Gets 1 star for the view of the lake. Staff pleasant but incompetent. Issues brought to their attention were never addressed during a 5 day stay. Blaming "outside company issues ". Example: Could only get 1 station on the cable TV. Told me they would send someone the next day. Still waiting. Called again. Was told that they would notify the cable company tomorrow. Still not resolved. Called again and was told there was no timeline to address this issue. I love rustic but clean would be better. There are no planned activities until after Memorial Day. No pool or pool chairs to lounge in . It is currently 85 degrees bright sunshine. On site dining is a joke. Same menu for lunch and dinner. read more

I have fond memories of coming here in the summer with my extended family when I was growing up, so I may be better able to overlook some of this place's shortcomings with my rose-colored glasses. Still, I enjoyed my recent stay here and plan to return. Barkley Lodge is arguably the grandest in the state park system. Perched high above the lake with a glistening blue pool, each room faces the lake and has a view of the sunset. Speaking of rooms, they are currently renovating the east wing, but our west wing room looked refreshed. Renovations might still be a bit of a work in progress, as it looked like there was a space in the dresser for a mini fridge (but no fridge), and the updated counter in the bathroom was supported by a bare board with some visible screws. Housekeeping could use some improvements, as the toilet wasn't thoroughly cleaned when we arrived, and when I walked barefoot to the bed after my shower, I collected some animal hair on the bottoms of my feet. We also noticed that a couple of lightbulbs had burned out and not been replaced. The meals in the lodge were disappointing. I remember delicious buffets and a carving station while Mae Perdue played the organ and servers scurried around in crisp uniforms. Their attire is more casual now, with many in Barkley t-shirts or polos, and the buffet seemed sad. We skipped the buffet the first night in favor of a local restaurant after we walked through and were unimpressed with what was being served, and we felt underwhelmed (and a bit ripped off) when we got breakfast there the following morning. I asked my parents if the food in the lodge had been "meh" when we used to go there, and they both said that we always used to get the buffet and that it had been very good. There used to be a small coffee shop in the downstairs of the lodge, but it has been turned into the game room, and the old game room is now a room with information on local wildlife. What hasn't changed is the plethora of outdoor activities, the abundant wildlife, and the family-friendly activities all throughout the day. My husband and I were actually disappointed when we realized we had missed one of the educational sessions on local wildlife during our stay. Despite its shortcomings, I have a love for this place that runs deep. I hope that renovations mean that they are improving all around, as I would love to see Barkley recapturing the glory of days gone by. read more

What an amazing view of Lake Barkley ! This state park is the flagship park for the Kentucky state park system located in Cadiz Ky! The food was fabulous! The service was outstanding. Margo was our server and she was so nice!!! This was a Thursday evening and they offered a menu and full soup and salad bar which was full of healthy choices!!! My husband and I ordered the rib-eye sandwich and loved it. Just $14. My brother got the famous Kentucky Hot Brown and it was great too! The Hot beer cheese wirh warm soft pretzels hit the spot! I hesitate to give such a glowing review because I'm hopeful that the crowds never find this gem of nature. This state park is awesome, we camped there and used the beach area at the lake too. The staff was friendly, kind and helpful. If I'm not mistaken, within the state park is a Federal Wildlife Reserve, we saw deer everywhere, coyote, foxes and wild turkeys roam freely. My wife booked, and requested a lake view for Anniversary. When we arrived, we were given a view of trees, looking over a semi mud flat. Room was very dark, and musty smelling. When turned on the air to get some air moving. The AC sounded like an industrial fan in the room. It ran all night and the musty smell never left the room. While sitting on the balcony in the very outdated/rusty chairs, looking out over the "spectacular mud flat", I happened to glance at the window. Asked the wife was the glass cracked? She said there is packaging tape over the glass. I looked, and there was what appeared to be a bullet hole. Went inside, pulled the drapes away, and more packaging tape on the crack. And it did appear to be a bullet hole from the inside. Went to put drinks in the fridge, and NO FRIDGE! There was a place for one, but no fridge or microwave. The pillows on the bed could have been used for writing paper they were so thin. Wife booked this as an anniversary getaway, and it will be one we remember. Main reason for booking, was saw the ad for the seafood buffet. We ate there, and HIGHLY recommend you SKIP IT!!!! For the price charged, compared to the quality of the food...... would have been better off going to Long John Silvers. The State of Kentucky should be absolutely ashamed of this place. In the morning, we left. Even though we had intention of staying a second night originally. We drove to Paris Landing State Park, and stayed at the resort there. 10,000% difference. Lake Barkley was the location of a conference where we attended in September of 2019. The resort has a hotel, cottages, RV parking, tent camping and 4 spacious suites. We chose to camp along the shores of Lake Barkley, one of the world's largest man made lakes. During the summer, swimming, fishing, boating and water sports are popular. The Conference Center, once a grand lady among parks, is now, sad to say, a bit tired and old -- in need of attention. Some paint and some dusting might help, but it seemed like the staff was short handed. One of our fellow conference goers even had a mouse in her room. We did not eat at Windows on the Water restaurant where the fare was more expansive than the conference dining food that we were offered. It was good, but nothing to write home about. The campsite was excellently located, with water and electricity. There is no sewer hook up but there is a dump site. The view of the lake was nice and the RV parking area was level. The campsite hosts were pleasant and helpful. The campground bathrooms were in dire need of attention. Paint was flaking off the walls, shower rods were loose from the walls, the floor was not clean and there was an abundance of bugs everywhere. The laundry area, in the same building as the bathrooms, had a washer and dryer, both of which were covered in bugs and spider webs so thick, it would take an industrial vacuum to clean them up before I would use them. State budget cuts are apparently the reason for the deteriorating conditions, but there is no real reason to allow this grand dame slip past the point of no return. If cared for, this conference center could once more be a premium destination. read more

