As you know, COVID19 is here and has shut down pretty much everything! Although businesses are now open under strict rules, campground washrooms are off limits - even though campsites are permitted to open for business. The "new normal" is very different from what we were used to before! This year, we lucked in and found a trailer at an affordable price, so we can bring our own washroom with us! This was the 3rd campsite we have tried, and the biggest one of all so far (as well as the most expensive), although it obviously has no beach or waterfront anywhere near it. However, what they miss in the way of waterfront, they make up for in other ways: a full golf course; mini-putt; a petting zoo (some animals were absent because of COVID) (and you're not allowed to pet or feed the animals right now because of COVID); 4 pools of varying sizes; a bouncy jumping thing (not a castle); volley ball courts and tennis courts; and about 650 campsites. The place is massive! They have many many very impressive seasonal rentals, which have beautiful gardens. Downside: there is very patchy / non-existent internet available out there, although you can pay a fee for access once you're inside the park and registered. In fact, internet was so bad as we were approaching the site that we got lost on the way there! Good thing someone was still there to answer our call for help and guidance! As it was, we just made it under the wire with five minutes to spare. Another downer was the price; this place is double in price than the other 2 we stayed in previously. Spots were spacious enough. It was very busy and crowded when we were there; obviously the locals love it here. It's very popular.

The hotel is actually owned by the university and boasts beautiful landscapes and centry old-buildings. The architecture of the hotel is beautiful - it looks like it was built in the late 1800s. The hotel is clean and quiet! The bedrooms are a bit outdated in style, and there aren't man frills to staying at this place. Rooms are decorated in the late 1970's decor - complete with floral wall paper and carpet, wood tables, and vintage nightstand lamps. But, that is what makes this place quaint and cute. You can sleep with your windows open and view the outside forrest and lake. If you are lucky, you'll see deer and other wildlife hanging around. Also unique about this manor is that they have bee-hives on location, which they sell fresh honey and hair products (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap) made of the bee's stuff. NICE! The best thing about this manor is that the staff are AMAZING! Starting at the front desk with Sarah - I think she is the front desk manager. Super friendly with a "Can Do" attitude. Her other staff members at the front desk - Catherine (and Gwen? Sorry, don't recall) - are also super happy. I especially like the fact that they were willing to help schedule rides and make dinner reservations for guests. [Side Joke: Sarah, build your staff the Yellow Brick Road!]. While there, dine at the Windermere Manor Cafe. Server / Manager Jason and his staff are SUPER friendly. The restaurant has some great food (I suggest the weekend buffet with prime rib, or the fish and chips off the regular menu). The servers are super nice and friendly. Julie-Ann worked with me to make sure the event was a success, and she was very patient and helpful with all my questions. The setting here is really wonderful for a smaller wedding with an intimate, elegant tone. There isn't a great need to spend a lot on decorations because the space is already so beautiful, but staff here can recommend excellent event decorators and florists if you want one. The only drawback was the A/C wasn't working properly and it got very hot in the grand hall. I could tell the staff were working really hard to deal with the problem, and they did everything they could to keep people comfortable. They were consistently professional and friendly, which is a lot more than I can say for many banquet halls. The food served here was really quite something - the chef provided a Vegan and Vegetarian friendly buffet with options for meat lovers, and I had dozens of compliments over how tasty everything was and how much people enjoyed themselves. I'm so grateful this wonderful place offers reasonable rates with such exceptional service and support. Definitely consider holding your event here! There is plenty of free parking and I can't wait to come back here and stay in the hotel again on my anniversary!

After a half hour wait and only moving ahead about 2 feet, I decided to go in to the "lodge" and ask if it would be possible to add a couple of more staff on the ticket booth. I guess with 250 people already on the hill they probably couldn't care less about anyone else being there. Finally after 50 minutes of frustration we got our tickets only to discover that a new rule was put in force and our two grandchildren under 12 had to have a helmet (nice money grab guys!). So after paying damn $85.00 we proceeded to the hill only to discover that there were 6 lineups with about 40 people in each one. So needless to say it was a long exacerbating situation for hundreds of people. Their system for moving the sliders (customers) away from the bottom of the hill was non-existent. So, it took 30 seconds to slide down the hill and approximately another 1 1/2 minute for all 3 lanes to clear before the next group could be released. So, we were at least 20 - 25 minutes just standing in line waiting for a 30 second ride. It was so ridiculous that we left after 4 rides. Therefore each ride was over $5.00 each. BTW: they now have your ticket limited to a 2 hour session. So if you wanted more than 4 rides you have to go through the entire process again buying more tickets.. The grandkids had fun but couldn't understand why they weren't allowed to keep going; that bummed them out. I was planning to sit inside and have a drink and a bite to eat but their (River Valley) greed just irritated me so, we just left. I think a lot of other customers felt the same way because out of the 300 - 350 people wandering around, there was only a handful people eating. When an establishment charges $3.00 for a ten cent bottle of water, I simply walk away. My daughter and I commented about how foolish they are; if they made their prices and systems middle class family friendly, then they would have people returning multiple times throughout the winter. But this way they gouge the livin' shit out of you once and you never return; at least we won't!!

You have to request Cleaning Service ahead of time, but that wasn't a problem with us since we just swapped out our towels.

What a great find…read more Texas Longhorn Ranch is just a few hours outside of Toronto and well worth the visit - whether you're looking for just a night away with someone, or looking for a larger group activity. The TLR used to be a summer camp and has been converted into a very unique Bed and Breakfast. You're greeted by the family that owns the place and their farmhands (everyone was so nice) and shown the grounds. Unlike most B&Bs, you actually have your own cabin (which is a converted covered wagon). Maybe not the best for noise cancellation, but luckily there's no one around for miles. The room was neat, modern, and comfortable. A heater is provided incase it gets cool at night, and if you're lucky enough to get some night time drizzle, you'll fall asleep to the sound of dancing raindrops above you. There is a fire pit with each wagon (which they start for you, city slicker), and each morning you wake to find a fresh pot of coffee outside ready to go. There's also a large field (wouldn't want to mow it) for playing catch or whatever it is people do in large fields. They have quite a nice size pool and lounge chairs which during those hot Ontario summers will come in handy. The meals that were provided were awesome; great value and delicious. Totally homestyle. We had roast beef, fresh and local vegetables, strawberry shortcake, grilled potatoes, salad (it was enough for 6 people...there were 2 of us). It was so good (and $30 per person was the best deal i've seen for a meal of this quality/quantity). The horseback riding was what initially drew me here - and as a novice was happy to find that although am I a not horse-whisperer, the very capable hands of our trail-leader basically was. We had a about a 2 hour enjoyable ride through the woods, visited some neighbouring horses (which started galloping over to meet us....amazing), saw lots of deer, and enjoyed nature. The next morning it was time to leave and I remembered I didn't have that much gas (it's sort of the middle of no-where and probably 20 minutes to the closes gaz bar)...the Texas Longhorn Ranch came out and gave me a good 10L for free. Because they're that nice. I can't wait to go back. Best B&B/ local vacation I've had....and it won't break the bank. 5 out of 5 neighs. NEIGHNEIGHNEIGHNEIGHNEIGH!
