I've passed by this place a million times and never thought to check it out. That changed this week when I finally went and wow was I missing out. We did a tasting out on the patio. The wines were in an Italian style which is a nice shakeup compared to a lot of other vineyards in the area. The staff was great and really attentive to everything we needed. At the end he came out and accidentally brought the wrong bottle but he figured since he had it he would give us a pour. That wine was the single wine I ever had and unfortunately it was the last bottle so we couldn't even purchase it. I will absolutely come back here because the price was great and ambiance was fantastic. read more

Beautiful vineyard and lovely humans running it! A friend and I came by for an impromptu, early afternoon tasting on a Friday. We ordered an estate tasting and reserve tasting to share (double the wine, double the fun)! Ginnie was our pourer and she was incredible - knowledgeable about the wine, and also just a lovely human. We talked about life, wine and the Warriors while sipping our way through their pinots, zin and petite syrah. My personal preference is for their Pinots, both the estate and reserve were perfection on the pallette! I also really appreciate that their tasting room offers outdoor seating among the vines. Love this Family Winery. They hire well and have some fun entertaining people in the tasting room that's set apart from the winery, keenly appointed with dark wood stain, an area to sit down with your posse (yes that's what it's called in the 2020's!). With plenty of windows and a gorgy view of the vineyards. I purchased 3 wines - untasted because of said rules within our Authoritarian Government driven by Steve S. Feels like Anarchy but he says it will level out once the Covids are gone. The entree level red Lot 96 2017 is an absolute Steal - call and pick some up! $15 or let's split a case. A lot going on, various flavors with enough backbone to stand up to many dishes, but I could definitely drink this by itself. It's delicious and never boring because it's a blend that has many notes. Outstanding! Most expensive- The 2017 Cab - 1/2 Star "Hated it". I feel like someone is playing a joke on me. Odd Phase perhaps - The Cab had restrained- vaguely underlying fruit. Wasn't balanced and every taste over a 5 day period with a vacu pull was off. Not just tannic but off, unstructured. I don't judge bad just because it's not my palate. This was Horrible. I would specify a flaw if I found one that was the cause of something else but it just wasn't interwoven or pleasant. I've had their Cab before and would easily give it a 3.9 or above. Not this particular bottle. I will taste again post pandemonium. The Gianna's Block PS was incredible thanks ! Silky smooth mouth feel, lush, plum, and mature blueberry jam (not the sweet kind). Notes of Chocolate- if I was forced with fire in my eye I'll guess 50% Kakow - Cocoa with higher ph - not acidic, all nuanced together to make a super delicious wine. I would buy a Magnum. - Juan Pablo gives this Petite Sirah a 21 gun salute. FANTASTICO!! I thoroughly enjoyed Augustus and Brian the GM. Awesome fun people. The place we originally wanted to try wasn't open so we stopped by here on a whim and had such a wonderful tasting experience that I became a member that day. This is a family owned winery that has been around for over 125 years. That's pretty cool! I like the laid back atmosphere. Keith who guided us through our first tasting experience here is a really personable guy and part of the reason I joined. The bottles are reasonably priced compared to some of their neighbors. I found that each wine is distinct in flavor which is great because I often feel like I can't tell the difference from one to another during tastings. read more

Visited yesterday for the barrel tasting event, we enjoyed the Pinots they had on the barrels, the grounds are historic with no frills. The winery has been there for well over a hundred years. Very casual setting but not the most idyllic. They have a back patio that overlooks the parking lot and vineyard with some ring toss games. read more

Visited during Winter Wineland 2022. Our 6th year doing wine road winter wineland and just did the Sunday one day option and due to Covid had to make reservations for set times at 4 wineries: Foppiano, Orsi family, Landmark Hop Kiln, Hook and Ladder. Foppiano was our first winery and one of our favorites. It's a beautiful setting and we plan to go back sometime with a picnic. Their wines were very good. read more

