We hail from New England. Here for Independence Day, week. Wanted to find a nice public/municipal course and Hillandale popped up, just NW of downtown and North of Duke U. Made a reservation online, not binding and gives your prices/time receipt sent to email. Has a driving range to warm up your swing beforehand. Beautiful course, beautiful layout, extremely welcoming people. Lots of space down here to play, nice open course and great design. Only played 9; we're not used to the heat down here either (95°) but nonetheless, thank you for having us. In addition, clubhouse is nice, has A/C, and a place to stop for lunch at the turn. One look at Hillandale's rating and slope and you'd think this was a pretty easy track. From tee to green it is pretty straightforward, but the greens are another matter: fast, undulating, and mounded, they can be extremely challenging. This is no dirt track. I see others complaining about the staff, but I have nothing but pleasant experiences with them every time I play (I've played there a half-dozen times in the last three months). I've also shopped for clubs at their pro shop and that, too, was a good experience. I stopped playing here years ago because the pace of play was poor, but that hasn't been an issue since I returned this year. I don't know how they've sped up play--it's not like they have an army of rangers policing slow play--but so far I haven't experienced this previously persistent problem. This is hardly the best track in the area, but it's a serviceable course and very reasonably priced. You likely won't find better at this price point; Occoneechee, perhaps, is comparable. read more

The course is fine but the staff is very standoffish. Groups are constantly paired even on slow days and the ranger will follow you around while you play. Not a very inviting experience but yes it is indeed a golf course. I would recommend heading up to The Challenge before coming back. read more

The pro shop was great, the driving range was cool, had lots of targets. The course itself was ok, you could tell it gets a lot of play. Like most public courses the pace of play was very slow. But definitely would play it again.. read more

Employees made us feel like an incovenience. I've never been treated so disrespectfully by golf course employees. Hillandale Golf Course, you must re-evaluate the people you have working for you. We were hastled by the starter because we only had one set of clubs on the cart. He wouldn't let us tee off with one set of clubs so we had no choice but to rent clubs we weren't even going to use. The starters reason for having a second set is for pace of play purposes. After renting the clubs, (which took 15 minutes) we get back to the starter and he says "I'm suprised you boys came back after all that" which came off very disrespectful. He then tells us we are 15 minutes late to our tee time and now has to place us with the single walker. The only reason we were late is because he made us go rent the clubs so yeah I guess we are late! If the whole point of having a second set of clubs is for pace of play purposes, why would he immediately place two guys in a cart with someone walking?? It's simply comical. Doesn't make any sense. During the entire conversation, he spoke to us in a very condesending tone. Fast forward... We get to hole 8 and a car comes up to us and tells us that this is going to be our last hole because everyone has to be off the course by 7. The whole round was severely backed up, we were waitng on every tee box. I told the woman that and she laughed and said "That doesn't matter, it's policy that you be off the course now for yours and our safety." (whatever that means) And at that, she immediately accelerated off and left us speechless. Not only did we not get to finish our round, but we were forced to pay to rent clubs we weren't even going to use. I'm a paying customer and felt like an incredible incovenice to the employees of Hillandale Golf Course. I will never be golfing there again. We expressed our dissatisfaction with the way we were treated once we got back to the club house and they offered no resolutions. This course will never see my hard earned cash ever again and I'll make sure none of my peers do either. read more

My favorite place to golf, period. The staff is friendly, wonderful and professional. Fran, in particular, is the reason I joined the Women's League and have a great time on Wednesday nights. It's easy to get a tee time, it's inexpensive to play, the course is in fantastic shape and it's got that "Durham" feel. The pro shop is stocked with anything you could possibly need as a beginner or pro. The bottom line: they make you feel like a regular the first time you walk in the door. Give it a go! read more

