You have to cruise for about 10 minutes until you get to clear waters and parts you can actually dive into the water. The water is beautiful out here! You can see right to the bottom. We found a sand bank and stopped there. I'm like 4'11 and I could stand in the water (reaching my neck) This lake has a passage into the sea, which we took! The water was way more rocky there so we didn't dive there. All in all, I hope to be back here. Beautiful little spot.

However, for a nice secure, safe anchorage or even to just anchor and party, Lake Sylvia is about as good as it gets. It was named Pelican Pond by the local Garden Club before becoming Pelican Lake. The developers used the lake as an attraction to draw residents before the town it was incorporated in 1953. Although beautiful to look at the lake also serves an important function. It protects the surrounding buildings from flooding during heavy rain by providing a place for the rain to drain away. Around Pelican Lake is a pleasant one mile loop, perfect for a walk, jog, or bike ride. The lake has a fountain in it. Along the path you will find benches and trees. I even found a Rainbow Eucalyptus tree which you don't usually find out of botanical gardens. There is a gazebo where you can watch the turtles bob their heads out of the water. I think people must feed them because they came swimming right over when they saw me. I also saw fish and birds like the common moorhen, ibis, and ducks. There used to be more wildlife but the chemicals added to the lake through the years to prevent algae blooms eventually reduced the animal and plant populations. Plans are being made to rehabilitate the ecosystem by removing invasive species and adding native plants and fish. They also want to add a shallow nesting area to attract birds. One small part of the walkway around the lake takes you to the sidewalk along Ocean Dr. but it goes back down to the lake. When you finish your walk you can cross the street to Kagan Park where there is some outdoor exercise equipment along with a basketball court and a playground. This is a very nice to exercise and take in the fresh air.

The South side of this Walk can serve as a path to get to Juno Beach Access JB-7 from the parking lot at Kagan Park; I definitely passed families carrying beach equipment. This Walk is interesting in part because the path is lined with engraved stones memorializing loved ones or saying something. Many are so worn that you can no longer read them. A couple that I did read were heartbreaking. On the West side of the Lake is a pavilion with a boardwalk going out to it over the Lake. The Lake has fountains. We could see many, many turtles and ducks from this pavilion. Parents beware: the built in benches have a ledge at the top of the seats which are the perfect height for a child to hoist themselves up onto and stand dangerously high up to the top of the barrier. The Western side of the Lake Trail gets larger and has a green area with trees, a bench and a little gazebo. I didn't go too much farther when I saw the road head up to the regular road.

The name Lake Okeechobee was first documented by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. Okeechobee…read moremeans "big water" in the Hitchiti Seminole Indian language. With a surface area of 730 square miles, it is the largest lake in the southeastern United States but relatively shallow at only 10 to 12 feet deep. The primary source of water for the lake is the Kissimmee River located just to the north of the lake. Before European settlers arrived, the lake was home to Native Americans including the Calusa and Seminole tribes. The late 19th century saw the arrival of European settlers who farmed and raised cattle which became an important industry in the region. The fertile land around Lake Okeechobee attracted many farmers for its agricultural potential. The Hurricane of 1928 caused the lake's dike to fail, resulting in catastrophic flooding and the loss of as many as 3,000 people who were in the area to pick crops. There are several mass burial sites of hurricane victims in the area. In the 1930's the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed the Herbert Hoover Dike to prevent future flooding disasters. The dike was completed in the 1960's and serves to protect the surrounding communities from lake overflow. The Okeechobee Waterway, a canal system connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, was completed in the mid-20th century. This waterway included the Caloosahatchee River and the St. Lucie Canal, providing a navigable route across the state of Florida. While the canal system facilitated the transportation of goods and contributed to the agricultural development of the region, it negatively impacted the health of Lake Okeechobee with agriculture runoff. Current efforts are focused on restoring the water quality and health of the lake while still meeting the agriculture needs of the surrounding farms. Lake Okeechobee is one of those Florida landmarks you have to experience at least once. Surrounding the lake is the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, a mostly paved 109 mile trail that sits on top of the Herbert Hoover Dike. Along the trail are parks with amenities like picnic areas and restrooms. The trail is ideal for bikers, bird watchers, and anyone who wants a scenic views of the lake. Some of my favorite stops around the lake are the John Stretch Memorial Park, Lakeside Ranch Stormwater Treatment Area, and the Lake Okeechobee North Pier. The lake is known for bass, crappie also known as speckled perch, and bluegill fishing and there are number of fishing camps and places that offer fishing and boating excursions on the lake. Charming small towns like Clewiston, Belle Glade, and Okeechobee also surround the lake and are places where you can see buildings and places of historical interest and grab a meal. One of my favorite Okeechobee festivals is the Speckled Perch festival which celebrates the fishing heritage of the area and where you can see an authentic cattle drive. Lake Okeechobee is a a great place to explore and experience the more natural side of Florida.

Kitching Creek Preserve is a 51 acre natural area managed by Martin County. They acquired this…read moreformer vegetation recycling facility in 2009 to help restore the Central Flow Way of Kitching Creek and the Loxahatchee River. An engineering firm helped the county develop a way to capture water from a nearby ditch, hold it on-site in a series of lakes and wetlands, and then slowly discharge the water back into Kitching Creek and flowing into the Loxahatchee River. The project involved constructing a 24-acre lake with 8-acres of shallow marsh and wetland habitat. The lake and its surrounding ponds are an excellent place to bird watch. Bald eagles, roseate spoonbills, tri-colored herons, and osprey have all been spotted here. You may also come across alligators, otters, song birds, raptors, herons, and egrets. Around the lake and ponds is a mile long loop trail on natural earth. As I made my way around the lake I could hear the splash of alligators as they left the bank for the water. It is nice to know they are more afraid of me than the other way around. I also saw a few birds like a great blue heron and a couple of egrets. This an easy and scenic hike that anyone can do. Martin County offers free guided hikes of this and their other natural areas on their website along with many other great events.

Henry moved to the area in the 1900's to manage the company land. Kendall Green Park is a greenway passive park. Greenways are green spaces that have been closed to motorized vehicles in order to provide people a safe place to travel and exercise. With no cars, they are typically a great place to engage in movement while enjoying the outdoors and nature. They are also an ideal place in urban areas to spot wildlife. Kendall Green Park is less crowded that the larger parks in the area with more amenities. The main draw to this park is the paved walkway that runs along the perimeter of a scenic lake that attracts wading birds, ducks, and iguanas. At the entrance to the park is a butterfly garden. The parks open space is ideal for picnics, relaxation, and outdoor exercise on the walking path which provides a nice setting for a stroll or jog.
