We wanted to try the local beer and sit inside so Peter's was a great option right off the market square. We sat at a small table, it did feel like we were in an area primarily for tourists, but we are so it was fine. I had three small beers which were great, very refreshing. We also enjoyed a nice lunch, my sausage was good but the potatoes and cabbage were really the star of the show. So yummy! We did not get the local beer treatment here where they replace your beer when it's half empty, which was probably a good thing. I could have drank it all day. read more

What a great experience! We ordered a bunch of dishes family style to get a taste of all: strawberry soup, sausage, pasta with spinach and cheese, pork belly, braised beef, and veal schnitzel. For lunch prior to exploring the city, I stopped by Peters Brauhaus for lunch. It was a short walk from my apartment. Ambiance (4.5/5): When I'm in Europe, al fresco dining is my go-to. This is an exception to the rule. This traditional German restaurant has a spacious and beautiful interior. Especially the room with stained glass on the ceiling. One of my favorite restaurants, ambiance-wise, on my trip. Service (4/5): The service also exceeded expectations. Service in Europe tends to be a little slow, a little inefficient, and not terribly friendly. This was a departure from that. Our waiter cracked some jokes. I did have to get his attention to get our bill, but overall, solid. Drinks (N/A): When in Germany, beer is the way to go. I wasn't ready to start drinking yet so I had an apple juice with sparkling water---a popular soft drink in Germany. Food (4/5): I started off with the potato soup which is served in a charming bowl with a side of rye bread. It's a hearty soup with potatoes and other veggies, and a creamy one at that. Solid soup. The star of the show was the pork knuckle. Another famous dish in Germany and one that has quite the presentation. One, because it's huge. And two, because they often put a knife through it when they bring it to your table. They have two versions on the menu and the one I selected comes with mashed potatoes. The other option comes with sauerkraut. While it's not my favorite cut of meat, and it was so huge I couldn't finish it, I am happy I tried it. A nice all-around experience. read more

4 Stars for great food and Kolsch in a lively outdoor setting (they also have an indoor restaurant, but we were outside in the plaza). When in Cologne recently, we walked through the city looking for Peeters Brauhaus based on the reviews and recommendations. Luckily, it was a lovely May day and the Alt Markt (Old Market) square was super lively with people standing at high top tables and at picnic tables under shade tents on every side of the square. Peters has a historic indoor restaurant/bar, but we opted for their outdoor area that has its own servers and bar set-up. We ordered Kolsch (when in Cologne...) which came in their traditional small glass, a potato soup, and an apfel strudel. I'm not a beer drinker normally, but wow these beers are light and delicate and perfect for a warm day. Besides the beer, the potato soup was a STAR. It was hearty, had ham in it, and came with a great big piece of bread for dipping. I almost ordered a second one! Finally, the apfel strudel hit the spot. It was big enough for a couple of us to share and it came with cream to pour on top of the icing sugar-dusted top. The only thing that was lacking was the service (it took a while for our server to come back and bring us more beer, and then to get the bill paid), but it was a busy day and that wouldn't have mattered if we weren't in a rush by the end. Went here on a river cruise stop in Cologne. We were told it was a good place to sample Kolsch beer. We had had Kolsch beer in the states, but we're amazed to discover it had been served incorrectly. Kolsch beer needs to be served in a cylindrical glass about 7 Oz at a time. It needs to be drunk quickly to ensure the best taste. The beer here was good and it keeps coming until.you put a coaster on your glass. We also had some very good Wurst and sauerkraut. Food was good, the server had a large patio to cover so was a bit slow. We were in no hurry. Cool to watch the people of the town in the big square. I am a sucker for a good German beer experience and this place is a good try while you are in Köln. The space is large with tons of seating. The service was quick and nice! I only came here for the beer and it was a great experience trying Kölsch beer. They serve them in 0.2L sizes and keep refilling your beers unless you put a cup coaster on the top. read more

Delicious meal and a delightful waiter, plus excellent beer and a super characteristic German restaurant. We ate lunch there today, had a few Kölsche per person, and ordered from the regular menu. I had the little pork chops with vegetables and hollandaise sauce, which came with salad, and it was amazing! My son and husband had Wiener schnitzel which they said was great, and my daughter had chicken and gravy, which she polished off, so it must have been good. We were in cologne and wanted to experience some local food. We stopped in here for lunch. They have a nice lunch menu for a lighter fare. Our table tried the schnitzel, pork knuckle stew and the potato soup. Everyone was happy with their orders and the lunch menu was reasonably priced. This place is popular as it was crowded but we were able to get a table right away. We did have a server who spoke English but many of them do not. They offer a menu in English and German. read more

I love German brewhouses and this was my favorite on my recent trip to Western Germany. If not apparent to you yet, Kölsch beer is all the rage in the beautiful city of Cologne and Peter's brew is on point. They have lots of tasty traditional food too so you can indulge in all sorts of German goodies. The service, food, and atmosphere were all superb and I highly recommend checking this joint out. While the food was good, and the beer was very nice, the waiter was absolutely horrible. Not in a "German waiters aren't nice" way; this waiter was pissed off that we only ordered one beer. He grunted and talked down to us once he learned that we were not ordering another beer. When I asked for the check, he took at least 20 minutes to present it and asked if I was paying card or cash. He was upset that I told him I did not have enough cash, and did not set up the Payment device in a way to allow my card to be used. I gave him a second card (chase sapphire that also had worked all week) and that one "did not work either". He then told me that the ATM was across the street. I went to the ATM, and miraculously, the same card that he had declined worked perfectly. I gave him the cash and we left the premises. While he got the cash he wanted, he also gets this horrible review, and hopefully, many folks considering going to this bier haus decide to attend one of the other 200+ institutions in the city. I understand that Viking has tour groups go there for bier and food - DO NOT WALK, RUN AWAY FROM THAT TOUR. I am sure you will be much happier at another location. read more

Enjoyed this brauhaus during a quick visit to Cologne. It was a nice break from all the walking we had done in the morning. Place was packed but we eventually got seated. Wood panels, wood tables/chairs/benches all over. A bustling brew house frequented even by the locals. Great sign! Started off with the Kolsch, the local pale ale and we enjoyed that. Refills took longer than we were told by our guide but that's okay. We tried the schnitzel and seasonal white asparagus with hollandaise, Ham and cheese with potato rosti, white asparagus and hollandaise, several orders of the Crispy Pork Knuckles with sauerkraut. Delicious, memorable and hope to visit again someday. Service was the downside. Very impatient woman server with poor attitude who sighed and rolled her eyes at us. read more

We stopped in here for lunch midweek. The entrance can be wheelchair accessible. The service was great. The beer was cold and tasty. The lunch menu was under 10 Euro. They had a fish, meat and vegetarian choice. My husband got the fish and enjoyed it. I got the classic sausage with sides. All were very good. The building is beautiful and exactly what you would expect. We will be returning for dinner tomorrow. read more

Lovely visit here. Came specifically for the kolsch. Fantastically refreshing on a hot, hot day. I had the cheese, butter, onion, and roll. Simple fare that was wonderful in every aspect. My wife and friend ordered the minced pork on roll. Known as Mett in Germany. We weren't aware this is raw ground and seasoned pork. Ate super and drank Kolsch beer, exc lady servers kept our Kolsch beer cold by constantly changing glasses. All for a set price that went with the meal which was good but the beer experience was great, we went with a group of Aussie couples and a beer guide, an American expat provided by our Viking ship.
