I went to this salon for years. It is over-priced for the location. If you already have luxurious hair and don't mind spending $200 + (more than 5 years ago) or more per visit for cut and color; don't mind waiting a long time; and accept whatever the stylist recommends, results may be acceptable. The salon itself is in disrepair and dirty. I first went to the owner; then to his daughter; and then to another stylist , who's been there for years. I don't expect to be pampered; however, I did not feel that anyone cared about or appreciated me as a client. I always tipped upwards of 25 percent. read more

What a amazing hair salon. It's located in a nice area of San Pedro. Beautiful shops. So quaint. What makes it so special is my hairdresser Natalie. She is the best ever! My hair looks gorgeous when I come out of there. Every single time. She is very gentle on my sensitive scalp when she does my shampoo. The haircut is always nicely done. A message in my inbox from a worker of La Vogue inspired this update as she requested I remove my photos posted bc "the pics are no longer an accurate depiction of our look nor the products we carry". I am also updating this review bc the hairstylist that I used to see has since moved salons and I now visit her at her new location. Sorry but I will not be removing my photos as people can see when the photos are posted as dates are visible. If photos are posted at a later date then those are obviously the most current. Yelp has been around since what 2004/2005 and I don't think that businesses are asking people to remove their photos posted from early yelp days as many places since have probably done "upgrades" or no longer have certain items available. If anything, older and newer pictures are good for your business as it shows your growth and how you keep your place current. read more

If I could leave less than 1 star I would. I went in to have my long bob (see profile picture), which was starting to grow out and get flat, trimmed and shaped up for my 12th wedding anniversary. Manouk, the owner, was the only person who could fit me. I told him exactly what I wanted. I told him I have three kids and don't have the luxury of spending a ton of time on my hair. He told me, "I am giving you bangs." He didn't ask, he ordered. I am pretty laid back, so I replied, "Long side swept bangs. Sure." He started cutting like a maniac. Fast and furious, no rhyme or reason. He told me he was thinning and shaping. Well, after 20 minutes I have the worst haircut in the history of haircuts. Following are some of the comments I've recieved: mom mullet (according to my neighbor) You look like a lesbian, and not the feminine kind (my lesbian best friend) feathery mullet and laughing until tears (my sister) It looks like you got your haircut in 1982! (another friend) and about 100 omg's from people I know. Not one person I know can bring themselves to say it's not that bad. Three stylists I have consulted say there is nothing they can do. But it gets worse: I am holding back tears and Manouk says, "You look 100% better. You're just not used to it. Give it the weekend and you'll love it. You're husband will love it!" And he has me pay. I throw down the $50 and run to my car. I pull out and then re-park up the street and cry. I have never cried over a hair cut. I have never felt uglier. I go back in an hour later after I calm down. Manouk is gone and I am told by the one girl left their that all she can do is schedule a re-cut. She admits that the thick bangs(all the way around) are a mistake. I'm increasingly anxious all weekend, losing sleep, avoiding looking in the mirror. I leave Manouk a couple of voicemails stating that he can not touch my hair again and I want my $50 back. Come Tuesday, when they open back up, I drag my three kids down to get my money. This is when it gets really bad. Really insulting, really upsetting, just downright appalling behavior by the owner of this business. He told me that the long bob made I had before made me look like a "cave woman" ( once again, see profile picture) and I just don't understand what is stylish. He said he was doing me a favor by cutting it how he thought it would look best, despite it being completely different than what I asked for. He told me that I am obviously just not stylish and don't have the first clue as to what looks good. He took the $50 refund out. I put my hand out and he threw it on the counter, continuing to spew insults as I took the money and my three kids and walked out. Where do I even begin?! I was referred to Vivien by a coworker. She had been seeing her for years, and I've recently returned to the L.A. area and didn't have an established stylist here. I've been seeing the same stylist in Nevada for 10 years, and just really couldn't afford the trip up to see her. So, I thought, "What the hell, might as well give Vivien a shot". Going here was the worst mistake ever!! I walked in and thought, "Damn, this place is dated." Greek Parthenon columns, dated stylist stations, kinda drab and old paint, but there was a TON hair trophies all over the place. The staff was nice and inviting. So I talked myself out of my instincts, and said, "Just trust." I had an early appointment (9am or so), and I must have been the youngest woman in there by 40 years. As I'm waiting an elderly woman chit-chats with me about what I wanted. I told her I was nervous, and she told me Vivien's really great with the "young gals". So, once again, putting instinct aside I stayed and met my hair fate. At first greet, Vivien seemed like a nice woman. Professional and fashion forward. Her consult was straight forward. I told her I wanted to take off around 3 inches, and add some layers around my face, She seemed to understand exactly what I wanted. Once she started washing my hair I quickly started thinking something was off about her. She was talking about what nice virgin hair I had, (it was FULLY dyed and I had quite noticeable highlights); about her money issues, and all sorts of personal things. Things that were just too personal for just meeting someone. She started the cut with me standing out of the chair then had me sit, then stand again. She seemed to be cutting through my hair so fast, going from left to right, then right to left, and back and forth. She even took a phone call while cutting my hair! She was just all over the damn place. She kept telling me how damaged my hair was. It's SOOOO SUPER healthy, and she kept saying how heavy it is, and how she'll texturize it to make it lighter. I told her no. She used the damn texturizing scissors anyway. 3 times! Once she dried it and started the style that's when I finally saw just what she did. She cut both sides so noticeably uneven (off by an inch,) and when she tried to go back and even it out all she was doing was over correcting. She took over 6 inches off!!! She kept curling my hair with the flat iron after I told her multiple times to make it flat. At one point, she passed me the flat iron and told me to do it myself!! When she gave me the mirror to view the back it was completely jagged and off by another inch. She had to take off more once again just to "even" that out, and it STILL was off. At this point I had had enough. I have never had such a GOD AWEFUL experience like this in my life!! I had to tell her to stop, and leave it alone. She tried to keep cutting, and again I had to tell her stop. Three "Stops" later I walked out, and cried the whole way home, and most of the next day. This place and Vivien need to be on Tabitha's Salon Takeover!! She needs massive amounts of training, and should not be allowed to cut hair. People like her should have their license reviewed. All I have to say is BEWARE!!! read more

