Obviously the prices are a little bit less than the grocery stores, although that gap seems to be closing. Today I got Roma tomatoes for $.99 a pound which I haven't seen in a long time. The produce always looks good compared to other small groceries. I don't really expect a lot from staff in such places other than keeping it clean and doing a accurate bill at the end, so there's not much for me to say in that regard. I do hope these places keep going during this time of inflation because it is getting very difficult to stock up on anything fresh these days.

The produce is fresh here, the prices are cheap, and it really does feel like a market atmosphere as the people go at it for their groceries, and line up, sometimes a mass line up to pay the bill. It does help their business, knowing that they are the only ones here now selling produce, with the Safeway gone (Bestbuy now), there is no other selection, but they are fair, and the prices and crowds and quality show.

finally checked this off the list, i've been meaning to make it out to the west end farmer's market…read morefor awhile now, and i'm so glad i did. note: it runs until october 25th, so there's still only a few more saturdays to soak it all in. the market runs saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm, from may 3rd to october 25th, at 1100 comox street. it's a lovely neighbourhood spot, lined with trees decorated with cute little bird houses, tall sunflowers nodding in the breeze, and a nearby community garden that adds so much character. there's a nice mix of vendors, pottery, hazelnuts grown in the fraser valley, certified organic farms, honey, eggs, and fresh flowers. picked up a couple of stocking stuffers from the bowen island herb salts stand. there was even live music, giving everything a relaxed, friendly, local community feel. shop local, bring your eco friendly reusable shopping bags, and take your time wandering through. it's one of those markets that feels both cozy and full of little surprises. fair warning though, between the flowers, the snacks, and all the cute handmade goodies, it's way too easy to slip into "treat yourself" mode and walk away with a bag full of finds you didn't know you needed.
