No one was in the gate attendant shack when I pulled up but there were easy to follow instructions to self pay. It was only $5 for a day pass which I thought was a great deal! The hike along the nature trail was beautiful. There are many areas where you're able to look out over the lake if you follow the "hiking" trail. I took my doggo with me. I personally didn't think it was a very strenuous hike, but I'm also fairly active. Be careful and watch your footing. I also came across what I would call a "hidden beach". Unless you hike to it or know where to locate it via boat, it's quite private. I thought it was absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to come back once everything greens up and bring a lunch with me to enjoy it for longer. The trail seemed well maintained and there wasn't any trash anywhere which is what I always like to see. I hope to get back to this lake before the end of summer. I'm trying to visit a different Tulsa District Corps lake each weekend this summer! Would highly recommend!!

This is a good lake for winter water fowl, some unusual water fowl have been spotted. You can walk around the entire lake and there is hiking in the area. Read on a trails app that it was technical--yes, yes it was. And also read a review in that same app left on Oct 12 ish, that water might be scarce due to drought--that said, my friend and I left a water stash at a gravel road drive, off the trail about 3 miles from the east trailhead. My Subaru and I were NOT ready for the roughness of the terrain--first time "Off road." Got in and out unscathed! Yay! We started the trek later than we thought we would--which is fine, because the scenery was great! Such a beautiful area! Worth the 2-hour ish drive. Made it through the "Squeeze" downhill. Packed in about 1.25 before we decided to pitch our tents. Had dinner on one of the scenic bluffs during sunset and as you can imagine, a wee bit chilly but a stunning view, so it was worth it! Next day, had breakfast on the bluff during sunrise--what a treat! Then headed out to our water stash. We decided we were achy enough to not go back the way we came. Went to our water stash and refueled. Used that (Subaru terrain) rocky road to go back to the main road and follow it back to the car park. *What I learned: as a newbie backpacker it was challenging, but probably would be even if I wasn't? I carried about a 30 pound backpack--probably packed some fears in there--but now I know. Would I go again and do things differently?? Heck yes!!

There are really two parts to this park. It's a COE, Corp of Engineer, park and we've been to many…read moreof those. Some are gated and some are not. This one is not. It sits at the base of the dam and has a campground section and a day use section. This review is mainly for the campground section. It's a pretty park but when we first arrived we weren't sure what to make of it. Grass looked like it hadn't been mowed in quite a while but it was mowed while we were there which really improved the appearance. The inner circle of campsites all have full hookups and the outer circle has water and electricity. We were pretty surprised to see so many who "live" within the system. One camper told us folks go between this park and another park every 14 days. A school bus even comes to take the kids who "live" here to school. Our first night we were on the outside loop and next to one group who played the bass music. Ugh. Where was the host? We had no clue. Yes, there is a camp host or volunteer. In the 5 days we were there we saw him once. A couple of times we went looking for him and never could find him. His site needs to be cleaned up. Stuff is stacked all over. We've never seen that in a COE park either. It was a good place to stay though while weather passed over and would stay again. The park area is nice but think a little more oversight is needed and a little clean-up. I would probably rate the park itself a 4 star but the clutter from the host site and lack of his availability, I moved it down a notch.

Keep to the side of the trail and try to keep your eye out for bicycles as there is definite debate as to who has the right of way (Hint: it's the pedestrians but when your handlebar hits someone and you dump into the road, it's too late.) Playgrounds, picnic tables under a huge picnic pavilion, a basketball court and a disk golf course round out the other goings on here. Oh, and a dog park. i'd stopped at the park for a quick picnic dinner on the way home from dining on light fare at a…read morenearby restaurant on brookside. coming from the south on peoria ave, i was pleased to see that the westside of the park along which i'd been walking was that which has the entrance, off peoria and woodward park dr before you get to peoria and 21st heading south, to the hill where our high school cross country team would run hill repeats. and though after dark is not an ideal time for picnicking or running hill repeats, especially the latter considering the lack of lighting on that specific hill, a few large rocks at the base of the hill absolutely sufficed for the picnicking on the light fare of dot honey mustard pretzels i was doing the other night. nonetheless, i've docked a star due to the large construction site at the park, although i'm willing to transfer the energy into providing a reason for a 4 star review to give as close to starpower as i can muster, so long as the park commissioner or leader of coordinating construction company can breakdown what renovations are in progress on an already beautiful, standout public city park ? and by the by, you can enter the park from 21st st at rockford ave, but just would need to drive a little further around the perimeter to reach an interior parking lot as opposed to driving up the hill off peoria and woodward park dr.
