This is what TJs in Minocqua (Many years ago) USED TO BE! A great no-nonsense butcher shop with real BUTCHERS-- each with an opinion or recommendation on their personal favorites, a recipe, or a go-to preparation. These are real guys working in a real butcher shop, with meats expertly curated and dressed. The other night I picked up 4 enormous pork chops, a 4lb meat roll, 2 prime NY strips, a pound of bacon and 6 meat sticks (3 packer sticks, 3 beef)-- meat sticks are always for the ride home. The chops were amazing! Cook them to 150F, pull them off, rest for 5 min, and they're so tender, they'll remind you of a juicy NY strip. They're more than 'pretty damn good' -- they're amazing! And, the next morning, you will find yourself oozing with "toxic masculinity" ready to fry up a pound of the most amazing bacon you've ever had! :D I could go on forever about LTMM. My one request for LTMM is: don't EVER change a thing!!! Don't try to be something you ain't. Keep it simple. Keep it old school. Keep it a a destination and experience! (Rather than a place to buy a good steak, a candle, some cranberry chutney, and a loon lawn ornament! That combination doesn't frickin' work!!! EVER!) My recommendation for YOU: take a drive slightly out of your way and hit up Lake Tomahawk Meat Market. It's an experience! Bring your kids, too. As soon as you walk in the delicious smell hits you.. you know it's gonna be good. We always try and stop in if we are in the area. AMAZING meats. We have tried many of the steaks (they're huge and super flavorful), a ton of the meat sticks (beef and chicken), and the jerky as well. They have a great selection of frozen items and dairy items in the cooler. Quite a few selections of cheese. Homemade turnovers are delicious if you're early enough. The bacon is the best bacon you will ever have- I promise you that. Every time we stop in everyone is very friendly and we receive prompt service. Best meat market we've been to! I DO NOT recommend this place. Customer service is terrible. Staff was extremely rude. Went in to get my first deer processed and they treated me like I was stupid for not knowing everything they were asking. I questioned them about pricing a couple times and each time they dodged the question. They did not even see my deer or weigh it and we're going to charge me for it and would not explain how the pricing worked but instead got very angry with us. Absolutely terribly and rude people to treat someone like that. I took my business to TJs butcher block in Minocqua who were very kind and answered all of my questions. read more

So this original review I posted was quite a while ago... thought I would update with some fresh info. We stopped in middle of June 2018 to stock up on our favorite beef sticks and jerky during a road trip from Il. Everybody there was helpful and friendly. Atmosphere was a bit lighter conversation was a bit heavier and the selection is always great. I highly recommend them we have never been disappointed in the meats and it also seems like the atmosphere in there has lightened considerably. From meats and cheese to the most impressive brat selection around you are sure to be impressed! A welcome and family feel to a market that is always on top of its game! read more

This place is the real deal. I had the best ribeyes from here, super marbled and full of beef flavor. Their smoked bacon is excellent - great ratio of meat to fat. It's cut thick, and doesn't shrink when cooked. It's just on the ride side of smoke and salt also. Landjaegers have great flavor, not greasy at all. Great crisp on the outside of them, but the meat inside is tender. If I could, I would buy all my smoked meats from here. read more

Had my 10 point buck processed there November 2021 and requested the cape back for mounting. The butcher who took my order forgot to write "cape" on the order sheet, but he did write it and highlight it in pink on the 2 small tags that I gave to the young men doing the actual butchering along with the deer. I got a call 5 days later (very quick) informing me that my venison was ready. When picking up the venison, I asked for the cape back and was told by the butcher who initially took my order 5 days earlier that I did not ask for a cape with the initial order. I asked that he please go back where they keep the capes and check again. A few minutes later a different man- presumably the owner- came out very agitated with me and accused me of accusing him/his employees of stealing a 10 point buck cape even though I never remotely said anything of the sort. He said he has done this for over 40 years and I had no f***ing cape because it was not written on the order sheet he showed me. I could hardly believe his reaction to me asking his employee to simply check for my deer cape. I calmly kept asking him to go back and please check again because I knew I might not otherwise get back the deer cape of a lifetime. I kept telling him about the 2 tags with the deer cape highlighted in pink, I could show him a picture of the deer, etc. So he went back to check and a few minutes later a different man came out with my cape and reminded me that I had to pay for the cape. When I went back inside the apparent owner was joking with me like I was his buddy and it was no big deal. They were blaming each other in a joking manner. I paid for the cape and left. Never got an apology. Very disappointed. I have taken my deer there to be butchered for the past 25 years but I will never go back. Beware to all, the apparent owner considers his employees and himself infallible to the point that he will curse at a customer if you 2nd guess him or his employees. With only 1 other butcher in town, he must figure he has a captive audience, so why not. Worst possible way to treat a customer. read more

The prices are fair and the quality is great, it's not entirely convenient to my location but I still try to buy brats here whenever possible because you know they'll be fresh, have some unique combinations, and taste great. Beautiful steaks, delicious beef sticks, and HUGE, greasy dog bones for $5 (in Madison a bone of this quality would be at least $10.) They also sell pig's ears for your 4 legged canine companions. Aside from copious amounts of meat, the meat market also sells wonderful Wisconsin cheeses and assorted condiments. The only downside is that they don't accept credit cards (understandable for a small town butcher). There is an ATM inside the store if you're in a bind. The Lake Tom. Price ranging from $18.99/lb to $24.99. Myself and my friend Jodi were treated as if we (2 women) had no business being in a butcher shop. Wished we would have walked out. When we asked for a 2" filet cut to order the response " are you sure that's what you want? When our order was complete to the tune of $89.00 for four steaks. We were told " cash, check or FOOD STAMPS only!!!!! Really food stamps? Something seems shady!!! We have a home on Lake Tom, and stop in at The Meat Market often. The meats are spectacular and while I do like to give business to the small business I gave this place a 3 star due to poor customer service, and believe me this is not the first time I was treated as if I was bothering them. Stopped in to get quite a bit of meat, and the older gentlemen "helping" me was less than pleasant. I was there an hour after they opened, so it wasn't a situation where they had been so busy that they were overwhelmed ( never a good excuse anyway) but I will purchase my meat products elsewhere from now, I should not walk into a business and feel as if I am a problem because I have questions or actually just want to buy their products. Also, they do not take credit cards, and they're NOT friendly about telling you that. Many other options out there, and I have no idea who owns this place, but they should be aware that people are talking about how unfriendly the staff is and if you want your business to succeed this needs to be addressed. read more

I can not speak about their retail store. However I can comment on their wild game processing. Always heard great things so felt confident getting a nice buck I harvested during the Wisconsin bow season. This will be the last deer they process for me. The ground packages were covered with frozen blood. Every package of streaks and chops has had numerous hairs. This was the most I ever paid to a deer processed and the results are the worst I have every seen in 20 years if hunting. read more
