Spire is a luxury tasting experience, so they proclaim on their website, that generally caters to a certain range of clientele. Expect your offerings to be on the more expensive side: $100 per bottle. The experience starts with a booking and quickly followed up by a phone call, which your concierge learns a bit more about your specific taste and determines to build a portfolio that is geared towards it. When you finally make it to the property, which looks like a house, you're greeted by a set of already poured wines. At which point your concierge walks you through the offerings. For those that don't know, the Spire collection is a curated set of small batch offerings from select vinters coordinated by the Jackson family (of Kendall-Jackson fame and largest producers in the region). The offerings provided were from all over over the region: Knight's Valley, Anderson Valley (near Mendocino), of course Alexander Valley, and even as far away as Italy and Australia. Honestly, it wasn't the price point of the wines themselves that warranted the more mediocre review. It was the offerings themselves, which by all means are extremely fine. But nothing I had was sufficiently exceptional that I felt compelled to buy, especially at the higher price point. Nor did I feel like I got to experience the best that Alexander Valley got to offer, which was the point of my driving out there. I'd have preferred a much more local experience but maybe that was a miscommunication on my part. Grade: B+/A- 2012 Vineyard Select Rose of Petit Sirah "Heritage Block" ($20/btl). This was surprise #1 of the day. I don't normally like Rose wines, but this rose of Petit Sirah was pretty delicious. Nice balances and flavors, and tastes good with a picnic on a hot summer day. Grade: B+ 2008 Vineyard Select Merlot "Andre's Block" ($25/btl). Tasted like your typical merlot, very fruity and soft tasting. Cherry undertones. I was hoping to like this wine a bit more, as they had huge discounts ranging from 10% - 50% off of your purchases, depending on quantity purchases. Grade: B. 2011 Vineyard Select Syrah "Marion's Block" ($25/btl). I'm particularly a fan of Syrahs from the Alexander Valley / Chalk Hill region. This Syrah was nice bodied and full. The flavors were sharp (which I like) and generous with cherry overtones. Grade: A- 2009 Vineyard Select Cabernet Sauvignon "Wally's Block" ($30/btl). KAPOW! This wine had so much flavor and depth, it was like a flavor punch to the mouth! WOW! Tons of dry fruit flavors with a dark cherry body. Amazing! Grade: A 2008 "Staten Family Reserve" Cabernet Sauvignon ($40/btl). Another delicious Cab from this winery. Again, very full of flavors, but I found this a bit more mellow than the Wally's Block. He and his staff, Matthew and Josh, did an AMAZING job with explaining the wines and highlighting the features of their products. They even offered to give us a special walking-tour of their vineyards. This place was very busy as there were many groups of people who visited the winery. My friend and her husband took me here a few months ago and I was hooked! First off they had chocolate, mouth watering truffles. The truffles weren't made by Field Stone but who cares, they were there. They also had chili. Now this may have been all due to the taste of the valley so you may want to check it out in June. I have, in the past, had problems where i went to a winery and decided it was awesome and needed to buy a bottle. After returning home and sobering up the wine is eh, eh! However we hit traffic on the way to Field Stone and I sobered up real fast. I can honestly say it was excellent. I recommend the Reserve Cabernet and Petit Sirah. I rarely go to a winery and leave with more than two bottles. I left with 4. Not only did I leave with 4, I drank all 4 in about a month. This is rare. I like my wine but I don't usually go through it that fast. They also had a delicious port. (All still very tasty a month later sober). So hop in your car, with a DD of course and head north to Field Stone. You won't regret it!! read more

I visited Field Stone Winery with a group of 5 other people last Sunday. We were greeted by a friendly fellow who directed us to the right spot where we were then greeted by another friendly guy, Andrew. We had a GREAT tasting here. Andrew was knowledgeable, friendly, and made the experience fun. We all really enjoyed their rose and all ended up buying a bottle. The rose is amazing! I was super impressed and loved all their wines, especially the syrah and petit syrah. If you're in the area, I highly recommend Field Stone. It might not be a super huge magnificent tasting room, but it's one of the best wine tasting experiences I've had in Sonoma County. On a recent trip to Sonoma we decided to visit Fieldstone. I used to be a wine club member here and had a great experience when I visited the winery in the past. When we arrived we learned that Fieldstone had been purchased by the Jackson family. The tasting fee was $30, and the wines were from Oregon, Italy and Anderson Valley which was very confusing. Gone is the family charm, ambiance and amazing stories of Fieldstone, and now most wines start at $50. This was very disappointing. Why do they even post the Fieldstone name? read more

