My two boys thrived there and have exceptional dental hygiene and zero fear of dentists now as adults because of Dr Joe. Yesterday my son had an emergency situation right at closing time. Two front teeth broken when he got whacked in the mouth with a racket- and nerves were exposed. Dr. Joe and staff were so amazing. He stayed 2 1/2 hours past office hours to fix my sons teeth. End result looks incredible, like nothing happened! We had a great experience with Dr. Joe and his team for our 2.5 year old twins. We were referred by our pediatrician, who sends her kids here. The practice is super clean and well organized and its completely kid-centric. It was our first visit, yet we were all greeted by name. They have a process they step the kids through to make the visit fun (see my photos). We were given the chance to accompany our twins or let them go on their own. We chose the latter, but then got the invitation to peek in on them at various stages, and to my surprise they were actually having fun--at the dentist! At the tail end of their visit we were sat down in a consultation room and filled-in our the details of our boys' dental health, what they should be doing every day, how we can help, etc. We left with a nice packet of information as well as some photographs taken during their visit. They applied fluoride without informing us that it will cost us extra and it's also more than double the cost of our other dentist. They charged our card for it before we even knew we were going to have to pay anything. Took my kids to see "Dr." Joe and had a horrific experience. My young son needed some dental work and he did not know what he was doing. He even dropped a tool in his mouth and barely grabbed it just in time so it didn't choke him. He does not like parents in the room as he told me to stop talking when I just asked him one question after he nearly choked my little boy. Dr. Joe came highly recommended to us by a fellow parent. Dr. Joe and his staff are warm and friendly but at the same time very professional. If you need hand holding & coddling as a patent this may not be the best fit. On our first visit I sat down with Dr. Joe and his assistant and we reviewed our medical history and filled out several forms. Dr. Joe has a strict policy of having children separate from parents during visits which may seem a bit draconian but is understandable as parents can project fears & anxiety onto their children about visiting the dentist. I felt, after meeting the staff and dr. Joe that my children would separate easily. This was the case and all of our visits have been a breeze. The kids actually love visiting the office and coming in for routine check ups. Dr. Joe is also very meticulous about following up and checking in. I received messages at home from Dr. Joe checking in to make sure everything was fine with one of my kids who needed a tooth extracted. Dr. Joe also works very well with children who have special needs. In our case his policies and procedures work out quite well. A note on administrative matters - school dental forms are filled out & faxed in a timely manner. Same experience with insurance billing. Unsympathetic to working moms! My son went in for his 2nd appointment at Lake Forest Pediatric Dentistry today. While the staff is kind and the office is clean , I left there feeling incredibly uncomfortable today. When we were checking out and I went to make our next appt, I was told that I was not allowed to schedule an appt because I had rescheduled this current one about 3x. Instead - I could only call in to schedule a 'day of' appt (hoping that someone cancelled that day). Now - we are a family of 5 with 2 working parents. As many of you know - meetings and business travel are often scheduled very last minute. Whenever I rescheduled a dentist appt it was always because of work, and I made sure to reschedule at least a few days in advance. I was NOT at all happy that Dr. Joe's office was penalizing me for this. I am actually so unhappy by this that we will probably end up switching dentists. I'd prefer going somewhere that is understanding and accommodating to the realities of parenting and busy/forever changing schedules. read more

Dr Joe has surpassed any of my expectations for child anxiety. His approach is for the children not the needy moms that need to be attached. I have a 3 year old that is not only very shy but suffered a very traumatic injury to his teeth. Dr Joe not only made him feel comfortable and safe but also came in on his day off to re adjust a brace and followed up with text messages. His experience and high tech office is fantastic. His staff is beyond incredible and supportive. In my experience my child was alway happy and comfortable, which I have never seen before visting a doctor. I have 2 boys and have been with Dr Joe Gordan for over 20 years. I still remember my first visit to his office when my oldest son was only 4 years old. I didn't know at the time that he was a special needs child. I went to 2 other dentists before I was referred to Dr Joe from Dearhaven daycare in lake forest. Dr Joe handled him in a very professional manner and he genuinely cared about my son. My son fought him but Dr Joe understood him. I will never forget that day and we are still going to him even though it is out of our way. The staff is great and Dr Joe is like family to us. He has been there for the kids though wisdom teeth and braces and I believe he has prevented further dental issues up to adulthood. My children and I had 2 visits to Dr. Joe's office last week. Both times positive experiences for my kids. One of my children is very nervous about anything that happens in a clinical setting due to 3 trips to the ER that ended in