Dr. Larry Bowen didn't care about his patients. He was just there to earn money. He has no empathy. He only cared about himself. I had vaginal surgery and he forgot to close me up and five years after, I'm still like 4 inches wide open and he hasn't done anything about it. I was referred to Dr. Bowen from my OBGYN and right from the start he was rough and his examinations were something out of the stone age. I had Dr. Bowen do my surgery in 2018 and like the other reviews say I had major complications. When my surgery was to be 4 hours it was 8 hours due to his inaccuracies. Then 2 weeks later I hemorrhaged at home and had to have another emergency surgery that was 2 hours plus to fix a vein he didn't stitch correctly. I wrote a formal complaint to the California Board of Medicine and of course, they sided with the doctor. I am still having nightmares of the amount of blood my husband had to clean up after the paramedics left out house to take me to the hospital. I would never refer this doctor to even my worst enemy. As a retired health professional, it is clear to me that Dr. Bowen although heavily degreed has some anger management issues and mood swings. Possibly related to substance abuse. I wish I could go into detail with what happened the last time I had an appointment...but have decided to go the legal route instead. However, due to the fact that I was purposely and unnecessarily injured I feel obligated to write a review. If I can prevent one person from being injured I think it was worth doing the review. I am a patient of Dr. Larry Bowen and I find what Monica said to be extremely untrue. I've met with him and his assistants several times and I have an upcoming surgery in 2 weeks. I have found him professional yet sweet and he is really patient when he's asked the same question 10 times ! II came to Dr. Bowen with some complicated medical problems. He and his staff are extremely professional and compassionate. After multiple tests, it was determined that surgery was the most effective option. At the pre-op appointment, Dr. Bowen meticulously explained his plan for surgery, his plan for encountering complications and what to expect for recovery. He answered all my questions. Sometimes I needed to hear an explanation more than once and he had no problem clearing up my questions with his responses and diagrams. Terrible bedside manner. Terible! If there's a complication, he blames the patient. He's rotten at prescribing pain medication. I don't know if he doesn't believe in them or what, but after you've been on the operating table for 5 hours, with your insides on the outside, you're gonna need something strong. He is not a nice person. Maybe he has a miserable life, I don't know. His surgical technique is all right, I suppose, but there are others out there who do the same type of work. I heard that this doctor is one of the best in the country, but....expect terrible bed side manners, no understanding (or caring) of what the patient is going through, yelling at the nurses, lack of respect toward the patients (and others?)....The list goes on and on with this guy. I would not recommend this doctor (Bowen), and I am sure that there are better (or equivalent) doctors in the Folsom/Roseville area that would offer a competent surgical procedure AND good (or at least decent) bed side manners! I am totally boggled by the bad reviews of Dr Bowen. From my first appt I have found Dr Bowen to be totally professional, understanding and knowledgeable In his field of study. I even brought a family member because of the terrible reviews. Dr Bowen explained every step of my surgery, including my pain management and the management of my other health issues. I wish I could have him as my primary physician.I and my family are extremely pleased with the care and kindness Dr Bowen has provided me. I would totally refer Dr Bowen to my friends and family. BEWARE! Stay away! I went as a translator for a patient and I honestly could not help but leave a review. This was the most rude, condescending doctor I ever saw! I was left speechless and bewildered after the appointment. I felt so sorry for the patient, she was actually reduced to tears by this doctor! I was just doing my job to translate but I have never encountered such horrific experience and I have dealt with many! Common courtesy and human decency should be the basis of anyone is such a profession especially since it's a specialist where people turn to because of a problem! read more