Wonderful Zins, and a very warm and welcoming staff makes Field Stone an always must stop when tasting in this beautiful area. If you stay in Napa Valley like we did, you will love the more relaxed and less crowded vibe of Sonoma County. Unlike most of the Napa Valley spots that seem more like a gift shop with tastings, this place is the opposite, with just a few souvenir items. Although I did love the apron: "Domestic bliss is just a bottle of Cabernet away." True dat! Most of the wineries nearby are known for reds, but we also enjoyed their 2011 Staten Family Reserve Viognier. Nice floral citrisy wine, will go nicely with Thanksgiving dinner. The staff here is a very knowledgeable and dedicated crew, special shout out to the hilarious Matthew. We were coming down the walkway from the parking lot and he was setting up an outside party, stopped what he was doing, hollered out to us, and walked us into the small tasting room. When I mentioned we were also going to a club members party at Stryker, he replies "sir, we don't allow swearing here, esp in front of these ladies!" Field Stone became one of our first favorite wineries on day one of wine tasting. We found this place by accident driving from Calistoga letting the wind guide us on our trip. Josh is AMAZING! You can tell he is very passionate about wine and very educated on the topic. My friends and I ask a lot of questions and he was able to answer every one of them without hesitation. The winery and vineyard itself was cute, quaint, and charming. It's exactly what I expect when I want to go for tastings. They offered a few grape seed oils and souvenir trinkets to take with you. Went there for some wine tasting and a picnic the other day and had a wonderful time! Josh was our pourer and was so easy to talk to and was so knowledgeable! We tried 6 wines and some port and bought a bottle of the Sangiovese for our picnic. They have wonderful tables set up that overlook the vineyards. We forgot glasses and they even let us borrow some. I have been drinking Field Stone wines since the early '80s, and have been a wine club member for almost as long. The always friendly staff doesn't hurt, but what consistently brings me back again and again are the wines. The Petite Sirah is to die for along with the Port and their Cab...and actually their Syrah and their Merlot. But wait, their Chardonnay and Viognier are wonderful as well. What a charismatic winery! It possesses a perfect balance of rustic beauty, taste, and charm. The estates scenery looks as though you are stepping out of a novel. The winning touch was the picnic tables under the oak grove. The sales floor is smaller than one may be accustomed to, yet I found their set up to be more appealing than most.The tasting room associate (Josh) was very accommodating and quite personable. A good friend of mine invited us to visit Field Stone as a thank you for serving as bridal attendants at her wedding. The winery was a bit farther out than the other wineries, but definitely worth the drive. We underestimated the St Helena traffic and ran a bit late to our tasting, but thankfully the staff was warm and inviting nonetheless. A gentleman named Josh took us through a tasting of whites (I especially loved the viognier). From there, he led us on a tour of the grounds. We took in the beautiful growing areas; the cypress trees brought over from Italy many years ago; the historic barn, and of course, the resident winery goat. I couldn't resist snapping photos throughout, as the area was truly gorgeous. Once we returned from the tour, Josh served us a sampling of reds, including syrah, port, etc. We also devoured their cheese platter, which included salami, parmesan, manchego, olives, almonds, and brie with crackers. We could purchase wine if we chose to, or we could pick up a wine-related item from their modest gift shop. Josh also mentioned how a portion of the proceeds from bottles of their convivio wine went to Clinica Alianza, a nonprofit medical center which aids farm workers and their families. We also met John, the winery's owner. He was friendly, unassuming, and asked if we were enjoying ourselves. Most awesome. I really appreciated the intimacy of the winery, the genuinely personable service, and the opportunity to have a private tour. We loved Field Stone! Great views of Alexander Valley. As soon as you walk in you're greeted with rows of barrels. A family winery, it's cozy and intimate. Everyone was knowledgeable and nice. Loved the outdoor picnic barrel tables, a great place for a picnic. They sell adorable wine themed shirts and their photographer takes great photos of the grounds. A definite must stop! On the road from Calistoga up to healdsbur take the time to stop here for sure! The winery looks like a hobbit hole, its a mound of dirt with a door in the side. Which is a good sign because hobbits are known for their love of food and wine (although hobbits would get too much foot hair in the wine when they stomped it). The Petite Syrah is typically huge, inky and wonderful. And they had a late harvest one that was a little pungent and tannic, but never the less very tasty. Many years their Staten reserve Cab is also a favorite of mine. Just outside of the hobbit hole heading away from the road there are a couple picnic tables facing the grapes and under the shade of the trees. Its a great place to stop and eat. read more

