This was an unplanned dinner - we found this restaurant just walking around Gothic Quarter and it looked very inviting. We sat across from the bar. We were very well attended to and the food & wine were very good! The patatas bravas and the Catalan style cod fish (which was probably broiled) were both flavorful with a smokiness probably from paprika. They were both delicious! The crema catalana hit the mark! Majorly recommend if you're in the area walking around! Came without a reservation and got seated immediately. It's in an alleyway so you have to dig for them a bit, but they're easy to find because of their sign. The interior is so cool; it's like a fancy gastropub/speakeasy vibe that feels like you're in some secret place. We ordered the dishes below and everything was so tasty and fun to eat. An appealing and intimate space but mediocre food, worse-than-mediocre service. Ordered 4 tapas items and tomato bread. The latter was the best part of my meal, it honestly was great. Spanish omelette with veg was not served warm, and the texture was offputting. I've had better meatballs (these were veal) in a cafeteria. (BTW the pushy, boorish waiter we had recommended the veal meatballs as one of 2 best items on the menu.) Stuffed mussels were more bread crumb than anything, and the ham croquettes were the bright spot and were reasonable. Stayed for desert, the espresso never came, chestnut cake was dry, crumbly and flavorless. A grocery store desert is more satisfying. My companion enjoyed the chocolate mousse, said it was the best part of the meal. Awful service. Inattentive, our waiter and the loudmouth diner sitting next to us spent more time trying to impress each other with their wine list knowledge than anyone should have ever need to witness. 90 minutes of my life that I'll never get back. Do not recommend- It was great as a last minute option, with no reservation but when we ordered our food and the waiter realized we weren't ordering as much as he liked, he basically dismissed us. We ordered a bottle and he quickly served it to us without a word and stalked off. When we finished our food, we were up to ordering more but when I told the waiter, he basically said in a quick, rude and asshole way that we needed to order a minimum amount or his boss would be upset and was just so passive aggressive that he ruined our last night in Barcelona. I was really looking forward to this place after reading the reviews and was having a lovely experience until I got the bill. After waiting a little while to be served [they were pretty busy in fairness] I finally got to order and I ordered the morcilla [which was really good, blood sausage with rice] and the cheese croquettes which were OK, not the best that I have had. He did warn me that it was blue cheese which I was fine with as I do love blue cheese but they were lacking in something. The guy serving me asked me if I would like some tomato bread with my meal and I said sure why not! I had a glass of cava, a beer and a vermouth to wash all this down. The tomato bread was very average quality bread for what I am accustomed to getting in this city and was dripping in oil. Pretty tasteless but I was hungry and ate half of the portion. I asked for the bill and realised the tomato bread was costing €3.80!! Completely over priced and quite obviously a ploy to make some extra cash on the tourists walking in here and asking them if they would like some tomato bread without informing them of the price! It was not on the menu! There was a North American couple beside me who were asked the same question and went with it and a South Korean couple beside me who were also asked. I questioned the guy serving me about it and told him it was very expensive. He said he did not make up the prices. I told him I understood that and told him it was a very sneaky thing to do to try to make extra money off unexpecting customers. He very quickly avoided the conversation and ran off after I had paid. He was obviously aware that both couples on either side of me were listening to what I was saying to him. This really spoiled the evening for me in this place. This place was so incredibly delicious!! We got a few different tapas and they were amazing. We got a bottle of wine which was only €10 and was a pretty good house wine. We got the cheese croquettes which were blue cheese and delicious. We also got the fried mussels which were also really amazing. The fried peppers were also tasty. They were only slightly spicy and so incredibly tasty. We also had dessert. We got a delicious fruit mousse and a vanilla custard that was kind of like a creme brûlée but a little thinner consistency. I would highly recommend this place!!! read more

We had a gorgeous meal here last night with 2 glasses of wine each and 5 tapas to share that we couldn't finish, all for €45. Very reasonable. 4 of the 5 tapas were to die for with the 5th - roasted veggies - being pretty uninspired. I was also disappointed to be served a flat glass of cava but changed to rosé after which was lovely. Recommended by a friend this restaurant is tucked away in an alley in old Barcelona. Like most it opens late and stays open late. Dark wood, dusty bottles and dark interior makes you feel like it's a much older restaurant, and it may be. However the old dusty bottles are remnants of a recent fire, so I think the interior is on purpose. The feeling works. English menus and a great wine list. We had a bottle and 4 tapas. The Spanish omlet (pictured) was cold (on purpose) and incredible. Peppers and soft, it melted. We had the garbanzo and tuna, also cold. Not quite at that level but I will pair it at home now. The service was prompt and helpful, and in English. Multilingual waiters are plus for sure. Spicy sausage came in a hot dish. It was finely ground and you dipped or loaded bread. It was tasty and a large tapa. Would recommend and suggest as a first stop in Barcelona. Easy to navigate and not far from a subway stop. read more

