My kiddo had been taking ukelele lessons prior to our Maui trip, and his grandmother sent him with a little money to buy a Hawaiian ukelele. When we got to Maui, we did a ukelele lesson at Whalers Village, and our instructor Uncle Ron recommended Lahaina music. Both Max and Jason helped us in the store and were great with our son. It was a special ukelele for us, as my son's grandmother passed away a few weeks after our return. He was only 7 but played his new ukelele at his grandmother's funeral. we had 2 ukulele free lesson at Royal Lahaina Resort by Jason. He was a grate teacher at the lesson & we learned chords: C, G6, D6, Am, F, G7 (a lot!), even thought many of us were playing the ukulele very first time. You can tell how Jason is a grate teacher from that. Then, we visited Lahaina Music twice - 1st to get his free Ukulele book & 2nd to replace a 4th string of my new Ukulele I bought from Mele Ukulele. The parson who took care of the Ukulele was very knowledgeable & fun to talk. She tuned my Ukulele week, too. Thank you for taking care of my Ukulele & the fee lessons at the hotel. She was very friendly and energetic, showed and played the different ukulele. She took the time to explain what the uke was made out of, the type of strings used and how long it would take to break in the string etc. I did end up purchasing the Kala ukulele and am happy to have made my purchase there. We got the most wonderful Aloha experience in this store. Great place for Ukelele's! I happened on the store and wanted to rent a Ukelele to play with my daughter. I ran into Max, a wonderful person and the performer who I saw on a trip to Maui two years ago who was the one who inspired me to play the uke. He was great, and took the time to explain the different woods, and types of instrument. I decided the perfect souvenir for my trip to Maui would be a good ukulele. I have a cheap one at home, but I knew a better one would make a big difference. I didn't want to buy one at a gift shop or tourist store, I wanted a real, good quality instrument. I heard about Lahaina Music from a lady at our resort, and we headed over before dinner (they close relatively early, so make this an afternoon stop). The girl at the shop was awesome- really nice and knowledgeable. No pressure, she was happy to tell me all about the different ukuleles, and how they are similar and different to each other, and make perfect recommendations. I tried several and I walked out with a uke I am so happy with! I'm so glad I stopped by to see her. Stopped in to buy my wife an ukulele for our anniversary, and had an amazing experience. Aida assisted us, and asked many thoughtful and directed questions. She then narrowed our search to about 6 instruments, and proceeded to play the same chord progression on each of them in turn, explaining the different tone woods and what we could be listening for with how the tone woods affected the sound. After we had it narrowed down to two, I suggested my wife take them and play around a bit, but she was hesitant because she is very new to ukulele. Aida then gave an impromptu ~30 minute lesson on playing ukulele, starting with proper holding of the instrument, strumming technique, and some simple chords and theory behind the chord progression being taught. Aida's knowledge about music, her knowledge about ukuleles, her passion for music and for teaching were all incredibly apparent, and gave us an incredible experience. For kicks, I spot checked a couple of the prices against some of the typical big online music shops, and found Lahaina Music's prices to be on-par or even lower than some of the 'big box' shops online--and it came with a free lesson and incredible hands-on service to boot. If you're on the island and looking for an instrument, I cannot recommend Lahaina Music enough. read more

Great experience, start to finish. When we arrived, a father was buying his son a ukulele for Christmas and Max was in the middle of giving a short lesson. My wife and I wanted to buy a couple ukuleles but didn't know much about them or where to begin. Max spent quite a bit of time with us, telling us the story of the ukulele, as well as giving us a quick lesson. The Lahaina Cannery Mall offers free ukelele lessons weekly. We met Jason from Lahaina Music as thr instructor of the free class. I posted a photo of his shedule as he offers free ukelele lessons on different days of the week at other locations and hotels in Lahaina. His class started promptly, and he brought a large number of ukelele's for the class to use. They were very clean, shiny, new, and had a variety of sizes and different types of uke's to accommodate people of different shapes and sizes. He even let our keiki's use the tiny uke's and was very patient even as the kids started getting tired and restless. The free lesson is about an hour long and he welcomed us even though we arrived a few minutes after class had already started. He taught us how to properly hold the uke, finger placement, strumming, a few chords, and sang while we played the chords which we were able to play about 10 songs as a group. It was a very fun and informative class! I would highly recommend it for anyone with zero musical experience. Jason is patient, likes to talk, and is knowledgeable. We would probably try his class again if we stayed in Maui longer. Our entire family agreed that it was very fun. Kids under 8 might get restless and bored though as one hour can feel like forever to them. We even visited his store Lahaina Music, which is a tiny little store and met his wife, and she helped answer some questions about uke's. They start at about $75 and there are uke's in the $1,000+ range. As beginners we were overwhelmed with the choices and didn't have enough info, plus we didn't want to spend so much money on something that was fun at the free lesson but we might not ever use again, so we ended up not buying one but I would still recommend Jason and the free uke lessons and possibly visiting his store if you wanted to buy one! read more

