After spending too much money, I was finally referred to Dr. Panitch. She did thorough and comprehensive testing; blood, stool, saliva and breath. She then was able to construct a diagnosis and treatment only using 2 antibiotics, diet and a wide range of supplements. She thinks outside of the typical corporate medicine view and values the importance of environment, lifestyle and nutrition in her approach. She is on top of the latest functional medicine research and values her patients' perspectives. The staff at her office have been extremely helpful. They always call to remind me of appointments a day in advance, and everything has been on time. There is street parking right out front (I've never had an issue finding a spot), and it's walking distance from most Lakeview neighborhoods. There is something fishy going on with Yelp's review filter for this clinic. Only negative reviews are showing and counting towards the rating while MANY positive reviews have been filtered. That doesn't seem balanced or right to me. I have seen Dr. Panitch for several months. She is not my PCP but an adjunctive doctor that I see due to her speciality in hormones. She was the first doctor (after asking 2 others and doing my own unsuccessful research) to give me some answers about getting off of a prescription drug that was causing me some concerning side effects. She was also the first to help me discover some food intolerances which were wreaking some serious havoc on my body. I'm still in process of figuring out some other issues but I understand that she is not a miracle-worker and this will take some time. Some of the supplements she recommends are expensive but they are from reputable supplement companies. I did run some of these past my PCP (who is also integrative) and she said that Dr. Panitch's supplement recommendations seemed appropriate. I simply could not afford to continue to take these supplements for a length of time so I ordered comparable supplements online. These were less costly but also seem to be of a lesser quality. Dr. Panitch did NOT seem annoyed by this fact when I told her. She spends time with her clients and is very thorough in her initial evaluation (I had to stay "after class" to finish the intimidating 10 page medical questionaire). This does cause her to run late for scheduled appointments. I don't mind this much because I feel like she gives me at least 3x as much time as any traditional Western doctor to ask questions, explain my issues in detail, and evaluate my symptoms. Plus I don't feel bad if I'm a few minutes late since she's usually with another patient when I arrive. Do not waste your time with Dr. Panich Dr. Panich came highly recommended, so I thought I'd give her a try. I came to her with a health issue that I was nervous and confused about. She told me she didn't know what the problem was and referred me to a gynecologist. But after performing a very quick self-exam, I was able to discover the problem for myself. I understand that she is not a gynecologist but she didn't examine me thoroughly enough. By the time I made it to my referral appointment (2.5 weeks), I could have had a life-threatening issue. Then there is the matter of how she handled my phone calls. I called four times and spoke to every person who works at the desk. Each time, they asked me what the problem was and I said I wanted to discuss it with the doctor. The staff had the opportunity to tell me that their policy is to not call patients back unless they know the reason for the call. Instead, they kept taking messages which were never returned. Meanwhile, I was stressed out about my health and symptoms. So much time was wasted going and back and forth when the issue could have been closed in three minutes by calling me back. It is unfair to expect me to know the policies of the office without being told. And when Dr. Panitch finally called back, she gave me an attitude and said she was PURPOSELY IGNORING MY CALLS. If she would like to call herself a professional, then she should act like one, and not ignore a patient just to make a point. I don't expect the royal treatment from a doctor's office, but I do expect courtesy and respect. From now on, I am going to the Chicago Women's Health Center. Dr. Panitch was not a good doctor to me and I can not recommend her to anyone who wants to be treated respectfully, Her bedside manner is zip. She could barely contain her irritation when she was speaking to me. She was dismissive and rude. I don't need to be friends with my doctor, but I don't want to be treated like a stupid dolt either. Her husband is also on the premises and demands the staff's unwavering attention. I was waiting for the assistant to copy some records for me, he marches in to bark at her that a lightbulb is out and she looks terrified. She leaves me standing there, and runs to change the lightbulb. I'm still standing there and the doctor walks by, and says to me, YOU'RE still here? And keeps walking. It is a miserable place. My experience with Dr. Panitch has been fabulous. While in Chicago, I was seeing her for 3 years and feel because of her thoroughness, she was able to give me a diagnosis missed by other doctors: Hashimoto Thyroiditis. While it is easy to get an appointment, it is true you may have to wait once in the office. But my experience has been that she will spend at least 20 if not 30 minutes with you if necessary to go over your issues. Extremely great bedside manner! Before I started seeing her, I felt generally bad and because of her I now feel great and have lost about 25 pounds. She insists on thorough testing and exploration so that she can pinpoint issues and help resolve them. It does take some time, but well worth it in the end if you treasure quality care. As for supplements, yes...she does prescribe supplements which I feel is much better than pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceuticals seem to be a last resort with her, which I appreciate. Also, I checked online and the supplements she sells are high quality and are only about $1 to $2 over list price (stocking fee I imagine). The one complaint I have is not directed toward Dr. Panitch herself, but her front desk staff. They are not altogether friendly and seem to have a hard time thinking out of the box. If it were not for Dr. Panitch's stellar care, I would have considered another doctor based solely on her front desk staff. Hence 4 stars in this review. As my new family doctor for just 6 months, Doctor Panitch has figured out my chronic illness ... something my previous, conventional doctor couldn't do in 12 years. I'll tell you how she did this: 1. She had me fill out multiple questionnaires with hundreds of questions over time as she narrowed down what my issues were. (My previous doc rarely asked me anything besides the usual, "Why are you here today?"). 