My family and I have been coming to this lake campground for years, and we always enjoy our visits.The campsites are spacious and relaxing, making it a wonderful place to disconnect from daily life and spend quality time with family. We also love seeing the many animals and wildlife around the campground, which adds to the experience. Having showers available and water access at the campsite is very convenient and appreciated. While we continue to enjoy staying here, there are a few areas that could be improved. It would be helpful if staff were more responsive when guests call for assistance during their stay. The restroom doors could use repairs, and the restrooms would benefit from more frequent cleaning and maintenance. Better guidance for visitors when locating their campsites would also make the check-in process smoother, especially for first-time guests. Overall, this is a beautiful and enjoyable campground with great potential. I will never stay at lake Comanche again. This is my second time here. The first time was okay. That's why I came back. But this time i came in, parked my car in my parking spot. My second car came in after me. They said somebody had already parked in my parking spot. My question is, why didn't they ask the name on the? Reservation, why would they give somebody my parking spot? So they gave me the person's name. So I went around asking other campsites, is this person on their parking spot? Once I found the person I asked them to move their car. Which caused me in my neighbor campsite, to get into a argument. All this could have been avoided if lake Comanche did their job instead of hiding in the office. Our sites were 97, 98, and 99. We were right near the water and also close to the bathroom. Both those things have their pros and cons. The campsite in general has a lot of mosquitoes and yellow jacket bees. Bring a lot of bug spray, keep a fire pit going, burn some rosemary in there. Burning sage near the food did not help at all. 97 is right near the faucet and the trash bin. Not a far walk. The bathrooms have showers. They have a washer and dryer as well. If you're close to the bathroom, you will hear every flush, so I'd advise not to be right next to one. Felt sorry for the ones who were lol. During the day it's very hot, wear your spf. During the night, there's lots of bugs, again wear that bug spray. The sunset where we were was beautiful. Some campers were so loud with their music, took away from the beauty of nature. Disappointed... AGAIN! Poor Communication and Hidden Fees We had to cancel our trip due to new policy changes, and yet they still had the audacity to keep the $13 reservation fee per campsite. Since we had booked multiple campsites for a large group, we ended up losing $54 in cancellation fees -- even though we canceled two months in advance! We originally made this reservation back in February 2025 to plan ahead for our annual group trip. Since then, this entire experience has been a mess. It took days for anyone to respond to our emails (we had to follow up more than once), and calls went unanswered with no callback. Nowhere in the email exchange was the non-refundable reservation fee mentioned. When I brought it up, their only response was "we sent you the link." That's not acceptable. Basic courtesy and good customer service means clearly communicating fees -- especially when customers are trying to clarify your policy before canceling. Worse? There was zero communication about major policy changes like the no alcohol and no floaty rules. These were not in place when we booked and were never shared with us directly. We only found out because friends and family visited recently and felt harassed by constant alcohol checks. So let me get this straight: * We booked 6 months in advance * Were never notified about new policies * Canceled 2 months in advance * And we're still charged a cancellation fee due to their lack of communication? Unbelievable. We've now decided to move our annual trip to Folsom Lake -- and guess what? Someone actually picked up the phone the first time we called! Alcohol may not be allowed at the lake, but it's permitted at the campsites (take notes, Lake Camanche). RUN while you still can. Don't waste your time or money here. It was a great stay until the last day. I noticed maggots in the bathroom although the further bathroom was clean. Even more so although they have a no alcohol policy there was a woman who came right up to our camp threatening my pregnant daughter and my niece. My grand children were there and afraid. She was cussing in front of my grandson. She was obviously drunk or on something even her own family were yelling and couldn't control her. The kicker is when staff drove by her she yelled profanity at them and when we complained that we were afraid we were just told to stay at our own camp as if we approached her. I have been coming to the south shore lake since I was a child and continued on bringing my children too. Unfortunately we will no longer be coming here for day use nor yearly camping. As