Great views, but less than stellar accommodations. PROS: Our room had beautiful views of Lake Barkley. We enjoyed a nice walk along the lake in the morning and evenings with our dog and family. This was the highlight of our stay. Another nice feature was that we could park our rented pontoon boat on their dock by our room during the day. We also enjoyed their outdoor pool during our stay...with that wonderful view. The water was very clean and enjoyable on a hot day. CONS: One word SPIDERS everywhere! Spider webs and creepy crawlers were at every inch of this lodge. Luckily we only found a few inside our suite, but unfortunately my mother in law got bit by one. I know this is an outdoor destination...but they could have least cleaned the spider webs away from where guests stay. Outdated rooms and a run down property. Our room and parts of the lodge looked like we went back to the 80s...and not in a retro hip way. The property itself, outside of the restaurant and check in area, was not taken care of. Tall weeds/grass, broken sidewalks and pathways leaving tripping hazards, weeds growing from the roof, and again SPIDER WEBS. I felt like parts of the areas looked abandoned and would be the perfect setting for a horror film. The AC unit in our room sounded like a freight train. We wanted to make coffee, but our coffee pot was growing mold. Lastly, the lodge restaurant was closed to indoor dining. I realize that COVID has affected this, but they even closed their outdoor seating area. So we were forced to carry out our food and eat them at tables on the property...with you guessed it more SPIDER WEBS! read more

We stayed here for 4 days 3 nights & really enjoyed it. A few things to note: 1. The outside pool is closed - it was the entire reason I booked this location so that was a huge let down. 2. The restaurant is closed on Monday & Tuesday (2 of the 4 days that we were there so know that before you go & plan accordingly) 3. The rooms are very outdated, no fridge or microwave In the rooms - plan accordingly. The hotel staff does let you use their microwave next to the check in counter. Even though all of those things made the experience a little less that it could've been - the location is absolutely incredible. The staff is very very helpful & kind. This park was built in the 70's. Back then it was a destination location. All the old facial are still there but with the COVID most are closed. Stables, tennis courts, fitness center, marina, amphitheater... Campground is very hilly. Some good sites for smaller RV's. Being renters we found a good site. Electricity and water included. Needed the electrical for the fan(humidity!)... Bathhouses are in desperate need of a face lift. Plenty of hot water... 3 showers and toilets does not cut it for a campsite built with 60 sites. Camp hosts are pleasant and have local knowledge. Make reservations, it fills up with way too many people per site on the weekends. read more

Nice to visit the lake but limit your time at the lodge and their restaurant. I can give numerous encounters from over the years. They can't get cooks or train them to actually know what they are doing. Service for the lodge is always terrible. read more

A pretty good park over all but the campground is not the easiest to get in and out with a big rig (40'). The roads are narrow and drops offs of a foot or more in lots of places. Only a few sites are flat, even or easy to level. The water and electricity hook ups are not always located on the left. Restrooms were clean. Trail to beach was nice. The beach looks like it needs major driftwood removal if it is going to open. It was closed when we visited. Golf course is great. read more