2. She sent me to specialists right away for clinical exams. Then, spent much time reviewing those results with me and even sent me for follow up tests based on their findings (something my previous doctor rarely did and would just take the specialists' word for it.) 3. She looked at everything in my chart with a fine tooth comb basing her recommendations NOT on what is "normal" for everyone, but for me, specifically based on my answers to her questions. 4. She guided me in making changes to my diet and applying supplements. Then took more tests to assess my progress. 5. She applied her additional knowledge in specialized health to all her findings. I am now off of all pharmaceuticals which were causing unbearable side effects; and my actual underlying illness has been pinpointed. I am ready to start additional treatment but already feel better than I have in a long time. It did take some patience and cooperation on my part but I am getting well, FINALLY. With Dr. Panitch I have never paid more for supplements than I paid in co-pays for medications at the pharmacy. Some of the supplements she has prescribed are actually covered by my insurance company. If you are looking for a specially trained MD who wants to get to the bottom of your health issues and actually treat the cause of what is ailing you, not just the symptoms then go to Dr. Panitch. If you are someone who can't wrap your head around integrative medicine and the body as a natural system then go to a doctor who doesn't have extra training in this area. I have had a positive experience with Dr. Panitch's office so far. I've been seeing her for a few months. I have definitely spent some major money on tests and supplements, but I feel this has been a positive. I, like many who have seen her, have had chronic issues that she is helping to uncover. I really wanted to like this office but I've had too many issues here. In short, I've been better off waiting to see if I die or not than I have with receiving medical attention from Dr Panitch. There have been multiple times where I have waited over 30 minutes past my appointment time to see her. Her staff have called me twice to come in early because there was a cancellation and I ended up waiting past the time of my original appointment. Another time, after having to wait 40min with no status updates from her or her staff, I was told that I couldn't be seen because I didn't have my insurance card with me. I had the same insurance I'd always had and have been there before. They refused to call the insurance to verify that I in fact was insured. After having a fit for having waited so long to be told that I couldn't be seen, I was told that I'd have to pay a $200 deposit to be seen that day. I see there are positive reviews. Not sure why. I switched to this doctor because i had to due to insurance and she is located near my home. I could not be more unhappy. I consistently wait over 45 minutes to see her and when i do, she tries to sell me on nutritional "supplements" she sells in her office. I could write a novel, but I will just give you bullet points for easy reading.... -She sold me so many natural supplements (that are not regulated by the FDA) and they made me worse. I trusted her because she "is a doctor" and that was my bad. -She sold me EXPIRED supplements and would not let me return them. She argued with me. I didn't notice they were out of code until I opened them. The pills were over $100! That was the straw that broke the camels back! -I was having major sleep issues and she gave me a take home sleep test (that cost me over $300.00). When I went in to review the results she was very frustrated when I asked a question. She was bothered by my curiosity. If that is not bad enough she said things were wrong with me when they were not! Then proceeded to sell me another $150 + dollars worth of herbal supplements. -I took the results of the sleep test to my new doctor and he confirmed that I was normal on almost every single line item that she said I had imbalances on. What a waste of money and time! -One of the last times I was in her office her assistant came in on behalf of a patient that had a few questions regarding some follow up and she was severely annoyed by their questions. Poor bedside manner. -She failed to inform me that I have an irregular heartbeat (after I complained about experiencing the sensation of my heart jumping out of my chest while resting multiple times!!!!). One trip into my new PCP and he found it and gave me an EKG to confirm (lovely). -I spent over $1,000 total on trying to cure my sleep issues and anxiety and it took just 1-2 visits to my new doctor and he cured me. I started seeing Dr. Panitch a year and a half ago with issues stemming from an autoimmune condition. Endocrinologists didn't help me (in fact they were a total waste of time and money). And a naturopath I was seeing wasn't very thorough, I wasn't seeing any improvement in my symptoms (mainly debilitating fatigue and brain fog), and I was paying tons of money out of pocket...so I stopped seeing her. I then found Dr. Panitch who has been very thorough, does lots of testing, encourages my paleo diet to help with my autoimmune health, and accepts insurance. We've worked together to figure out what meds and supplements work for me, what other issues I had going on under the surface, and treatment for those issues and my autoimmune condition. She listens and is open to my ideas as well, which I really like. I finally feel better than