I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Bowen. I too, as previous review had major pelvic surgery, (cystocele (bladder repair), sling for incontinence, rectocele, hysterectomy, and hemorrhoids). My surgery took approximately 6 hours, a little longer than expected due to an enlarged uterus. I am 7 weeks post op, and I already feel amazing! I have seen many Gynecologists, and Dr. Bowen is by far the best. I thought his bedside manner was great! Prior to surgery (after extensive testing) he sat down with me well over an hour discussing my options, answering my questions, and giving me his recommendations. He does take his work very serious, which he should. I appreciate that quality. I would highly recommend Dr. Bowen if you have any of the above issues. I was a nervous wreck, I had anxiety because I never had surgery my whole life until last month. When I first met Dr. Bowen a year ago he was very warm, down to earth, understanding, honest and very detailed. Dr. Bowen is the perfect surgeon I wanted because he has been experienced for years...he's not fresh off the boat like new surgeons now days. I had medical complications and he drew pictures and had camera in me. He explained in details as I watched the video and made sure I understood the cause of my pain, the condition I was in and what was best for me. He gave me time to talk with my family and weigh my options. I have high tolerance with pain, but Dr. Bowen was right...I can barely tolerate my pain and my family agreed surgery was the best option. I was told my surgery would take up to 2hrs. Instead it was 5hrs and 30min. During my surgery more complications aroused and because Dr. Bowen is highly experienced he went above and be beyond that my surgery was successful. Instead of 1 surgery I was aware to have...I had total of 5 surgeries because more medical complications kept coming. After my surgery, my recovery was very painful and Dr. Bowen let me know I was going to feel pain and will get better. He was there when I woke, he told me what happened and explained my situation. I was emotional and thankful what he did for me. I don't think any Dr would have pulled through for me like Dr. Bowen. My family is thankful for Dr. Bowen. He's a call away, his staff is the best especially Tiffany. They reach out to me and helped me a lot. I wish he was my PCP...I would refer my family and friends and trust my life with Dr. Bowen. For Monica, please don't bash a good doctor. He works hard from scratch and learned from books and hands on vs new technology drs don't know lines now days. I have been a patient of Dr. Bowen since 2010. I had a major pelvic surgery 12/2010 (hysterectomy, bladder repair, rectocele repair and a sling for incontinence) that took about 5 hours. I have never felt better. The office staff and Dr. Bowen are extremely knowledgeable, kind and are very concerned for their patients and their concerns. Dr. Bowen has more than 30 years of experience and it shows. He is exceptionally meticulous, and organized in his thought process. He always makes sure he addresses all our concerns. He aims for perfection and it shows. I am so lucky that I was able to have him do my surgery and had an excellent outcome. After my surgery I was nauseated fro 24 hours due to a side effect from pain medication. he did not rush me out of the hospital and let me stay another day until my nausea was resolved. 6 days after surgery I felt so good that I was able to attend a Christmas party. I recommend Dr. Bowen to anyone who wants the best outcome from a surgeon with the most experience. I regards to the comments below regarding Dr. Bowen. I found him to be very polite, educated and pleasant. He is very serious as he is trying to address all the issues that come up during the appointment. I thought I may have caught Mr. Bowen on a bad day, but it seems like other people have had similar experiences. I was referred to him because I was experiencing symptoms similar to interstitial cystitis and vulvodynia, and I have had several doctors think that I may have the aforementioned condition(s). If you're not familiar with the condition, it basically feels like you have a bladder infection all the time and vulvodynia is essentially vulvar pain. He did not listen to what I was saying at all and was dismissive. He also had an odd fascination in regards to my grooming habits as I keep the hedges trimmed, if you catch my drift. He kept asking me questions about it for several minutes. I'm pretty sure a well-kempt nether-lawn is quite common for ladies, so I'm not sure why this was such a point of fascination for him. He also kept slapping my thigh and telling me to relax. Then he told me the pain was all on my head. Thank goodness this debilitating pain is a figment of my imagination. Needless to say,I have been warning people to stay away from him. There are much better doctors out there. Avoid him at all costs and head to UC Davis if you have pelvic pain. read more

He was recommended by my general physician so I took his word that Dr. Bowen was at the top of his field. My first and last impression was that he is cold, rude, no compassion whatsoever and could care less about your feelings. I have never written a review before. But i have never had this shitty of service from a doctors office ever in my life. I read the Yelp stories and they are so spot on, but my primary doctor recommened Dr. Bowen. So i figured why not. First initial meeting he was short with me and seemed annoyed that i was there. After that i was passed around from Doctor to Doctor, never sent to the same person twice. One practice doctor managed to mess up on a simple test that made it a very very painful experience. Then had to go back to re test. After rescheduling another test i waited an 1 hour and 10 minutes to finally see the doctor. What really broke the last straw is i made an appointment to go back in, they called to reschedule then called to re reschedule my appointment. Then called the morning of my and change it again. First of all, I am very grateful for Dr Bowen's surgical skills. He changed my life many years ago when he did a TVT sling repair and rendered me continent after many years of worsening incontinence and the embarrassment that this condition causes on an almost daily basis. Now I can hike, exercise and travel without fear of having an accident. Since my surgery, I have returned to Dr Bowen twice for issues. His office staff in Roseville is very helpful. They got me in on short notice and explained things thoroughly both on the phone and before and after testing. Going in, as others have said, know that Dr Bowen does not have a good bedside manner. He can come across as rude, abrupt and condescending. That's just the way he is. Try not to take it personally. But he is an excellent surgeon. read more

