbelievable. Never in my life have I ever encountered such a lackluster restaurant. They obviously don't care at all about their customers. Which is why they don't have any. And I recommend not trying to become one, unless you enjoy having your business turned away while you are hungry. Or by some slim chance that they decide to be open and serve you, getting served very lackluster food. This restaurant has a monopoly on vegan dining in downtown, which has led them to completely take what business they do get for granted. There is such a lack of service in this restaurant, and the quality of food if you are able to even get it is also lacking. So what is the point in going to such a place? read more

Absolutely delicious! I went with my Sister and Niece who is vegan. So far my favorite meal while visiting Mazatlan. In addition to my meal of spectacular tacos, I ordered pico de gallo and chips which are not on the menu. The owner graciously agreed to make it for me and it was awesome. This is a great place! Very cute ambiance/decor, and the menu is in both spanish and english. The ceviche they gave us as an appetizer was very good. The menu consists of sandwiches, burgers, seitan fajitas, nachos, tacos etc. Good music, good food, nice people. I recommend this place if you are vegan/vegetarian, or looking for a meal that will satisfy, but not make you feel too heavy. read more

Delicious vegan food and friendly service. A very short walk from the Plaza Machado and worth it. Great prices too. The menu is a little limited thus only 4 stars but it is good eatin'.
