I've been boating on this lake for 13 years, and yes--I can pronounce its full name, one of the longest place names in the world: Chargoggagoggmanchauggagaugchaubunagungamaugg. It's quite a mouthful! Purportedly the largest natural lake in Massachusetts, it's only about three miles long and one mile wide, which perhaps says more about Massachusetts lakes than it does this one. Still, it's a terrific local destination. The lake has a couple of marinas, three waterfront restaurants accessible by boat, a town beach with restrooms and a snack bar, and the popular Indian Ranch entertainment venue, which also includes an RV campground and the newer and quite good Samuel Slater's Restaurant. The lake offers something for almost everyone: fishing, swimming, boating, tubing, water skiing (there's even a water ski club), kayaking, and enough open water for all of those activities to coexist somewhat comfortably. Weekdays are wonderfully peaceful, making it easy to find a quiet cove or enjoy a leisurely cruise. Summer weekends, however, are another story. When the weather is hot, the lake becomes a very busy place. There are at least three eagle nests on the lake and one gas station. Unfortunately the gas station is currently closed. Dock space is in high demand, with waiting lists at the marinas. Development around the shoreline has steadily increased over the years. While a few natural stretches remain, nearly every buildable lot has been developed, and many of the original seasonal cottages have been replaced by sprawling year-round waterfront homes. I'm very fortunate to have this lake just a few minutes from home--and even more fortunate that I can usually enjoy it during the week, when the crowds are at work. read more

Lake Chaubunagungamaug (which is a short-cut for those who are dislexic) is a quite small inland lake near Webster. It is known as having the longest place name in the United States, but it's not clear if the name is made up (like lore is, often in these parts) or if it has any kind of Indian significance, besides not having any room to be spelled out on maps. Folks bring canoes here to ride around in circles all day long. There are 2-3 marinas, a playground and a few thick sanded beach access points. The lake has paid-access (you had to pay to get there on Memorial Day). A booth conveniently blocked any view of the lake specifically for that reason: an pricy lake fee! YAY! Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagunga-maugg lake has a long name, and that's the main feature. There's not much wind. The lake is circled in by concrete retaining walls, highways, shelters, old pot-holed roads and aqueduct embankments. The food attractions were closed in the afternoon. Some people walked circles on a track. To me, I have seen much more picturesque, beautiful and more attractive lakes, traveling around the globe. This lake is in a strange location - where no visitors go.. for good reason: Webster is a round up, run-down, blighted no-go! The longest place name in all of North America. It's Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg, or to the locals, Lake Webster. A small lake in an out of the way place, Southern Massachusetts near the corner of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Shaped a bit like a figure eight with two peninsulas that almost cut the lake in half, the name is from an Algonquin language and is humorously translated as: "You fish on your side, I'll fish on my side, and nobody fish in the middle." This body of water has a lot of history. The stories are endless and none seem to tell the truth. Memorial Beach is the main access point to the lake. You can access all the fees on Webster's website. There is also a State boat ramp on the South Pond off of Lakeside Ave. It is free, but the tiny parking lot fills up early with fishing boat trailers. Webster Lake is fondly known as Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg, or the abbreviated version that the State has given it on maps Lake Chaubunagungamaug. It consists of 3 ponds connected by "narrows". North, Middle, and South Pond. If you can get on the lake it is a lot of fun. read more

