We really enjoyed our stay, Cabin 2 was quite large and clean, the staff was friendly and helpful. It was great to have our porch shoveled after a snow, and when we couldn't initially get into our cabin, a ranger was there within 5 minutes. The State Park is beautiful in the winter, and we enjoyed our little family stay at the cabin. The cabin itself was very spacious inside, the beds were comfortable, the bathroom was very clean, and the kitchen was well stocked with dishes, pots/pans, silverware, cups etc. The view from the cabin was underwhelming, but it was nice to have rocking chairs on the porch outside for relaxing when it's warm enough.

Pros: This is a large and beautiful lake and recreation area, with nice hiking trails as well. Definitely recommend if you need a nice lakeside getaway within a few hours from the DMV area. When I went, the beach was closed due to Covid19 beach closing guidelines, however I walked along the lake and found a sandy/rocky area to sit that was almost like a private beach in itself. If you are familiar with the lake, the area I was in was "Pirates Cove" or the "Children's play area" Clean: This lake itself appears to be quite clear and clean-- I would feel comfortable wading in it or letting my children or pups walk in it. Boating: Lots of motorboats followed by tubes or water-skiers. Definitely a great late to take your boat onto. Relatively calm: The water was pretty flat and calm-- waves were created by the passing boats. Generally dog friendly: Dogs are allowed here, however they must be leashed. The park rangers are very strict about keeping your dog on leash...I was sitting in a remote area with my dog laying next to me, and I had dropped her leash, though she had a leash attached to her collar. A park ranger popped out of a bush, where he had been watching me with binoculars, and informed me that he would fine me if he saw my dog unleashed again. It was a honestly a bit dramatic, but I suppose it is ok....lesson learned here, don't unleash your dogs. The same park ranger kept checking back in on me every 15 minutes or so Picnic table: There are some picnic tables set up near the beach and parking lot area which are a nice place to sit and eat a meal A bit crowded: The lake was a bit crowded, which was somewhat to be expected, as I went on a nice summer weekend. It wasn't overwhelmingly crowded, and you could get your own space so long as you walked a bit. Cheap: It cost $10 to drive into the park and park our car for the day. Bathroom onsite: There is a small indoor bathroom onsite which I appreciated. It is right next to the parking lot. Good parking: There was plenty of room for parking even on a busier day. Nice hiking trails: The hiking trails are well marked and the trails seem well maintained and provide a nice workout and relaxing walking experience. Cons: Bottom is sharp: The bottom of this lake is very full of jagged rocks, I might recommend water shies if you want to wade. A little bit of trash along the shores: My pup's legs got caught in a fishing line a few times-- people seemed to be a bit careless about throwing them out. Not really polluted overall, just some careless things left around. Other: No alcohol in the state park area-- the park rangers approached me and my friend and asked us what we had in our cooler and if there was any alcohol in it...

Went here for a New Years Day hike and want to go back and rent a yurt. My only complaints are... No first day hike stickers, I hope we get them in the mail. And not enough hot chocolate, also we couldn't buy things and the office was closed where we could. All the staff there were SUPER NICE! Very pretty hike!

I stayed here last fall with my 3 boys and dog. We stayed in one of the camping cabins and had most of the area to ourselves. The showers were very private. Take a short walk through the woods to get down to the lake and to the fishing area. We had a wonderful time and plan to go back again.