stitches or staples (ouch) - traumatic memories for her which can be easily triggered. Dr. Joe is able to distract her and manage her appointments for cleanings and fillings with ease. A notable task. The kids love the wii games and array of movies to choose from. We are residents of the lake bluff/lake forest area and we like to support local businesses and services. Due to the close proximity of this pediatric dentistry to my son's school, and the fact that it is close to our neighborhood, we decided to give this pediatric dental practice a try (we just recently moved). I have never written a negative yelp review, but i thought it was important to share this experience so other parents can decide if this is the right office for them. While setting up an appointment, I was told that the office liked to bond with children and that they ask parents to wait outside. I told them I did not have an issue with this as long as my child is comfortable and is willing. However, I also did say to them that if my child preferred, I would like to stay with him for the first visit. They assured me that most kids separate easily from their parents and I assumed that this meant if a child did not separate easily, parents could stay with their child. My child is 4, and on this particular day he was a little timid and did not want to separate from mom. I nudged him to separate, but after a couple of tries, I could tell he was frightened and did not want to. I did not think it was a big deal and simply asked if I could just stay with my child throughout this first visit. I was surprised and shocked with the outcome. I was told by the very nice staff that I cannot stay with my child, even though my child was extremely scared and unwilling to separate. I merely thought it was the staff trying to do their job, thus I decided to speak with Dr. Gordon directly and asked if I could just stay with my child throughout this first appointment. I was surprised and shocked when he not only refused to accommodate this request but insisted he was the only expert and his way was the only way. I very politely told him that I know my child and that this will not work for this first visit (my child at this point was hiding behind my back and did not want to separate). He continued to insist upon the necessity of not allowing parents to accompany their children during visits and stated more emphatically that he is right, and that he "is" the child expert. I once again very politely stated that I understand his perspective, but that my child is scared and I would like to stay with my child. He refused yet again and continued to insist upon his expertise. I then very politely informed him that I am a medical anthropologist who studies children in medical settings and that his "expertise" is not the only right way. I was hoping that he would finally understand that my child sincerely did not want to separate and that he genuinely needed a parent's presence. I was shocked when he did not make any attempts to accommodate my child's fears/needs. I politely told him that we will find another office that is more amenable to our reasonable request. It was unfortunate we stumbled upon this office. It was very easy to find another pediatric dentist where parents are allowed to stay with their children, if they so wish. Every child is different and health professionals in any field that work with children should realize that there are always exceptions when it comes to children's personalities and temperaments. From my work, I know that medical professionals go out of their way to accommodate children's fears and needs, and that being able to stay with one's child during medical treatment is now standard medical practice as long as it is not an emergency or life-threatening situation. Medical situations can be intimidating for parents and children alike and our medical professionals should always accommodate children's sincere needs and fears (and most times parents DO know their child best and the majority of health professionals actually advise parents to speak up about their child's sincere fears and needs). We have always had very caring and thoughtful health professionals and having worked with numerous doctors and nurses over the years, I can say this experience is certainly the outlier. read more

We have been patients of Dr. Joe Gordon's for four years. My children are seven, five, and twins who are two. Our experience has been nothing less than spectacular. The expertise, patience, and care that Dr. Joe and his staff have shown towards me and my children has been top notch. I have always been impressed with his sense of awareness regarding the needs of children and what is best for each child. I never have been told that I had to stay in the waiting room. Although that is what I choose to do. One of my twins had a hospital experience a week prior to seeing Dr. Joe. The morning of our appt. he sat down with his staff and reviewed the special needs of my son and how best to handle him and the sensitivity of the situation. I know for a fact that he does this same thing with each and every patient. He wants the experience to be as positive as possible and he and his staff go to great strides to make that happen. They do not treat all as equals but decide what is the most nurturing path for each patient. Amazing! During that visit I was invited to sit in the chair with my son in my lap during his teeth exam to ease any anxiety he may have. This was solely Dr. Joe's suggestion. My children often ask when we can go back to see Dr. Joe. I have heard endless times how they "love Dr. Joe" and they can't wait to go back to see him. I was an elementary teacher and have my masters in education. I know first hand that we need to trust those who are the experts. Dr. Joe has my ultimate trust. