18th Tee

Decent course, limited services/food in clubhouse. Most staff are helpful

The course on a cold March weekday. The grass is dry (but to be expected this time of year).

HVCC is a fantastic country club, particularly if you are a golfer. The course is a tough par-70,…read morebut not penal. The course was designed by Donald Ross and was built in 1926. It is a beautiful walking course and when I'm playing by myself, I can typically play 9 holes in about 1:40. The golf course is really the difference-maker for Hope Valley, as it stands up very well to any course in NC. There was a PGA tour event here in the 1940s, so you know that the layout is strong. Hope Valley is a private club with an initiation fee. There are three levels of membership - SOCIAL (which allows you to use the pool, the restaurants and play golf 6 times a year - for a fee); TENNIS (which is social plus free access to the 7 clay and 2 hard tennis courts; GOLF (all the golf, tennis, pool, etc that you want) - and if you walk, there is no incremental charge for golf. I would say that the average monthly charge for family golf is $500, so you really have to like to play golf. If you play tennis, there are a lot of leagues and weekly events - like men's night, where the pro splits everybody up into even matches. After 2 hours of play, folks hang out and drink beer in the moonlight. It makes for a fun evening.

Kirby, one of the staff members, is simply superb. He remembers me from previous events and even had my drink order memorized. He is personable and truly works to keep the clientele happy. He served us all with a smile despite the fact that he had his college calculus final the next day. You honestly would not know if he was under any stress or pressure. Kirby is an absolute gem giving a great customer service experience.

Let me make this clear: Twin Lakes is not a professional course, it doesn't have a driving range,…read moreand it only has 9 holes. But it deserves at least 4 stars because it's great for weekend players and beginners, and it only costs $15 for 9 holes. This is my favorite golf course for me and my buddies-- it's not pretentious, the guys behind the desk are great, and you can take your time on the course, which is nestled between a classic NC forest. I recommend this course if you are not trying to impress anybody with NC golf courses, but instead want a carefree, but still nice, day of golf.

Eddie H. nailed this review... but it was 7 years ago, so I wanted to provide an updated…read moreperspective (even if it's still quite similar to Eddie H.'s) This course is a gem, tucked a beautiful country drive away from Chapelboro. It is a mom-and-pop golf course, if you will, so be prepared for that - there is no range, no yardage markers signed near the tees (though those numbers are on the scorecard, so be sure to grab one of those). The course is relatively easy, and just 9 holes. You can walk or ride, and it's eminently affordable. The greens are well kempt, though it would be tough to say the same of the fairways/tee boxes. But again, it's a pretty well trafficked spot and you are certainly getting what you pay for. There are some tough par 3s, a couple of par 5s (though only one if you play from the tips), and many par 4s that present challenging tee shots and approaches. The greens are surprisingly complex, and roll nice. The sand trap I ended up in... yikes. I'm no sand maven, but it was rock hard, basically. A couple of other notes: they do not sell beer at the course, so bring those if you plan on drinking (and there really isn't a gas station all that close from what I could tell, it's tucked away in a residential neighborhood). The first night I showed up, they were "closed for maintenance," because they were spraying the greens in the dead of summer. So call before you go out to make sure you'll be able to get on. Otherwise, man, this place is truly a gem. If you don't get too bent out of shape about course conditions, you'll have a blast, and I highly recommend Twin Lakes Golf Course.
