The sense of family and close knit community is felt from the teachers to the administration to the other families. Her teachers have all been nurturing and caring and go the extra mile to communicate with us. The interaction between the elementary and the secondary students is amazing as well. We were unfamiliar with the classical education prior to coming to the River Academy, but now we see what a dramatic difference it makes in the overarching picture of our students academic career. Staff remain on reduced or non-existent work schedules, many teachers still sit at home in their sweats teaching classes, and there is an overall air of apathy from anyone you are able to get in contact with. My daughter almost missed her graduation as a result of negligent credit evaluation even though it was reviewed by three different people. Certainly, there are a few gems here, however, you have to look hard and it may not be worth the time, frustration, or expense to try to find them. Try Central Washington University instead. It is exceptional by comparison.

Mary-Jo really understood my husband and I and helped guide us towards the priorities for the kind of birth we really wanted to have. During labor and delivery, wow oh wow, I could NOT have done that without her by my side. All of her encouragement, guidance, empowering and calming words, and comforting actions helped me all throughout early and active labor, and especially the transition phase when I was birthing my baby. She was monumental in this whole process and we wouldn't have had the comforting, safe, secure, and peaceful delivery we had if it wasn't for her. My husband and I are immensely glad we chose her as our doula. It's a decision we will always treasure. Thank God you were our doula, Mary-Jo! Mark (husband): Husbands, get Mary-Jo as your doula for your wife, period. If you want to support your wife 100% emotionally, physically, spiritually, get a doula and make sure to get Mary-Jo. Yes, be there for your wife and serve her with all that you can throughout the pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum. But honestly though, us dudes can only support our wives so much. In my experience, there's a certain point where you've done all that you can, but your wife just needs another woman's support that you just can't provide as a man. That's where Mary-Jo steps in; she'll provide that holistic support for your wife that only a doula can bring. My wife and I had a traumatic experience in our first pregnancy when we tried to do it all on our own without a doula. Now with our second child, we had Mary-Jo and she made a world of a difference bringing such peaceful guidance and security for my wife and I. On the hot days of summer, Howard Hopkins Memorial Pool is a great place to come and swim a few…read morelaps or splash around as an individual or a family/group. During August and September, especially, when temps are in the 90s and 100s (degrees Fahrenheit) the pool is a perfect reprieve from the heat. The perfect recipe here is the hot days that are also windy. Because the pool is at the base of the Cascade Mountains it doesn't get as much natural airflow/wind normally. However, on the windy and hot days, the wind provides a cooling mechanism while sitting out on a lawn chair on the pool deck. There are some parking spots reserved for patrons of the pool in a parking lot bordering the pool. The rest of the lot is open to everyone, so it can get a bit crammed during the summer and on busy days during prime-time tourism season in Leavenworth. If staying not too far from the pool, I would recommend walking if possible.

Pros: -inexpensive, $6 per non-resident, babies free -the water is warm, we were told the water is 86 degrees by 6am -an entire kids play area with a small slide, fountains, and a zero entry pool -a large lap swim area -plenty of space outside the pool to put your stuff -indoor lockers for a quarter -a couple showers in locker rooms Cons: -didn't see a baby changing station anywhere -the showers were pretty gross with handfuls of hair and old abandoned soap -lockers are small, maybe enough room for a towel or purse (not both) -lap pool is very warm, warmer than the kids area, so my friend couldn't do more than two laps without feeling very uncomfortable
