Many times of the day, there's enough of a breeze to keep things cool. Second, there's a fun playground for the kiddos. Even if you don't have kids with you, I like hearing the sound of kids playing. I enjoy that this is a great place to start for a hike up to Double Peak Park. If you are working your way up to hiking further, you don't need to go very far to get to some nice view spots.

We walked up to the check-in desk, provided our info, and were given instructions, star maps, and red lenses for our phones. We then walked to Mahnita Boyden-Wofford Amphitheater (a large cement amphitheater) and found seats facing the volunteer ranger presenting the night's info. Unfortunately, it was a bit too foggy to see much. The volunteer ranger (John Walsh) answered questions and explained differences between various stars, meteors, satellites and sky debris. Occasionally, the sky would open up for us to see a few stars. We did get to see the summer triangle and a satellite though. It was a good learning experience and I hope to do more in the future on a clear night. Tip: apparently it's tarrantula season so watch your step.

The trail itself was pretty quiet. We passed a few people here and there. It's very well maintained, though there aren't any signs or clear directions at certain points, so I'd recommend using AllTrails to stay on track. Also worth noting, there are no trash cans along the route, so plan accordingly. The trail is technically listed as not dog-friendly, but we did see a couple of dogs along the way. We did the 4.5-mile overlook loop. There were a few sections that were a bit steep, but overall it's a fairly easy hike with mostly flat terrain. There's a lot of greenery throughout, and the creek adds a really nice touch. It's a really scenic and peaceful setting. It took us about 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete. We went on a cloudy day, which ended up being perfect for the hike. Overall, it's a beautiful, well-kept trail and definitely worth checking out.

Beautiful mountain that is littered, but I'm sure the city of San Marcos will plan a city-wide beautification project. Update: There's a bunch of cords and ropes going down the white "P" rock formation, but it gets woodsy, and I felt an ominous omen. It feels like a barbaric encampment (Civilization fan here), so I climbed back up and enjoyed that little rock-climbing/bouldering workout and took a different trail down towards Borden. What a relief to see Palomar College across the road because I feel this is not safe for solo travel. GPS and supplies can only go so far. Make sure to go with an official Meetup or well-known FB hiking group and carry emergency equipment with you like plenty of water, a first aid kit, sunglasses and a hat in the hot summer months, maybe even a beanie/scarf and a mini-umbrella during the cold winter months, and a hand-crank radio. This is due to it being primal still. There's no playground or bathroom. It's a parking lot, then you walk down on the dirt path to the lake, which is also a dirt path around the lake. There lake is bigger than Discovery and it's a good loop. There's no shade. And since it's a dirt path, it's harder for kids to bike or walking. You can access the lake by driving or by a trail that connects the lake with Discovery Lake. The elevation is flat, and good walking loop. You can rent out some space for picnics and parties but not sure if you want to as it's all dirt and there's really no tables or seating area. Solely for a nice peaceful walking path with you, a friend, a stroller or a dog.

You eventually come to some falls that are partially obscured by vegtation, but that sound is a great reward for the walk. I imagine this trail is only worth it when there has been some rain, as it was soo green, but by Summer that will all be gone. Make sure to wear pants as the trail is literally overgrown in some spots, and you can never be too cautious with ticks everywhere (we found one on our canine companion).

The trail is a great spot for both walkers and nature lovers, offering lots of trees, backyard view of a neighborhood and quick escape from city (within the city). There are three opening paths an enjoyable peaceful walk-path (within little to no elevation) around two loops. During the walking area, there is an opportunity to take in the views two bridges providing a perfect outdoor experience in an urban setting. There is a pond populated by ducks on one end of the parks main entrance.
