I am Celiac and have to be careful about certain items and also the chance of cross-contamination. So prior to driving two and a half hours to dine at Stockport Mill Inn, we called to ask about the menu. We were assured that there were many options that would be gluten free. Reservations were made for noon which is when they open. We arrived a few minutes before noon and enjoyed observing the scenery and reading the historical markers on the property. At noon, the door was still locked. Finally one of the people in our party ventured around to the back and went in the back door (clearly marked "exit") and came to the front door and directed us to the back door for entry. Shortly after we were let in the back door, somebody (I think the owner) ambled over to the front door with a key and let the rest of the waiting guests inside. When we got to the restaurant area, a woman started talking (almost yelling) that the one table in the back and three tables on the side were reserved and we could sit anywhere but those tables. I said we had a reservation and told her the name and she just repeated what she had shouted out before. I asked if one of the reserved tables were ours and she shouted out the command again. So we went into the dining area and found an open table and seated ourselves. She eventually came and asked if we had been there before and we said we had not. She took our drink orders and told us it was buffet style and to go up to get our food. (Only it was not really buffet style; it was really cafeteria style as the servers dished up the plates for us which was fine.) We gave her our drink orders and I said that I am Celiac and wanted to make sure there were some gluten free options. She said, "Are you the ones that called?" To which we replied that we were and she said, "Okay she said, no bread, no potatoes, no pasta and no desserts." And that was it. She walked away. I was somewhat perplexed about the potato exclusion because I could see that they were serving mashed potatoes but perhaps they were instant and some of those do contain wheat. I took a glance at the options of main entrees and mentioned to my husband that I was not sure I could eat any of the options. Once we got to the serving line, that same woman was there dishing out salads. I requested no croutons and she just looked at me. Again I said, no croutons please. So she put a little salad on my plate. I asked for onions and she just froze. So I said, "Onions please" and so she put two tiny pieces of onion on my plate. I asked for a small dish of fruit as well. As I approached the main entree section, I saw that there was some chicken. Since chicken was not mentioned as an excluded food, I asked the second server if the chicken was breaded. She said, "I don't know." Then she asked the other server if the chicken was breaded and she practically shouted, "I said that she said, no bread, no potatoes, no pasta and no desserts!" At this point I was afraid to ask about any of the other options. I have been Celiac for so many years and I know what questions to ask, but since the server was so hateful I just decided to have a salad and nothing else. When we were all seated at our table, I began to eat my salad, trying to eat as slowly as I could so that it would last throughout everyone else's meal. One of the people at our table had finished his food and gone back for seconds. The hateful server came by and asked if she could clear those plates. I asked for a second glass of tea. She did bring a second glass of tea and silently placed it on the table as she passed by to another table. I also drank all that tea and my empty glass remained on the table. The server came around a few minutes later with drinks for everyone at the table except me, did not take notice of the two empty glasses in front of me or offer to bring me another refill. Now, I have dined at countless establishments and I have had excellent service as well as poor service over the years and across the globe. So a rude server is not a new experience for me. The majority of our experiences are good, but I have also had my fair share of mediocre and poor service. I rarely complain. I try to understand that sometimes people just are not on their game; maybe there is something else going on that I am not aware of. I also understand that many people do not understand that Celiac is a disease, not just a fad diet. Asking for particular items is not my way of making their life miserable. It is just a fact of life that I cannot eat certain foods that contain gluten. So I try to factor that into how I rate my service. The breakfast buffet is top notch offering many selections including 2 hot choices such as scrambled eggs or sausage links & sausage gravy with biscuits. There's even mini Eggo pancakes & Belgian waffles, yogurt, cold or hot cereal. Also, bagels, choices of bread, muffins or pastries. There's 2 choices of juice & milk, coffee or tea. There is always coffee available in the lobby. There is always a staff member available at the front desk. This is the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in. It is professionally maintained with everything in working order, e.g. the ice machines & AC/heaters, fridge, & microwave in the rooms have always worked perfectly. I travel here to visit a friend & will sometimes just stay an extra night to unwind because it is so comfortable & pleasant here. There are also very nice areas to walk your dog! There's a little picnic area with a propane BBQ grill too! I just noticed this as I was leaving on my last visit. I know I'm writing a book here but I have to mention the staff, they are the most professional, hard working, friendly, & nice hotel employees I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. That is definetley the case with this location of IHG properties. This chain is consistenly solid over the years so I wasn't expecting anything less than what we had. They in the midst of a renovation, but around a bit of dust here, anda paint splash there, it was still clean (much cleaner than a previous place in Wilmington). The staffer that checked us in was pleasant and efficient. Our beds were comfortable, lots of pillows. We had a little problem with the shower the first night (operator error, or rather we didn't know the trick for a janky tub/shower valve). We called and they sent someone within about 5 minutes. [It was one of the maids that had experience with our room, a sweet soul, very pleasant...I do have to ask though, how many tattoos are too many tattoos]. The breakfast was pretty well put out, two hot protiens each day, eggs, potato options, oatmeal, cereal, pancake machine, etc. Even the most finicky kid would not walk away hungry unless they wanted to, for whatever reason it is that finicky kids do things. The hot tub worked, good temperature, pool was nice, neither had too much chlorine. While you didn't have to walk through the lobby (like some hotels- why designers, why?) there was a giant window from the front lobby/breakfast area to the pool area. My wife was a bit off put by that. I guess you would feel a bit like a fish in the aquarium if someone was there looking in. Definiteley a good stay, nothing is cheap anymore, so $346 for two nights in a non capitol city in Ohio might feel steep, but hey that's what the market will bear, so all good that's good. Jacuzzi isn't very hot but it's relaxing. Pool is perfect place to get some movement in before bed.