We went there because it was one of the 12 wineries listed as 'The Sonoma County Wines to Know' in Karen MacNiel's The Wine Bible. Foppiano has a special place in heart because it was one of the first wineries I tasted at when I just turned 21 and went wine tasting with my parents. The weekend that we came was actually during Winter Wineland and even though we weren't part of the event Jonathan let us taste. Although Foppiano is known for their Petite Sirah it wasn't my personal favorite. I love their Chardonnay (both the estate and the Della's Block) and I liked their Carignane. The Carignane went perfectly with my Thanksgiving feast I had with my family. When I attended Sonoma State I came here every week (in between classes too... haha) to come taste. I don't believe Jonathan works there anymore but he was a good tasting room manager and easy to talk to. I honestly miss my weekly visits. Foppiano is a nice family owned winery that I recommend anyone to come visit if they're in the Russian River Valley! read more

We just devoured a 750 of Foppiano Estate Petite Sirah vintage 2002 and it was sensational: very, very dark; deep nose; complex, rich, rustic, mature flavors that I love of leather, spice, and black fruits; satisfying mouthfeel with some tannic grip still; even some sediment at the end (which I also love). We opened the bottle about an hour before dinner but did not decant or pour any into a glass. At dinner it took 15 or 20 minutes to open up in the glass. In June we opened a magnum of 2006 Foppiano Estate Petite Sirah and it was also rich and satisfying. Last year in June 2019 we opened a 3-liter of Foppiano Estate Petite Sirah vintage 1990 with discerning friends from Australia. It was quite mature but still fully colored and delicious. Over the years I have enjoyed Foppiano Petite Sirah in 750s, magnums, and other 3-liters and it has never failed to satisfy and impress. Some have been Reserves but even the regular Estate bottlings are extremely rewarding, especially with some bottle age. read more

Pretty rock solid tasting. We loved that they experimented with a sparkling pinot noir red wine (channeling a high-end Lambrusco spirit) while also dipping into some Rhône varietals. The reds were far better than the whites for us personally, but overall a very enjoyable tasting. Staff was also friendly and engaging with good stories but not a ton of wine-info dumping. A good spot to grab a bottle or two to take home or wind down a day of wine tasting on the deck in a no frills space. read more

Hey, they have been doing fine wine for a century. They are a value for the quality. Tasting room is cozy and the line-up for the tasting is good. We had a great visit chatting with the hostess. We discovered things about the history of the local wine industry from her that other places were not sharing. Very personable. We purchased 2009 Estate Bottled Petite Sirah, Russian River Valley. Great nose, full fruit palate, even handed tannins, medium finish. YUM! 3/2014 update - We tried their current releases and found one we liked better than before. 2009 Giana's Block Reserve Estate Petite Sirah is likely the best Petite Sirah in California. It's Petite cousins bottled by Foppiano was recently highlighted in a Sunset magazine article as being one of the best valued Petite's in CA. This particular release is astounding in nose, flavor, fruit, full palate and looong finish. Ideal for drinking - no food needed. Just remember to fasten your seatbelt before sampling. read more

I'm no fop http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fop (go ahead, I'll wait) but if I had to wear a fancy wig just to drink here, then I'd be a wig-wearin' mutha@#$! ;-) My first stop on the way up north to visit relatives in Arcata, Foppiano was a great introduction to the Russian River Valley region. The server was funny and some of the photos here are priceless, especially the ones at the start of Prohibition. (check the photo gallery) I don't recall anything exceptional (or bad) about any of the varietals, except the Cab. I'm only occasionally a cab fan - I usually like the more exotic and spicy ones - but this one got me. And like many wineries in the region, they have some excellent values. read more

As we were driving around in wine country I spotted the sign for this place and suggested we stop here to try their wine. It's very small and nothing spectacular about this place. The had mostly reds here. They're known for their petite sirah. Our wine guide was talkative and nice, but other than that I didn't like or dislike this place. I did however really really like their late harvest, but unfortunately they were sold out. read more

