The Christmas Market time in Germany is super busy and especially on Friday - Sunday. Schumacher alt is the oldest brewery in Düsseldorf. Established in 1838. Thankfully they have modern and clean restrooms to evacuate all the beer drank there. The ambiance of the place is a lively beer hall. There are picnic tables and banquettes of various sizes. The wait staff are intentionally a little rude. Part of their stick. The beers keep coming until you say stop. You get the house brew in 10 oz. glasses. The waiter makes a mark on a coaster each time he brings a round. When you have had enough be sure to put a coaster on top of your glass, or the beer will keep coming. The food menu is large and only in German. It is a good time to use the photo translation feature on your phone. The food was very good and a LOT! The restaurant is covered in wallpaper of old photographs from the founding proprietress, Paula Kleinmann. Oma means "Grandma". The original photos are back with her family when the business was sold in 2023 to the Wolf and Küther-Jankovic families, who still operate it. Grandma Kleinmann passed away in 2009 at the age of 95, but her recipes live on here. The menu is simple - it's all schnitzel. We ordered a regular veal schnitzel with mushroom sauce and a Viennese pork schnitzel with "curry ketchup" so that we could better understand the difference. As far as we can tell, the meat for the Viennese pork schnitzel is sliced thinner and the batter doesn't fall off when you cut it. The meat for the regular schnitzel is thicker as its its batter, so pieces tend to crumble off when you cut it. Both were excellent, so it's just a matter of preference. Our son preferred the regular schnitzel and I preferred the Viennese one. I'm only sad that we had to leave leftovers on the table, but we really couldn't eat another bite.
