Ultra world class wines ! I was lucky to be able to taste as part of the Foley family of wines affiliation. It was my first visit and I was truly impressed. The two young men serving me were truly knowledgeable of the wines with full awareness of every step of the wine making process They were able to recommend food pairings and welcomes me very earnestly. I was truly made to feel like a 'family' member even though I am a member of a sister winery. This is rare now as many wineries regret the family affiliations and discourage you to go to sister wineries. Lancaster appears to take a more sophisticated approach making everyone feel equally wanted and cared for. The winery is beautiful and hidden deep within Chalk Hill road. It is a very beautiful winery with a medium-sized tasting room in a modern castle décor. One of the best reds I have ever tasted is their finale the Nicole' red blend 2013. Robert Parker is dead wrong on this one... as this is a monster wine... one of my best of 2017 so far! I ended up purchasing a bottle and am looking forward to a special dinner. I have nothing but ultra positive feelings for this winery... and the Foley family of wines. I was treated like royalty at their sister winery Sebastiani.. and now at Lancaster. This is a family of wines I can stick with. There is a trend for many tasting rooms to rush you through... but this was not the case. It was a relaxed and educational tasting. I wish I remembered the two gentlemen's' names who were working .. but they were top-notch professionals. read more

Wowsers! Thanks, Yelpers, for another wine country find! I never would've visited Lancaster Estate if it weren't for the reviews and "nearby" function on the Yelp app. 5-stars and 50+ reviews seemed like a no-brainer. That and they were .2 miles down the road. Lancaster is new-ish, with a selected number of whites and reds to choose from. What they lack in quantity they make up for in quality. Mostly their Cabs to be exact. I'm not a huge, huge Cabernet lover, but Lancaster could convince me otherwise. The tasting room is fancy! Guests feel a little bit like royalty when they walk inside the cool, castle-like interior. And even though it feels hoity toity, the gals behind the tasting counter are very warm and friendly. They let you hang out as long as you like without judging. Bottles of vino here don't come cheap, but they are high quality. So if you want to impress a family member or co-worker, I'd consider a bottle of Lancaster Estate and you'll officially be their new favorite. read more

Awesome Cabs! If you thought their 2006 cabs were good, their 2007s are even better. Tasted the 07 Estate Cab and 07 Nicole's Red. Both were outstanding today and will be even more refined over the next 10+ years. Very nice tasting room and cool caves. read more

I live in SF and took 6 friends visiting from DC to Healdsburg for the weekend. Lancaster was our first tasting appointment and the perfect way to begin our experience. Liz provided us with a wonderful tour of the gorgeous private estate and tasting in the winery's cave. I highly recommend Lancaster if you're looking for a very special wine tasting experience. However, Lancaster rightly only accepts appointments, so they will likely never over-book their tastings Bring-your-own-picnic possibilities: Limited Folks serving you wine: Fantastic customer service all the way around. It's not loud and boisterous in there, and they gave us a complimentary wine cave tour that was AWESOME. They had a couple of areas for private parties (small) that were just beautiful. We got to learn alot about the type of barrels they use, how it affects their wine, how they blend...it was great. Best wine: The estate Cab, although their newest addition to the family, Samantha's Sauvignon Blanc, was pretty good and I don't really like SBs. Quirky feature: When you go, see if you think the contemporary lion statue looks like what it's supposed to. read more

I have not been to a lot of wine tastings in my life, but I can say with great conviction that this place is the best that I've been too. The concierge at our hotel (Hotel Healdsburg) set us up with an appointment (I'm not sure if they take walk-ins), and I'm very glad she did. Upon arrival we got a quick history of the winery by Sarah, on the way to the cave for the tasting. Yes, the tasting is in a cave, the same place where they age all their wine. Apparently it is naturally the correct temperature, and they do not need to heat nor cool it. We tasted 4 wines, only three of which I could remember: 1. Nicole's Proprietary Red - A big, bold, full bodies red. Perfect desert wine, to be served with a massive piece of chocalte cake. 2. Sophia's Hillside Cuvée - I didn't even know what a Cuvée was before trying this red, but let me tell you, I sure know now! An excelent bottle, a perfect red to eat with your steak, or after diner while relaxing. 3. Samantha's Sauvignon Blanc - A perfectly light and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. In the end, I wound up purchasing an assorted case and having it shipped back to NY. This wine doesn't make it out to the east cost since they're a boutique winery, so a few times a year I order some online. Has become one of my favorite domestic wineries. read more