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Joe Gordon and Lake Forest Pediatric Dentistry. My kids have been patients there since 2003, when my first-born was one year old (they are now 7 and 9). I know MANY families who use this dentist, and I have also recommended Dr. Joe to several families who still thank me to this day. They thank me because their kids (and my kids) LOVE going to the dentist. They don't just tolerate it -- they actually LOOK FORWARD to going, as in "When is my next appointment?!" Of course, they didn't always love it, and there were a couple of times early on when each of them cried, but they never left upset and they never dreaded going back. Believe it or not, Dr. Joe and his staff actually know what they're doing(!), and I'm sure they have found it easier to deal with an upset child than deal with a high-strung parent breathing down their neck. I was actually appalled to read the one-star review posted here. Can you imagine someone coming into YOUR workplace, undermining you in front of your clients (patients), and telling you how to do a job that you (not they) are trained to do?!? I'm sure Dr. Joe realizes that there are many ways to go about performing dental work on young children, but he has built a successful practice and is thus entitled to do things HIS way. I might also venture to say that he has studied enough child psychology to know that children ALWAYS do better without their parents present. They are stronger, more resilient, better listeners, and (I venture to say), better patients. Of course, both my children at one point wanted me to sit by their sides and hold their hands, but Dr. Joe and his staff were firm in their position and it quickly became apparent that their way is the best way for all parties involved. If they made an exception for just ONE patient by allowing a parent to stay with their child ("just for the first appointment" -- yeah, right), it would be a total free-for-all. So here's my recommendation: if you still wipe your 4-year-old's butt after he takes a crap, OR if you are the kind of parent who lets your child decide what is best for him or her, Dr. Joe may not be the dentist for you. If, however, you want to foster independence in your child and teach him or her to trust and respect medical professionals, I think you will love Lake Forest Pediatric Dentistry as much as I do. read more

My family moved to the area about seven years ago, less than a month after my son's first birthday. While our living room still had a few moving boxes, he fell, hitting his mouth on the corner of one of them. One of about four teeth he had at the time started bleeding at the gum. We called the dentist recommended by our realtor (Dr. Lisa Konz, who, BTW, turned out to be wonderful and is still my dentist) and asked if she could in turn recommend a pediatric dentist. She recommended Dr. Joe. After making an appointment, we took our son to see Dr. Joe immediately. The office staff was warm and friendly, and Dr. Joe was great. It turned out that my son's tooth was broken underneath the gum line, and Dr. Joe suggested that we try to leave it in place for as long as possible to avoid issues with his other teeth as they came in. We visited Dr. Joe frequently for more than a year before the broken tooth came out, and my daughter also became a regular patient. After the broken tooth finally fell out, my son had to have the roots from the tooth removed, an experience that could have been traumatic. As it turned out, my son wasn't scared one bit and didn't shed a single tear. He trusted Dr. Joe and his staff. To this day, my son, who will soon turn eight, and my daughter, who is ten, love going to the dentist. If only one child has an appointment and the other does not, the one who doesn't get to visit Dr. Joe feels a little disappointed. I am very glad my dentist recommended Dr. Joe all those years ago, and I would heartily recommend Lake Forest Pediatric Dentistry to anyone looking to provide a positive experience for his or her child at the dentist. read more

Today I learned of the awful experience my 4 year year old and wife had at this practice. The fact that they insist in separating parents and children is a red flag. My wife overheard our child being talked to in a threatening way by the staff. After sharing the experience with others in the community, we heard several similar stories along with accusations of work being performed and billed that was not needed as confirmed by other dentists. We have been going to Dr. Joe for the past 11 yrs. They do ask parents to stay in the waiting area, but they are not unreasonable. When one of my sons went for his first visit he was crying. They brought him to the back where I could hear them talking with him and showing him toys to distract him. When they attempted his cleaning he continued to cry. This is when they came out to the waiting area to ask me to join him. He continued to cry, but at least I able to attempt to console him. I appreciated that. Another time, my oldest son was playing a video game when Dr. Joe had blocked his view while working in his mouth. My son moved his head to look around him and Dr. Joe said, "Oh!! Hey!!! Sorry buddy! Let me get out of your way." My boys love that it's all about THEM when they go to Dr. Joe's. As for the whispering that someone mentioned in a previous review, I appreciate when my child's privacy is respected and not broadcasted to the entire waiting area. I find it very hard to believe that negative review below regarding Dr. Joe and staff. We started going to Dr. Joe when my boys were 2. Both of them LOVE going to Dr. Joe, they