I have a friend who told me to stop in to this place and check out the merchandise. I am forever grateful to her for letting me know what an awesome store this is! I don't wind surf or kite surf, but I love adorable Maui threads, cute slippahs and the great prices--and second wind has it all! They even had sale racks! Everyone loves an extra good deal. The store has been renovated within the last few years according to the staff. It's really clean, bright and well organized. Most of the clothing is on the main floor and the surf accessories are on the upper level. Boards in every length and color line the wall like candy. The staff is super helpful in answering customer questions. While I was shopping I overheard many tourists come in looking for information on the water, the equipment and general surf questions. The staff was knowledgeable and was able to point them in the right direction and get them out the door with what they needed. If you're looking for beach or surf gear, I would definitely recommend second wind. I'll be heading back over to stock up on more cute clothes. Go check them out! read more

After talking to someone very helpful (on the phone) named Kevin, My boyfriend went there straight to buy a $3K kite yesterday and the sales guy that was there at the time (12/31 - afternoon) was extremely condescending and treated him like an idiot and told him that he was probably not experienced enough to buy it. I rented windsurfing gear from them during my trip. The overall experience was amazing. Highlights: - One of the better priced places for daily rentals - Provided board w 2 sails and all the required parts (I brought my own harness, unsure if they provide) - Equipment is in great condition and had a variety of options for each level (I am an intermediate) - Staff super friendly and helpful - They organized a private lesson for me with HST - Straps and roof rack pads provided to transport the board - Located close to Kanaha, which is where there is a great community of windsurfers and awesome conditions - Able to store the equipment there at night and pickup every day, hours were good for that (cannot start at Kanaha until 11am anyways) - Was able to swap out equipment when needed, even switched board sizes mid day at one point Would highly recommend them and will definitely be back here. We rented windsurf gear for 2 days and 2 hours. They have good gear and have a nice crew. No one however is a windsurfer- so not super helpful in telling you about how the sails should be ideally rigged etc. Also we returned gear 2 hours late and they charged us a full day. Pretty lame not to give us any break in price. I have been renting in Maui for years and never really had anyone do that. We will check out another shop next time for sure. read more

First visit purchasing racks for sons truck.. Went back for installation but clamps couldn't fit a 2015 truck. Worker, I hope I got his name correct, Trevor, went out of his way to find the part from another shop to make sure I left a happy camper! He explained how the racks work and what would be the best fit for my son since he rides dirt bike too as the racks I purchased wouldn't fit a bike. Good place to rent gear other than JP Australia boards. Seems JP is like a GM or Ford high volume product that all the shops carry. Second Wind has a great selection of Mistral and RRD boards. They had a Naish board and I believe 1 or 2 other companies. Great to test out different boards of interest to see how they work out for you. The only down side of ALL the rental shops is that NONE are located on the beach. They are all 5-10 minutes away. While they will gladly exchange out any gear to try others, it eats away at your time. A word of caution, buy the insurance. You can't treat the rental board like you do a rental car. If you damage the board break out your credit card! I damaged the side rail a little...just a tiny crack. I still had to pay $50. If you damage the tip, expect to pay a lot more even with insurance. Staff is pretty good, overall very friendly. Knowledge of gear is so-so depending on who is helping you. Some are more into kite-surfing, so they know more on that gear better. Prices are reasonable and competitive. I also booked a 2 hour private lesson. They work with HST. My instructor was great at identifying my bads habits and improved my technique quickly. First day the wind was bad, so we re-scheduled to the next day without any hassle. read more