The reason I chose Doctor Larry Bowen for my surgeon was due to his stellar reputation. He uses the most forward and successful technology to the benefit of his patients. Since my surgery for urinary incontinence, I have not leaked one drop of urine in 18 months. I am 72 years old and I am so thankful to be rid of my former problem. Immediately after surgery, I needed nothing more than a Tylenol for my pain, although I had been offered pain medication. It also was my first experience of having an anesthetic without becoming ill. My Pre-op and Post-op appointments were thorough, never rushed, all my questions were answered, and all my needs were met. If you want the best possible surgeon to determine the success of correcting your urogynecology issues. I highly recommend Doctor Larry Bowen. I will not ever visit Dr Larry Bowen again. To begin with, he pays no attention to other medical conditions that the patient has and then he tries to belittle the patient with his comments. I've heard that he has the personality of a rock; however, I feel that is insulting to the rock. I had surgery on June 22, 2018 and have been in pain ever since that date. I've been on 7 different antibiotics with little relief. But, the straw that broke the camel's back was when he preformed at cystscopy. He gave me NO pain reliever at all. This is an extremely painful procedure for the patient. When he completed the procedure, his comment was "I could have put you in the hospital so you could sleep through the procedure." He is completely unfeeling about the patient. I urge you to not become a patient of his at any time. read more

I don't normally write a review, in fact, this is my first one, but it's my civic duty as a human being, and as a NURSE to write this. My 79 year-old grandmother started seeing him for a prolapse issue, and started almost two years ago. His manners FROM THE START, was rude, conceited, and pompous. We set it aside for the sake of my grandmother, and the need to get her this surgery. THEE ONLY thing I will say in their defense, and to be fair, is I couldn't always make the appointments for her because I suffered my own health issues and hers at the time, and my grandmother is essentially wheel-chair bound, and it's JUST ME taking care of her.. Now, with that said, starting in April of 2014, she started having HORRIBLE INFECTIONS, and started what turned out to be a NIGHTMARE FOR US PHYSICALLY of endless infections a total of 35-40 (basically 1-2 a week for a straight 6 months to be exact) from April of last year to December of 2014. She was in and out of acute care hospitals, a rehab hospital, and numerous visits to SNF's (skilled nursing facilities). The infections, I'm not blaming on him at all. We now know that she kept getting infections because of her CONSTANTLY RETAINING URINE, w/ an inability to expel all of it, and we are STILL in the process of finding out why. But no thanks to Dr. Bowen. HE ARROGANT. AND DOES NOT CARE HOW ANYTHING EFFECTS ANYONE. My grandmother had her surgery about 5-6 months ago now. PLEASE bare in mind my grandmother is 79 & wheel chair bound basically, only able to stand & walk distances of 10ft or less at a time. TWO DAYS after her surgery he yells at my SWEET GRANDMA THAT EVERYONE LOVES WHERE EVER SHE GOES, and says "Why aren't u walking?" Her reply- "I can't, I have another infection", him- "Well, I've never seen u walk before so what makes u think ur EVER going to walk again?"... Me, my grandmother and the nurse at the hospital WERE HORRIFIED!! He then proceeded to yell at me and say- "I just didn't want to "DO MY JOB" as a caregiver", he then said what horrible family I have because they weren't willing to abandon their jobs and come up to help, even though they couldn't. He then proceeds to yell at the nurse for something. I ran from the hospital in tears. I called the hospital back 3 hours later and they BEGGED ME TO REPORT HIM. They told me he is CONSTANTLY abusive to their staff. So, I was happy to oblige. And luckily, my grandmothers been in all these places, so we haven't HAD to deal with him until just recently. Back in Dec, she HAD to have a foley inserted because she was CONSTANTLY GETTING MDRO infections 12-13 total, that's not counting all the regular and c-diff infections she got, and this WITHOUT A FOLEY, since having her foley? 