My family's six year saga w Caroline Family YMCA (in Ladysmith Village) has been a seesaw ride,…read morewith highs & lows. Front desk and management quickly learned to recognize me and my family on site and in general have been friendly and welcoming. This has been our go-to for free wifi which is nice. Sadly, the YMCA programs we have participated in always hold more promise than they deliver. My biggest complaint (and that of every one of my friends who have been members), is that the rules are completely inconsistent. Homeschool Fit is in theory a wonderful program to introduce homeschooled kids to sports and give them a chance to socialize with each other while parents workout or relax in the lobby. But staff and the policies changed on what felt like a weekly basis, so that if we were told one thing was expected, you can bet a totally different thing was expected the following week. For example, they kept changing the age that kids had be to walk themselves to the restroom. One week it's 11 years old to be dropped off and enter the the building alone - next week it's everyone under 16 hasta have a guardian sign them in and out of the gymnasium and escort them to the toilets. They had me running in to write the name of my son who was legally old enough to babysit other kids and biologically old enough to be a parent himself, coaches would not let him write his own name. Made no sense. I guess enough people complained because suddenly they change the age to 13. Child Watch was pretty good when my kids were little. If I ran into problems there it's been so long I don't remember the details. Pool rules always vary depending on the individual on deck. One day I came in with my 11 year old who had passed the swim test, and asked at the desk if I could see the rules in writing. In the books it clearly stated that she qualified to swim without a guardian. But everything changed when the lifeguard sent her back to me saying she could not swim unless I was in the water with her. The lifeguard became unhinged, saying she wasn't gonna "lose her job" over this, which translated to her going rouge and overruling written policy. It was nuts. Fortunately my teenager, who is a certified lifeguard, stepped in to supervise his sister, and the same lifeguard ended up flirting w him. Wth? The Caroline Y really mishandled automatic drafts during the chaotic 2020 shut down. It was a stressful, drawn-out ordeal getting refunded three month's dues that automatically came out while the building was physically closed. And then again for the power outage of 2022, it took them days to get the showers open to residents (like us) who were without water for 5 1/2 days. I do appreciate a Rachel's Closet set up in the women's locker room. This is a place where members can donate gently used clothes and take items in trade. But once again no consistency. A posted notice states that you must bring your donations to the front desk, which seems a reasonable quality control measure, but on several occasions I've brought donations and been told to just go hang them on the rack myself, unexamined. My review it's going long so I'll conclude by echoing the sentiment my friend voiced about all this, "leaving the Caroline Y feels like leaving a failing relationship" of course there were good things that kept us hanging on this long but overall it's been more headache than the membership is worth.

If I could give -10 stars, I would. This gym simply judged me 3 times for wearing clothes that they…read moresaid were not advisable, but I've seen other girls wearing them and no one ever complained about them. The problem has always been me. I wonder if it's because I'm not American? A Nike gym bra (normal) and shorts. But no, in this unit you are not welcome to wear whatever you feel most comfortable in because, according to them, people were complaining. I never liked wearing a shirt to the gym because I sweat a lot. I respected the 2 times they warned me, but the third time they complained about the shorts I was wearing. They never told me about this rule before I paid. I do not agree, I do not recommend it and I will never recommend it to anyone. I hope that in the future they will be more open to FREEDOM.