we always come to reserve the large group sites. They no longer allow alcohol and at first I thought it was a no glass policy but it's no alcohol at all! Can or bottle. We like to come and relax by the water with a beer,not to get drunk,but to relax. Unfortunately we were asked to leave within the hour. Then we realized how empty the park was when before you have to get here early to find a good spot. This lake is definitely losing business. All our family and friends agreed we will ve looking for a new place. I have my credit card statement showing I paid for a site. But, there has been no email or communication from Monument RV confirming my reservation. That isn't a huge deal in and of itself. First timer here at Lake Camanche and it was definitely above expectations! I kept my expectations low prior to arrival but once my friends and I pitched tents and started swimming + using the other amenities, I realized it's so much better than other sites I had visited before. Despite the blazing summer heat, it was a good time. First would like to address that we're in the wilderness and in nature, people! Bugs and other nature related issues ARE to be expected. It's funny that some people think the sites could regulate the amount of bugs or something when it's a part of nature. Maybe different parts of the site had more than others, but near 120s we had the normal flies, bees, ants, small creatures roaming. Nothing that bug spray or swatting couldn't fix. The restrooms and showers are not janky, they're obviously not ideal either, but I was so grateful to even have the ability to shower daily. That said, I think the men were a little annoyed that only one shower was working at the time but still were happy because one shower is better than none. Anyway, the campsites are huge depending which spots you reserve! Really enjoyed having a private enough area for me and my friends to camp at, and we were just two levels above the lake. The views are amazing, especially at night. My friends and I experienced little to no issues at the campgrounds, parking was easy and we enjoyed our time there! We will definitely be back in the future and I am thankful that the rangers came around to inspect often. There were some issues with other campers, but those were dealt with in timely manner. This is the worst place to go camping. I will never ever come back here. It's disgusting. How is it that in one particular season, you don't spray or fumigate this place. Cock roaches and wayer bugs every to the point we could not eat or drink without feeling sick. We could not cook or use the grills because the roaches would surround the pits. So, no barbecue, this was the craziest weekend we had spent here on top of finding out someone was murdered here the week before on the sane site we were in. No one when checking in bothered to tell us anything. And because of that, we had sheriffs policing us the whole time. Park Rangers came by to tell us to put our movie screen down and not to put it back up the next day. Wtf was that about. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The bathrooms again were disgusting. What are we paying for? After the last review, i thought It would be different, so i booked right after we left last year. I would never recommend this place to anyone, and i brought more friends, and they said, " DONT EVER BRING ME BACK HERE AGAIN," Then they said we have much better camps. They were so pissed. Absolutely worst camping experience ever. This has been a camping destination for my family and I for years l, but this year will be the LAST. The new policies are not only unnecessarily strict but they devastate family traditions and the overall camping experience. There are families that follow the rules and can consume responsibly. If you want to have a beer with your bbq and enjoy the sunset, don't come here. If you want to be harassed and treated like criminals, come here. Some people who were invited to our campsite, broke the rules and consumed alcohol. The rangers asked them to leave by 8am. So we woke up at 6am. Helped them pack, and took them home (a 30 min drive from the campsite). We return to be told we must book a new campsite. So we did, $80+. Then they return and say the CAR cannot be here. We only have one vehicle. The people who broke the rules have been evicted. Why is the car an issue? AFTER WE PAID. So we left. If only they would've told us the car had to be out then we would have never paid AGAIN. We felt robbed, villainized, and targeted. I hope it wasn't our huge Mexico flag that hanged on our canopy that had them treating us like CRIMINALS. We did our best to uphold the policies but at the end of the day, after they took our money, we left to avoid further harassment. They had nothing else better to do since a large portion of the campsites were EMPTY. I think everyone got the memo that Lake Camanche is cancelled. Save your money! Go to any other beautiful campground in the area that will value your patronage and your MONEY. What a joke and undeniably traumatic experience this all was. Horrible horrible horrible. read more