We purchased from them because the owners (Ralph and Sandy) hired such phenomenal customer focused, friendly, knowledgeable staff. I wanted to rent some windsurf gear for a 2-hour session on Kanaha - light wind, not a great day to sail but still expected to be enjoyable. Rented some Fanatic gear (standard condition) and Ezzy (in great condition). I had rented elsewhere on the island and had found similar quality, so nothing outstanding here. The problem came when the young man of the staff checked the gear after use. We (me and him) had overlooked one small impact on the board (maybe because it was raining but i truly wonder if he hadn't purposely not thoroughly checked the gear before - in any case I should have been much more cautious during this phase of the rental). So, coming back to the shop, he looks at the board, see this small impact and start investigating like Sherlock Holmes. Did you fall? There is a hair (!!) stuck in the impact, did you hurt your head, did you hurt your leg? Coming close to my face and leg to check if he could get any evidence and charge me for this super minor impact- UNREAL. And, of course, he wouldn't find anything since I hadn't fall during this slow cruising session in the bay. All in all, my advice is AVOID LONG TERM RENTAL in this shop. If there is so much trouble for a couple of hours, believe me after one or two weeks they will find a way to charge you and it will be a very frustrating experience. There are lots of great other rental companies, such as Quatro/Goya (heard it's a good deal and only a few blocks away), Starboard/HotSails (great gear) or even NaishSails (right after SecondWind in the same building). Again, don't be fooled by how the store looks (it looks great) and be mindful in your choices. When riding in waves the first thing you want is peace of mind. Aloha to all. read more

Kiteboarding Rental business model is poor - not customer friendly at all. In order to rent, you must pay 95$ for a one hour verification of your skills. The initial salesman said that you can use this as a lesson, however next day another said you cannot it is just for them to watch and verify. You meet an instructor at the beach use his/her gear for an hour then pack up, drive back to the store, and with instructors blessing, you can rent, drive back to the beach etc.... the verification does not buy u anything other than permission to rent from them and only them (so no iko certification). I was trained by Iko instructors 8 years ago but they weren't giving out cards back then. Issues and suggestions 1) it does not take an hour to figure out whether one is safe to rent. 5 min talking with rider in store and 10 min on beach once kite is inflated 2) let the renter stay on the beach with equipment once he/she passes 3) if your going to charge for an hour, see if IKO will approve retro certification or treat it as a full lesson ... number 2 still applies rider should stay on the beach and keep knitting. If second wind does not change policy, call around there are much more reasonable choices in Kahului with excellent gear. read more

Awesome customer service!! I was hesitant buying a sup without seeing it with my own eyes, carrying it, and feeling it. They were the nearest dealer for a specific board I was looking for and have been researching for a few months. I live on Kauai and called their shop and they had the board in stock!! Jay sent me pics which eased my hesitation. He assured me they would pack it properly, called me when he put it on Aloha air cargo and asked me to call him when I received it. Great communication. Photograph the boards you rent or you will get nailed for pre existing dings. Also, review strapping methods to your vehicle and be sure to get proper protection between the board and the strap or they may get you for strap damage. Evidently they have insurance which we were not aware of. We argued in our defense and I will say they did not charge us for any damage. Just beware, document, and have fun. read more

I've been going to Second Wind for years for windsurf gear and rentals. Always really friendly and helpful staff! I just bought a board rack for my car from them and the service and price were great as usual ! They even put the rack on the car for free and gave me free pads for it! (Last place I bought a rack - in Calif. - they charge 50 bucks for installation and no free pads). Always love shopping there-always good prices and a happy, friendly place! read more

Kevin and his team set me up with a beautiful 14' SIC for the Paddle Imua and OluKai races down the Maliko Run, plus a cool surf board for play on non-race days. I couldn't have asked for better customer service -- everyone in the shop was great, answered a bazillion questions and gave us good tips, plus really worked to make things affordable and easy. My friends who rented boards from other places were jealous and many locals swore by Second Wind, noting their integrity and friendliness. I definitely had one of the best rental boards at the races; I almost hate to post this as I know it will just make it harder to get a board next year. It was wood and they were charging 79 bucks for a board we could get in Lahiana for 35 dollars at HIC! Bad business DO NOT RECOMMEND you wasting your time at this shop...