I've felt in the last few years since my symptoms started. She's quick to prescribe all these test and supplements to generate kick backs for herself. She pressured me into taking a test that she claimed MULTIPLE TIMES was covered by insurance and WAS NOT! She was our doctor for several years without no problems until my husband started feeling sick, there is a family history of diabetes and Dr Panith started to treat him as a diabetic patient...he felt terrible one day at our son's pediatric doctor who inmediatly took a draw blood and determ an emergency situation: apendicitis, from a simple lab test. I received a call from the pedo Dr stating my husband emergency, I had to leave my job, pick my son and come back to take his car home. Sometimes alternative medicine is not everything. I have had fibromyalgia, Sjogrens syndrome and mixed connective tissue disease for 20 years. I would give no stars if I could. I had an issue and wanted to see a doctor - ANY DOCTOR - that day. Well, as fate has it I chose this one! Yay for me. Upon calling and asking if the doctor specialized in my specific illness, the lady answered "Ummm yes?" with such a "no shit" attitude. First sign that I should NOT have gone there. Upon arriving, I was 'greeted' by two women (who seem VERY rude at first but honestly are very nice people once you crack a joke or two... or once they find out you're Hispanic so they can't chat about you in Spanish hah). They're not the problem though - Pabitch is. Everything went fine as she recommended things for my treatment. Luckily I brought a natural cures information sheet with me too because she suddenly remembered that I needed something else. Really? I should have just read the sheet instead of wasting my money and time going with her. Anyways, she also recommended a food allergy blood test as well as a take-home kit. This is where my real problem comes. The blood test (from my understanding) was $179 TOTAL. No ifs, ands or buts about it. At first I was weary of spending $179 when I could have gotten it cheaper from somewhere else but alas I decided to just go ahead and do it. They charged me $35 dollars there then the rest would have been taken from the company. Right? Wrong. I was charged $35 dollars and then the company took $179 so I was charged $214 in total. Without missing a beat I called the office to see why the company charged me $179 if they were supposed to subtract $35? Well, this is when I found out that those two charges were completely separate! Wow, tell me now AFTER I get charged. What great business ethics! It does not stop there. After being told that I was the one who heard wrong and enough apathetic "sorry for the misunderstanding's" one could bare, I asked to speak personally with the doctor. The secretaries are not the problem, they're just in a bad mood because they have to work for Mrs. Frizzle (It's called Frizz-ease, girl). I think some of the bleach Pabitch uses seeped way past her hair follicles because something is messed up with how well she listens. After politely explaining what happened, she informed me of the reason that I came to her (because "I knew she was the best" No, because you were the only one with the most openings and now I know why), then bullshitted that her blood test is so wonderful and cannot be given anywhere else! It's so funny though how quickly she shutup after I informed her that I come from a big family of doctors but came to her because they live in Mexico. She then proceeded to generalize an ENTIRE COUNTRY stating how she doesn't know much of Mexico's medicine but she's sure they don't do her practice there. Mexico is known to practice more natural ways INCREDIBLY WELL due to being behind in medical advances in the past. I've received some of the BEST medical advice/treatment in Mexico. FAR BETTER than her disgusting ways. She also said that without insurance I would have paid $300-400 dollars. Wow!! Really?!!?! Thank you so much for that useless information because luckily I have insurance!!! I understand that she tried making $214 look better but she made herself look worse. Upon other things, she said that she could not release the information to me (IT'S MY BLOOD!!!!) and that I would HAVE TO see her again. Well, I called Genova (company where she sent the blood) and they said that it's ILLEGAL for her to withhold any information from me and she could simply mail me my results. They even apologized for her behavior! She knew damn well that I wouldn't have to see her but again, she was just trying to get my money. Because of the useless lies she told me, attitude she gave and her impressive way of beating around the bush, I would NEVER see her again. I cancelled my appointments with her and am sticking with my general doctor. I even tried softening the blow of cancelling by telling her I was just going to visit my family to be treated. Her response? "They won't do as well as I do." Not only has she offended me on a personal level, but her lack of professionalism makes me wonder how she's gotten this far. Oh and at the end of the conversation she said that she would like me to come in not only for the results but because she wants her take-home kit back. Well, she can simply use the $35 dollars she conned from me to buy a new one. If you would like to be given attitude, offended and left with no answers then look no further - this is the place for you!! You guys, I'm a VERY laid back person so the fact that I even wrote this should say something. Pabitch, I hope you're reading this. You are SO RIGHT that no one follows your practice - seriously! Because if they did, everyone would die instead of dealing with you. I would ask my family if they have any natural remedies for being so rude but since you're so good then please treat yourself. I've had the same experience with Dr. Panitch. She seems to diagnose everyone with wheat and dairy allergies, without even doing a basic exam. I went to her for my annual pap,etc., and she didn't even do a breast exam. Very rushed, very one-size-fits-all, not very helpful. She seemed to get irritated that I bought the supplements she prescribed at Whole Foods for 1/3 the price. read more