The worse of worse is that there ARE A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF COCKROACHES at night time ALL OVER the campsites, EVERYWHERE. It is not possible to walk two steps without seeing multiple of them. It is like a horror movie that my kids kept screaming at night and we were so afraid to leave our campsite to the bathroom. One of the cockroaches must be hidden on one of my items and when I got home, it was crawling in my car, absolutely disgusting! I still can't skill that cockroach inside my car and I had to buy cockroach baits and left the baits in the car. I am extremely worried that the cockroach may be leaving baby roaches and get my home infested. We stayed at the South Shore Sugarloaf campsite #92 for the July 4th weekend for 3 nights. My friends stayed at campsites 94 to 98, for a total of 12 families camping together. Each campsite can take up to two cars, and you just pay $18 extra per night for the second car. The campsites are very lowly maintained, the women's bathroom lights were totally out on the bathroom side (both lights) so it is very dark at night time, though the shower side had the light on. The showers are dirty and one of the three stalls is broken. The toilet seat paper is constantly out without replacement. There was also no hot water in the shower! We had to call the park services to have them come and clean the toilets because apparently people checked off the service log but no cleaning. My husband complained about the men's bathroom. One of the toilets was clogged, one of the showers was broken. That meant a LONG line waiting for the shower stalls while there were so many campers for the long weekend. Also no hot water in the men's shower room. This is by far the worse, dirtiest, and lowest maintained campsites I have been at. The park ranger and services seriously need to start doing something at this Lake Camanche camp ground. One of the benefits of this campsite is that you can swim at the lake, or bring water equipment to play. read more

We've been camping at Lake Camanche for over 10 years, and unfortunately, this was by far the worst experience we've ever had. Every year we reserve the large group site for 72 people, with 15-20 families attending, many with young children. On our first night, Park Rangers were hiding around the site monitoring us. One of my guests had a single beer, and because of that, the rangers abruptly kicked out our entire group. I was awakened by them yelling at my guests, and despite my attempts to reason with them and assure it wouldn't happen again, they refused to work with us. This was an unnecessarily harsh reaction to a minor mistake, and it completely ruined the trip for dozens of families. We've always looked forward to this annual tradition, but after this treatment, I will be canceling our reservation for next year and will not be returning. read more

We met the kindest maintenance worker, his name is Tony at south shore lake Comanche, he assist with our needs right away. And we always found him to be very busy at his job that guy was doing everything, what a great worker and very kind to everyone around. We had a wonderful experience at south shore lake Comanche rv premium hookup sites, beautiful in front of the pond and in front of the lake. My husband and I are loving the no alcohol policy for the summers. It was getting a little wild on the north side for us. We decided to switch to the south side comanche,full hookups are great. My husband loves to fish and I love a good scenery and place to lay in the sun so this worked out well for us. We loved this nook over at eucalyptus point- I'm sure it's crawling with people during the summer but since we went on an off season Monday we got to choose the cream of the crop as far as beach areas go! A few neat features about camanche 1. They have versions stocked fishing ponds - great for beginners, kids, or someone who wants to simply Snag their limit to put in the freezer 2. Clean porta-potties are scattered throughout the park. I believe they're services every 4 days (we went on a Monday and they had just been cleaned that morning) they also have brick and mortar bathrooms on the major areas. 3. Each person fishing must buy a fishing pass. I think they're around $7/ea but that money all goes into stocking more fish! 4. We all had cell phone service while out here as well which could be considered a blessing to come and a curse to others. Overall- I'd highly recommend making the trip out for the day or for a night or two of camping. Good family fun. read more