Natalie is a color goddess! My very light blonde highlights had gotten out of control and she was able to wrestle my hair back to a more natural look by camouflaging the roots and adding low-lights that are pretty close to my natural dark blonde. She also talked me into layers, something I typically stay clear of because of multi-textured hair. Bone straight at the crown and wavy underneath takes skill to cut properly and Natalie didn't disappoint. My hair actually has a bit of style now and it's still low maintenance. The shop is large, open and bright. Natalie was fun, courteous, and professional; I'm actually looking forward to my next appointment. read more

So I don't ever leave Yelp reviews but Natalie at La Vogue deserves the recognition. I've been going to her for close to 10 years now and I have never left her chair unhappy. Unfortunately, I have tried to color my own hair a few times which always lead to going to Natalie for a few color corrections. She always brought my hair back to life and beauty! Luckily, I've learned my lesson and leave it to the professional! My last appointment though, left me absolutely beaming! We had a little fun and decided to add a little purple to my blonde. Vivian is the only person that I trust with my hair. She always asks for my permission before cutting any length off, and layers my hair really well. She knows how curls work, and will give you suggestions for hair styles that would best suit your face. I drive over from riverside every few months just to get my hair done by her. The wash/cut is anywhere from $30-$50, just bring cash. The studio itself is pretty cool, they give you robes to wear so that you don't get any hair on your clothes. Parking is on the street, but the spaces don't involve parallel parking (which is always a plus), so you don't have to worry about getting boxed in or anything. read more

