Especially the galley and restrooms. +3) The narration from tour guide was informative and easy to hear over the loudspeaker. +4) I appreciate them taking precautions with COVID like requiring masks and having a separation window in the galley. +5) The galley snacks are reasonably priced. You can bring your own snacks if you like. We did. +6/-6) The crew does accept tips. For our experience I would absolutely have tipped. But because of -2) below I did not because that had my unused $40 ticket fee already that was not refundable. I felt that was my tip instead. See below. NEGATIVES -1) The access to the boat IS NOT handicap accessible. I did not see this warning on their webpage when we ordered a ticket for our 75 year old mother. If I missed the warning I apologize. -2) Tickets are non refundable once you order. This was noted on their website. We ended up loosing (1) $40 ticket cost because our mother was not able to go. It would have been nice to have been offered a voucher to come back at a later date considering, A) you had our money already, B) 1 return voucher would have obviously turned into other purchased tickets and not just the one person and they would have gained more fees. -3) Because tickets are non refundable I do not recommend buying them in advance. Although you save $5 by buying early you may end up loosing out if your whole party doesn't end up going like we did. Just get there at least 30-45 minutes early and get in line. We did the Harbor tour and really enjoyed it! A nice way to take in some fresh sea breeze. The staff was super nice and knowledgeable. My main complaint is that I wish they wouldn't blast music the entire time, esp as it sort of ruins the experience. I took a tour a year back and there was no music. I also wish there was a little less chatting through the intercom and more time for quiet to enjoy the scenery. Other than that we enjoyed it! read more

This yelp is for Triton! this past weekend me and my family wanted to have a good time fishing, so we chartered a boat called the triton, it was disappointing from beginning to end. First they didn't help anyone set up fishing lines, Fernando the cook was upset when anyone would order food which was very odd since he was the cook, deckhand crew was extremely rude and very unwelcoming they seemed like they were all in a very bad mood and they didn't want to be there. The thing that really upset me was I overheard a child who was autistic and had a bit of a speech problem had asked the cook for a burger and the cook mocked him horribly which was so uncalled for, NO ONE should have to ever encounter such behavior from these grown men it's absolutely disgusting that this is their "customer service" good luck to anyone who decides to charter with this horrible fishing team. The only reason I'm giving this review one star is because it wouldn't allow me to yelp or else I would have given them negative 0 stars. read more

Very disappointed. Decided to go out among Covid. The company announced masks were required but very few people were wearing masks. Over 50% of the people were not. I spoke to the captain before departing. He informed me that the crew ensures everyone wears a mask. There is no social distancing on the boat unless you want to sit inside the cabin but when people aren't wearing masks that's not really an option either. While waiting in line there was also no social distancing. Places to stand are not 6ft apart. We measured it. Very disappointed. Will be reporting this business to the county health authorities for failure to follow local guidelines. read more

The joy , the surprise , the excitement on the sport king going to Catalina island that day on water looking around for land , I was never told I would not be able to see land, probably because I was tall everyone thought I new what was to happen . Standing on a rocking back and forth boat was new to me never I had to hang on to something before while moving . I didn't know that it would have this big of an effect on me so many years later , it was like yesterday . That time fish was important fish was everything to everyone to catch no one opened our eyes to teach me that fishing for fish is small game . The vendor has location at Ling Beach and San Pedro. This review is only for San Pedro site, we boarded the Karin Lynn. Punctual they are not, clean ships neither, we were told courtesy drinks and snacks, not so. I was under the impression same rules apply in terms of blocking walkways and doorways, well not so, this family blocked our view and their response was "did you pay for 360 degree view. I went to the snack booth to ask if they make rounds to ask people to sit down so they aren't blocking the view of those around And blocking door ways and walkways. They simple said yes we do and will send someone, did they No! I understand moving around to see the show we paid for but that hasn't even started. Note to owner get your team on the same page on what's expected of them while working. Well I revised my review to a 4 star firework show was well worth it, still Upset other patrons don't understand simple etiquette which the owner is not responsible for, what they are is the service they didn't provide. This company provides a 45 minute tour of the Los Angeles Ship Channel (Harbour Cruise) between San Pedro and Terminal island for an adult price of $10 (their website says it should be $12 but they only charged me $10). I had just finished climbing all over USS Iowa which is only about 300-400 yards away, and then drove over to take this tour. Parking is free in the Ports of Call village parking lot. They have their own storefront where you can buy a ticket and then the boat leaves out back. My tour was for 5:00 p.m. on a late November weekday just as dusk was arriving. The boat is of a catamaran design that is about 80' long. It has generous outside 1st and 2nd floor seating where the bridge is located. It also has an indoor area with windows if the weather is bad that also includes a bar where you can purchase both alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages along with light snacks like chips, etc. The tour goes out to the mouth of the harbour and then back to the bridge before returning back to the starting point. Most of what you see is the inner workings of the port with the large cargo ships docked and passing by along with all of the cranes, wharves, etc. while the Captain is narrating interesting facts about the port and how vital it is to the economy. You also get to pass by BB 61 (the Iowa) and see it from a sea side perspective rather than the one you see from the dock when you visit her. I really enjoyed the tour. First of all, it provided good value. Second, the tour was interesting. Third at twilight, all of the lights really added to the scenic aspect of the tour. I recommend doing the tour at that time if you can. When you finish, there are many eat places back at the Village to choose from right on the water. And remember the parking is free so you are in no hurry! read more