We've been in Barcelona for 5 days and have had tapas for all 5, we used a combo of our friends from Spain, lonely planet, yelp and time out to get recommendations. The stand out favorite was easily this little place. We ordered the a glass each of wine, manchego cheese, chorizo cooked en cidre, stuffed mussels, roasted peppers and the obligatory pan con tomate. The mussels were EXCELLENT! I can't stress this enough. Here's the kicker everything else was also phenomenal, we loved every dish and were actually upset that we found this gem on our last day. We were stuffed but figured we had to order dessert. If the savory was this good the sweet had to be as well. IT WAS! I ordered the caramel tart with nuts and my gf ordered the chestnut pie, both were great. Overall 5 star meal. Just an Fyi Our 2nd fav of the trip was Tapas 24, with the standout dishes being the bikini, the spice rubbed chicken wings (from the chalk board) and easily the best Pan con tomate (pa amb tomaquet) of the entire trip I could eat an entire meal of just the bread and tomatoes. I was reading a web page on uniquely Catalan food to try, and it recommended this restaurant for esqueixada. Esqueixada is like a ceviche made of salted cod. Comparing an esqueixada I had at another place next day, this place's was excellent by far. As the web site recommended, I paired it with cava. I also had pork Iberian hams, and they were also good. Service was friendly and helpful. If I noticed correctly, I think there was only one wait person working that night. Probably they will ramp up more staffing as pandemic wanes. Since it's a wine bar and restaurant, the lone wait staff or owner was very relaxed and personable. read more

we found this restaurant through our lonely planet guide book of spain and it just happened to be near where we were sightseeing for the day. it was a little tricky getting here since it was located in a narrow alley, just off placa sant jaume. to drink, i ordered a bottle of still water (€2,40) and hubby ordered a glass of white wine (€2). these drinks were a bit on the pricey side, certainly more expensive than other restaurants we'd been to. after perusing the menu a bit, we placed our orders, and within minutes, were given a basket of catalan style bread. this was our first time having this type of bread and we were delighted when the waiter told us that it consisted of white bread with crushed tomatoes and salt. i'd never had this combo before and it was quite tasty, and the salt was much appreciated esp since it was so hot outside. the crushed tomatoes tasted like a very fresh tomato paste, which was great. for our mains, we had an assortment of tapas: +marinated leeks (€6,60) - these were marinated with a salty brown sauce and resembled picked veggies. they were served cold which was refreshing on this very warm day. +assorted vegetables (€6,60) - a colourful plate of grilled red and green peppers and onions. the veggies were fresh and seasoned very well. +cheese plate (€6,50)- a plate filled with lots of creamy slices of cheese. i don't know what it is, but the cheese in spain is just so savory delicious! although i probably shouldn't have, i ended up finishing every last piece! +iberian ham (€17,00) - this was all hubby and i guess he liked it or was really hungry b/c he finished every piece of ham til the plate was clean as a whistle! we didn't have any room for dessert, probably b/c i ate too much cheese, but that's ok b/c our bellies were very full and happy. to our dismay, we saw that we were actually charged €3,80 for the catalan style bread on our bill. apparently, in spain, some restaurants will charge you for bread, and some don't. if you're unsure, it's best to ask so that you're not caught off guard when you receive the bill! although prices were a bit high, the service was great and we appreciated the friendly waiters who spoke a decent amount of english. definitely a very good recommendation from lonely planet! read more

Not too inspiring. The service, while satisfactory, wasn't very welcoming - our server acted as though he had to endure American and French tourists. The bread he suggested (with the tomatoes) was lousy - the worst we've had in Barcelona - a stack of dry toast with a smear of tomato - and, of course, we were charged for it. This scam would be fine if the bread were good. The tapas - Spanish omelette, sweet potatoes, and a rather greasy, fatty sausage dish were all bland and rather tasteless. The Tempranillo was good, the prices were fine, the place is rather cozy (if a bit stark)tucked away on a little street near the cathedral. All in all, there are better options and not a place to which I'd return. read more

Our Airbnb hostess recommended this place to find authentic tapas at a reasonable price. When we arrived, there were two other American girls also going in who had been told to go there as well. I guess locals like it! The waiter was very friendly and spoke Spanish, Catalan, and English. We had the croquetas de jamón (6), tigres, which are spicy baked breaded mussels (6) and a half of the meat plate, which had a generous selection of cured meats and sausages. They were all yummy. We also got the traditional toasted bread with tomato sauce. This was too much food for the two of us, so we'll have leftovers for lunch. Overall the food was good, prices reasonable and the atmosphere was nice. Since it was our first night out in Barcelona, I don't have much to compare it to, but it was a satisfying dining experience. One of the best places to eat and drink in all of Barcelona. Order a maximum of two dishes per person unless you are seriously hungry. The octopus is properly cooked, the croquetas de jamon just melt in the mouth, the morcilla de arroz is perfect and the pimientos de Padron have been turned down to keep the locals happy, ie no shockers. The wine list is well balanced and not expensive compared to places closer to the Ramblas. Has been open for over 20 years under the same ownership and hopefully won't change. read more

