However, Amanda (at the front) was extremely nice and accommodating. She reimbursed us for the amenities we did not get to use and was so sweet and apologetic for the situation. More businesses should have customer service and employees like Amanda; it could have been a negative experience due to getting kicked out of the gym, however good customer service makes all of the difference. There was a teen room that had computers, air hockey table, pool table, video games, bean bag chairs. Was disappointed that the video games were not available due to not having staff for that area. The double basketball court was nice except all the balls were very warn and on the flat side. The indoor pools were nice and the locker rooms were clean. Remember to bring your own lock for the lockers. The workout room had a good variety of equipment. Plenty of washcloths available. I saw several different workout classes. Overall it is a very nice place for the family.

The front desk is often unmanned, and I have seen numerous teenage non-members enter and use the weight room without any of the staff being aware of their presence. But the worst aspect is that there is often no lifeguard on duty, particularly in the early morning. The management of this Y must start running this place in a more professional manner.

Walked in to look for a new gym, walked up to the front counter and was ignored for 4-5 minutes with a worker playing on her phone 2 feet away from us. A lady from the back had to come and get her attention. Never offered a tour, or what that had to offer, so we went and walked around looking for ourselves to see what they had. Glad that happened, we found a place that was very happy to add us as members. My personal experiences, some may love the place but your front line workers are an example of how management conducts themselves. Not for me. I need more than some weights, customer service goes a long way.

Popular destinations include Washington, DC; New York; Baltimore; Concord Mills, in Charlotte, N.C.; Nashville; Pigeon Forge; Las Vegas; Orlando, Fla.; and even Alaska and Mackinaw Island, Mich. The primary pick-up sites are at the Walmart in Bonsack, or the Quality inn in Lynchburg, but other options are available if the demand is great enough on a particular tour. Abbott's $99 New York red-eye trips are my personal addiction. You leave Roanoke or destinations en route in the middle of the night and arrive in New York City Saturday morning to spend the day doing whatever you want. The return trip happens during the night as well, so you're back home by Sunday morning and ready for work on Monday. I've been on a dozen of these and it never really gets old. Service is old-fashioned and prompt, the way it should be. There is never a shortage of snacks or friendly tour guides on the buses, and often, there are movies shown and games played on the bus to pass the time. Some tours are self-guided while others are hosted. I can't say enough good things about Abbott Trailways. I've been a loyal customer for years, with no plans to stop anytime soon.

Today was our second visit to Star City Music. Last year we purchased a used clarinet for my…read moredaughter (her old one was well loved for over 40+ years) and desperately needed a break. We have had 0 issues with it, it has had a successful marching and concert band season. Because our kid loves music (plays multiple instruments), we decided to purchase a used base clarinet too (this one by far was the most affordable option, we tried it before we bought it as well). She has played base clarinet for over 2 years now. She has used the schools, it was ok, but could probably use a bit of TLC itself. Star City Music by far had the best prices on instruments and reeds. I definitely recommend the trip--I'm told they can even deliver to local schools for reeds, repairs, etc. Both encounters have been knowledgeable and helpful.

A one-of-a-kind multi-resource community center in…read moreRoanoke, Virginia, designed to address the needs of the underserved Northwest Roanoke community by providing quality essential services in one location, and doing so with class. Clearly the architectural design of the building itself is a symbol of hope, of the famous phrase "Where there is a will, there is a way," put into action. Walking inside the Melrose Plaza building made me recall the Bible verse of Jeremiah 29:11 '"For I know the plans I have for you', declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."' Melrose Plaza opened its doors on July 2025, as a collaborative project led by Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, the City of Roanoke, and Carilion Clinic, with the goal of creating a new model for community revitalization by dealing with issues like food deserts, and lack of access to education, healthcare, and career and financial planning. For this purpose, I learned from the friendly and knowledgeable information center lady behind a circular counter inside the Plaza, that several unique and one-of-a-kind establishments located inside the Plaza were created. The Market on Melrose, the Plaza's flagship store, is a full-service grocery store, that gives access to affordable healthy food within reach of members of this community, and the first Goodwill-operated grocery store in the country. As I went inside to explore it, what impressed me the most was how clean and well organized everything was. The ambiance was that of a high-end, gourmet, health minded grocery store. It was full of nutritional, high quality, and affordable, fresh, healthy food, placed in a beautiful contemporary designed store with amazing use of colors and light treatments. Next to the Melrose Market is the Henrietta's Cafe where customers can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner in their dining open space, or grab something to go on the way to work or to take home on the way back. The Excel Center, (Virginia's first adult high school), also located in the Plaza, is a place where adults can go back to school and complete their high school diploma in a flexible, supportive environment. A high school diploma can help graduates obtain better job opportunities and with these, better income potential. The Melrose Branch of the Roanoke Public Library not only provides great reading resources, but also offer excellent programs, such as their Carrer Day, to assist individuals in finding the ideal career of their choice. Wellness on Melrose provides health and nutrition services to help you live healthier and happier lives. Together with their community partners, they provide workshops and counseling to help with stress management, nutrition planning, physical fitness, and overall wellness. The Bank of Botetourt branch in the Plaza offers banking and financial coaching for Financial Empowerment of the individual. After earning your money, you need to know ways to save it and invest it to make it grow to use for future goals. And last but not least, exhibits that help value and celebrate the History and Culture of the residents of the area. Starting with the Harrison Museum of African American Culture, with the purpose of cultivating awareness and appreciation of the significant contributions of people of African descent. And also including a History Wall honoring local Black leaders, and a public mural located inside in the Plaza, celebrating the area's heritage. I was totally impressed by this first-of-its-kind, transformational community center collaborative project, made possible by the united participation of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, the City of Roanoke, Carilion Clinic, and other community partners. It not only is an uplifting project for the Northwest Roanoke community but could also creates a new model for revitalizing communities across the country.