It was my first time heading out to wine country and I came to Field Stone Winery with my parents, sister, and her boyfriend on a Friday morning. My sister had purchased a Groupon for the tour + tasting. We were greeted by Michelle, who was a very kind, knowledge, and courteous host! She gave us a great tour of the property as well as the farm. The farm was really cool because not only did they have grapes, but they'd have things like a pomegranate, fig, plum tree, etc. It was definitely a cute and quaint kind of farm... be sure to also check out the teepee tent! The history of the winery is really intriguing so be sure to listen in. Every wine we tried was really good... it was amazing! I say this because we visited another winery later on and we hated every wine we tasted there. It's great because they also provide snacks to pair with. My personal favorites were the Rose and Petite Sirah. The Field Stone wines are definitely affordable and tasty, I can see myself coming back to bring my friends to this place. I went to Fieldstone for my anniversary and had an amazing visit. I totally recommend doing the tour and tasting, it was well worth the money! Our tour guide Major was very a pleasant guy. He was extremely knowledgable and detailed. He told us all about the wine making process, the property history and showed us all the grapes. He even tied some comedy into the tour, making us very comfortable. The service was fast and we were treated like movie stars! The wines were complex and amazing. They all possessed a different quality, making our flight very lively. The property itself is beautiful, with nice seating underneath oak trees overlooking the vineyard for a picturesque setting. The very unassuming exterior of the small stone building housed really great wines! This was, in our opinion, the best of the 3 wineries we visited in the Healdsburg area. Very full bodied reds with rich tannins including their reserve cab. No one else was there when we arrived midday on a Thursday, so we had the place to ourselves, which was nice because the tasting room was not large. The owner poured for us, and my main complaint was how he continued to push their wine club. We didn't want to join, but he kept mentioning it..Anyways, we did really enjoy the offerings here and would recommend a visit. We also walked around the grounds afterwards - a really nice vineyard. As most of our guests are from out of state, they were extremely impressed by the beautiful Sonoma County wine valleys. We took them to several wineries, and Fieldstone was definitely the most hospitable and really went the extra mile to explain the wine process and what makes their wine stand out. All of our guests were impressed and loved how Tom explained about tanins, the tasting process and even served us wine and cheese! I got the one hour tour and tasting for a birthday gift. My daughter and two friends accompanied me. One of the best winery experiences I have ever had. Katherine our tour guide and host was extremely knowledgeable and gave us a history of the region as well as a lesson on types of grapes and vines. We even got to pet the resident goat. Every one of their wines are fantastic with the Sangiovese and Rose' being my personal favorite. Enjoyed it so much I joined their wine club. Looking forward to going back. read more

There were a lot of really great wines lurking in this subterranean wine tasting bunker also known as Field Stone. This was our last stop of the day, and the staff was still very kind and accommodating, which I always admire. Two words, Sangiovese and Gewurztraminer, do it for me. They were the standouts of a long list of quality wines. I also took home a Syrah and a Primativo. The woman taking care of us gave us some great suggestions for our next visit to the area, and provided us with a great map too. This might have been one of the best stops of my day! read more

After living in the wine country for 6 years now, this is the only winery my wife and I have joined as wine club members. This is about as far from the Napa Valley Hwy 29 experience as you can get. Run by John Staten and his family this is a down to earth, working winery with a small tasting room behind the barrel room. Beautiful vineyards, plenty of picnic tables, fun events throughout the year where you can learn about and tast different types of wine without having to know all the fancy words. If you like port, their syrah port is fantastic. They do several reds and whites. All are very good. We have several bottles we're saving for a few years. The winemaker is always happy to chat and the tasting room staff is friendly. $5 charge for tasting. Bring a picnic, buy a bottle, and find a table. They'll loan you some glasses. An intimate and casual tasting room that's hidden behind rows of wine barrels...you walk in through double barn doors at this historic winery that is easy to miss on 128 unless you're looking for it. About the only thing it's missing is a commanding view of the surrounding valley, but once you sample the wines made from the 100+ year old vines that remain on one part of the property, you'll quickly forget about it. I really enjoyed the style of winemaking and the homage to history that surrounds you in the tasting room. These are some very affordable and great-drinking wines. The tour of the beautiful estate and vines was fabulous and their wine/cheese tasting was generous and delicious. Wow. Just visited Field Stone and had been a member for years and wanted to reconnect. Total bust. Wayne was not interested in customer service and really did not treat us like real customers. He was more interested in what we were going to buy than customer service. His pours were really weak and his concern was that we were focused on him. The family atmosphere we were used to is gone.
