It's the home of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra - yes, Lafayette does indeed have a symphony orchestra. Lately they have been booking more musical acts. We went to see some tribute bands here and had a great time. They have also been booking some mid-level acts, including a couple of well-known Christian artists. The venue has a lot of that old vaudeville charm. The original architectural details have been preserved. There is a lobby where alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are served, and you can hang until the show starts. The ushers are all volunteers, believe it or not, and they are super friendly and helpful. The only thing I can think of to criticize is the loudness of the bands we saw. A bit loud for the room, we thought. But we still had a blast!

I just saw a delightful production of Cinderella, with a delicious TV Dinner-inspired buffet of turkey and dressing, meatloaf, pot roast, pork loin, green beans, corn, peas and carrots, and mashed potatoes. These were preceded by their delicious broccoli salad and tossed salad, and even better than before yeast rolls with apple butter. There were also an apple crumble and peach cobbler (with a wonderfully buttery dough), as well as additional desserts that can be purchased for intermission. The new owners, Mark and Misty McGrady, have made sure to keep the atmosphere built by the founders, Donna and Richard Myers. As a returned Hillsboro native, Mark understands what this institution of over 25 years means to the area. They changed the broccoli salad slightly, just making it crunchier, and added a French salad dressing that had been served when a hotel restaurant occupied the space where the dining room/auditorium now is, in addition to Donna's original sweet and sour dressing for the tossed salad. Both were wonderful, like all the food. And then there's the price. Although the price is the same as another dinner theater about 56 miles east of them, for a weeknight show and seats on the very edge of the auditorium, the other place is $27 more than Myers for weekend evenings, in the center section (and that's ignoring that place's $5 surcharge for a 2-top, or $35 surcharge for the last row, which they call "box seats for two"). I have been there once, but Myers Dinner Theater is the one I keep returning to. While you're there, visit one of their uniquely decorated restrooms (whether you need to or not). The concert included Glass, Timo Andres, Aaron Diehl, Lisa Kaplan, and Maki Namekawa in solo performances. First, a little up front info. An Etude is a composition designed to improve the technique of an instrumental performer by isolating specific difficulties. In general, a single etude will focus on only one technical problem. In today's usage, an etude probably falls somewhere between an exercise (a short excerpt that is unable to stand alone as a formal composition) and a concert etude (a piece of music that can stand alone as a self-sufficient composition). In short, the solo piano performances were breathtaking and the acoustics of the sold out 1,011 seat Loeb Theater were stunning! Should you have an opportunity to attend a musical performance in this venue, i guarantee you will not be disappointed.

The market runs from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. Today, the market had about 50 dealers selling everything from antiques to a lot of junk. We were there early and attendance was down probably due to predicted rain. The venders and people were nice and willing to negotiate. We bought a couple of things at really good prices, but we had to paw through a lot of junk. Unimaginative food venders are available, but we didn't purchase food, I did not see restrooms, but I would assume there are available somewhere on site. The venue is lovely and tree covered. The parking lot is paved and dry. It's an hour+ drive for us, so not sure we will be regulars.

For $15, you get a candlelit dinner (catered by Scanoli's Cajun and BBQ Restaurant, across the street) and a classic movie. These days, the movie alone would cost you $10! And that means that the $5-dinner, already very good on the palate, was also quite gentle on the wallet. They also show Monday night football on the big screen. Moreover, for most of these events, the bar is open, which means you can enjoy a drink while you watch the movie. Tell me, where else in the US can you do that! I'm sure such places exist, but they're few and far between. For what it's worth, you can also rent out the space for events such as receptions and weddings. I haven't yet been there for something like that. But if it's handled anywhere near as well as the movie night, I'm already a fan.
