Dr. Betman is truly exceptional. When I first started seeing her, she was also treating my coworker. We had both come in for asthma issues, but Dr. Betman immediately recognized that my coworker wasn't experiencing asthma complications at all -- she was actually having a heart attack. My coworker didn't believe it, but Dr. Betman guided her to the ER, where they confirmed it was a heart attack. My coworker told me this story, and we both agree: Dr. Betman is the kind of life-changing doctor you want in your corner for life. A few other things I appreciate: she takes many insurance plans, is a women's health expert, teaches at Northwestern University, and refers out to excellent specialists (who also work with a wide range of insurance). Unlike most doctors, she takes the time to answer every question and treats every concern seriously. Over the years she genuinely gets to know you and cares about you -- almost like the small-town doctor you'd see in a movie. The busy office staff is perfunctory... they're not going to win awards for being "nice," as other reviewers have mentioned. But if you need treatment for serious medical issues, they are extremely competent -- which, in the end, is what matters most. read more

Office staff unprofessional. Dr. Betman is an independent Physician which means she doesn't use MyChart. I had 1 appointment with her. Ended up sharing my phone and MyChart info with her. Awkward. She referred me to see a cardiologist and to get an echo stress test for a low heart rate. Results were in MyChart the following day and I have yet to hear a word from Dr. Betman. Very confused that people are complaining about the office staff. Receptionists have always been pleasant and the office manager is outstanding. I think it's commendable that she prioritizes her responsibilities based on patient need. Shouldn't that be her primary goal? Dr Betman is very busy and has many patients calling and writing in for assistance. Dr. Betman has lost her touch. I began seeing her more than 10 years ago, on recommendation from my therapist. Dr. Betman used to be the gold standard for PCP care for patients with eating disorders. Not sure what happened. I have continued to struggle with eating disorders, in addition to PCOS and hypothyroidism. I asked for a yearly check of my thyroid levels and she told me no because they don't change that often. After switching to a proper endocrinologist, less than a year after Dr. Betman last tested, I have proof this isn't true. Her negligence means I have been on an improper dose of medication for months. Additionally, as part of a conversation where she pushed me to lose weight, she suggested I "talk to someone" about my issues with food. I reminded her that I have, that the therapist I see referred me to her, and that I have had an eating disorder for decades. It was clear, based on her reaction when I said this, as well as other comments, that she didn't even bother to look at my chart/history before coming in. If you have an eating disorder, thyroid problem or PCOS, please, please find someone else. Otherwise you may be subject to Dr. Betman suggesting Weight Watchers because "they have so many freebie foods." read more

Dr. Betman was fine. She listened to what I had to say and was open to working through prescriptions/ solutions for my issues. Her office manager, however, is the absolute worst customer service representative I have ever encountered. She is not only rude in person, she also put in incorrect prescriptions for me and then when I continued to ask about preauthorization forms for insurance to lower the cost of my actual medications, she told me I was not a priorty and she would need to deal with patients who had more urgent health matters...it was a 2 page form she had to fill out online and it ended up taking her 3 weeks. I'm still waiting to get my prescriptions because she entered information incorrectly, and they are charging me 4 times what the cost should be. The billing for my visits were also messed up and I truly think she has no idea what she is doing when it comes to insurance and billing. She is a menace to patients and should be terminated for not only the numerous errors in her work but also her attitude. read more

I have to say, I've now had an issue with the office manager or someone scheduling on more than one occasion, which I referenced in my initial review. Lowering my rating to reflect. I was charged $60 for "no show" to an appointment I never confirmed. I was offered a date and I said I'd call back to confirm once I check my calendar. I didn't not call back because I couldn't take the appointment. A few weeks later I was hit with the $60 fee. I called to explain the situation but the manager (who is always extremely rude) told me "my girls don't schedule appointments unless they're confirmed, so obviously what you're saying isn't true." I told her it didn't make sense that I've never missed an appointment, I've never even been late, and they'd hit me with a $60 charge for an appointment I didn't make. She said "I can lower it to $30 since I don't know who's telling the truth, I know they wouldn't have scheduled unless confirmed." I told her based on principle alone that I wasn't paying it because I didn't book the appointment. She replied, "maybe you don't understand. I'll try to explain it slower... either pay the $30, or it goes to collections." I asked her if losing a patient was worth $30, and she replied "rules are rules". I tried reaching out to Dr. Betman but she wouldn't take my call, and she never replied to the message I sent regarding the charge or the poor attitude of her staff. read more

