Yesterday was my first time visiting Oakwood Cemetery, even though I have lived here for 60 years…read more It's a beautiful, large, historic place. My wife and I enjoyed walking around, reading old headstones, checking out large mosuleums. It was a who's who of Syracuses history, since its inception. The architecture of the old headstones and mosuleums is amazing. There was two downsides to the cemetary that we noticed. First one was the number of headstones that have been knocked over or broken by vandals, the second one was the presence of the occasional homeless person camped out among the trees and graves. I'm not sure if there is a preservation society that can do something about the vandalism to the headstones, like holding a fundraiser to fix or repair the toppled headstones.

We felt like we were treated like we were apart of their family. We needed assistance in having some of our wishes being met & we were given phone numbers & contacts that would allow those wishes to be met. We found the director very easy to communicate with & any questions or concerns were answered in short order. I myself, live in another state, however, the director made sure I was able to be apart of the decisions & contacted directly until I could arrive in state for the ceremonies.

Turns out he is passive-aggressive, judgy, and sneaky: My sister-in-law had agreed to pay for the funeral from my brother's very significant life insurance policy. "T" knew this from the outset - yet when she didn't pay on time, "T" called to collect from me instead. I said I would help him collect by working on my sister in law - on condition that he not remind her that as a second signatory on the funeral paperwork I could be forced to pay instead. In return for my help, he was happy to agree. Guess what? He went ahead and told her everything anyway - that if she doesn't pay he can just bill me instead - and WORSE, that I had asked him to hide this from her. He gave no thought to issues this may cause between us while grieving the loss of my brother. And it wasn't even necessary because she honored her agreement to pay anyway - but what does this say about "T"? Why would he betray an agreement and backstab someone trying to help him? This was wayyy out there. I think we've all met people like this - quiet demeanor, pretend to be nice .. but for their own reasons plan out sneaky ways to undermine you. Additionally, when I called "T" later to get a copy of a certificate, after the bill was paid of course .. he rudely refused to give it to me. He lost that therapeutic voice and, with a very snotty, judgy tone said that since I wasn't the "paying" party, I could go ask my sister in law. You tell me if this is the type of person you want to deal with while grieving.

Overall my grandfathers services were very nice. The casket was beautiful, he looked great in his…read moresuit, and the facilities were very nice the days of the viewing and funeral. However, there were things here and there that really didn't go well the during the process. During the services, the clergy they provided called my grandfather by the wrong name, and she spent minutes throughout the ceremony shuffling through her binder randomly picking out readings that didn't really flow at all. We truly felt they called her about two hours before the services and she had no time to prepare. We were also pretty rushed during the carrying of the casket to the burial site from the hearse. We weren't given clear directions on how to carry or how to lineup, and even though we had eight pallbearers picked out the gentleman from the funeral home decided to help carry the casket from the back. They were very nice and helpful to my grandmother which was important to us but I hope they make sure they know the name of man in the casket the next time they start the services.