If I could give 10 stars to Lancaster Estate...I would! I normally don't write reviews for any wineries (50+) we've visited, but our experience at Lancaster today stands out well above from the rest in all aspects. It is an absolutely breathtaking estate for only 6000 case production. From the ominous gated entrance up the road to the winery in the shadow of Ted Simpkin's (owner) magnificent home. The tasting room and barrel cave entrance are reminiscent of rustic Italy with a tasteful modern elegance about them. Upon entering the tasting room (by appointment only) we were greeted by Crystal who couldn't have been nicer. The tasting room wall was adorned with a Peter Lik-esque panoramic photograph of Lancaster Estate vineyards. Brittany took over the tasting lead from Crystal and didn't miss a beat. She was incredibly knowledgeable of Lancaster's foundation, mission, wines and terrior. Lancaster produces 4 wines, unfortunately Nicole's Cab (their premier wine) was sold out for the vintage. Their Sauvignon Blanc was too die for. Having tasted numerous SB's it was by far my top two favorites, along with Gary Farrell. But we were just getting started. Both of their Cab blends were incredible, some of the best that the world has to offer, and with the best the California can produce. After our tasting we got a walk through of the barrel cave. It was a beautiful cave with an outstanding library tasting area. I wish that we could've tasted in there, but it was for wine club members only. It was cool enough to make me want to join the wine club. Bottom line is that this place is a real unique find and definitely put it on your list for places to visit next time you are up in Sonoma!" We had an appointment at Lancaster. Due to my mistake of writing down the wrong time, we showed up a half hour late. We were rushed to the tasting room by Thomas who seemed utterly annoyed with us and extremely inconvenienced. We were very apologetic, but that didn't seem to matter to him. Katherine was our guide in the tasting room. She soon warmed up to us and all was forgiven. Their wines are great, the tasting room is beautiful and it's definitely a place to check out. Joanie at check-out was super nice and sweet, too. She definitely helped make the experience better after the rocky start. This winery has stellar wines, beautiful property and a great tour. We have done a lot of tours on this trip and the stand-out feature for Lancaster was the drive around the property. This is an Estate winery with a capital E so they care alot about the site.. Liz talked about the grapes and even showed us how to tell a cab sauvignon from a petit verdot by the leaves. Their caves are simply beautiful - not over the top like Jarvis, but elegant. But you really visit this place I think for the stellar cabs. It was striking to me how few cases they made given the acreage they plant, and that apparently is the result of being, well, really picky about the grape juice, They throw alot out during hand sorting and only take first run juice. Stylistically they are after the classic french bourdeaux but these wines are anything but restrained - however, they are nicely balanced and a great counterpoint to the Napa cab. Worth the hassle of making an appointment - and a great place to learn even more about wine. read more

The caves are really cool to see and the tasting room in the cave is pretty awesome. We enjoyed lunch out on the patio which was a lovely view of the gardens and vineyards. I enjoyed mostly all of the wines that were poured on the day we visited. Coming in from the east bay, it was a pretty long drive - but we obviously were prepared for that. The tasting room couldn't be in a more perfect location, absolutely beautiful drive and very close to neighboring locations. To be honest, their prices are high - so prepare for that. However, it makes sense because it's such a low volume winery. They don't really distribute too many of their bottles - actually, I've only seen 1 particular vintage at Costco. We chose to visit this winery because of our sister winery membership in the Foley Wine Society - so I can't remember how much the tasting price was, unfortunately! My only gripe would have to be that the actual tasting room itself is pretty tiny. read more