We decided to try a 45 minute harbor cruise as a treat for Father's Day. We read through all of safety measures they had in place, figured we would be outside on the boat, everyone would be masked and that it could be a safe outing. The harbor cruise was lovely which makes me really sad to say that the Covid safety measures were a joke. First we were funneled into the packed ticketing office. No social distancing, no-one controlling traffic flow, only a few people in masks. Then we had to stand in a crowded together line to wait to board. There was no way to distance or be safe. Again, hardly any one in masks and no one enforcing it. We should have left at that point. Finally we were able to board. I'm sure the boat was less crowded than normal which was good, but even though they had tables/seats marked as not available because of distancing, no one enforced it. We asked folks to move a couple times before we gave up. It was a terrible position to put us in. Again, no one in masks...no one enforcing it...and here we are forced to be right next to folks if we wanted to sit. It didn't have to be that way. I'm really sympathetic to businesses right now and how scary and hard the pandemic must be for them. On the flip side though, if you don't want to do what is needed to keep your customers safe, don't open. In short, If you are at all concerned about your health and safety during the Covid crises, don't use this company right now. They either can't or won't follow even the most basic health guidelines. read more

1) I wouldn't recommend this "sportsking fishing boat" . they don't know how to talk to people at all. To start my friend ordered food from "Barney" and my friend Andrew politely asked around how long does it take for the food to be done. "Barney responded, this isn't McDonald's acting smart. Andrew then walked away and waited to be called, barney called out for Andy, and Andrew said hey it's Andrew and barney responded "same shit". Clearly Andy and Andrew are different. 2) we departed at 6 am and was supposed to return at 4 pm. We probably only fished for 2 hours, and the rest of the time we were riding around. Finally got off the boat around 7:30. My friends and I paid for a fishing trip, not a boat ride. Such a waste of time. 3) my brother had a fish hooked, and the captain yelled, get that rod for him before he loses it! (It being the fish hooked, they seemed desperate to get a fish for their report) Barney grabs the rod, and then proceeded to lose the fish, they fish was moving side to side and they kept insisting for me to cut mine line when it wasn't even tangled. 4) after Barney lost the fish, he then asked my brother what lure he was using, my brother trying respond, Barney kept cutting him off asking him to hurry up like " a what ? A what ? What is it?" Without even letting my brother get the words out. 5) and he's a nice picture of everybody talking closely without masks, clearly not practicing social distancing. In other words, if you want a long sunny boat ride this is for you. But don't expect to catch fish! The only thing you'll catch here Is COVID 19. You are not guaranteed to see any whales, but the Groupon deal is just too good to pass up either way! (2 adult tickets for $25) We did the 10:00 AM tour and had to be on board by 9:30. There was PLENTY of parking in the morning, but I can't say the same for the afternoon trips. Since it's located on the San Pedro Pier/Fish Market it gets packed by noon. This was my first time going on a boat on the high seas, so I remembered to pack the Dramamine! With that said, I still got a little nauseous because the boat decided to go 007 and dash through the waters to find the elusive Orcas that had been spotted. Unfortunately, we didn't see the Orcas, but we did see some rare Rizzo Dolphins, Common dolphins and saw a Gray Whale breech! The tour guide/Marine Biologist was on loan from The Aquarium of the Pacific and he was VERY knowledgeable and had a great personality! He knew a lot about what to look for, and the types of sea life. Even if you don't see anything, the boat ride is very relaxing (for the most part!) Originally purchased whale watching tickets weeks ago but due to wildfires and poor air quality, I had to cancel. Asked for refund but told no refunds but they'll accept the tickets for a later date. Few days ago, showed up with my family and was told I had to make arrangements in advance and ship was all full. I was upset since I had called in advance and was told to go ahead and show up. Long story short they couldn't allow us to board. On the bright side, Manager on duty was Maria and she understood our frustrations and offered to exchange tickets for the following day. She offered a really great solution for my family and was very nice! The following day, the wife, kids and I all had a great day thanks to Maria and her awesome customer service. Maria is a great asset to LA Harbor Waterfront Cruises, hire more of her! COVID-19 precautious were okay, everyone had a mask on but as more time passed, less and less had on a mask. With that said, they have a reduced capacity due to COVID which means there's plenty of space to maintain social distance. The top deck is pretty crowded but the bottom deck had plenty of space, in fact we were the only ones. No whales but we did see 3 huge pods of dolphins feeding which was really cool. Color me anything but impressed. I had an average experience with this company. Not bad but not great. The parking was herendous. We went for the 330pm tour on Sunday and it was mayhem. The line to enter the parking lot was the length of four or five signal lights. We ended up driving up a street and parking so we could just walk there. But the car we were driving with waited in the line and they got there quite a bit after us (it was a ten minute walk). Although, this company doesn't have anything to do with the parking...my stars will not incorporate awful parking. We entered their shop and it was boiling. It was so hot that I wanted to tear off my clothes. Another thing that was bothersome was the amount of flies that kept buzzing around. GROSS! We had a 10+ party and we all got on just in time which is great. We board the boat and find a spot for all of us to be together. So there's ample room on the boat, maybe not during the rush hours though. the indoor spot on this boat is also verrrry hot. Its better to just freeze outside then die of heat on the inside. The ride was ROUGH. Water splashing everywhere and half the boat was soaked with water. So if you don't want to be wet then stay inside or closer to the middle of the boat during the rough parts of the ride. It was a lot of rocking. I was fine but there was a person in our group that started feeling sick. We went whale watching so that we could see.....WHALES! I mean thats the title of the tour! But womp womp womp....no whales , just ten minutes of dolphin watching and 2 hours of driving around aimlessly with nothing to see. Meh, this could have been better but it wasn't. So it was half and half. 3 stars for seeing dolphins but I really feel like it should be 2 stars (i might change the rating to two stars if I ponder it some more) I personally wouldn't book with them again. read more