are now 8 & 6. We have had cleanings, x-rays, fillings and even multiple teeth removed by Dr. Joe without one tear. There was almost a tear..you know when?!?!??! When I tried to sit back during a filling with my son when he was 7. His breathing got labored and his body was stiff, he was panicking....becuase I WAS MAKING HIM NERVOUS. Dr. Joe asked me to please let go of his hand and he talked to my son to relax him and get him back into a good frame of mind. He was amazing. I backed my chair up and let them finish. I had no place back there, they know what they are doing and my kids LOVE them. I was insecure and scared...not my son. Now they go back, get 4 teeth pulled and come out with a goodie bag and a funny, but adorable smile. We get a smoothie and Dr. Joe follows up at least once each time. Fillings??? Dr. Joe was the first dentist that my son saw. Our first visit was great and we were excited to have found the practice. At our second visit we had a technician who did not work well with my son. He was having a nervous day and wasn't being an easy patient and the technician told him that if he didn't start behaving, he was going to be taken into "the dark room". I emailed Dr. Joe who was very apologetic and said that they would take this as a learning opportunity to make improvements with the staff. Our next visit after that was fine. That leads me to our final visit. My son was definitely having a bad day and was very afraid to be laid back in the chair. He didn't want to go back to the room and after about 5 min of him crying and yelling in the lobby, the technician said I could walk him back. He still wouldn't go so I picked him up to carry him. On our first visit to the practice, I was told by the staff that parents do not come back with the kids and I did understand that policy and the reasoning behind it. I know my son behaves better for our babysitter when I am not around the house because she is then in charge, so that is how I viewed Dr. Joe's policy. So I carried my son back and was expecting to leave the room once he calmed down and was settled. We were taken back to the room that is reserved for kids who are more difficult or have special needs, etc. My son was still losing it, so as I was attempting to get him into the chair, the technician began trying to yank him from me and things started to go south from there. I was trying to calm him down just a bit before I left and the tech started saying I needed to go. My son kept saying he needed to say something and she kept talking over him telling him to stop crying. I said to give me a minute but again she told me I needed to go. I began getting annoyed and said I wasn't leaving him like that and she said I could not stay in the room and had to go to the hallway. I walked out reluctantly but listened the whole time. Basically the tech was firmly demanding that he stop crying, telling him he was making things worse. When he would cry for me she said, "I want my mommy too but you don't see me crying!" My frustration level was building but I just wanted to get through the appointment. Then Dr. Joe came by and we discussed Parker. He was surprised by the behavior because Parker usually does well. I explained that Parker had been saying he was afraid of the chair moving and being laid back and Dr. Joe asked if he had recently had a strep test. I replied. Parker had a strep test sometime in the last few months but I didn't believe that to be the issue. Dr. Joe went in the room and started telling Parker over his cries that nothing was going down his throat and Parker continued to cry about the chair and yell for me. Flash forward to getting x-rays done. There had been some quiet moments when Parker did calm down, so I had gone back to the front. I was up there for no more than 5 minutes when I started to hear Parker screaming again. I walked up to the room to listen and heard Dr. Joe saying that they could do things the easy way, or the uncomfortable way. Dr. Joe calls this presenting the children with choices and I call it using fearful language to intimidate. My son yelled that he hates the dentist and Dr. Joe scolded him and told him that that type of language was not acceptable in his office and asked him twice if he understood. After my son was done, Dr. Joe came out and told me to go back up front and not let my son see me and under no circumstances should I hug him or comfort him. My son came out with his bag of toys (obviously smiling since he'd been given gifts) but also with a splotchy face, dried tears and a sweaty head! Dr. Joe also offered him a ton of extra toys, obviously to send him away thinking the experience was great. When Parker was not around, Joe said to me that Parker's behavior had wasted an hour even though we had only been there for 40 min. Joe replied with, well it felt like four hours. Overall, I feel like even though some families love this practice, my son and Dr. Joe were not a good fit and I could not recommend them. read more