This was our second visit to the resort- stayed in a cabin the first time around- and in the lodge this time. We were a little surprised and disappointed that the rooms don't have a microwave, refrigerator, a landline phone or cell phone reception, nor wifi. Our room was clean with new carpeting and a beautifully designed new modern bathroom. Bedding was new and clean. Plenty of bath linens were provided. Staff was friendly. The restaurant was buffet-style only which was not a good value for us as we eat nowhere near $19 worth of food per person. The spider webs are no joke here- & I noticed that staff remove webs from the common areas, pool area, and along the walkway outside the rooms every morning- only for them to be rebuilt within hours. One has to be very careful especially after dark to remember to aim for the middle of door frames and other structures as the corners will likely be spider web covered. The spider webs and excessive flying insects made the beautiful balcony on our room inaccessible without a broom or other long-handled tools to clean off the area in order to enjoy it. Nice resort. The rooms are dated terribly but quiet. The bed, pillows and covers were comfortable. A/C worked well. View from the room is awesome overlooking the lake and marina. The bath rooms are ok. The shower head is around 5'8". So if you very tall it's a challenge. Also they have low flow shower heads so not much pressure. Check in went smoothly And the lady was friendly. The value is incredible for the location and scenery. Each room has a deck over looking the lake. Since it's a state run facility the room rates are well below what they would cost at a traditional resort. It's an older facility that just needs a little sprucing up. Wildlife was abundant and offered many photo ops. Has flat screen tvs and Internet service. Noticed this morning they are working on renovations and repairs thru 2017. So that will address some of the issues. read more

My husband and I found the Lake Barkley State Resort Park Lodge on the map we were using. We have stayed in lodges before that were dated. Not so here. We had an updated room with a vaulted ceiling and a king bed. The furniture was newer but fit the rustic lodge charm. The bathroom had new fixtures, granite countertops, stone floor and wall tiles. The view of Lake Barkley from the room's covered balcony was lovely. This lodge room also had plenty of outlets for today's modern gadgets. We dined in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. The baked catfish was tender and perfectly cooked. I loved the cinnamon bread French toast. We felt that the room and meals were reasonably priced and lower than a similar room at a chain. One minor negative was a slightly musty smell when we first arrived which cleared out after we opened the balcony door. read more

We had been coming to the Lake Barkley Lodge since 1976. The grounds, the Lodge, the lake, the food back in the day were "to die for." Not any more. My theory is that the state of Kentucky has been in a budget crisis for more than a decade and has virtually ceased to fund its state parks. The Lodge is a disgrace now. Filthy, worn out, furnishings from the 1970s, wood railings in complete disrepair, rooms are a dismal mess and of the lowest possible class, sidewalks around the lake covered with debris, filthy old carpets, etc. The once world renowned restaurant with a buffet that was second to none is now a filthy disgrace with no buffet and menu food that tastes like it's processed by a minimum wage supplier and prepared by inexperienced cooks. On the Monday we stayed in June 2019 there were a total of approximately 12 people staying at the Lodge. All discussed how the once grand Lodge has now decayed into a filth pit. All declared that they would not return. read more

We spent this past weekend at Lake Barkley Resort for a family reunion. The front desk clerk was friendly and helpful in switching our room. The towels were clean, soft and fluffy and the bed was soft and comfortable as well. We had a great time with our family. Unfortunately these are the only good things I can say about the resort!! The rooms aren't just outdated, they are dark, dank and musty smelling. The smell followed us home and I was forced to wash everything, even the clothes we didn't wear while there! There are cobwebs and spiderwebs and spiders EVERY WHERE!!!!!! On walkways, over doorways and in rooms as well as on the decks!! It doesn't appear that anyone attempts to keep the creepy life or their nests at bay. The food was passable but non-distinct. The restaurant and convention center service staff were SLOW and ARGUMENTATIVE!! You couldn't pay me to go there again or to recommend it to anyone either!!! read more

So, from the photos online, this looked like a grand place - and it was - when it was built. You can still see how amazing this hotel/restaurant were, but no one has loved on it (with a pot of money) in awhile. We stopped in after dark and got a king bed with a view of the lake - which was incredible to see the next morning. The shower was really good, bright. I could actually see. The restaurant was ho-hum. The view and the building itself are fabulous, but the grandeur is gone. Food was mediocre. I did see a baby roach walk across the salad bar. read more