What a delightful experience. We were greeted by both Greg the Tasting Room Manager along with his number one "Sunday\Fun Day" Executive Pour guy Mike (also goes by Miguel). Both of them were amazing and both came with a world of wine experience. Our tasting was outside near the bean bag toss game (which my 7 year old loved). We tasted 4 amazing Reds, all Cabernet Bordeaux blends, each seemingly better than the previous. We also got a tour of the caves, which were HUGE, and nice and cool. Visited Lancaster Estate winery for the 1st time this morning. Duncan introduced us to a variety of their Bordeaux style wines after offering us a welcome "splash" of their 2020 Sauvignon Blanc and an informative tour of their cave. The Sauvignon Blanc was terrific, & unlike other Sauvignon Blancs, it was aged in concrete, which gave it a unique & pleasant character. All of the Bordeaux style wines we tasted were fabulous, but their 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon blend was outstanding. Duncan provided an extremely informative and entertaining experience. We highly recommend a visit to this winery. read more

My husband and I visited Lancaster Estate over the weekend. We were the only people in the tasting room and received fantastic service. It's a very pretty estate and some later guests told us that the tour was definitely worth doing. Sadly we were too late in the day to participate. Next time... We were able to try all of the current offerings: a sauvignon blanc, 2 red blends, and the cab. I don't recall which red blend we preferred (both were delicious) but they are mostly cab so those who prefer a lighter red should look elsewhere. All of their wines are big and bold. The wines are on the pricey side but no more than a Napa cab of similar (or sometimes lesser) quality. We took home a bottle of the cab and can't wait to open it (in 5-7 years) as a great memory of our weekend. read more

Me and my boyfriend had private reservations (which was very nice) for the estate tour and cave wine tasting last thursday 9/10 with Neal. First, he drove just us in a large SUV around the whole estate telling us about each vineyards, how its grown, the process of wine making, etc. After the drive, we went into the caves which were really beautiful and did a wine tasting in the library. We tried 1 sauvignon blanc and 3 other red wines. They were all very delicious! We ended up with signing up with a wine club and very excited to go to the member only events at Lancaster estate soon! The estate tour, tasting and service is exceptional!! The best experience in napa valley!! I will be going back to Healdsburg more often now.. the drive from SF is well worth it just to go to Lancaster Estate! read more

Went to Lancaster estate over Labor Day weekend and did a tour and tasting. Booked the tour after reading the great Yelp reviews, however I was not blown away. The tasting room/entry room was very crowded which could have been due to the holiday weekend. Our tour had 15 people on it and we were waiting for a large portion of the tour so it started about 15 minutes late. We got a couple of additional tastes while waiting so wasn't too annoyed. The actual estate was very pretty and the cave is very cool. Our tour guide was very sweet and nice but not the most knowledgeable. Overall the wine was very good, my favorite was the Sauvignon Blanc. I won't be booking another tour here anytime soon, but still had an enjoyable time with friends drinking wine. read more

Wonderful cabs! We bought several Sophia's. Lovely staff who spent the time to educate us and discuss the local area. We became members! When we went home, drank our first bottle outside the winery. Visited Lancaster on an annual girls wine trip (30 plus years and counting) This was our last winery of the day (#4) and although we went to some other fabulous wineries Lancaster surprised us as our fav. It wasn't the view (we already had that at McKrostie and Robert Young...) but rather our wonderful host Quin and the really yummy wine. Quin was charming and HOT so coupled with the wine and yes the Estate was beautiful it was a highly recommended visit. Ask for Quin and tell him the girls from Los Gatos sent you. read more

Lancaster Estate is a breathtaking property and it was a privelage to visit the grounds. Our tasting was led by the wonderful Oona, who demonstrated extensive knowledge of the business and genuinly made sure we were having a fun time. They hold their tastings in the caves (furnished with chain-mail deco). I never felt rushed, and she was so generous on each pour. Overall, the experience was rare and exceptional. One of the best wine tastings/tours I've ever been on! You must make an appointment in advance, but its well worth the effort. For $20, you taste four of their amazing wines while getting a guided tour of the gorgeous estate and wine cave. Sarah was our guide and our group was lucky enough to get her to ourselves due to another group arriving late. She was extremely knowledgeable about the wine and wine making process, but more importantly she was as nice as could be and was able to put up with our very talkative and inquisitive group. Lancaster seems to go over the top to ensure the quality of their wines, not to mention the property is beautiful and the staff is extremely friendly. The only thing is that you must like Cabernet Sauvignon, because that's their specialty. Overall, it was well worth the trip, and cant wait to go back! read more