Admin team is horrible! I have come in and her nursing staff or whoever rude lady taking my blood work and do the initial consultation was very rude and "angry." She was very short with me when I would ask more about certain questions she was asking me. I am already in an uncomfortable scenario and some professional manner would be expected. The doctor is nice, but usually very quick. I have twice now been wrongly coded and overly charged. I come in for my whatever once a year appt (annual) the requirements from them to get my medication and they continue to code it as something else that is not my routine check up they require. Total scam! My insurance would cover an annual checkup. That is what I am coming in for! And then when asking to code correctly or sort it out they refuse! Horrible way do patients! read more

This review is long overdue. Dr. Shelly Betman has to be the best physician I have ever gone to! She's compassionate, non- judgmental, and thorough. Dr. Betman went above and beyond what any physician should do to make sure I was oki when I was going through something that was impacting my physical health. You can tell she's passionate about what she does and really wants to see her patients be in the best possible health. The portal is great for efficient communication and checking test results- which is a huge plus. Shout out to Jennifer at the front desk. She's always been helpful anytime I've called and seems to be on top of her game even though it's a very busy office. I really don't have any negative things to say about this place. I thought Dr Betman was just OK. What I didn't like was she wouldn't let me get my blood tests at a laboratory closer to my home. She wanted me to come into her office and get the blood drawn there instead. It wasn't convenient for me at all. I don't live in the city- I live in the suburbs and it takes me about 1 1/2 hours to come to the city, park and walk to her office. I explained this to her and she still wanted me to come to her office for the blood test. I can only assume it was because she would get more money. I changed doctors who allows me to use a lab close to my home and it is so much easier now, and I actually like my new doctor's care much better! read more

I've been going to Dr. Betman as my primary care physician for 4 years now and have recommended her to a number of friends who now also go to her as their primary. She is direct and to the point, but incredibly personable at the same time and she makes sure you know that she cares and is not looking at you as just another number coming through her office. Dr. Shelly Betman is the most amazing primary care physician one could have. She genuinely cares and enjoys spending time with her patients--there may be slight waits before appointment but this is only because Dr.B never cuts a patient short she listens carefully to everything said , writes notes, and asks insightful questions in response. I have seen Dr.Betman for almost 10 years now and have had several complicated health issues. Dr.Betman came and waited with me before my surgery as I was afraid and she was there when I woke up hours later ! Not only that--while in the hospital she came daily to see me (even bringing her kids with on days she was not even working)---if that doesn't show care and dedication what does ? She is not in the office every day as she sees less patients than most doctors in order to be able to fully give each patient the time they deserve . There is a second doctor in the office though for days she is not there. The office is pretty good about getting you in if there is an urgent issue . I had a minor pharmacy thing the other week after hours called the office and Dr.B was on the phone within an hour with the pharmacist taking care of it (and that's after business hours)!! When I have needed to see specialists like cardiology she gives excellent recommendations like to my cardiologist Dr Vera Rigolin . She gets appointments fairly quickly with the TOP specialists and coordinates care. Or my orthopedic surgeon Dr. mark Bowen --who created an ACL ligament for me at the age of 21 when I was an athlete born without one and haven't had an issue since ! Dr.Betman has also been excellent in coordinating my care before numerous complex GI surgeries (like I mentioned even being there before to make sure it all went ok). I see her for follow up weekly so I can attest to the quality of care & that she is the most amazing physician one could ask for! Goes way above and way beyond . Gives samples of expensive medicines . I am type 1 diabetic my AIC has consistently been around 5.2 since seeing her (that is perfect ). Not as relevant but she has very good fashion taste and really cool shoes ! :-) If you are looking for a brilliant doctor with an excellent bedside manner look no further she is the best!!!!! read more

