Sunset paddle off the coast of Corona Del Mar.

What a blast! I've kayaked the Newport Harbor and Back Bay area a few times and seen a lot of SUP riders, some with great form making it look effortless, while others not so much, so I wanted to find a top-notch instructor to get me out of the gate. I found that in the SUP Spot, but what I hadn't counted on was having an all-around great time doing it. I met with instructor Jodie at the Ruby Lane Beach on Balboa Island, and we spent the first few minutes on shore going over the basic techniques for a beginner. We then set out in the calm protected waters of Newport Harbor for a trip that went in a loop past the entrance to the Back Bay with Jodie offering tips along the way to start refining my technique. After getting my sea legs under me, we found a quiet secluded cove to work on more advanced techniques and skills before calling it a day. For a beginner with no prior experience, I can't imagine a more positive introduction to SUP. I enjoyed it so much that I returned a few days later to try something more adventurous - setting out from the Newport Harbor Beach Patrol station and paddling out past the mouth of the harbor into the ocean waters outside the bay. I figured I'd get wet on this trip and wasn't disappointed. I knew upfront that this would be outside my comfort zone, but with Jodie taking it all in stride my apprehension level was kept in check and I had an exhilarating experience in a classic California setting that I wouldn't have had the nerve to tackle on my own. What really sets this experience apart is the professional and laid-back approach of Jodie. She's a former professional surfer and life-long paddleboarder, but that's not the most important thing for a beginner. What really makes the entire experience positive is the motivation and genuine concern she has for conveying her passion for SUP to her students. For her it's obviously not about giving a lesson but more about making sure that you are having fun doing it. At the end of the day you don't feel like you had a formal lesson but instead spent the time with a friend who gave you paddleboarding tips. I believe there are a few spots in the Long Beach,/Manhatten Beach/Newport Beach areas where instruction is offered, and Jodie mentioned that group instruction is also offered with a max 5:1, student:instructor ratio. If you are looking for a great water activity that just about anyone can do, SUP is for you. If you aren't in shape and worried about being able to do it, the intro lesson makes it accessible. If you are in shape and want to learn a new activity for an awesome aerobic/core workout it can be that for you as well. If you just want to experience the thrill of walking on water then SUP is the closest you'll come. If you want an instructor who combines a professional approach with a genuine concern for your enjoyment then you'll be grateful that you found the SUP Spot!

My first time! Great teacher! Thanks, Jodie.

My wife and Jodie seemed to have a good time watching me fall so I was glad to be a source of entertainment.

This is the most beautiful Pilates studio I have ever been to by far. I was expecting it to be…read morebeautiful but it's even far more beautiful in person. Check in was easy and the front desk staff quickly gave me a run down on where the bathrooms and cubicles were. Every person gets a cubicle with a door to place their belongings! There was a towel placed on every reformer and they wipe down the machine for you after class!!! I've never been to a studio that does that for you, which is such a nice touch. My instructor was Ashlee and wow she was amazing. Her instructions are very clear and detailed. She made sure to demonstrate the moves and I really appreciate what a great job she did describing when to breathe, what muscles you should be working on, etc. It wasn't an easy class but I really enjoyed the challenge. Would definitely come back again. Parking: garage below or street parking

I was pronouncing it: a-no-day-tome. Come to find out, it's "an ode to me" pushed together, lol…read more The attention to detail and copious amounts of love put into this studio are not lost on me. It's a creamy luxurious beauty. It's well equipped with top of the line equipment, the most majestic Pilates reformers you've ever seen. It's got a massage suite, sauna, and cabinetry for storage. It's brand new, well appointed, and sparkling clean. Check-in process is dedicated to a great concierge-like experience. And the wrap-up process is also easy peasy; they do all of the wiping down / cleaning of the machines. You just gather your belongings and go! Also, it seems like a ton of selfies are being taken at the close of class for the gram. Like honestly some of them are maybe more here for the selfie than the workout, tbh =) Personally I prefer a more calming, soothing Pilates experience. The energy here is a little more Zumba in that the instructors are mic'd up and super high energy. I like it for when I'm in the mood for it, but I definitely wouldn't choose it for an everyday experience for myself. If it wasn't so turnt up, I'd be here regularly. Check out Anodetome in Newport Beach if you are looking for a high end, high energy, intense workout. Also, they're on ClassPass.

I started coming here about a month ago, and I truly enjoyed the vibe…read more Pros: The light is low, so it helps us introverts. They have all the equipment you could need to work every part of the body. The trainers genuinely care and personalize the program to your needs. Plenty of parking. Lockers are available with a code. It's a get-in, workout, get-out gym. There are no people, just hugging machines or standing around. Everyone is usually doing something, and so it motivates me to keep working out. It's never so busy that it gets uncomfortable. I have seen people of all ages, body types, and abilities here. It is a good mix of healthy people. Cons: No showers yet (they are expanding to include showers and a sauna soon) Only two restrooms. (I have never had to wait to use one, but you never know). Overall, this gym is pretty well organized. They offer plenty of trainers of all genders. I believe they also do rehab and physical therapy. There also is someone that comes to do massages. Everyone I have seen here is pretty friendly and polite. I have been training with Laura, and in the past three weeks, she took me from 0 pull-ups to 20 chin-ups, 1:20 plank to 3:30, and 15 push-ups to 42 in 2mins, and my strength overall has increased. I totally recommend you check it out.

It's SUPER aesthetically pleasing, with all black EVERYTHING & custom made machines! All of the trainers wipe down their machines after they use them (AMAZING!) . That is hard to come by, at gyms! The trainers are also so sweet & make you feel so welcomed! There's a water fountain & a vending machine with energy drinks, protein drinks & protein snacks, just Incase you forget yours. Love this because I'm always rushing out of the door! It also never gets super busy, like a commercial gym. So if you have gym anxiety, this is a great place to train! Love this gym if I could give it 100 stars, I would !

The two of us came here for our first class and it was a zoo. We checked in at the front desk and…read morewere told we were on standby, which was confusing since we were not on the waitlist or anything, and booked the class over 24 hours in advance. I told the employee that it was our first class and she said she knew, yet she did not give us any info about the class or equipment like she did for the people we were behind in line. We showed up 10 minutes early just to wait to be let in until 5-10 minutes AFTER the class had already started! No one gave us a rundown of what to expect or how to work the equipment. Pretty unprofessional. It was very hard to jump in as everyone was already working out and we had to maneuver in the very dark, crowded room. The workout benches and treadmills are extremely close together and they overfill the class to the point where it's difficult just to put your weights away. It's clear that they pack the class in as full as they possibly can just to make more money off each class. I've tried numerous other work out classes in OC, and this was the most packed I had ever seen a class. There was a line just to get out the door! Very uncomfortable and way too crammed. During the class, our instructor, Mackenzie, congratulated all of the first-timers and named a list of people, but somehow our names were missing from the list... very bizarre! Also, how come all the other first-timers were able to go in before the workout began, and me and my friend had to wait until 5 or 10 minutes after it had already started?? On top of all of that, the music was WAY TOO LOUD. You could barely hear what the instructor was saying at times. My ears were ringing after class. Barry's gave me Cycle Bar vibes which I did not like. After this odd and unpleasant experience, we will not be returning.