She was not knowledgable and was way too casual during our tour, picking her nails, yawning and talking more about the party she went to the night before than the wine. Lancaster is in Healdsburg, and personally I had not heard of this winery, but it was recommended to someone in our group. What a great find. They have a short cave tour that concludes with a tasting in a beautiful tasting room inside the cave. Luke, was a great guide, was prepared and knowledgeable and took his time to take us through the Lancaster story. The cabs were excellent. We bought several, the Nicole being their reserve cab and was one of the best we had the entire trip. If you have not been here before, you definitely need to take the time to visit, especially if you are a Cab person. We have added this to our list of wineries to visit over and over again. read more

This was our second winery tour on our long awaited visit to Sonoma and Napa. We have not been before. It is just a beautiful location and Rich and Samantha took us all around telling us all the history. Lancaster was Ted Simpkins birth name (he was adopted) and as my wife is adopted this had meaning for her. The tasting was held in the caves at a beautiful table and our hosts were very patient and answered all of our questions. We had a lot being virgin winery groupies. Questions not only about the wines and the process but about the whole industry. They were most forthcoming. I expected good wines as they have very high standards using only first run juice. The wines were elegant. The 2009 Sophia has 3% merlot and is designed to drink now. And it was. A lot of folks love complex wines and don't have the ability to cellar at the appropriate temperature, light and humidity for mother nature to work her bottle magic so this is designed with this new market in mind. A very good move. We picked up the Sophias hillside cuvee on site and would have the Nicole but they were sold out. Then on a last minute impulse opted to join the club. This was risky as we had just begun our tours of many other possibly better wineries with other bottles and clubs. Well, we do not regret it and I look forward to enjoying many more delicious wines. We will also order from their sister properties, Chalk Hill, Roth and Kuleto. Definitely one of the highlights of our visit. read more

We are big into Cabs and Lancaster has had some big hits - a 94 point 2009. We booked a tasting, which includes a very nice cheese pairing plate. Thomas (fairly new manager) took us through their caves and hosted the tasting in one of the most impressive tasting rooms we have seen. The picture is on their web site, and it is even better in person. Ok - so - pretty tasting room, but what about the wines? Very, very good cabs. All estate grown and bottled in a fairly small area. I would definitely put them up with the Jordan, Silver Oak, etc. - in taste, quality, and price. We wound up getting some of Sophie's Hillside Cab, but the 2008 and 2009 Estate Cabs were the hits with us. Good nose, smooth, no big tannin bite at the end. By appointment only - two private tasting rooms and you aren't rushed. read more

Neal came and conducted a tasting at the B&B my wife and I were staying at in Healdsburg on our honeymoon. We mentioned we really liked the wines (we're both huge cabernet fans) and Neal mentioned he had some open slots the next day to do a tour if anybody was interested. Having never heard of Lancaster but liking what we had in our glasses, we decided what the heck, lets go. Turns out the tour and tasting was one of the, if the not THE, most memorable on our wine country honeymoon! The vineyard tour with thorough explanations of grape growing practices and techniques was informative and fun. The real treat though is tasting in Lancaster's cave under No Name Hill. All the the wine was already poured (by Neal half an hour before we arrived to give the wine a chance to breath) and we were able to plop down in the beautiful space and taste their Sauv. Blanc, the current release of Sophia's Hillside Cuvee, the current release of the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, and a library wine as well (the 2002 cab. sauv. in our case.). Neal was able to tell us about the winemaking style has changed over time to fully take advantage of what the terrior of their property gives them and lots of other information about the winery and the area. He even recommended a few other excellent wineries to visit that afternoon. We ended up joining the "Wine Guild" and receiving our first shipment today prompted me to write this review! Anyway, we had a wonderful experience, the wines are top notch if you like big, powerful, but elegant Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is 100% worth calling and seeing if you can get an appointment to experience this great winery. read more

I met the new winemaker, Jesse, at a tasting in LA, loved his wine and friendly demeanor, and then made an appointment for when I was up in area. Jennifer just couldn't have been friendlier or lovelier. Not only was there not a hint of pretense from anyone in the whole estate, but the tour was gorgeous and the tasting they set up for us was wonderful, thoughtful, and of course the wines were spectacular. It's tough to find an elegant spot these days that isn't snooty--Lancaster is a sure bet, and their passion comes through. I can't wait to go back and visit to taste a different vintage! read more