Dr. Bettman has been the internist for my wife and myself. She cares about her patients and is tough with us about our health. We always have interesting conversations and she shows a genuine concern about my drinking and diet. That is always my least favorite part of the yearly physical. It goes something like this. How many drinks do you have a week? That depends, is it a game week? Were the Cats playing or was the Monday nighter good? Joking aside, I know she cares and keeps us in good health. She and her staff are professional and make our visit easy, even for my needle phobic wife. read more

I was so impressed and happy with my experience I had with Shelly and her nurses (extremely thorough, great bedside manner, make you feel very well taken care of). They are beyond fabulous. I wish I could say the same for the reception staff - they have been short and not warm on the phone, I even got hung up on prematurely / was rushed off the phone. As a 53 year-old I figured it was about time to use an internist for my primary care physician. I did not research, she was the first person to come up in a search. At first I was reluctant to have a female doctor if you know what I mean, a prostate massage (if that's a massage, why would I rather be punched in the face, and then there is that cough, cough thing). Didn't phase her so it didn't phase me. Have you ever had a doctor that didn't have darting eyes meaning it was time to see the next patient on the production line? The kind that questions seem to irritate? In Dr. Betman, I found a doctor who truly cares about her patients. She takes notes when you are talking and has several follow up questions. Unlike many doctors, she has the power of observation which improves her ability to diagnose properly at a very high rate. During my last visit, she asked me about my family. She wasn't asking how they were, she was wanting a family medical history. At the end of the appointment, she asked a question I've NEVER heard from a physician. And I quote, "Okay, we know what's going on with you, what I want to know is how you are feeling? Is this problem interfering with work or your family?" And finally, Dr. Betman is on time. I suspect she sees a third fewer patients than money machine doctors. To say Dr. Betman is good is like saying water is wet. And for other guys out there, get over the female doctor thing. All you should care about is a highly skilled physician and she is that in spades. If you're not impressed, I'll pick up your medical expenses (well, I would if I was rich and not a school teacher). Update five years later. Even better than before. Truly an exceptional physician. There's something about being known by my name, too. Don't let them poke you for blood unless you absolutely make sure that your insurance covers their blood work! I switched to her because she was in my network and the visit would be covered by my Humana insurance. However, their blood work gets sent to Central Dupage Hospital, where my blood work is not covered by Humana. So what was suppose to be a covered visit ended up being $700 physical. And this is all after I told them I had blood work and EKG done the day before at the same hospital in another clinic, and the nurse said, "this is standard procedure." I also don't like that I never talked to Dr. Betman once about my results. The nurse called to tell me, and they weren't even detailed. read more

She listens and makes you feel like she cares. I now have referred 3 other friends to see her! Her receptionist is not friendly however and she is only in the office like 3 days a week which can be a pain but you can see another doctor in the practice. Be careful about getting blood work and any tests done because they arent always covered and I ended up with some expensive bills from the lab! She gives me free samples of my migraine medication because my insurance co pay is so high! read more

Best Internist Ever! When I needed a new internist, I asked around, and everyone who had ever seen Dr Betman was still with her, raving about her care, bedside manner, etc. I saw her once and was hooked! There have been quite a few things over the years that required a specialist recommendation, and I will say each and every one of those was an excellent doctor who handled the issues wonderfully. I cannot recommend Dr Betman highly enough. She is caring, perceptive, and spends the time with me that I've always valued in a physician. Her rudeness has made me question leaving this practice. When it comes to dealing with sensitive medical issues and patients who may not be feeling well, the receptionist has a really important job.