My family and I have been camping at South Shore for over 10 years. We have always had a great fun time and a great customer experience with front gate people. We never had such a bad experience until this time for over 10 years! All the young ladies at the South Shore front gate needs to have more training - they all needs to be properly trained on how to greet customers with a happy face and to have a pleasant attitude with customers. The ladies were are all so rude. But expect the older lady...the older lady was very nice and she had a pleasant customer friendly attitude. Ok now... let's get to the real topic for my review. Each year for over 10 years, we've always reserved 5 days stay. Our site was always a group site and are allowed 24 people and 6 vehicles. When some of our party had to leave we were always able to return the parking tags at front desk to have the parking tag for another vehicle that came out later. We have never reached over our capacity of persons on our site, and we've always made sure on how many vehicles are parked at our campsite. If there were more than 6 vehicles on our campsite, then they would always pay for daily use passes. But this time it was such a big hassle and issue with this specific RANGER GREG PERSON regarding how many vehicles or how many people are coming to our campsite. Ranger GREG PERSON didn't allow this process. GREG PERSON said "WHICHEVER COMES FIRST POLICY" - 24 people or 6 vehicles. He will not allow any other people or vehicles enter into our site, because "they've done so much for us already" (whatever that means). And that we're at capacity. Greg declined to check when we asked him to go check our campsite. Ranger GREG PERSON also had the audacity to say the we were sneaking people in. Why the hell would we need to sneak people in when we didn't even meet the capacity of people! We are not the type of people to be sneaking anyone into our campsite. We only left campus when needed to get ice bags. We were always able to drive in and out of the gates to buy some ice at the local store near town and we never had an issue or anyone accusing us of sneaking people into our campsite. And now my brother drove 3 hours to get here and wasn't allowed in. The front desk wouldn't let him in, because of Ranger GREG PERSON didn't allow it, said we're over vehicle capacity. (We had 5 vehicles parked at our site and still had 1 vehicle tag left for my brother to park, and had 18 people at our site) GREG PERSON said the only way this would work to let my brother into our campsite is that we had to pay for another campsite (we've already paid total of $1,144 for our reservation stay). So of course, since my brother drove 3hrs to get here and it's 10:30ish pm. I paid for another campsite $54.75 to let my brother in, while paying for the additional site the lady that took my payment said my brother isn't allowed on our campsite. Really!?! The Ranger GREG PERSON said "the only way this would work" is for me to purchase another site, which I did!! When some people of our party left with their vehicle that didn't stay for the whole reservation days, we were always able to switch out the vehicle tags for the next vehicle that were coming into our group campsite. We've been doing this for over 10 years. There's nothing stated on their website, or on our itinerary, or receipt payment, or emails reminders of our upcoming stay that states a "WHICHEVER COMES FIRST POLICY" If the Ranger Greg Person and or the front gates ladies had an issue or doubts with head counts and vehicles on our campsite then they should ALL JUST DO THEIR JOB! GO CHECK how many people and vehicles are on our campsite...then there wouldn't be such an issue and I wouldn't have had to be pressured to purchase another campsite. From reading some of the others reviews that had the same issue as us. Ranger GREG PERSON is definitely prejudiced towards Asian people. Ranger GREG PERSON made our stay a nightmare. He was very happy and enjoyed giving our group a really hard time, with also threatening to call the Sheriff and then forcing us with no choice to purchase another site WILL NEVER COME BACK CAMPING HERE. Unless if this Ranger GREG PERSON is no longer working at this lake, and all the young ladies at the front gate are all properly trained to have a nice attitude with customers, then we may think about coming back. read more

Spoiler Alert: there are roaches. Feeling excited and giddy as we turned through the soft curves leading up to the lake. The hour and 45 minutes it took to drive after strategically packing the car like Tetris blocks was worth the immediately calming views of tree-lined streets with a few horse ranches in between. We had waited for a over a month for this much needed vacation that the kids looked forward to as much as their parents. As we pulled up to the gate it was quick and easy to get in. For the Sunday before the 4th of July it wasn't too crowded. The heat of midday was evident as it quickly sucked out the cool, air conditioned atmosphere we had become accustomed to during the journey. The girl in the window was nice and highlighted the way to our campsite on a map. The excitement intensified to an antsy eagerness as we drove the lakeview and tent-lined path to our site. We hopped out the car, and after saying our hellos to the rest of our camp group, we quickly unloaded the car and set up our tent so enthusiastically that we had nearly forgotten it was a suffocating 98 degrees. All set up, and