For my 400th review, I decided to go with this little FTR gem... Located along the Connecticut border, this lake is beautiful. Spend the day swimming in the water, tanning on the beach, or enjoying a nice lunch. Too lazy to pack a cooler? No worries, there's a snack bar here too. Be careful, the fishies like to nibble your legs - I learned this as my friend and her aunts were screaming from the water. I on the other hand spent the day safe on shore away from the murderous fish and those pesky turtles. ;( By the way, the spelling and translation of this lake has been disputed for years, but local residents prefer this translation: "You Fish on Your Side, I Fish on My Side, Nobody Fish in the Middle". Best name for a lake EVER! If you don't wanna tell your friends to meet at lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg then just go ahead and say Webster lake, they'll know what you're talking about. And in case you were wondering yes this is the longest name for a place in the country (6th longest in the world) and the Native American (Nipmuc tribe) translation is roughly believed to mean "You fish on your side of the lake, I fish on my side, and nobody fishes in the middle". The 1,442 acre lake (17mi shoreline) is actually considered the largest natural lake in the state. They do charge an entry fee for non Webster Residents to park there. But what you get for the money besides parking is access to the snack bar, bathrooms, and a lifeguard on duty (within regular summer hours). The beach is fairly small and the sand is rough and covered in pebbles but the lake is clean and a good place to swim in the middle of a hot summer. This is also a good place to just relax, have a picnic, play some basketball, or go for a little walk. They also have events here throughout the year to bring the community together which is nice. read more

I accompanied my friend to Webster Lake a couple times while she trained for the triathlon in the area. Err yeah.. it was hard to escape the mothers smoking around their children. Honestly, with such a small beach area and a good amount of picnic area, is it really necessary to invade my fresh air? And leaving your cigarette butts in the sand? What kind of example is that? The water is VERY clear (and happily sans trash/cigarette debris). It kind of freaked out my friend who was swimming in a lake for the first time. heh The beach however can be rocky in some parts and you'll get stuck on one if you don't arrive early enough. I had two towels down and it did the trick. The stand they have with drinks/ice cream is cute and pretty cheap slash a life saver. And the public bathrooms aren't too gross. Oh and I almost forgot.. I love love LOVED watching the tweeners try and flirt with the lifeguards. It was like watching a coming of age movie where the underage girl doesn't get the legal boy in the end. Thank goodness for that (I wanted to keep my ice cream down). It's pretty far out for me to come back on my own, but perhaps since the water is so beautifully clear. Parking costs a little moola.. but we parked in town and did the relatively short walk. 3.5 stars rounded up. read more

Don't worry if you're not from the area and can't pronounce the lake with the big long name. Like many other, I just call it Webster Lake. No worries, people will know what you're referring to. Great place to bring the kids. Both the beach and the lake are clean and spacious. Not the kind of zoo you find at some of the other parks in the area. read more

My parents have been bringing me to this lake ever since I was in diapers. It's not only beautiful, but also very clean and usually not too noisy with passing boats and jet skis- especially if you frequent North or South Pond rather than the bigger and busier Middle Pond. Plus the waters are calm enough to kayak in, and there's plenty of little coves and mini islands to explore. There's a fireworks show that goes on every fourth of July, and they don't skimp on the amount of bang they deliver. Besides just on the 4th, many people across the lake like to set off fireworks all summer long, and if you have a decent spot you can often catch a free show yourself. The fish are fed bread by the people who live there year round, so if you tend to float in the water for too long, they'll start to nibble at you. They see you as a giant chunk of bread. Either way it's nothing to be concerned about, and can be avoided if you keep moving or use an inner tube. Really the name alone should make you wanna go there. read more

Omg I drove here from Boston and it was a waist of time it is beyond gross first off there is smoking everywhere on the beach so if you think this is a family beach/lake wrong. Parking was 25 dollars and I left after 30 minutes for my 2 out of 3 children have asthma. Also on top of it I'm pregnant and didn't like smelling cigarettes. People are smoking all around their kids it's disgusting. I had to leave also no refund was given back to me when person who took my money in the front clearly stated leaving so soon. I explained why I was leaving for my children have asthma and people are smoking all over the beach and I was told to call the town. Tones of boats and jet skis are in the water so there is lots of oil. read more

While this is an awesome name for a lake, it is $30 for a car to enter. Maybe if you have children with you its a great day, but to spend a few hours on a beach by yourself its a rip-off. read more