It's been a while since I'd been out on a boat and the Sport King was a great time! We took the 3/4 day, left at 6am, got back in about 6pm. The crew is great! Captain took us to some hot spots and we caught lots of fish. It was a Wednesday and there were about 18 of us on the boat. Not crowded at all. Shane and Anthony were super laid back and very helpful throughout. We were novices and they helped with unhooking fish, helped with bait, gear, you name it, they were on the ball. The burger was superb! Yes, they say everything tastes better on the boat, but it was on point, super good stuff! I like that you run a tab under your name and settle at the end of the day so it makes it easy. Captain took us out to Catalina, great views, even saw a bald eagle! I recommend these guys if you're going out. Great time, reasonable rates. And the fish were pretty darn tasty on the grill the next day! read more

There were big lulls in the narrative. I was interested in facts about the harbor, the history and future development plans. There was almost none. The Cruise should be used to promote the Harbor. Especially during this pandemic my family Loved being out in the Ocean Breeze watching the Dolphin looking Whales they were so playful & swam along with the boat throughout a good period of the boat ride. FYI there are snacks drinks & beer sold on the boats, the will hold your hats, & there are restrooms on the boat as well. Would definately come back & recommend to pay the Extra few dollars for Whale Watching over just the Boat Ride. There were EMPTY AREAS on the boat where we were able to be by ourselves that we just took off the masks for a moment but respected when others came around. It really is worth it & not as Crowded. Best place to go during this Pandemic & Social Distancing phase. Had an epic day 11/16/19 on the 2+ hour whale watching tour. I used Groupon, got 2 adult tickets for $27. You're guaranteed to see dolphins. We got super lucky and got to see 4 hump back whales!! I brought my own snacks and adult beverages. They also sale snacks, chips and beer on the boat. Bathrooms were clean, boat was well maintained. Staff was super friendly. It's a great day activity. Even if you dont get to see many animals, it's a fun cruise out on the ocean. I highly recommend this tour. Sidenote: the dock where the boat docks is a fun atmosphere with restaurants, beer, music. If I could give this establishment 0 stars I would. They're the most DISORGANIZED group of people to run any business ever. Bought a ticket online, claimed at will call and was told to wait in line "outside." There were multiple lines outside because there are also restaurants that queue in the same area. The girls that work here are the most incompetent group of people I have ever met not to mention lazy and RUDE. But I have never gone on a whale watching tour and did not see anything. Was our first time whale watching today. We purchased the "2 hour " cruise but it was definitely less than that. We did not see any other marine life like dolphins , etc but luckily we did get to see some whales. I'm glad we did because my son got seasick and my daughter was starting to get fussy so I'm glad she got to see some whales for a few minutes to make it worth it. Wow what an amazing time! Got the amazing groupon deal for $15 for a 2 hour whale watching tour. We saw 4 humpback whales and probably over 50 dolphins!! Such a super cool experience. Plenty of free parking out front. Talia, the marine expert went out of her way to answer our questions about what we saw. Would def do this again. Perfect to do with friends or family or with friends coming from out of town. A couple people got sick but I thought the ride was pretty smooth overall. The captain made sure you point out all the main attractions and landmarks as we made our way around the harbor. Great captain who was friendly and informative, and we had a canopy on our boat which helped since it was a windy day. Purchased a Groupon for the 45-minute harbor tour. Although Groupon reminds you to make a reservation, LA Waterfront does not take reservations