Celebrating our 30th anniversary at Healdsburg this long weekend knowing that it is difficult to get any reservations for anything, but I tried to contact Foppiano Vineyards at the last minute, and what a surprised that Jeremy got back to me. We are able to squeeze in a short visit at Foppiano, but wishing that we have more time to spend in this fabulous, friendly environment. We were greeted by a lady (forgot to ask her name), she was very busy at the time, but still managed to come to talk to us for a while. We loved the Chardonnay, both the Estate and Della's block. I like the private reserve 2017 Petite Sirah the most. We didn't have time to try all the wines since we have already booked a reservation at another winery. So, We will definitely be coming back to enjoy this beautiful place, try all the excellent wines, and the friendly staff. At last, thank you for the complimentary bottle of wine, and the hospitality, giving us a great start and the highlight to our trip. read more

Absolutely loved this place! My fiancé and I were only planning on staying 1 hour, but we stayed well over 3 hours. Pam was our hostess and she was fantastic. Knew her stuff about wine and also went above and beyond with our tastings. We honestly got over double what we were expecting with the tastings. I didn't try a wine there that I didn't like, and we walked out of there with 3 bottles (would've done more, budget allowing). The view is beautiful over the vineyards, and the atmosphere is calming and perfect. Would go back there in a heartbeat. read more

On day 1 of our Sonoma County wine tour we slid into Foppiano Vineyards as our last visit on our Platypus Winery Tour! This place is owned by a very very very mature man...like nearly 100 years old! He is still kicking and made an appearance while we were there and was all smiles that we were enjoying ourselves...of course, we were hammered from visiting 5 wineries in 6 hours...hehe They had a great tasting altho the staff was a bit short with us...I think they had had a long day...too bad for them! Our host was respectful and knowledgeable and shared the history of the vineyard. Quaint and unassuming, the vibe is chill and chic. They are building a deck which will be amazing in summer. Day 1: Post Ironman 70.3 Wine Tour - RUDE server! (July 16, 2012) This was our last stop of our wine tour and it came highly recommend by our guide. When we arrived, there was one other couple being served when we arrived but our group made our way into the tasting room. The gal working asked if we were all tasting in which we all replied yes. In a very demeaning tone, she said that we better buy something if she had to do all of our dishes. There was no jokingly smirk after it was said - it was matter of fact. There was an awkward silence for awhile because of it and we all paused and looked at each other in shock. After the 2nd or so tasting, she made another comment to one of my friends that unless we were buying something, we were all going to pay for our tasting. It really put us off. For one, we had every intention of purchasing for our tasting and two, if only she saw the cases and cases of wine stored in the bus that our party bought from the 4 previous wineries we went to, she wouldn't need to be so concerned about what we were going to purchase. It really put me off so I put the $5 for the tasting on the counter and went outside to sit on one of the benches. I could've easily purchased a bottle or two - or even went through the entire tasting if the gal wasn't such a prude. In the end, several others bought a few bottles but if she were at least pleasant, we might've done more damage. This was the one winery that we all bought the least from - you can thank the girl working on July 16th for that. Because of this...I don't have any intentions of coming back. I've already given you $5 that I can't get back and there are plenty of other wineries that I'd rather visit. Foppiano unfortunately was a bust for us! read more

First winery we stopped at for this vacation. We bought the estate tasting and wandered in and out of the tasting room to enjoy the beautiful day outside. They have a nice picnic patio area behind the tasting room with a view of their vineyards. We started off with the pinot noir, followed by their zin. In a change of pace we had a taste of their Grant Station Carignan. This then allowed him to pour the estate petite sirah followed by the Gianna's Block petite sirah, which was my wife's favorite. As this was harvest season, there were walnuts, figs, and avocados literally for the taking, planted around the picnic area. (My wife did ask first.) A very friendly and enjoyable tasting room on the outskirts of Healdsburg. read more

