It is…read morepaved, and while on occasions it passes sports facilities or people's backyards, it is generally quite green. It is usually well-attended and I have not had any safety concerns; it certainly feels better than comparable areas on the other side of the river. There are plenty of bikers, but the trail is generally wide enough not to present any major issues of overcrowding. It's definitely a good way to get a taste of the environment without driving too far from the city.

There's a museum, house and grounds tour, natural trails, big fields for kids to run around in, and beautiful gardens to enjoy. The house tour was great and our guide was extremely knowledge. They did a fantastic job of striking a good line between not white washing history but also not painting all historical figures as purely evil people - that's a hard balance to achieve but they did it. The house is really a spectacular architectural achievement and you should absolutely do a tour if you come here. The library alone is worth the entry fee. There's also several original outbuildings which are even more unique since many of those are not preserved on other plantations. The nature trails and grounds are also great to just walk around in. Our kid had a great time running around, and we saw several birds of prey and even an owl!

A visitor center was open, though it was surrounded by what the park ranger called "garden spiders", which are not aggressive towards humans and whose bite, if provoked, is painful but not deadly. I've seen Australia-level spiders and lived to tell the tale, but these were definitely no joke; arachnophobes beware. The site includes a mansion, a cactus garden for some reason, and a variety of other buildings. Notably, the slave quarters housed extensive exhibitions. I'm not sure if this park was always so given the way history is treated in some parts of the south, but at least now it has a thorough historical take. I did not have time for the tour, but one can reasonably hope that whatever tour guide you get it will be worthwhile.

The elevation change and length make this course fun - hour and a half or so provided that you…read moredon't lose a disc and burn up time searching for it. The course starts out with no direction or signs, but after you get to the lakeside holes it becomes pretty obvious. Honestly though, unless you're extremely accurate on every shot, you can't play all 18 holes. There are a couple that run along side the lake, with baskets literally on peninsulas feet away from the water's edge. I've lost a couple here attempting to play these holes for the sake of completeness. There is a scuba diver that goes into the lake and retrieves these - if you manage to catch him he'll grab your disc for you if he can find it. He'll call your number if it is legibly written on the disc. I believe he also sells them - he's got loads organized by area code, apparently for a name-your-price type of arrangement. Nice guy.

The entire length of the course is placed in between a neighborhood road and Lake Olmstead. There is also a paved walking trail that follows the same path as the course. So, accuracy is a must, or else you WILL lose some discs in the drink, or to a car run-over, or hit someone. Care must be taken to watch for walker/runners using the trail. Given those concerns, this course is probably better suited for more seasoned players who know how to control their hyzer. The course features are Lake Olmstead (obviously), a good mix of distance drives, tree hazards, and some interesting elevation challenges. There is a restroom attached to a barbecue pit building, located about halfway through the first 9 holes. But it's not cleaned regularly so beware. There are also very few trash bins along the course, so dispose of any trash before hand. Holes 1 and 2 are on some kind of practice field, so they may actually be unavailable at certain times. I'm taking a lovely figure drawing class at the moment, with a wonderful teacher who gives individual feedback & a small group of serious artists (myself, a dabbler, not included). You climb up two flights of curving stairs & over broad-beamed rough-wood floors, and painted-over fireplaces, walls covered with (at the moment) children's art... its kind of worth a visit just to climb into the attic for an art class. Anyway... loving it and learning a bit about figure drawing in the process. $200 for 8 classes... not too bad.

I was a member here twenty years ago when I lived in Aiken and it was a great club to belong to,…read morebut not anymore. I could not believe how bad a shape the course was in. I'm talking from tee, through the fairways, and spotty greens with poa Anna sprigs all over every green. The layout is awesome but the course is terrible. I found out they haven't had a greens guy in four years and it shows. Traps are terrible, terrible grass conditions on the tee boxes and fairways. I hope they get it back but I won't be back until I hear they are back in the shape I knew of them when I was a member.

Great club! They organize and host the annual Head of the South, one of the largest regattas in the…read morenation. HOTS was well ran, with plenty of porter potties for both athletes and spectators. As for parking, I do recommend arriving early, since you may have to park far down on the grass. There was also a good amount of green space to set up a tent for our club and plenty of rowing and food vendors to browse and purchase from. A cool fact, the Savannah River they row on is Georgia on one side, where the club is located, and South Carolina on the opposite bank.

I went to check out this place with minimal rowing experience (aka Boy Scout camp and what I've…read moreseen on television). I was ready to be intimidated, but thankfully the exact opposite happened. It is off 5th Street, but you have to go back a little ways to get to the actual location. The building is deceiving in size, as you will find out soon enough. In the bottom are where the different sized row boats are stored. As a member, this is where you get to store your boat and oars. Then there is a gym and row machine. The gym area looks out over Savannah River, which is a beautiful view. The row machine is great for teaching one how to learn to row in sync (I soon learned I needed more practice in that area). You have a second floor where there is a dining area (available for rental by Club members) looking over the river and a balcony. The point person walked me through not only the location, but the overall experience rowing. It was also interesting to learn that the 1996 US Olympic Row Team trained here. My lack of knowledge in this area was not held against me and I hope to join in the new year. *Insider's Tip -If you are new to the world of rowing, go to a intro day. They do them once or twice a year and it is a great first step into this. -Also, once you pass a certain level of training you can come on your own whenever you want. That's any day and any time. I like that.