I've been here in the past when my kids were younger. They enjoyed the beach area. You really couldn't swim in the beach area though. You basically get in the water and stand there. When you turn around, you're touching 3 people, at least. The saying "Packed like sardines" really fits here. (Pun intended). Lots of screaming and splashing but it's mainly a kid crowd so, know this. That was probably 7 years ago for my family and today(7/14/18) when I went to Lake Anna, I rounded the curve to check out the park and saw the insanely filled parking area for the beach I just turned around. So glad my kids have grown. But, I came here to go hiking! This is what I enjoy doing and this was a great place for doing it! There are about 8 trail names, each trail approx .5 to .8 miles long. Not much but when you walk them as one big loop, I ended up with 11 miles and 23,019 steps on my fitbit. It did take me a good 4 hours to hike it. I have learned to slow hike in order to save energy so while I could have jogged some of it it or power walked it, I instead chose to slow hike and I rather enjoyed it. Stopping at benches for water and my snacks. It was rather flat trails but there were some hills along the power lines. Some paths had nice woody view of the lake and boaters. I stopped at Picnic area B to check it out and it was o.k..... Sunny and shady areas. Flushing toilets and a playground for the kids. Let me say, people do irritate me like none other with the dog poo left all around the playground. There was so much of it and in this heat it was really smelly. So here's all these toddlers running around at a lake picnic area w/no shoes on and dog poo everywhere. - Also 12 pack of beer cardboard carriers cut open and left behind at the picnic tables. Talk about lazy people. There is a garbage bin not 40 yards away. The building with the restrooms was right next to the garbage bin so that whole place was smelly also.... If I had to picnic there, I'd pray the wind was strong and to the South. I ended up by chance, meeting this survivalist! I talked to this guy for a whole hour at one of the trailheads. He was a retired Navy Seal and as he's 60 some years old now, he Geocatches around the world. (This is what he's saying...I mean who knows really but..) He showed me some of the survival skills he learned and I swear I had so much fun just listening to him. His tips were worth millions. Amazing things you can do to stay alive for one more day if your lost or trapped somewhere. I'll never forget some of these tips and I was so glad to have met him. - In closing here's my all around points of Lake Anna State Park: If your kids are young, the beach may be enjoyed, If your hiking, you should enjoy this location and if you are a boater you're good to go though I'm not sure about the rules in the open water when boating and rafting so I'll say good to go rather lightly.... I don't know why it was $7 to get into the park though. and if you're swimming you have to pay extra...... At Sky Meadows it's only 5 on a weekend. High Bridge State Park is free even.... Anyway, just some notes for everyone but I did enjoy the trails! I'll come back, I'm sure.

This place has a lot of potential but sadly I've seen it get worse and worse every year. My experience is just with the "beach area" of the park as I've never wandered anywhere else. This state park is one of the go-to places for people that live in NOVA, so it does get pretty packed in the summer months. There is kind of two sides to where people can swim. There's the "beach area" that has sand and is closed off by rope. This area includes lifeguards and the restrooms are closer. There is a fee starting at 10am for anyone who wants to swim in the beach area. For adults it's $4 and for kids it's $3. Once you pay the fee you're given a wristband that you have to wear the entire time you're swimming. There's another section where you don't have to pay but you run the risk of hurting yourself with rocks that are inside the lake and there's no lifeguard. A lot of people choose to go to that section if they're wanting to grill near the water and be in the shade. You're also allowed to grill directly behind the beach area by the playground. Also, I forgot to mention that there is a $7 fee per car when you enter the state park. Now let's get to why Lake Anna is only getting 3 stars. For starters, the restrooms are absolutely disgusting! They really need to get someone to clean them every couple of hours with the amount of people who go there. They also made everyone get out of the water around 12pm to check wristbands. I've been here many times before and have never had that happen so this must be new. Not only is it inconvenient for EVERYONE to get out of the water but it's totally not fair for people who paid money to swim in this area. I understand that some people don't pay the fee but why punish those who do? We had to wait 10 minutes for the staff to scan the whole beach area to see if people were wearing wristbands. Crazy thing is, they didn't even do a good check! It was more of a scare tactic I guess but it was totally unfair. Now let's talk about these lifeguards. So it was about 4-5 of them today and all of them were huddled in one section for about an hour and a half just talking. They are obviously getting paid to watch the people who are swimming and make sure they are safe however, for this entire time period they were not doing that. What's the point of paying the fee to swim in this area if the lifeguards are busy chatting away? They eventually got it together but it shouldn't have taken that long. This lake truly has potential. It's a big area and I like the fact that it has a beach vibe even though it's just a lake. I also think it's pretty cool that they let you bring your own grills to enjoy your own food near the water. Overall, I just feel like some improvements can be made to make this a 5 star state park!

The lake busy with swimmers, stand up paddle boarders and boats!

One of our beautiful state parks. I visited this park after a long early drive from home. You never know what your going to see at any of our state parks but I'm slowly visiting them this year. You drive down this long road and are greeted with a beach (for swimming at the end of the road) Apparently you pay for this- we were not there for that. They offer gold panning as well as other events specific for this park. Check the events and plan ahead. There is a snack place just up from the lake. An old playground and train play area for small children. This area desperately needs some repairs. Tree roots are growing all around the playground under the swings and between equipment. A definite hazard for young kids playing and not watching where they are going. Equipment is falling apart. I would almost say it needs replacing versus repainting. Maybe a quick fix to the tree roots would be a few loads of mulch to build up the flooring area.