I wanted to check out Lahaina Music since it was recommended as a great place to buy Ukulele's and to get lessons. My plan was to go into the shop and just test drive them since I already have a nice concert ukulele at home. I pulled one off the wall and started playing and I was in love. It was a tenor, and besides sounding great, it felt so comfortable! Heidi explained that because I'm tall with long arms, a larger instrument would be a better fit. I decided I wanted to buy one because there was such a significant difference in how I was able to play. Heidi asked what my price point was and she pulled 4 or 5 for me to play. I ended up going for one in the middle of my price range but they all sounded great including the one I pulled off the wall which was about $150. If you want to try your hand at playing, find a Uke for a good price, or get some quick lessons from "behind the counter" I can't speak highly enough of the Lahaina Music team! read more

We saw the sign and showed up for a free Uke lesson at the Lahaina Mall on Tuesday at 5:30pm. Jason humped in like 12 Ukes and let everyone/anyone try it. We loved it! He started off with the basics; how to hold your Uke, your thumb position, strumming the sand off your strings, and then taught three magic cords. Jason had a great sense of humor and met his "three store plugs" requirement so his wife should be pleased! He provided a nice hand out and invitation to visit his shop. I see that many people are rating the free lessons given by the owner, Jason. I discovered Lahaina Music on YouTube and started following Jason's lessons there and bought a copy of his instruction manual (not the free songbook on the website, but that is useful too). I quickly learned more about the *proper* way to play the uke in just two nights than I had in 2 years working with instructors who treated the uke as if it is just a small guitar. I also realized that I was playing the wrong size instrument, a concert instead of a tenor. I emailed Jason for advice on buying a good uke without breaking the bank and he promptly and repeatedly gave me detailed answers to my questions, even sending me an impromptu video when I asked about the difference between C and low-G tuning. He had so much fun in that video that it his enthusiasm was contagious. I had planned to buy locally, and had told him so, but I realized 1. I couldn't find a decent uke in East Tennessee, 2. even if I could, I could never get the same level of support and 3. even with shipping, the prices for a better uke from Lahaina Music were comparable to lesser ukes available in this area. I bought the uke from them and absolutely love it -- it's everything Jason said it would be. If you like music and would like to play an instrument, the ukulele is a simple instrument to learn. This review is for the lesson offered by the owner Jason and not for the shop itself as I did not visit the shop. We stayed at the Royal Lahaina and saw a free ukulele lesson being offered so we decided to check it out. Unfortunately our daughter was very distracting and wouldn't sit still for a lesson so my husband had to take her away. I stayed for the lesson and was thoroughly impressed by Jason's passion for the music and his teaching style. I played Chinese zither (solo instrument) and Chinese bass guitar (called Ruan) in an orchestra when I was in my teens, so I have prior musical training. However, I have no western/non-Chinese music training and wasn't sure if I'd be able to pick up the ukulele with ease. Jason made it so easy by breaking down the basics with super clear and easy to follow instructions. He taught us how to hold the uke correctly, how to strum correctly, and taught us the three main cords that we can use for bunch of different songs and off we played! Granted, you'd need lots of practice to get things perfect, but I was impressed by how easy it was to pick up a uke and start learning simple songs. It was a lot of fun playing and singing along with Jason and the group. Because of this lesson, I've now started learning how to play the ukulele at home. I'm glad this is an instrument that I can take with me (unlike the giant zither that's hard to haul and needs fingernails/plucks to play) and play along with others (unlike the Ruan which is only useful in an orchestra). This truly is a social instrument like Jason explained and I'm having lots of fun with it. If you're in Maui and staying around Lahaina area, look up Jason, Lahaina Music, and his free classes. Spend an hour with him and you'll know the basics on how to play a uke. Jason is very knowledgable and he has a YouTube channel where he posts free lessons to follow along and practice. On my last visit to Hawaii, I had an impulse to buy a ukulele. No, not the crappy $5 ones that you can buy at the ABC stores every 40 yards from each other. I'm talking about the real deal. This is where I bought my ukulele. As someone once said to me, "ukes are like cute little guitars". I bought a "cute" black one that can be plugged into an amp. My ukulele is so cute that I started shitting kittens and rainbows after only playing with it a few days. Cute. If the beaches and hawaiian music are turning you into an impulsive shopper, come here to add to your multitude of souvenirs. The owner seemed knowledgeable, but I'm no Einstein when it comes to musical instruments so who knows. He threw in a chord chart and a discounted gig bag too so that was cool. Otherwise, don't give into the cuteness. Wait till you fly back to the mainland and order it online for a couple hundred dollars cheaper. The owner was giving free ukulele lessons at my hotel and despite the fact that I was absolutely terrible I had a lot of fun and wanted to get a ukulele myself. I had tried out the $20 tourist special at the ABC store and it was obviously worth only the $20 they were charging. I figured if the music store had higher quality ukes without an insane markup I'd pick one up. I ended up going with one up from the lowest price one they offered at the time and with my discount from the free lesson it was the same price I would pay on the mainland. I don't mind paying a little bit of a markup to support small businesses but I had to double check that they weren't tourist prices and as far as I can tell they aren't. Hawaiian airlines let me carry on my concert uke and it survived the trip back home, now I just have to figure out how to play it. :) read more

Max was so wonderful! On his day off when the store was closed, he saw that we came to the store and still welcomed us in. He gave us an intro lesson and history of the uke and spent so much time with us. We have our first uke and know how to hold it, strum it, and read music. Our ukelele is beautiful and a great price. My husband, who plays bass and guitar, had his heart set on getting a good ukelele while in Maui. We had not had a great experience with the vendor at the Maui Swap Meet and came across Lahaina Music quite by accident.
