What a fun place! My boyfriend and I were hosting a game night, and we wanted to liven up our selection - you can only play so much Settlers of Catan. Labyrinth is packed to the gills with games of all sorts - artsy wooden puzzles you could display, insane complicated board games, party games, games for kids. There was a weekend tournament of some sort wrapping up when we got there. so the small store was pretty crowded, but everyone was friendly and happy. Yay! DC has a great new indy game shop that actually carries loads of games instead of comics and those paintable miniature thingers. In fact, there are no comics or miniatures here. Newly opened and just steps from the Eastern Markert metro stop, you'll find classic wooden games, puzzles, kids games, and a very good selection of european and strategy games. Although the store is not huge for such a diverse selection of items, the owners clearly know what the good stuff is and carry it. They also host free game nights of various types, so you can ease your way into a great hobby or meet new fellow gaming buddies. If you are need of games on the hill, this should be your first spot to check. They have a great selection and mix of puzzles, board games, adult and children games and a staff that seems to care and is fairly knowable about all the games they have. Labyrinth is exactly what a little community game store should be; they've earned their place of the Mecca of D.C.'s game-nerd community. The staff from the owner on down are all very knowledgable about the games, welcoming, and care about making sure it's a comfortable place to play for everyone. I literally downloaded the yelp app so I could say something nice about this place, only to find that everyone else (understandably) already had. There's so much to compliment: 1.) The Space- Well-lit, clean, obviously taken care of, organized, great use of space. 2.) The Stock/Services- From Magic the Gathering, to wooden chess sets, to kid's puzzles, to weird nerdy board games, this place has everything. Clearly the management (or whoever orders stuff) is in touch with the community and customer base. Also, I love the employee-made MtG decks. Y'all keep that up. Cool concept. They also have release events with a great set-up. 3.) The Staff- This is the best part. Every single person in a Labyrinth shirt was helpful, knowledgeable, pleasant, and excited to be there. They had plenty of people working, and when my friends and I asked about a board game, the guy helping us said, "Wait a second- I haven't played that one, but _____ has. Let me go get him." When the other guy got there, he answered all our questions thoroughly and honestly, using the reason we initially picked up that game to point us at one he thought we might like better (and he was right- played it last night, had a blast). This place is seriously amazing and I WILL be coming back- frequently. read more

The staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the games, and Kathleen (owner) is often there to give advice and order what they don't have in stock. I have been browsing this shop since they opened and never bought anything. I had always stopped in during the week during my regular errands. Last weekend I finally stopped in to buy a puzzle and--wow--what a happy place to be on a weekend. The store was packed with teens opening cards in back, families buying board games, and college students looking at puzzles with me. Some young men were talking about games I did not understand. I am so happy that there's a store like Labyrinth in DC. Whether I happen to be in the neighborhood or make a trip to it specifically for that store, I love going into the store and spend a few minutes browsing. I usually end up buying something, whether it's a new game or an expansion of one I already have. I've bought numerous Christmas and birthday gifts there for nephews, nieces and my friends kids. I've been holding off on writing a review about Labyrinth for a long time, because what do you say about one of the best run businesses of its kind in the country? For those of us who are board game hobbyists, last week's glowing review of Labyrinth on the Dice Tower podcast is a testament to what's been created together by the staff and customers of this store. For those who aren't: know that too often, local game stores are (just barely) run by hardcore hobbyists, for hardcore hobbyists, and "why are you bothering me?" is the attitude you're likely to encounter from the staff and store owners. They can be smelly, dusty, disorganized places that feel too much like the dungeons described in the pages of their fantasy games. Labyrinth opened just a few months after I moved to D.C., and while I was excited, I was also skeptical that they would survive. But through true community involvement (which is rare for ANY retail space), incredible staff that pay attention to their customers, and a store that is laid out in a warm, welcoming way, they are now an institution on Capitol Hill. What's more, board gaming is now an institution on Capitol Hill. The draw to board gaming is ultimately the connections you form with the people around the table. Games I've purchased at Labyrinth have strengthened existing friendships around the table in my apartment and created new friendships around theirs. They have successfully created a sense of place within the community I've lived for nearly 4 years. I cannot recommend this store, its employees, and its customers enough!
