Stopped by with my fiancé who had a $900 "active transportation" work benefit to spend within 24 hrs. Went in to this very chill, off the beaten path skate shop to grab some quad roller skates for my daughter. It's tucked into a diverse neighborhood just before Little Armenia on Santa Monica Blvd. Parking is a challenge. The shop is nothing fancy to look at, but the selection of boards, wheels and equipment is pretty impressive. There seem to be boxes and boxes of goodies in the back. The obligatory skate videos are on the TV. The selection of roller skates seems basic, but it felt (to me) to be adequate for any level. It's been a while since I bought rollerskates, so I was shocked by the price, but they seemed reasonable after a cursory look online afterwards. The staff was very courteous, especially considering I'm an old timer, and extremely helpful with advice on what to buy. All in all, I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for skate equipment our giant city of Angels. read more

David is an old-school owner who knows his craft and cuts the drama with sheer expertise and great service. I pulled out my quads the other day and noticed they were a bit loose. I went online to found L.A. Skate. DON'T BE FREAKED OUT - THEY ARE OPEN ALTHOUGH THE AWNINGS COVER THE WINDOW. I emailed them to see if they were open and lo and behold in less than one hour I received a phone call to com on down. David looked at my skates and I explained my issue and stated to give him 1/2 an hour. He upgraded the bushes on the wheel and presto I no longer have to worry about wobbling or falling unless it is self-inflicted. Anyway, these types of businesses are rare where the owners give you confidence in their solution to your problem. If you into skating, they are deserving of your business. Easy to locate, just west of the 101 freeway on the north side of the street and plenty of meter parking. Best of all they are affordable. read more

The man with the blond hair helped me through everything, and the place was friendly as well. I loved the place. Here's what's up, I have a few longboards and skateboards but my oldest one started to creek and annoy me. Despite my best efforts of putting beeswax in the pivot cup and on the ends of the bushings (usually works, but this time) it still creaked a bit. I go to a few skateboard shops, but left empty handed since none stocked longboard bushings. Of course I would rather support a shop so just before I lost all hope and decided to order online I stopped in here. The place looked promising on yelp, but was an hour away from where I live. I went ahead and stopped in and lo and behold Dave had them. Finally I found a place where there is a knowledgeable salesman who knows his stuff. I'm telling you right now, I've walked in quite a few skate shops where the dudes don't know about longboards to the point where they try and sell me skateboard bushings, not the case here. Dave is totally knowledge and even shared some stories with us about LA skate and how he helped create trucks which was awesome. He didn't try to up-sell us on anything and was really easygoing so I was surprised when he rang me up for 10?! Bushings usually don't sell for that much and when I asked about the pricing he said he was charging me 4 dollars for labor. I'm sorry, but I've personally never been to a shop that charges for labor, let alone 40% of the total cost being the amount of labor (it's literally one screw, two if you count both trucks). He did deduct the labor fee when I contested without any hassle. I wish I could have given this place five stars, because other than that it's a 5 star place. Definitely recommend stopping in, but people, just put your own skateboards/longboards together... it's so easy. read more

Called a day before and was given two quotes over the phone. 1 for replacing indoor wheels with outdoor wheels and a quote if i just wanted to get an outdoor skate. I arrived the following business day and the quotes I was given over the phone magically changed. The guy tried to blame that I spoke to a part time employee ect or as if i called the wrong store. I pulled out my phone and recited the number. I chose not to purchase anything just based on his lack of service. I asked to try on a skate in a particular color in a size 8. He brings out a size 5 and then seems confused as to why he did. Didn't pay attention to detail. Wasn't really helpful and didn't offer to order the state i was actually interested in. I was then recommended to go to big five sporting goods for skates knowing that isn't the quality skate that i wanted lol. read more

Wow. I am just SO pleased with Dave's excellent service. I called ahead after I chose this skate shop randomly from a Google search. And I feel so lucky to have called this one first. Over the phone, Dave was so informative. He held a specific pair of roller skates for me while I headed over to try them on. Once there, he helped me by letting me try on a few pair, and he also gave me tons of great advice (this was my first ever time buying brand new roller skates). He really took his time, wasn't a pushy sales person, and explained things in a very informative and useful way. I bought a pair of black Sure Grip Fame skates (plus custom wheels), a safety pad pack, and a skate leash. He threw in a free tshirt shirt was awesome. He was super nice and patient with my lack of knowledge about roller-skates, he took his time and found what was left of the inventory in my size. I came yesterday... He was such a professional, and very accomodating. I couldn't get them yesterday because I needed to check the size with different socks... I came back today, and Connor helped me and was so knowledgable about skates and again was super patient with my indecision and helping me find skates that worked for me... I FINALLY FOUND A PAIR, thanks to their help. *RIGHT NOW ITS HARD TO FIND QUALITY ROLLERSKATES ANYWHERE**AND IM A SIZE 11 in WOMEN** They were awesome and professional... I wish I took a picture but that place but it is 100% a fire hazard. They had so much merchandise that my son and I were left with a small "hallway" to walk through. Honestly it felt like a hoarding house. I had a stroller but I couldn't imagine if someone with a wheelchair went in. I could tell that was the owner in the far right of the isle, on the corner using the computer... He kinda just looked at my son and I like we were an inconvenience to him. We were the only customers in the store so how he didn't give us a quick hello was really awkward. Especially because he was literally right there. The whole experience was unsettling. Not to mention the fact **most** of the merchandise has dust! I really wanted to support "the oldest LA skate shop" so I bought from there really small selection of roller skate wheels... The purchase felt like more charity than anything. They advertise selling both roller skate gear and skateboarding gear so word to the wise - go somewhere else for roller skate gear. read more