Recently visited this facility. I previously stayed at the state parks and they were excellent. Unfortunately this facility has declined. The room needs a thorough cleaning ( mold in the bathroom) and the air conditioning did not work properly. The registration staff was friendly. read more

We have stayed here on several occasions. Each room has a balcony which have a nice view. They are rustic so don't expect a 5 star room. Lodge is really nice and the restaurant has always had a nice buffet. Caution! The walls in the rooms are really thin. This lodge was very disappointing for many reasons. The first being that the Lodge has a definite look of being run down. There is a difference, from being rustic, to being unkempt. We have stayed here before and it was very nice and inviting. Peaceful. This time there were spider webs with huge spiders in them on every decorative light illuminating the walkway to the rooms and ice machine. The ice machines themselves had spiderwebs with spiders in them. The room was free of spiders and bugs but the patio porch was scary. We went out the first evening to sit and talk and look out towards the lake and there were dozens of spiders in webs in between the railings of the patio structure. There were webs with spiders in them under the chairs and table. Plus the outside patio light was filthy and full of bugs and spider webs. That being said, there is more. We had a light shining into our room at night that never went out. Our room had built in ambiance overhead lighting built very high into the rafters, as well as one floor lamp and one night stand lamp The first night it was late when we turned out our lights to go to bed, so this is when we realized there was light coming into our room from up in the rafters, even tho all the lights were turned off. Given the time of night we made the best of it and went to bed. The next night the same thing happened so we called maintenance to come to see what was going on. The manager and maintenance came but had no ladder so the manager used his cell phone camera and a chair to try and see what the problem was. The manager took out the overhead lighting and also discovered a hole where conduit ran to the adjoining room. He said they would send a maintenance man to fix it the next day. We were gone all day long. We got back 10:pm. The problem had not been fixed. So we called the desk. They seemed indifferent to the problem. This made my sis mad. The front desk hung up on her. The next day 2 maintenance men show up unannounced. We let them in and the man in charge said he came to our room earlier in the day the day before and he said al we needed to do was to turn out the over head lights at night. End of problem. We told him that wasn't the problem and he argued with us. I don't believe him. I don't think he ever came to our room. Next night same problem. Maintenance came again at night and saw the problem but had no ladder. Threw towels in the corner rafter to cover the hole in the wall. Next day another guy came and said he needed foam but didnt have any. We gave up. Plus I left two articles of clothing in the closet. I called 6 times over a period of a week to ask them to check the closet. By the time they did my clothes disappeared. I learned a valuable lesson. Don't ever stay here again. Plus the indoor pool was closed down for some reason. Probably by the health department by the look of the rest of the place. I only have one good thing to say. Their restaurant was amazing. They have a wonderful, exceptional buffet. Their chef is amazing and so were the kitchen wait staff. The dining hall was immaculate. But alas I will never be back so just to let you know the food was memorable but not the Lodge or so called maintenance. read more

This is one of my favorite Ky state park resorts to stay in. Its been modernized without losing its lodge feel and charm. The beds are comfy, there's plenty of pillows and towels, and the bathroom is big enough to actually dress and get ready in (because if you're here with others, you can't be running around your room in nothing but a towel trying to get it together. Or maybe you can, I can't). My tip is to try to book a second floor room. The ones downstairs are nice, and you can walk right out to the water from your patio. But I like the vaulted ceilings and private porches on the second floor. There's even screen doors so you can enjoy cooler night with a little breeze off the water, and listen to crickets and tree frogs sing you to sleep. Not in summer, though, summers here require air conditioning! Barkley is close to so many great places to see and things to do. You can explore, or just hang out at the lodge and chill. Be sure to book in advance, though. This place fills up quick in the on season. I like coming in the off season better, because I like the quiet and solitude. But its great any time you want to go. read more