pouring sweat, the adults tried to enjoy the shade of the merciful trees that surrounded our site while the kids yanked at our shirts begging to get into the lake. We had a great view of the lake from the Moccasin site 191 and we were so close, so, what the heck, we all changed and went to sway in the tepid reservoir. The water changed from warm to cool in different areas, as we floated around with the pieces of vegetation that wafted up from below. Everyone was happy, enjoying their fun in the sun while playing water games and pretending to swim with life jackets or just drifting along in an inflatable. A couple of hours and wrinkly fingers later it was time to get out as the hunger pangs kicked in. Back to the camp, we rinsed off a little at the faucet next to the site. But it wasn't long until a full refresh was needed as lots of debris from the lake had worked its way to hidden places underneath my swim gear. As the men got the grill in order, I walked the not so long, but sweltering path to the women's bathroom prepared to quickly shower and redress. Thankfully, there was no line or any crowding, but the grimy floors and walls, and mirror from a horror movie were not exactly welcoming. Carefully stepping into the shower with my flip flops, I didn't want to touch anything, let alone hang my towel on the door. But luckily, I had thrown the necessities in a plastic grocery bag which I used to hang on the hook behind the door as I tried my best to get clean despite the spiders, wasps, and mosquitos (dead and alive) that hovered above. I made it out safely and although showered, I still walked out of there not feeling so clean. Back at camp, we ate, and laughed and played games all while gazing at the view of the lake which looked as if it stretched to the horizon. The sky transitioned to a burnt orange as the sun began its descent. Then it was time to see what kind of fish was going to take our bait. We headed to the bank to cast and prop up a couple of poles to see what we would catch. A few bluegills fell for the trap but fortunately for them they were too small to keep and were thrown back to swim another day. As we packed up thinking about a campfire and s'mores, a black looking bug crossed our path. "Look at that," one of the kids said. "Is that a beetle?" another asked. As I looked a little closer, I thought to myself that it was a big cockroach, then someone else said it out loud. I shuddered at first, then shrugged it off seeing as we were at the shore of a lake in the middle of nature. The night had come, the stars shined bright, and the fire pit was lit as we lit marshmallows on fire to smash between graham crackers and chocolate. Highly recommend off season camping I came in October the weather was nice it wasn't too cold and it was extremely quiet and campers were spread out so you didn't have to worry about noise from the next camp site Bathrooms were clean staff were rarely seen and their little store front was nice I would still recommend coming with everything you need and not rely on them for basic necessities The only sad thing was the water levels were so freaking low it was depressing and not a pretty site. We were at south shore site 191. Haven't been camping in Camanche in years. As soon as the sun went down our site was infested with COCKROACHES!!! Hundreds and hundreds. I slept in the car it was so bad. The bathrooms were clean and well kept but the cockroaches ruined it for me. Unfortunately I will not be able to go back. Keep your tents closed no gaps in zippers because your tent will get them in. I'm sad to say it ruined my trip. read more

Amazing and clear water, love it for the dogs, the dog park is amazing and makes camping so much more fun. The hiking trail that accepts dogs is also super pretty. Great staff all around and the RV parking is very clean and close to the water. Store is always stocked and prices are reasonable. The water is super warm, which makes it feel tropical, we also love that you can see the bottom in the day use area. read more

Campgrounds were not bad. Bathrooms were maintained pretty well. The lake wasn't horribly dirty but it could use some cleaning around as there was visible trash. We did encounter outdoor cockroaches and a lot of bees that were attracted to the food. We saw a mouse upon departure. Overall, not horrible but could use some cleaning. I may come back. read more

