Great place, getting better. Our group has a great time there. New owners are putting in a lot of effort!

HVCC is a fantastic country club, particularly if you are a golfer. The course is a tough par-70,…read morebut not penal. The course was designed by Donald Ross and was built in 1926. It is a beautiful walking course and when I'm playing by myself, I can typically play 9 holes in about 1:40. The golf course is really the difference-maker for Hope Valley, as it stands up very well to any course in NC. There was a PGA tour event here in the 1940s, so you know that the layout is strong. Hope Valley is a private club with an initiation fee. There are three levels of membership - SOCIAL (which allows you to use the pool, the restaurants and play golf 6 times a year - for a fee); TENNIS (which is social plus free access to the 7 clay and 2 hard tennis courts; GOLF (all the golf, tennis, pool, etc that you want) - and if you walk, there is no incremental charge for golf. I would say that the average monthly charge for family golf is $500, so you really have to like to play golf. If you play tennis, there are a lot of leagues and weekly events - like men's night, where the pro splits everybody up into even matches. After 2 hours of play, folks hang out and drink beer in the moonlight. It makes for a fun evening.

The staff is extremely attentive and work very hard to keep the day flowing seamlessly. Kirby, one of the staff members, is simply superb. He remembers me from previous events and even had my drink order memorized. He is personable and truly works to keep the clientele happy. He served us all with a smile despite the fact that he had his college calculus final the next day. You honestly would not know if he was under any stress or pressure. Kirby is an absolute gem giving a great customer service experience.

Our server, Claira, checked our IDs when we ordered food and drinks - which is fine - but after we had already been waiting about 20mins a manager named Jackson came over and asked to check our IDs once again. He proceeded to bend them and closely inspect them over and over before walking away without saying a single word! He came back shortly after and said we could not be served because 2 of the IDs seemed "fake". For context, we are all well over 21. I'm 25, and my cousin is 24. There was no real explanation given beyond his personal judgment. We even suggested scanning the IDs to verify them, but they don't have a system in place to actually authenticate identification. So essentially, the decision was based purely on assumption. To clarify, we didn't see them go to anyone else's table to do this. Mind you, we are people of color who were just trying to have a good time. We had to leave only 40mins into the game, ruining our nights and they did nothing to make things right. We came here expecting to enjoy time with family and instead left feeling uncomfortable, profiled, and disrespected. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Only to receive a text back saying, the board banned me from the property for 2yrs because I mentioned bringing a gun onto the property. To show you how "blacks" are viewed, I never said no such thing and no one ever asked for my truth. Instead, automatic ban. I've been complaining since new management took over how the people being allowed on the course are not following course rules, and how disrespectful the seem to be towards myself and my golfing buddies that are also members. I said to HER, "it has gotten so bad (the disrespect) that I feel like I have to play a round a golf with my gun in my bag, and that I didn't want to be part of an organization that'll how me feeling this way. I am from the north, and have heard much about southern hospitality. It seemed like it was true until this interaction because everyone we interacted with before him was nice. We were on the 10th hole when we spotted the guy on the course. He was behind us moving very quick as a single. We had finished teeing off on 11 when he finished 10. As we were playing 11, I looked back to see him posing on the tee box like Gandalf the great from The lord of the rings. Then on 11, he hit his drive before I had hit my second shot. He is an older man so he didn't come close, but I would say 40 yards away. This was, obviously, something I was kind of upset about, however I didn't say anything until we got to the 12th tee where I asked if he wanted to play through, but also asked about the shot he hit into us. I believe my words were "Man you almost hit us there (jokingly with a fake laugh)" and he was pissed. He shook my hand aggressively and asked for my name before we asked him and he introduced himself as a member of the board of directors. When he shook my friend's hand, my friend asked him for his name, and he stepped into my friend as if to intimidate us before introducing himself. Then proceeded to aggressively inform us on how rude it was to not let him pass on 10. He also "discreetly" mentioned how he could easily get us kicked off the course. He seemed like he was in a bad mood, and was taking it out on us. The interaction totally killed my golf mojo. Since he is a member of the board of directors, I feel as thought I can totally be mad at the institution and not him specifically. He should be held responsible for the club if he is on the board of directors. Other than that it was a great course, and I thought the course was well designed. I really like the 18th hole. We complained to the pro shop, however they said "there is nothing we can do". To be honest, I didn't want a refund (although that would have been nice). I wanted him to be held responsible. it was very disappointing for such a great course.
