With COVID having ruined every other typical summer event that our family enjoys; Six Flags Great…read moreAmerica, our local water park, Brookfield Zoo, Chicago beaches and trips to Disney, we still weren't exactly 'thrilled' when the plans were made to spend five days "up north" in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I mean, what is there to do there in the woods, staying in a real log cabin, with spotty at best wireless coverage and no mall in sight? Well, my sister and I were shocked and pleasantly surprised to find out that staying at The Bear Track Cabins in Ironwood, MI there is A LOT to do and we can not wait to GO BACK!
I'm not sure if it was all the scenery, the beauty of nature we experienced, and the many activities that we had never enjoyed before, or if it was the genuineness of Mr. Norm, the proprietor of The Bear Track Cabins, and the way he helped us to see all that the woods, streams, waterfalls, lake and wildlife had to offer my sister, family and me. Let me tell you, the thought of staying in a real log cabin freaked me out ... but the three cabins that Mr. Norm (we started calling him Norm of the North by the second day!) has there and rents, we took the smallest and it served our needs perfectly, are just as genuine, authentic, clean and inviting as Mr. Norm is.
Yes! You CAN shower AND go totthat bathroom IN your own cabin!! And we had electricity too for drying our hair ... I think he called this "glorified camping", which for my sister and me - was AWSOME! Campfires at night making s'mores, nature trail hikes during the day, enjoying beautiful scenic views along at least three spectacular waterfalls - two right across the road from The Bear Track, and swimming in Lake Superior and then playing on the beach afterwards - there was SO much to do we were actually very sad when our five day adventure was up. We had heard about these glowing Yuper Rocks on the Internet, and with Mr. Norm's guidance, we went "hunting" for them on one starlit night and successfully found a small baggie full to take home - so remember to bring your black light too! We did take the Adventure Ride up Copper Peak, rode the elevator and then climbed the stairs all the way to the top - this is a MUST DO experience. I think we saw Canada from up there! The downtown of Ironwood was fun to walk around and the shops were so quaint, as were those in Bessemer - either is about 20-30 minutes away. But the crown jewel of our trip was staying AT the Bear Track with Mr. Norm as host. He even surprised us with a north woods treat on our last night knowing that my sister's birthday was the day after we were leaving. So much fun, so friendly, so knowledgeable about the area, and his dog Cinjin was a lovable, cuddly companion and made us not miss our pets back at home as much.
We will miss Cinjn, Norm of the North, and The Bear Track, but have told our dad that we DEFINETLY want to put that on our annual To-Do list instead of Great America or other places we have gone that turned out to be a disappointment - The Bear Track was the exact opposite ... and to 14 and 20 year old girls who live for Disney - this is the highest compliment The Bear Track and Mr. Norm can receive!