I was putting on my skates the other day and was surprised to find the entire toe stop for my left skate was missing! I'm still not sure how I didn't notice when that actually happened. Dave was very helpful in finding the right toe stop and installing it. The price was very reasonable and I ended up buying a few extra just in case. read more

Dave was so helpful in searching for and providing roller skate options for my boyfriend, who wears a size 16 shoe. Getting skates this large is nearly impossible, and he spent a half hour on the phone with me going through all the custom options, the pros and cons of all those options, and then put aside a size 15 factory made Sure-Grip pair for him just in case they might fit. We came in and the skates were ready to go, and surprisingly, they fit! Dave will make sure you are taken care of and not rushed into anything. Would recommend! read more

Dave KNOWS HIS SHIT. Damn! He's been selling skates and skateboards since 1979, and he easily answered every question I had, plus some I hadn't thought of. His shop is small, crammed to the gills with decks and shelves and I don't know what, but if he doesn't have what you want, he'll order it, and once he has it, he'll tweak it for you and give you advice on it. I bought speed skates from him. He measured my feet no less than four different ways (including width) and treated me very well, despite my telling him immediately that I intended to buy a low-end skate. Both the Derby Dolls and Angel City Derby Girls have fliers posted on the wall, and they trust Dave with their skates. There was no question that he knew what he was doing and wasn't bullshitting me in any way; furthermore, he's a nice guy. Can't tell you about buying skateboards there, but he has piles of decks, and a bunch of different kinds of trucks and wheels. There are signed posters on the walls from pro teams, and he knows those skaters. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because I wasn't sure there were enough skates present; no doubt Dave knows what's good, and he suggested to me a skate I was already pretty sure I wanted (Boxer), but it'd be nice to be able to look over different kinds and try them on before choosing. The store's actually below street level, so you're very likely to pass it, and it does have a tiny parking lot. If you're like me, you'll get lost the second you leave and never make it back to the 5 south. read more

LA. Skate Co. is the only place I go for skates. Dave the owner is awesome! He has been working with me with quad skates since I started rolling in derby. The last pair of skates I got from him were custom built. They rule, and have aluminum hubs! They are indoor skates, I am a speed demand with these little numbers he made for me. He is fair, informative and knows what he is doing. I really liked him. I would highly recommend this shop. The Dave experience must be had. He is the man! Plus he always gives me cool stickers when I go there! His place is tricky and easily missed. So if you go keep an eye out! I also think the price range fluctuates depending on your order. read more

Thieves. Purchased high quality bearings, 8 total for 4 wheels. Looks like they only installed 2 of the 8. Here's how I found out: Bearings got dirty, all but 1 wheel would spin. Took off all the bearings to clean them. The bearings on the spinning wheel were the ones I bought. The other 6 were super cheap generic bearings. Stole at least $75 from my 12 year old son who saved up to buy this board. If you shop here I'd recommend building the board and installing the bearings yourself. Can't trust LA Skate Co! read more

I just started inline skating; only been 13 days, so I am a total newbie. Drove about 2.7 miles from work to LA Skate Co. after reading some reviews. I came here in hopes they have a rectangular nut; lost it the day after falling too much. Long story short, they didn't have parts for inline skates, only roller skates. The male employee was chill and respectful at least. :) UPDATE: Dave, the owner of LA Skate Co., recommended Valley Skate & Shop which was my stop after Roller Skates of America. ------------------------------------------------------------------- I came before they opened, probably around 10:30 AM; they officially open at 11 AM. I stood by the door and saw a male employee sweeping the door; thought they were open, so I said hi but he told me they were not open yet. That was fair; checked my watch and it was just 10:57 AM. I walked away and casually scanned the neighboring stores to pass the time, all the while holding my rollerblade. Lucky day by the way! A Google Street View car passed by; looking forward to seeing a blurred-out me in two to three years to commemorate the moment! I waited some more and finally came after I saw the door open officially. I asked the male employee from before. He said they didn't have parts for an inline skate/rollerblade; they only have parts for a roller skates. He was apologetic about it and thanked him for the answer. All in all, I am giving this place a neutral A-OK rating. Next stop: Roller Skates of America. read more

If you need shoes or a deck this is the place. Come here to buy either cheap used decks/ gear, or new decks and shoes. Tried to sell me a helmet for 5 dollars that had the padding attached with zip ties. Not a bad shop, just might be better off calling before. Edit: brand new helmets from brands like triple 8 and pro tec cost $20-30. Not to mention you marked up your orangatang wheels by %10. All in all the response from the owner solidified my opinion that you should go to any other shop.
