I arrived at 8:30 pm and told the lady at the ticket booth that I wanted to watch the ferry for a bit, so she directed me to park and said that I would need to return to buy a ticket when I wanted to transit the lake. After I parked, I walked down to the ferry dock, watched a couple of ferries come and go, then headed back to the parking area, climbed into my Sprinter van, and locked up for the night. Yes, I spent the night here and while that may or may not be allowed, it worked for me. At 6:00 the next morning, I work up, bought my ticket and was loaded onto the ferry about 20 minutes later. It's a 15 minute ride to cross over the lake, which I spent in the Sprinter making coffee and occasionally looking out. Super easy to cross the lake and when we arrived, the unloading was quick and I was on my way. This is a super convenient way to cross over from Plattsburgh New York to (a half hour from) Burlington Vermont. Very cool and if you are not wanting to go around the lake, this is a fabulous alternative. Another joke I bought my ticket and was told to go to line 1 Line 5 was boarding... There were 3 cars purchasing tickets behind me.. I went to line 1 and they skipped and went to line 5 making them selves the last two cars on, there wasn't room for me even though I purchase my tickets first I asked the ferry tenant about it at the booth, and they said there's nothing they can do people go where they want.... A fun and unique way to get across Lake Champlain. I took the ferry while traveling from Burlington to Plattsburgh to view a potential job. It was $12.10 each way, making it an expensive, if (sometimes) faster, way to get around the lake. When I arrived the ferry happened to be loading and I was able to get right on. I'm sure that is not always the case and the trip may take upwards of 40 minutes. It was fun riding the high seas as the ferry rocked back and forth in the wind and the lake water mist sprayed up on my windshield. That being said, I would not want to do it every day. read more

I was a bit terrified as 1) I get seasick and 2) we were wedged into a "spot" on the side with parts of the boat on each side...if that ferry was to have somehow sank, we would have died as I don't know how we would have gotten out of our car. We took this car ferry to get from Burlington, Vermont to Plattsburgh, NY on our way to Montreal in September. It was kind of expensive, did not take very long, no problems really. Stable ship. You can get out of the car if you want or just sit inside. They direct you to the lane on the ship to stop. They don't serve any meals and there is no entertainment either. Would be a better experience if they offered a champagne toast when you boarded like on Princess or Celebrity. It's just a simple car ferry to get across the lake. Someone had to put a lake there so now you have to pay for a ferry to get across it. read more

Took the ferry(today, 11/24) to Plattsburgh at 14:10 and then returned at 18:11 back to Vermont. By now, I am used to very little customer service but the Lake Champlain Transportation Company takes the cake. I get it, it's a non-stop operation to take people, their vehicles, and whatnot to and from NY/VT. That said, for 18 dollars each way, a thank you would go a very long ways. Been riding the Cumberland Head ferry since 1996 for work. Always had a full size pickup truck. Lately they have charging almost an extra $5.00 because I have a pickup. It's also hit or miss some do, some don't. It's more on the Vermont side. This ferry system provides an important link between Vermont and New York. It seems the owners are into a money grab. The toll booth attendant was extremely rude. It's very sad that this company has so much political power in Vermont that they allowed to get away with it. read more

The ferry from plattsburgh runs year round and goes back and forth often and is reliable. The ferry between port Kent and Burlington is summertime only and takes about 1.5 hour trip one way. It's very picturesque. It's a nice way to go from nys to Burlington and back for a day or night out. Hey they're not gonna build a bridge and it's a long way around to avoid the $10 ferry fee. Ah. The joy of putting your car on a boat! This is one of the easiest ferries to ride. The Grand Isle - Plattsburgh ferry runs 24/7 365. In summer, daytime, ferries run every 10-15 minutes. Yes, there is a published schedule, but it's more a guideline. The ferry arrives at the dock, unloads the cars, fills up with waiting cars, then leaves. If you are going off hours then definitely pay attention to the schedule. No reservations necessary. Just show up at the dock, take your place in line, get on the next boat. There was one time, years back, I think it may have been Memorial Day evening, when I could not get on the first ferry. As of August 2018 - it's $10.75 for car and driver. $4.50 for each additional adult passenger. You are allowed to leave your car in the parking lot, for free, for up to 72 hours. So you could actually make a bicycle loop around Lake Champlain starting and ending at the ferry. read more

We were staying in Plattsburgh, NY during our ride back from Quebec. We were planning a scenic route through Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire areas before heading back home to South Carolina. We then saw that there was a ferry leaving from near by us to an island off Vermont coast. Then a bridge would take us into some scenic roadways through the Vermont mountains. We rode to the nearby dock and there were two ferry docks (three total) operating affording a short wait across the bay of Lake Champlain. The ride was smooth and scenic, a nice comfortable cruise. The cost was $7.00 per motorcycle. Not sure what it is for other vehicles. They have a web site so you can check. If you get a chance and are looking for a nice adventure, give it a ride. read more

Skiing the East rather than the West in March, seeing how Mother Nature's been snowing on them more than ever this year, I flew into Plattsburgh instead of Burlington, since Allegiant no longer flies to the latter. That entails an extra half hour of driving, AND a ride on the ferry across Lake Champlain. This is pretty fast (only about 10 minutes after you get on) and convenient (the alternative means driving all the way around the lake - not a good option), but not inexpensive: $10.25 in cash, the only form of payment accepted. They have a published schedule, but from the two experiences I had, I'm not at all sure how closely they adhere to it, particularly during peak times, when it's basically running non-stop, and 'we get there when we get there'. It's smooth sailing getting on and off the boat at the direction of the folks controlling traffic. Since it was the winter, I didn't see anyone getting out of their cars; I didn't see signs saying you CAN'T, though. I do wonder if ice is an issue if when it is a cold winter. On the ride going east, the ferry was not successfully docked the first time - it had to back up a few yards, and basically ram at the ice at the dock a second time before they let cars off! So, use this service, bring cash, and (even though they are 24-hour service) be informed about how often they run the time of the day you're trying to cross. read more

Huge safety concerns with this ferry service. They wedged my mom and I into a lane that was far too small for the SUV we're driving. See attached picture. If anything were to happen and we needed to get out of the car we would literally be stuck and we would probably die in this car.