I naturally have a lot of thick, crazy, frizzy, curly hair so I wanted to try the Brazilian Keratin Straightening Treatment. And I know a lot of people who did it and some came out really well, while others have had to do it twice because it wasn't done properly the first time. So I wasn't about to go to some random place and spend a fortune for someone to mess up my hair. A family friend of mine recommended La Vogue Coiffure to me (she is a loyal customer and has been going for years). So trusting her, I decided to drive over to San Pedro and give it a try. And to put it simply...MY HAIR LOOKS SO GOOD! The frizz is gone, and my hair is smooth, silky and healthy. Manouk did an AMAZING job! In fact, he did such a great job that my two sisters decided to have the Brazilian Treatment done to their hair as well, and it looks fabulous on them. It's been about 5 months since I got the treatment, and I was so happy with the way Manouk did my hair that I drove all the way from Santa Monica to San Pedro again to reapply the treatment. And let me just say, it looks even better now than it did before, which I didn't even think was possible. I definitely plan on coming back to La Vogue Coiffure again and again, to straighten and cut my hair. It's a great place and Manouk is a genius, he knows hair! Natalie is great! Ive been coming to her for 5 years. The first time I came in she spent a lot of time (and color) on me. I had mistakenly bleached my hair and ruined it, but she helped me fix the hot mess. She went above and beyond making sure the color was just right. She was very patient and thorough. I have been seeing Manouk off and on for nearly 30 years. I moved to Northern Ca. about 12 years ago and still go to see Manouk for a haircut when I come to visit. He always gives me the best haircuts. I don't like to fuss with my hair. I wash and walk. I only air dry my hair because I can't stand to mess with a blow dryer especially in the morning when I'm getting ready for work and I always look great because of the quality of the cut. Monouk used to give me perms in the 80's and highlights in the 90's, both of which he is the best at. He is so fast at putting in the rollers or foils and it always comes out looking great. I could not find anyone near my home now that comes close to his ability and I always was disappointed with anyone else so I gave up highlighting and go natural now. He does usually make suggestions but I sometimes say OK and if I don't like it I wait for it to grow out. If I say no he does what I request. If Cara A. below wanted her hair just trimmed she should have said so. As I said I have been seeing Manouk for a long time and I have never seen him be anything but nice to anybody. I think Cara A. is being overly dramatic. I would recommend Manouk to anyone, especially if you want a great highlight. read more

A friend of mine gets her hair done at this place shes been going to for hair and facials for years. Not only does her hair always look amazing but it feels and looks healthy too. With her high recommendation I came to La Vogue Coiffure. I was able to get an appointment right away, and was told to go see the owner, Manouk. He really listened to what I was looking for, and then he suggested highlights with different tones, and when he was finished, I was amazed at the results. My hair has never looked and felt so good. The salon is located in a quant section of San Pedro, if you don't know of the street, it is easily missed. The few patrons of the od and old stores seem to put up with the very few parking spots making the experience a question mark from the start. As for the shop; there's an air of 'lack of business' and the store looks somewhat trampy/ run down; once hip but in need of some serious remodeling and updating of both stylists and their environment. The stylist I have is Croatian and seems to be on the edge of either 'put your glasses on ' or try another trade moment. I mean it, there have been times when I swear she cut my hair using the Braile Method.. More feeling her way through the event than seeing what she was doing. The good part is.. she gives great hair wash.. I want to say 'head' but this would be inappropriate.. but.. she does good head.. for a wash.. before cut.. Then there's the amount.. for some reason.. I feel like I always need to pay her more.. as the stylist is bending my ear with her husband's being out of work... Like I need to hear this while I'm supposed to be relaxing. .Sheez. Then there's the getting out of San Pedro.. always a downhill drift into what seems like the harbor at the end of the street.. maybe this place needs to cut the patrons hair on the roof.. where the view is better than the old puss across the aisle from me.. nothing worse than looking at a candidate for the city morgue when getting your hair cut.. Natalie is AMAZING with cut & color, very detail orientated! She takes her time & makes sure every thing is done right. I went to Manuk to get my hair done for my daughter's wedding. My daugher uses Natalie and loves her. I am an older woman who NEVER has her hair done. I decided to stop coloring and cutting my hair two years ago when I retired. I use to have it colored to a reddish blonde and cut very short because it's fine and thin. My hair is white, but the platinum natural white, and honestly I love it natural. I let it grow because for the first time in 40 years I wanted to enjoy longer hair I could put in a ponytail. I told Manok I felt it was long enough now to put up and I didn't know what I wanted. He did the most awesome job, kinda a french twist in the back, and large soft swirls on top. I was actually nervous, it didn't look like me. I received more complements that I can count. I now saw the wedding pictures and my hair looked great. I was unsure, but he knew just what to do, and I cannot thank him enough. I had Natalie do my makeup, another thing I've never done. Again, she is so awesome, my daughter had her do her hair and makeup for the wedding, and it was so beautiful.