If I could give this place a zero, I would. I was looking forward to creating beautiful memories with/for my daughters as this was their first camping trip. I mentally prepared my daughters that we are outdoors and bugs are part of nature BUT we were not prepared for what the night brought out ... ROACHES! Tons of ROACHES. The only enjoyable time was at the water but once we got back we rushed to shower and get back in our tents before the roaches came out right before sundown. We couldn't even enjoy family time or games around the fire pit like we hoped we can. During the day we were paranoid as we walked around our campsite and sleeping was a wreck because the fear of roaches surrounding our tent. Camping is supposed to be relaxing and this weekend was everything but. We will never go to this place again and I highly recommend that you cancel any reservations. Absolute worst stay I've had there in 15 years. The Pandemic didn't even stop me from coming to my favorite place to camp.....The STAFF sure did. EASTBAY MUDD needs new management or they won't make another decent dollar there period. If the concern is for the environment then CLOSE THE CAMPGROUNDS!!!! They don't make sense.. I read the responses to the negative reviews and guess what, I'm not moved by their sad, pathetic response... seems there's only one thing to do... CLOSE THE CAMPGROUNDS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PURPOSES. They claim no alcohol BUT, they let someone in with alcohol just to raid their campsite to kick campers out. Sounds like a set to me. To add insult to injury you simply cannot call the front desk to warn them about campsite confusion or an unattended child swimming in the Lake. It took strangers to force this child out of the water and when his people were found... they had no clue the child was missing. GREAT JOB CAMANCHE STAFF!!! I have for the past two summers been discriminated against, treated rudely and like a criminal. When they evict you for breaking their no alcohol rule, & you have to be off the premises at a ridiculous hour. I came prepared for 4 days. I rented 2 campsites and paid hard earned money for my nieces, nephew and grandchildren to have a great time. Because I didn't want my family (children 16 & under) to be scared and worried about why we had to wake them up at 4 am like prisoners to be gone by 8 was unrealistic. The end result was having Amador County Sheriff's Department called on us. We were harassed by staff all morning. I was told by Sheriff that having alcohol there isn't illegal, just their stupid rule convinced me that I was set up. You cannot drink at Camanche, you cannot Boat, paddle board or jet ski at Camanche, you can barely bring floaters. They want people to rent their shabby boats to have fun on instead. No thanks! The quality of customer service has declined. They discriminate based on race. They don't even have their own information correct on their sign that says you can be cited or evicted for having alcohol. Mind you NO ONE WAS DRINKING. We did not get caught with drinks in our hands. They surrounded our campsite like they were ICE or SWAT. Greg Persons and his band of followers. The ringleader who came to our site definitely has an issue and the worst attitude I've ever had to deal with. Last year he accused my family of camping illegally... He was rude and didn't have proof of anyone drinking anything. He just saw 2 beer bottles on a table.... Again I feel this was done on purpose by a group of staff who on purpose allowed alcohol inside the premises and then said let's go get them out of here. When they see alcohol inside a vehicle DO NOT LET PEOPLE INSIDE THE CAMPGROUNDS! Simple right. WRONG! This is a way for Camanche to take your money. I need the staff to provide proof, not word of mouth that I or any of my guests were drinking. Physical proof. This means you Greg. They do make nonalcoholic beverages. He just flashed a light and said "they have alcohol!" Should have made sure that's what it was and not by flashlight.... This is a warning to people who like to have fun when they camp... do not come to Camanche! It's jail with a Lake. Their response is the Municipal District... I call BULLSHIT! read more

Well due to the new restriction of "no" alcohol we decided to go to Don Pedro us and a bunch of friends- nice lake but the camping spots not so much. Lake Camanche south shore is great, setup and awning and chairs on the beach BBQ and a few beers on a hot day - this was our summer with family and friends. We always stay at Monument park and have our favorite spots with full hookups. Me, my kids and now my grandkids would go to the pond and fish everything is great there. we have been going for at least 40 years and now Camanche due to a few people that cannot maintain (this is everywhere you go) have made Camanche decide to punish the majority of people that used to enjoy a cold beer or cocktail on there wonderful beaches and campsites. What is the reason for punishing the majority that enjoyed Camanche as it is a great place and has always been - until now what were you thinking. I heard that citations are being issued and if you are caught with Alcohol are being kicked out, what is this 1940's Germany or Prohibition (how did that work out). Well wish us and our family and friends good luck in finding new places near Camanche for Camping this summer - hopefully once you determine the big mistake you made (very low attendance as shown in your campsite reservations) you will decide to either relax the Alcohol restrictions of remove them to survive. Or maybe not and we find another great place like Comanche and enjoy our American freedom your group took away -- GOOD LUCK!! read more