We are having our annual family reunion here. It's the third week in July 2019. We had reserved the four cottages beside each other, but one was deemed "uninhabitable" by the staff at check-in. We are in cottage 512 and after one night, here is what I have experienced: Raccoons in the attic Mice scurrying around in the bedrooms at 3am Mouse poop on the kitchen counters when we checked in One kitchen counter isn't actually attached to the cabinets, so we have to be very careful where we put things on that counter. Back porch completely covered in spiderwebs Dishes in the cabinets are dirty/sticky You can't make the doors unlock, so you have to leave them cracked if you are hanging out on the front porch, allowing bugs a way in. Screens would be a fantastic, inexpensive, necessary addition. Wasps and carpenter bees all over the front porch. Maintenance came to spray after one of our party got stung. The restaurant food was fantastic, service okay. I never got a refill of my drink since our waitress rarely came to the These cottages are NOT worth the $200+ per night we paid for them. ETA: after two more days, we have discovered that all the bottom cabinets all have lots of mouse poop in them. Three mice ran from under the fridge out second morning. The dust covering the walls is quite thick. The keys work maybe half the time. The only good thing I can say about these cabins is that the hot water works well. read more

The Lake Barkley resort is part of a Kentucky state park. It's set on a nice lake and features some amenities like a nearby marina, campground, hiking trails, etc. Overall its pleasant. However, I found it very overpriced for what you get. They charged $300/night which to me was totally outrageous. So beware of the drawbacks below... RESORT: The resort itself is nice, but showing its age. The architecture and design is impressive. Its built like a circle with all the rooms opening to an outdoor, covered walkway. Sadly, that walkway featured dead tree stumps, buckled retaining wall, and dirty sidewalks. Spider webs encrusted everything, the building needs a good power washing and fumigating. The grounds themselves were pleasant. There's ample tree shaded parking for your car. This is not the kind of resort where you can stay on the grounds for days on end. With only one restaurant (covered below) you'll need to go to town for some variety (albeit quite limited). ROOMS: The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. Built in the late 50's all three of our four rooms look like they were last updated in the 70's. Internet is truly awful when there's a lot of guests. There's almost no cell phone coverage. Fortunately, I understand that the room phone is totally free. The rooms are small, dark, and feature orange carpets with dark paneling. The walls are paper thin as we could hear every single word of the people next to us. The carpet in one room was torn, unraveled and hole was growing - it looked like it had been that way for months. All of the rooms were missing lamp shades (if you can believe it). One room had a bare light bulb in the bathroom whereas the other did not, another room had a bare light bulb in the overhead light whereas the other did not, etc. For the price of the room you'd expect something better than cheap budget motel décor and repair. However, the view is really great. The hotel was designed so that nearly every room has a great view down the hill and across the lake. RESTAURANT: The restaurant would be wonderful if the food wasn't drab and mostly bad. The restaurant features stunning views and pleasant staff. However it's run like a low-end cafeteria. The tables are bare and when you set down they give you a rolled up napkin containing your silverware. The floor was dirty and some of the plates had crusty food still on them. When we stayed they didn't offer anything off the menu - every breakfast, lunch and dinner was a buffet. Ugh. Some of the food on the buffet was really done well, but most was truly like eating in a school cafeteria. Canned green beans, canned corn, salad from a bag, desserts from a factory, etc. A few dishes were made by a real person and were tasty. However, the rest was boring and bad. HIKING: The hiking was good and the trails were both pretty and sometimes challenging. We only passed one couple on a busy holiday weekend. We were grateful that the trails weren't crowded like some others we've been on. Though the 'beaches' were really just gravel, we enjoyed being able to cool off in the lake. POOL: The pool was nice, but always crowded. It had a great view of the lake and was clean. But there was no shade and no umbrellas under which to retreat from the hot Kentucky sun. The place bills itself as a resort and you might expect cheery waitresses asking to take your drink or snack order at the pool, but not here. There's no pool service whatsoever. If you want a towel you have to bring your own. If there was a towel service it was always out, or I couldn't find it. read more

Really enjoyed our stay at the lodge for Eagle Watch weekend. The food at the restaurant, Windows on the Water, was delicious and the wait staff is very attentive. The staff was great; very friendly and very informative. The rooms were very comfortable, just wish the walls were a little thicker. We are going to stay in one of the cottages next time. They looked very nice. Great view of Lake Barkley. Lots of different programs offered at various times of the year. We look forward to going there again. read more

But when we both saw a roach crawling on the buffet around the plates and vegetables, we changed our minds. What a beautiful , relatively quiet lake not too far from Nashville. Perfect for any water sport where you'd like it calm - paddle boarding, water skiing, pontooning, paddle boating, fishing....and we did just about everything on that list. It took my daughter a little bit to get over the muddy bottom, but brung a noodle or two and littles (or easily creeped out adults) can float until the adjust.