And since you're visiting the Pyramid, take your time going down Lee Drive. Many Confederate fighting positions are still visible, including an artillery site and trench works. I found this to be more interesting than the Pyramid itself. While you can see the Pyramid from the road you can't get close to it, since it's on the other side of an active Amtrak line. About the battle: While the Union's river crossing on Day 1 and heroic attack on the Sunken Road at Marye's Heights on Day 3 get plenty of attention, Day 2 is often overlooked. In fact Meade's attack against the southern Confederate flank on Day 2 almost broke through their lines, but failed mostly because of poor communication between Union commanders. The "pyramid" stands near the point of the Union's greatest penetration. The "Slaughter Pen" (which has its own Yelp entry) is on the opposite side of the wood line. Unfortunately the Confederate and Union positions are separated by the railroad, so you can't walk the entire length of the battlefield. Funny thing about the Pyramid - it was actually built by southerners. The idea for a monument was pitched by the Confederate Memorial Literary Society to Virginia railroad execs who sought to memorialize the battle in a location visible to train travelers. The pyramid shape is based on the monument to the Unknown Confederate dead in Richmond.

The park is pretty big. There are a ton of trails, picnic tables, playgrounds for the kiddos, & a stream that runs all the way through the park. It's a great spot to take family photos and to enjoy one with nature! We love taking our dogs & letting them play in the stream. We have only gone to the park during the fall/winter time, so I can only assume how busy it is in the summer. The trails are dog friendly & we always stumble upon a new trail when visiting (who wants to do the same trail over & over again? Not me!). If you bring the doggies, make sure to also pack a towel & some water. There is no dedicated water station for them. I can't recall if there are poop stations along the trails, so bring those too! I also recommend calling the park ahead of time to see if they are open. There are times after a heavy rainfall that the stream is too high to cross with a vehicle. In this case, you'll have to park on the outside of the park. Another big thing is you have to drive pass an apartment complex (kinda weird I know) in order to enter the park. Don't be alarmed though! You will definitely see the park entrance if you keep going. I give this park a 5 star because it never disappoints. There is always something to do & my fur babies love it. I will definitely be back & can't wait to check it out in the summer! If you are in the Fredericksburg area, go to Alum Spring Park & enjoy the beautiful nature views!

It was just after dark on May 2, 1863. Jackson had just launched a devastating attack against Union forces at Chancellorsville. Returning to his own lines with several staff officers, Jackson, ever the aggressive soldier, decided to conduct reconnaissance in the area. As he and his staff rode through the woods near Confederate lines, a North Carolina regiment, unable to see who was riding up on them, opened fire. Jackson was struck by three bullets, two of them shattering his left arm. The general was evacuated from the area and given medical treatment, but the arm couldn't be saved and was amputated. Pneumonia set in, and on May 10, 1863, the South lost its most effective tacticia. Thinking that the limb of so great a solider was too precious to simply throw on the regular body part trash pile, Jackson's unofficial company chaplain, Reverend Tucker Lacy wrapped the arm in a blanket and took it to his family cemetery. The reverend gave the limb a standard Christian burial and placed a marker above the site. Supposedly Stonewall Jackson's arm was dug up and reburied numerous times in the ensuing years and there is no concrete evidence that it still resides in its original burial space, but the simple gravestone remains.

"Jackson has lost his left arm, but I have lost my right"…read more -General Robert E. Lee Jackson's last words were apparently, "Let us cross over the river and rest in the shade of the trees." It seems like a lot of words for a dying man. If, however there is truth in this story, then the resting place of this limb seems fitting. The lone tombstone sits quietly among a small group of trees on the Virginia countryside. The picturesque views were once covered by war field hospitals and now is the resting place of the left arm of one of America's most famous Generals. A little history: Stonewall Jackson's arm was destined to be buried along with other amputated limbs until Jackson's Chaplain, Reverend Lacy, retrieved it from a macabre pile of appendages and eventually buried it on his own plantation, Ellwood Manor. The limb was buried several days before Jackson's death as a way for his staff to pay tribute to the man that they had followed through battle. It's probably the least they could do considering that his own men accidentally shot him. I'm just sayin'. The story of a buried arm is surreal, but a little research makes the story a little more humane. Even if Jackson fought on the wrong side of history, every body (or body part) should be so lucky to be buried in a place so serene. Verdict: Great for Civil War buffs, the curious and people spending a little time in nearby Old Town Fredricksberg. Or Cross it off your Weird Virginia (book) list. Weird tidbits: The arm has been dug up a few times in the past, but has always made it's way back into the ground. It seems that the curious return it to it's resting place after learning that there REALLY is an arm buried in the ground. FYI: The last time I attempted a visit, the grounds were closed contrary to the information found on the website. If in doubt, it's best to call.
