    Entry!

This place is the quintessential Nova Scotia / Atlantic Coast experience. After traveling non stop in the Maritimes for 2 weeks, I ended my trip with a one night stay at Oceanstone. From the minute I arrived, I was thrilled! It's like a private oasis of lovely. Gorgeous & well-kept cottages, a lovely main building, and beach-side cabins. When I walked into Hollyhock #3, I almost fell over. A huge room that was apartment style with a full kitchen, living room area with couch & coffee table, small dining table, and a large king size bed facing double French doors with an amazing view of the ocean. Like off the wall dreamy! Oh, and then there was the large jacuzzi tub. A perfect place for a romantic getaway or a solo retreat. Strolling around the grounds was something out of a movie. The "wedding spot" with the wooden frame near the beach is definitely something from a romance novel. The beach front is a lovely & quiet spot facing the west with a fabulous view of a lighthouse. I'd say any picture you take at Oceanstone is Instagram worthy! I also loved Rhubarb which was basically on the property as well - great to have a lovely dinner and then stroll back to my oasis. The only drawback of my visit: I only stayed for one night! I plan on coming back next year and am considering a retreat there as well.

While the location is beautiful and the staff were wonderful, this isn't our favourite winery in the province. We did a tasting which was awkwardly presented in shot glasses which we found quite tacky. Nothing in the tasting really stood out and we didn't end up buying a bottle of anything because the tastings are set. You can't really choose off the menu because not everything is available to try. We came for the annual Christmas in Petite, so it was quite busy and many wines weren't available which was a bummer. It would have been nice to select our own options to sample as there is a cost, so not sure we'll make the trip down from the Valley unless it's another annual event. The terrace is really lovely but the furniture could use some updating. Some cute bistro sets would be nice instead of overly bulky chairs and benches that are tough to move. Service was great and friendly so no complaints there. Overall, still worth visiting for location and the scenery, but as wine drinkers, this is pretty low on our list of faves simply because there wasn't much to try that we were interested in.

The grapes are all from the local area vineyards. Pretty nice product for a young wine making region. Also they make some very nice ciders, both dry, sweet and fruit added styles. It is a gorgeous old building in downtown Halifax, and in the last number of years the direction has been shifting; attempting to transition from its fairly stuffy roots, into something a little more accessible and perhaps more appealing to a younger crowd. Last night I attended a theatre performance at The Halifax Club. Zuppa, an amazing local theatre company, staged their play "Penny Dreadful" in the Uniacke room. The play is set in the 1800s so The Halifax Club as a venue, with its high ceilings and large paintings, was a very appropriate choice for the ensemble. The Pryor room bar was open before and after the show and our charming bartender Alex was helpful and generous. I enjoyed a glass of red wine for $7.5 while my date's beer was about $5.5. All of the people we encountered during our evening were very friendly and fun. If you happen to be invited by a member to dine or attend a function at The Halifax Club, you should accept the invitation. If you're hoping to become a member, check out the website. I'm sure it's not cheap, but you can feel both a sense of excitement and nostalgia knowing that you're walking the same halls that James C. Cogswell and William Cunard once did.

He walked us through the menu and any rentals we needed (dance floor) and was really accommodating. We had the place to ourselves and they were able to let the wedding party in early for photographs (damn rain...the only rainy Labour Day weekend in almost ten years, I swear). The food was great. I loved that I didn't have to worry about decorations - a few flowers, a bit of sheer fabric to match our colours on the table and boom! the place was ready to go. My guests loved it and kept saying how classy my wedding was, but it was all because I chose this as my venue. (disclaimer: this is all based on the service I had in 2004).

There was no special event happening when we went, so we just experienced it as a ferry terminal. However, we did eat at Evan's Seafood, the restaurant there and walked along the waterfront. There's a section that has beautiful glass sculptures hanging from the ceiling. And the waterfront has a heart bench sponsored by Charms covered in locks put there by lovers, lol. There's also a liquor store there. I'm sure it's much cooler when there's an event happening, but even when there's not, it's still nice. (190)

But nowadays, Alderney Landing is a special little space all on its own. After disembarking from a nice voyage over the harbour, I was surprised to see a booth booking whale watching tours and other fun aquatic adventures. As I stepped further, I noticed people sitting at a table, enjoying sammies and coffee from a little resto in the building. Not only is there a little alternative product/healing shop, there is an art gallery, an NSLC, a fancy restaurant and a little deli. On the weekends watch out, because this place is turned over to farmers and independent wares producers. Come for the salad greens, and stay for the theatre! The Alderney Landing Cultural Convention Center has a lot to offer. Whether you're looking to pick up a bottle of wine to go with dinner or you're wanting a bottle of infused oil from the deli, this place has a surprising amount to offer. I was quite pleasantly surprised by how this place has expanded over the years. Yay Dartmouth!

UPDATE: Despite numerous attempts on my part and that of expedia's to get in contact with the manager they ignored all attempts, failed to get back to anyone, and they've billed me a full day early instead of compromising in any way (even to give a credit for a future stay or change payment method to an insured card) when their motel is about to get HIT BY A HURRICANE. The location is just right. A scenic drive and a peaceful get away.
