Drove 45 minutes from the Northland to enjoy the self-service kayak rentals at Lake Olathe. It did not disappoint! Downloading the Rent Fun app and renting the kayaks were super easy. $15/hr and comes with the kayak, paddle and life jacket. Only 2 of the 4 kayaks were available for rental, not sure why. The entry point to get into the kayak and cast off was amazing!! Super easy to get going, even by yourself. The lake has great wildlife to see and we paddled to the waterfall, which made a great 45min roundtrip. Highly recommend this lake and rentals. I wish more parks offered this amenity.

I think I fell in love with this huge park. Wished I could've had the kids swim at the Marina Beach park but the splash pad and the streaming falls are a great side. We took some beautiful pictures. People come here to walk their dogs, picnic, hike, boating, fishing and enjoy the amenities of the park. The Marina Beach has a nice sunset spot. They have a building called Eagles Landing that people can rent out. The kids enjoyed swimming in the stream. There is a small area near the splash pad that has sand for the kids to play in. The waterfalls are not a place for those to climb at due to the algae but taking pictures by the falls or sitting on the rocks to have your kodak moment is well worth it. I love that their are restrooms and that they are super clean. The park is monitored well. It wasn't so busy. The Olafe lake is a place to visit and great family fun!

This seems to be an unknown place to most people. Great lake for paddle boarding and kayaking. One side is "primitive " with a small boat ramp. The other has had a lot of money spent on it! Inflatable water park on the lake, (not sure what the admission fee is). An amphitheater, some sortve fancy big clubhouse bldg that I'm assuming can be rented, plenty of paved parking, walking paths etc. Lots of fishing happening. Just come see for yourself.

Before the sunset, a great opening for pictures from either direction at Lake Olathe Park

Officially one of my favorite spots for family portraits and senior pictures. I have been here a handful of times, and always like the park, but nothing stood out as an ideal photo moment. After some exploring, all that has changed. Great open trails and water that make for good family portraits, but there is a hidden gem in the park that is IDEAL golden hour picture time. Maybe the best in Kansas City, just because of this one spot. And to think, I was going to leave this off my list. 4 Stars because it's all about one spot, at one time of day. I am available for photography at this location. If you would like to schedule a session with me you can email me at shirkmedia.co@gmail.com You can also visit me on instagram at shirk_media

Disclaimer: Rating for trails/observation tower *only*…read more A good walk or hike in some wide open green spaces will do wonders for the soul. Sure, Kansas can be limited in some of its landscape offerings, but if you don't take advantage of what's right in front of you, then you might miss the beauty that is many of our area lakes & parks. Kill Creek Park is just that beauty. There are trails of various difficulty, but none that are so strenuous that you could not do them with more than moderate effort. You can hike around a forest, around a lake, or you could just hike out in the prairie. There are multiple trails, all of which are well-marked, and they blend together at certain spots. Mountain/trail bikers might share the space at times but I have always had pleasant sharers of the paths. The trails are well-maintained with openings here & there for power to run through and the overall elevation changes are minimal. We've done the 'Outer Hank' several times and the circuit takes less than two hours. Wear your hiking shoes as some of the trails can have tricky steps and keep your eyes open to see nature in front of you. The observation tower is 3+ levels offering different views, all of which open in any direction. There is even an elevator to the top that is in service for most of the year. I suggest an evening view to the west for an optimal Kansas sunset, many of which can't be replicated. If you want mountains or beach, then you won't find it here. But if you want the peaceful, pastoral open skies of the West, then Kill Creek offers you just a taste of nature can do.

The staff member was nice who greeted us. And we were actually the only people on the inside of the nature center, so we got to enjoy it in a peaceful environment. There were some field trip kids having event events outside. My grandson enjoyed exploring, but I was disappointed to see that quite a few of the displays were out of order. Also, I had to tell staff that there was a mouse in bird nature viewing area. A child had left a cracker, and apparently a mouse had gotten in was taking advantage of it! But then I went into the newer section with the displays and another mouse ran out and was running around the room towards my grandson. So I think they need to correct this issue before it gets too out of hand. The trails are great and the natural gardens are as well. They have some great programs for the community. I just think that some of the displays need to be fixed and taking care of the pest problem, I'm sure if they let the hawk in there he would handle it! lol

Great for walking with friends, family or the dog. But as far as playgrounds go, it was only so-so. It was certainly pretty unique, but not very big or entertaining for a toddler. Also, bonus points for a playground with ample shade. This didn't have that either.

We pulled into the parking lot and there were quite a few cars. We started walking towards the playground, which is right next to a covered picnic area. There were no children when we first arrived, the playground just had grown men hanging out. There were grown men hanging out under the picnic shelter, a few acted like they were on drugs. There were men playing cards, men sitting on benches that were facing the playground and just talking on their phone. Older teens, hanging out underneath climbing toys. We left within five minutes and we would've left sooner had our two year-old grandson, not spied some playground equipment towards the back section. As we were leaving and looking by the lake, there were a few people fishing, but then I noticed homeless people living around the lake. I would definitely never suggest bringing a child to this park. It was also unkept with trash around it. It's really a shame because the lake itself looks pretty and the playground probably was updated not too long ago and has Astroturf underneath, but the whole atmosphere makes it unsafe. As we were leaving another family brought a couple of children to the park, but that is all of the children we saw at the park in general.