Each time my daughters look forward to going and Dr. Joe and his staff treat us in such a professional manner. My son couldn't be happier with Dr. Joe! He chipped a tooth when he was only 14 months old and I was concerned about how scared he would be that young at his first dentist appointment. Like a PP, I thought it would be better to go back to the exam room with my son. I have been taking my son to dr joe since my son was 2 years old. He's now 16 and has never had a cavity thanks to Dr Joe and his attention to detail and preventive checkups. I see the negative review of this parent for having Dr Joe attempt to bond with the child at a young age and it truly puzzles me. Parents are so overtly hypersensitive that kids today have no social skills or ability to create any comfort zones for themselves in even the most simple situations. My son went through the same process with Dr Joe and his staff and it was a very necessary step in order to create trust between my son and Dr Joe and his staff. This is normal and helicopter parenting doesn't work in every situation especially when a doctor or dentist is trying to do his job. I wonder what that mom is like when her child is getting a haircut? Does she tell the hair stylist how to cut it or take the a scissors away from him and do it herself because she knows better? Leave it to north shore parents to spoil the other 18 positive reviews which are not even showing up any more. We've been going to Dr. Joe for 10 years! I remember the very first appointment, I was more nervous than my son (who was only 1). He got more upset when it was time to leave. The staff at Dr. Joe's are always super friendly and very thorough. Today we were there for a cleaning and check up, it was a kind of a sad day for me to hear that all of my sons baby teeth had fallen out. We really thought he had one more to go. Lake Forest Pediatric Dentistry is a very negative place to bring your child. YOU are not able to stay with your child. They bring the children back even if they are scared and upset. Then they get into your childs face and tell them to calm down, if they want to see their mom or dad. My three kids have been patients of Dr. Joe for 12 yrs. I have a 15 yr old, 3 yr old and 5 yr old. I could not think of a better place for my kids to go for dentist appointment. Over the years I have understand the work that Dr. Joe and his staff do, they go over every single patient every morning to know our kids needs. My two older kids were so easy and they enjoyed every visit, but my third one did not want to know anything about it, he is a very strong will kiddo! I received the knowledge about how it would be handle and I gave Dr. Joe and specially his staff an opportunity to treat my third child and it did work like magic as soon as I separated my child from my side and let the staff handle and have them play and introduced them selves to him, he was so comfortable I mean like magic he has been wonderful ever since and I do exactly on every doctors visit and it just works. The knowledge that Dr. Joe has regarding psychologically and dental needs for a child he is a master. I cannot thank enough for all this years in his practice and for all the nice staff he has. Keep in mind they are always energetic to play with the kids and help them out. Now regarding dental his team is just unbelievable the training and the way they handle the kids!!! Unfortunately that day I was in the office and heard everything that happened and I don't recall any of this conversation with Dr. Joe, he will never asked to leave a child with total strangers this is why he wants us as parents to let the staff handle the situation and let our kids to know them. As soon as we show trust to our children in the doctors and the staff they feel a lot better instead of hugging them and telling them "it would be OK" when that means "something bad is going to happen". Most of the times we do make our children nervous about things when they are not. My 5 year old has a chronic decease and he has been hospitalized many times and had a lot going on, and because of what Dr. Joe has shown me during all this years I have been a better parent and he have tough our children to become good patients. I think Dr. Joe went to school to become a PEDIATRIC DENTIST and they have to have a very special training to work with the kids and All i have to say is he is the best in the suburbs. I am a local resident of Lake Forest and have been taking both of my children to Dr. Joe for years. I am also a Head and Neck surgeon with extensive experience with pediatric patients. I could not disagree more with the prior review. Dr. Joe and his staff are wonderful! The kids are well distracted and love to go for a visit. In regards to the policy of "no parents" in the treatment area-that is within reason. For routine treatment it is preferred by far to have the parents out of the way. Parents can inadvertently project their own fear onto a situation as well as give misinformation to their child and make the situation more difficult. They can also physically just get in the way. Years ago, my then 2 year old chipped his front tooth on the driveway after slipping on the ice. He needed the sharp edge filed down with a dental drill. He was in pain and terrified. Dr. Joe requested that I come with him into the treatment room after briefly assessing him in the waiting room. He is a reasonable man and an excellent dentist. He makes thoughtful decisions and careful judgement calls. I could not be more impressed with his professionalism and competence. read more

We went to Dr. Gordons office in a serious emergency situation after my son had a traumatic tooth injury during school . Dr. Gordon was referred by my pediatrician and allowed us to rush to his office immediately following the accident despite having other appointments. His staff was incredibly calming and helpful as I was in a state of panic. Their child-friendly office is very well laid out to help their patients feel comfortable and they accommodated both my son and his brother in a really kind and wonderful way. Dr. Gordon was very professional and repaired both my sons front teeth while he and his staff kept him calm. They never asked me to not be near my son, they just suggested that I try my best to keep calm and sit to the side so he would be calm.They did an amazing job repairing his teeth and caring for him- and an equally amazing job helping me get through it.