Stumbled on this place late at night and it was a great find. We got the mussels, croquettes, peppers and chorizo, all of which were all delicious, albeit a bit rich. I came with my husband for dinner one night. We weren't super hungry so just went for wine and a cheese and meat plate. Honestly, I didn't know what most of the menu said so we kept asking the waiter for recommendations. He recommended great wine for us to start. I ordered chorizo with was fabulous (Note that I'm slightly obsessed with Spanish chorizo). I asked for the waiter to recommend a cheese and he gave us a mixed plate of cheeses to try. They served this with bread topped with tomato (typical pan con tomate taste). The restaurant has kind of a romantic feel - kind of darker mood lighting. Mostly couples throughout dinner time. It was busy but not overcrowded. It did seem to mostly be tourists and I was hoping for a more local crowd, however I did feel that it was a nice experience and the food seemed local. La Vinateria is great for cheeses and wines, perfect pa amb tomàquet , cold cuts and other accompaniments to wine. It's got one of the most thoughtful wine lists in the city, and the mark-ups are very reasonable. I've been going here regularly and frequently for 18 years and it's never let me down. It's a narrow, dark, wood-panelled place, which is never less than completely full every evening, lively, buzzing, authentic, run by Miquel, who is passionate about his establishment, and very Barcelona. You can sometimes get a table by just turning up, but it's recommendable to book. In the heart of the Jewish Quarter, in the the Gothic Quarter. Still relatively unknown by tourists, but well-loved by locals, and for very good reasons! This remains one of my favourite places in the world to have dinner in. It just makes me very happy. read more

Our last night in Barcelona, we didn't want to take a taxi and given it was raining, couldn't fathom walking far, and literally walked the equivalent of a quarter black in the maze like Gothik district from our hotel. Stumbled into this cozy, charming dimly lit little place with bricks as walls, and wrought iron hooks on the walls for coats. A tiny bar with gold appointments and old world gilded dark burnished wood tables. Warm, intimate, lit with flickering candles ... this is the epitome of romance. Loved they were playing '70's and '80's music, which we're of the generation to remember those good ole days :-) We sat there primed and ready to eat. We ordered several tapas: fresh anchovies in olive olive: Catalonian tomato bread; toast point with ratatouille & toasted sardine; tuna and garbanzo bean salad. All this sounds yummy, right? Yup, that's why we ordered them--sounded good and delish in theory. Problem: the flavors were flat and disappointing, lackluster, almost inedible. We noticed that everyone was ordering a bottle of wine, and maybe that's the key? To drink so much, that the food magically gets soaked in liquor? We don't drink and didn't have that home court advantage. We almost forced ourselves to eat it, because we were starving, it was late and not many places were open. We filled up on the bread and drank a ton of water. Though the waiter asked if we wanted dessert, I couldn't imagine this maneuver would be any more successful than the appetizers and entree. We skipped it. Overall, the food was beyond disappointing, a bit like the emperor has no clothes. Despite all this, I loved the hushed atmosphere and ambience, quiet and intimate, where conversation is possible without straining, no din, even in a packed restaurant. The service, also, was also excellent. Bottom line: if you want to sit in a gorgeous, romantic little place, something out of a storybook and have a drink, maybe share a bottle of wine, perhaps a bite of dessert, you'll likely leave happy and drunk on life :-) read more

Mediocre food, probably the worst service I've received at a restaurant. Anywhere. I read reviews beforehand, so I knew they would try to get me to order a bread which may seem gratis, but isn't. When I sat, the waiter said, in so many words, the local specialty is tomato bread. I said ok. He walked away. There wasn't even a question attached. I tried to get his attention for over five minutes to cancel the order of bread I didn't order, and this was also when I was able to put in a drink order. So I order a glass of wine and and a half order of the mussels. I'm not very hungry (and I have work to return to - I'm here on business). The food comes very quickly. But, I eat it in less than ten minutes and had to wait nearly. 40. To get my bill. No exaggeration. The waiter saw me gesturing at him and trying to get his attention. Once or twice he even saw me and seemed to smile. Maybe that is my imagination, but having waited over 30 minutes to just ask for a bill in a not so crowded restaurant, I left more than mildly irritated. read more