for the harbor tour (they take reservations only for the whale watching tour). On busier weekends, definitely come earlier to secure the tour time that you want. We arrived around 5:45pm on Independence Day weekend, and while the next tour was at 6:15pm, we weren't able to get that one and had to wait for the next one at 6:45pm. On the tour, the guide tells you about the sights on the right side, so be sure to sit on the right side. We got some seats on the left side, but a few times we did have a good vantage point. No wildlife seen, but it was nice to be out on the water and learn a few things about the harbor. Outside alcoholic drinks are not allowed on board the boat, but someone managed to sneak one and leave an empty cup beneath the bench we sat on. The harbor tour was worth the Groupon deal but I don't think I'd pay full price for the harbor tour. read more

I was on the Harbor King this Sunday, 11/06/2022, when the captain passed out and crashed the boat against the newly built docks near the maritime museum. Although everyone was scared and panicking, the crew members did a great job in trying to keep us calm and maintain order. I will give them 5 stars. They did what they could under the unfortunate circumstances. We saw them running to the captain's wheelhouse prior to crashing but did not make it on time to avoid the collision with the dock. But their quick thinking along with the help of another off duty employee and who we believe was her father, they were able to assist the captain and maintain the boat from going any further. Dealing with scared, rude and obnoxious customers isn't easy but they maintained their composure. We hope the captain is well and if this is due to a pre-existing condition, I hate to think that the company was aware of this and risked the lives of so many!! P.S. you seriously need to get new updated easy to use life jackets... read more

On Monday, 07/13/15, our fishing trip on the Sport King started out fine, as we headed out to Catalina. The Captain put us on yellowtail, at one point he became a madman, yelling at everybody to catch fish. 99.9% of the fish were too small to keep, he insisted he wanted a count of over 100 fish for the day, regardless of the cost. A lot of tempers flared up, due to tangled lines, and fighting, with the fishermen on the boat. The Captain needs to be in control of his emotions. read more

I had a below average trip service-wise. The most helpful guy was a crew member on his day off (who was on the boat fishing, I think his name was Alex - Kudos to him). The regular crew didn't do anything except drive you to the spot and drop anchor. I can handle myself, but there are much better boats where they bust their ass getting you on fish and helping out. It's the difference between going to a restaurant where they wait on you or if you gotta flag them down for every napkin, etc. For instance when you get a sculpin with spines, good crews are already there with dikes/clippers to cut the spines off. They're loading bait from the stern and bringing it to the bow to make sure everyone has bait. read more

The Matt Walsh 1/2 day boat and the Sportking 3/4 day boat run out to the fishing grounds daily from this historic landing. The Matt Walsh usually makes a quick run outside the breakwater to target bass, sculpin, and when in season, barracuda. Ideal setup is a 15lb bass rig fishing live bait or throwing plastics. Most of the bass are barely legal, so you won't get spooled on anything that decides to touch your hook. The Sportking can make the run to Catalina on a 3/4 day run. During the right season, usually summer, you can get into some nice yellowtail fishing. Most of the year, the catch is limited to bass, rockfish, barracuda, and the occasional halibut. For those sensitive to motion sickness, come prepared with the appropriate medications. The run to the island can get pretty snotty, and being sick for most of the day is the worst feeling ever. Believe me, I've been there many times, but my love of fishing makes me have a very short term memory. Make sure you try the boat burgers.