Unfortunately, I wished I had experienced what some of these other Yelpers had experience. If I could give them a 2.5 I would, but an "A-Ok" I just couldn't give. We stopped in here on a Segway tour, and I'm sure the sommelier was probably thinking to herself, "great, here we go again" but hey, they must have worked something out with the Segway company and I would have expected her to at least be nice to us. The tasting was $5.00/ea, so my wife and I decided to share a tasting since she is not a big wine drinker, so we got one tasting, the lady said she would charge us at the end just in case we decided to buy a bottle of wine, in that case our tasting would be free. This is pretty customary for most wineries, so I understood. The sommelier poured our wine in our glass, which at times was barely an ounce of wine. I'm a certified bartender I know how much an ounce of liquid is! Since their wine was so-so I didn't really complain that much. My wife would take a sip here and there. Overall, there wine was ok, but personally I wasn't a fan and nothing stood out enough to get me to buy a bottle, my wife didn't care for anything either, so we decided to just pay for our tasting and leave. The sommerlier rang us up and our $5.00 tasting turned into $10.00 because my wife and I "shared." I wouldn't have been so upset if she was pouring us enough wine for 2 tastings but she was barely giving us enough wine for 1 tasting, but I didn't want to make a scene and just paid my $10.00 and left. I guess I should have bought a bottle of wine, at least I would have gotten something out of it! On a positive note, there grounds are beautiful and I did appreciate the Seagway through it. read more

There are 2 reasons to go to Foppiano: 1. Some of the best Petite Sirah in the world. This varietal is often used as a blending grape in Cab Sauv and Zin, in order to give weaker wines a kick of spice and body. Done as a single-varietal, this is a hard wine to get right. At its best, Petite Sirah is full-bodied and peppery, with strong spicy notes and very dark fruits. Foppiano's Petite Sirah is wonderful, and reasonably priced. You will often get the chance to taste and buy wines from the early 90s, which is rare for any winery. My 1992 Petite Sirah, however, had mellowed to the point of becoming almost Burgundian---the full body and strong spice had disappeared, leaving a very mellow wine. Anyone who is a fan of French wines would have been pleased, but it was a bit disappointing for this fan of big California wines. 2. This is wine country divorced from pretension. A true family-run winery, the tasting room is old-fashioned but comfortable and inviting. The staff isn't dressed in size 00, form-fitting dresses, but LL Bean. Almost like they were farmers. Which, after all, is what wine makers are. If you need to hear the dulcet strains of harp music play while you taste, this place isn't for you. If you'd like to get away from the bustle and fakeness that pervades wine country, you'll love it. read more

Stayed here for nearly 2 hours! We had to visit since my wife is a Petit Sirah fan. Pam is an excellent host and goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome here. The winery feels very much like a home. The estate bottlings are pretty good but the reserve wines are excellent! We especially liked the Gianna's Block Petit Sirah, Nono's Zinfandel, and Della's Block Chardonnay. The carignan was a surprise hit! If you are looking for good wine at a reasonable price point and a welcoming atmosphere, make sure you visit. read more

I went to Foppiano Vineyards for the Paws for Love event last week. My puppy gave his tails up by proudly pooping by the vines. Don't judge us, it will make exceptional fertilizer. In all seriousness, they gave us doggy disposal bags wrapped around a very generous wine glass. It is a gorgeous vineyard with a great back yard area. My pup was able to do a wine barrel agility course. For the excellent price of $10 we were given lots of wine, and he painted for a charity auction. The people at Foppiano were gracious. Luckily, one of the wine pour ladies was flirting and my friend gave me her special "self pour." Amazing what happens when your glass goes way beyond half full-never view it as half empty. I apologize for trying to dip my bread in the yummy olive oil while the lid was still on top. Got to love the "ooze" guard. Protects the world from tipsy fools like me!