I can't say more positive things about hillandale. Hillandale is home. This is a great place for many reasons. The staff is amazing. Karl, Justin, Joe, Fran, Tommy, Barry. They are all awesome, always professional and willing to help. The pro shop is a great place to hang out, with an extensive collection of things to buy and a snack shack that makes good food, couches to hang out and watch golf channel or to sit and have a beer, free wifi!Driving range and putting green. This place has it all and it feels like home. No need to worry about people being snooty, people here are friendly. The course itself is pretty good. Well maintained and constantly changing things to keep it interesting. Whether you're playing 18 holes or coming to practice or to even just hang out and maybe make a few purchases, it's always a good time because the staff and facilities are amazing. read more

Played for the first time today. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. They delivered refreshments to us on the 11th hole upon request! Great value for the money and the marshal was active on the course monitoring pace of play. Some quality shots required. read more

I am visiting from Chicago. The people in the clubhouse were very friendly. We were able to rent clubs for $15. Nine holes with a cart was $27. The greens were dry, a little brown, but not fast. A lot of dry grass on top of the turf. Easy to lose balls. Overall a pleasant experience. I would come again. read more

Price-wise you can't really beat Hillandale. I've paid much more in CA and gotten way less, so I'm very happy with the value. CONDITION: Most of the time the course is in pretty good condition. Sometimes (especially after a rainy week), the greens are horrible though. Looks like most people don't fix their ball marks so the green looks like a leopard. Otherwise, not bad. PLAYABILITY: This course is a huge confidence booster. Its pretty wide open. There will usually be some danger on one side of the hole, but its easy to avoid because the other side is empty. Also, it plays relatively short (6,339 from the blues). So there are alot of chances to score. OVERALL: Its a great place to scratch that itch to play. You get what you pay for so don't expect a championship course. read more

Hillandale is a fun course located in the heart of Durham. Inexpensive tee times with a driving range, full service pro shop, and club fittings. The greens are some of the best in the area, beating other courses that charge double. The course crisscrosses the Ellerbe Creek which creates some challenging shots along with keeping the course in a tight footprint. The tight footprint makes Hillandale a great course to walk. And if you get hungry, The Grill serves up sandwiches, beer, and awesome tacos! read more

What a great course! Not only is this an awesome course to play but these guys also provide an awesome community service that seems largely unknown. They have a club called the Hillandale HEARTS (Hillandale Embraces A Really Tough Situation) for children who are undergoing treatment at Duke for Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant. The kids are able to come out to the course and ride the golf carts whenever they want as well as play the course with their very own set of size appropriate clubs that they get to keep! all for free! I don't play golf but stopped by just to look and use the restroom. The staff was unbelievabley awesome very nice friendly and helpful. The place was busy with golfers too. From what I've seen it seems a great place to play a round or two of golf. Everything was in order and very neat. The restroom was clean and well stocked. They even have a place to grab something to eat. This place makes me want to play a round of golf. Stop by sometime if you're in town or live close by I know you will be happy with this course. read more

Great casual course with a driving range.

Best value in the greater Durham area! They just opened their new greens and they are AWESOME! Not a long course but far from easy, great range & practice green, and really great staff; professional, kind, and courteous the way golf professionals are supposed to be. The director of golf even played on the PGA Tour for a while! A Donald Ross design for $30-$40 w cart and play great greens at a good pace, I'll be back ...a LOT!! I'm a 2 handicap who is new to the area and find it a fun test that's rewarding if you play well, but to me there's nothing better than putting great greens and these new greens are by far the best I've played for under $75 a round in the area. We made a tee time for 2 for 9 holes. They matched us up with another couple that plays there all that time which was great since we were in town (Raleigh) visiting. The course was well maintained; had water hazards; and was fun to play. It was a great price for the value. I would recommend to others visiting or in town. after almost 6 months of my son and I going out on the first available tee time every sunday, they now tell us that we can't do single tee times anymore thus not allowing my five year old to enjoy golfing wth me anymore. way over priced for what it is. will never go there again.
