This is a great place for a multitude of sports. They have some basketball courts and volleyball courts in numerous weightlifting stations throughout. As a volleyball player, the open gym here is good but at times its not worth it, for a while the courts are usually dusty and the court grip is alright, any pair of shoes will withstand it. However, since its drop in play, sometimes there isn't much competition, on some occasions it would be packed to the brim with other volleyball players from surrounding schools like carson, jordan, san pedro, cabrillo, cams, etc. But on most occasions its usually empty with not many people. If you plan on going here with friends, have them tell other friends or set something up with people to go here and play volleyball.

I decided to register for this race for myself and two kids, as a way to bond and hopefully start a tradition of us finishing races together. We live in San Pedro, so thankfully there was no real commute. From our house, we got there in less than 10 minutes. The parking was great. We parked in the lot shared by The Grinder and a hotel. On our way to park, we noticed that many people parked either at meters on the street and in lots or parked in the same lot that we did. We arrived at 7ish and there was already a significant amount of people there. The atmosphere was great so early in the morning. People were excited, friendly, and chatting it up with those they knew and strangers, alike. The organizers got on the loud speakers and gave us all instructions, which I felt was helpful for all of us who had never done it before. The race promptly started at 8:05 and off we went. Of course there were full on olympic track stars there who took off and spanked us all. I did a combination of running and walking. I'm just now coming back after a long hiatus of physical therapy and reconditioning, so I didn't want to re-injure myself. In all honesty, there were way more walkers than runners. The majority of people seemed to be focusing on finishing, period, not necessarily winning. It was nice because there were people from all walks of life out there, all fitness levels, etc. There was even a woman out there with what I am guessing to be cerebral palsy, crutches and all, but she was doing it and we all cheered her on! The race was nice starting off. We began right in front of The Grinder at Harbor and 5th St. That initial climb up the start of the bridge had my cheeks quivering at the anticipation of the real hill that was coming. And I don't mean the cheeks on my face. Climbing that hill seemed eternally long... what helped to get over it was the slight cool breeze and the spectacular views. There was no water station or port-a-potties on the initial "going up" side. It would have been nice to at least have a water station, because I was dehydrated by the time I got to the water station on the other side. We even said that it would have been nice to have a second water station at the shaded underpass. Climbing back up on the otherside was a serious challenge. By then, it was getting really hot and that nice cool breeze that we cherished earlier was gone. I dont think I was ever as excited than to see that big blue arch coming up. We wanted to collapse in the grass along with others, but we were afraid that we may never get up again. At the finish line, they have timers set up to see how long it took you and we all received finishers medals. That was exciting and the kids were very happy to get a medal. We quickly went and grabbed water and they had oranges and cut up bananas for us. I was looking forward to the oranges, but they had just run out as we stepped up to the table. No problem. We noshed on the bananas and drank water. In all, if you asked me if I would do this again as I walked up that hill, I'd say HELL NO!!! After all, 5.3 miles is no joke, especially when it's hot, but now that I finished, yes I'd probably do it again. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I suggest preparing by going for long walks or runs if that's your thing, and include some hill training, so that you dont struggle too much on the inclines. :)

It's loud, smelly (I personally like the smell of Methane in the air) and great fun! Little kids love to watch the bikes go round, big kids dream about being out there and others of us (who maybe know better or have to be able to go to work on Monday) just enjoy a night in the crisp air, the bright lights shinning onto the brave riders below. One tip: Avoid Harley-Davidson night as the crowds are much larger, the lines to get in and to get food much longer and the grandstands are almost at capacity. For a better experience come on a Saturday night when their having Sidecars and get ready to see some action!!!

You've only an hour's time to hustle through as many checkpoints as possible before heading back to Road Runner Sports for the free raffle. Over $3000 worth of prizes await you, so scoring as many tickets as you can greatly increases your odds. I ended up winning the in store raffle prize which shocked my socks off because I was packing everything in and getting ready to throw the towel in at the time I heard my name being called! What a surprise it was to find out I won the mother load of prizes!!! Thank you Roadrunner Sports for the great Adventures you host and thank you Adidas for the free pair of shoes I won with all the other items in my prize!!! This is a super fun Halloween event for children and families! Every year, the City of Irvine runs…read morethis event at the Orange County Great Park. It is usually free or they charge some nominal fee for tickets. This year it was $5. Other years, they have charged for parking. The kids get a free pumpkin and they get to play a whole bunch of carnival style games where they can collect points to turn in for a big prize at the end. There is usually also a cakewalk and several other activities for the kids as well. There are also a growing number of vendors every year that participate and allow the kids to "trick-or-treat" through stalls set up so they also come away with a whole bunch of candy. Our girls love coming to this every year and seeing all the different costumes that the other kids are wearing as well as dressing up themselves. Sometimes whole families get into the act. This is a great weekend activity for families once a year and I would totally recommend it. Every year it sells out almost right away though, so make sure that you have the information for registration ahead of time. Five stars!

It use to be free and now they charge $5 which isn't bad but please work on your registration. The registration process is a 1-star. Every year, the system crashes because it's not ready for the volume. What do you expect when you say they go on sale at a certain time. Please fix that!! It's only $5 which is a great price but you also have to bring cans for the ticket to treat town & pumpkin patch. So what is the $5 going towards? Not sure but it's not a bad price for the kids to have fun. Easily paid. They have face painters, petting zoo, games, bouncing houses, train rides, and dog shows. Lots of variety which is fun. Treat town treats-also needs help! I realize there are tons of kids but 1 dumdum lollipop at 1 station is a bit sad. Or 1 tootsie roll? Wow. Luckily we don't go for the treats really. There are a few downs but overall, great fun for the whole family!! I love taking the kids here every year before they out grow it. :)

I mean, part of the fun in running at the beach is the social aspect: there are a lot of strollers, walkers, surfers, joggers, other runners, beachcombers, kids, and bicyclists. Everyone's outside enjoying the sunshine, making for a great day at the beach. Running the Tiki Beach 5k or 10k, the ocean breeze in your hair, is great fun and a perfect opportunity to get some exercise. There are grass skirts that you can add-on to your registration fee for $5 (or you can bring one of your own.) There are Tiki Beach shirts included in your registration, and a great-looking tiki medal is awarded to all finishers! Get off your couch! =]

Super organized & filled with lots of activity, vendors, energizing warm up, & an awesome banana pancake breakfast! Part of the reason I started running is because of the running community and organizations that put together these fun events that benefit such great causes. Free parking off of Warner & PCH if you arrive before 6:30 AM (beach parking) or right at 7am in the lot right behind Jack in the Box. Will definitely run another CWE race in the future!