1 infection. And it was treated with ampicillin. She has had a Foley in since DECEMBER. This is thee LONGEST she has gone now WITHOUT an infection since April. That's because I am doing such intense care in keeping her infection free. So now u all know WHY my grandmother HAS to have one. HAS TO. Without one, her life is at SIGNIFICANT RISK because she's got other neurological issues down there. You think Bowen cared? NOT ONE BIT. Out the foley came, well within ONE NIGHT she started retaining 300 mLs. They are concerned with 250mLs and above. Just 3 months ago it took her three weeks to start retaining that much. So, it's getting worse. You think he cared? ABSOLUTELY NOT. He leaves me a SCATHING MESSAGE saying- (AND YES, THESE ARE HIS EXACT WORDS) "We agreed U would keep the foley out of her, I DONT CARE ABOUT SEDIMENT, I DONT CARE ABOUT INFECTION, I JUST WANT THE FOLEY OUT OF HER" ARE U KIDDING ME???? A Doctor that actually ADMITTED he wasn't worried about infection??? WHAT THE HELL ELSE ARE U WORRIED ABOUT IF UR NOT WORRIED ABOUT INFECTION. Her therapist, social worker, my parents and family had to ask or listen to the message 3-4 times to make sure they heard or asked right. That was IT for us. We are NEVER going back to him, and are NOW seeking another doctor to go to. Yes, thank u for the surgery, but NO ONE has to be treated with ABUSE LIKE THAT. We are also in the process of making a complaint to the medical board since that's the ONLY way apparently U can make a complaint for him. Sutter won't take it because he is "Sutter Independent Doctor"... I should also note, that in November, when she was fighting one of her many Multi Drug Resistant Organism (MDRO) Infections, and this was her third time ALMOST DYING, his advice while I'm crying on the phone- "Well, UR grandmas always gonna get them, so maybe u should just face facts and walk away" Yah, a DOCTOR telling me- "HO HUM, Just get used to it, she's gonna die". PLEASE for the Love of God, DONT GO TO HIM. Who cares if he is a good surgeon, he belittles, and abuses patients, and his staff makes excuses for him. His PA admitted his bedside manners sucked, but said "people should just listen"..... Ummm, NO, we don't have to take that. PLEASE DONT GO TO HIM. PLEASE. read more

Dr. Larry Bowen operated on me on 11/2/18. I thought he was the Best at what he does since he did someone I know's, reconstructive surgery 15yrs. ago. People change in 15-20yrs. Unfortunately, he does not Listen to his patients needs. I had a Hysterectomy, Cystocele and Rectocele surgery. 3 in 1 and it has been a horrible recovery. On 11/6/18, I called Dr. Bowen because I had remembered that when I had my emergency back surgery in 2010, the typical catheter size 16Frnch is too big for me. He yelled at me. He said, "I don't get patients calling me at 6:30am worried about their catheter size." I was just in tears and eversince, I will not see him without a family member. I had a catheter in for over 2 weeks. Then at my 6wk Post-op appointment, he said, in front of a Family member, "I need you to get your mind around Self-cathing at work." I told him, "No, I can't do that." He went on to say, "I have many patients with MS who self-cath at work." I said, "I don't have MS." When I told my Son's Pediatrician this, she thought it was Absurd for him to even suggest that. She said, "You will need 10yrs. to wrap your mind around that one." On 12/14, Dr. Bowen called me and told me that I was obstructed and that I would need another surgery. I asked him if I could have 2 extra weeks off from work and he said an affirmative, "No". I had my 2nd surgery on 12/20/18. Dr. Bowen called me on 12/26/18, I told him that I'm going 14x's a day and he said, you need to Self-cath to see if your emptying all the way. Take 2 measurements. I also explained that I am experiencing pain. I asked him again if he would extend my time to 2wks. He said, "No" again. Eventhough my blood work is terrible and now having to Self-cath again. Talk about going backwards! I am researching and looking for a good Urogynecologist who Listens to their patients. If you know of one, please let me know. read more

I am proud to say that I knew Dr. Larry Bowen when he was Student Body President at Skyline High School in 1969 in Salt Lake City,Utah and he was the star middle line backer when they took state in Utah. He was so dedicated to whatever he was involved with and he always cared about others. He was a outstanding individual who was so dedicated to his church that he served a successful mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints for two years and he saved his own pennies for that mission growing up. He was always driven in life to excellence, straight A in all of his school grades. I always knew he would be an outstanding citizen,father and doctor. He is a great example of a well educated man who chose to serve others on a daily basis. I believe who ever goes to him will be richly blessed to have his doctors care. In 1993, at the age of 46, I saw Dr. Bowen for treatment due to incontinence. I found Dr. Bowen to be professional, compassionate, friendly, extremely knowledgeable and would recommend him to everyone. He is a serious doctor, tells the truth and outlines any treatment plans in advance. I believe he genuinely cares for his patients and their lives during and following surgery. Dr. Bowen's treatment for my incontinence was to put a sling in place. However, during the surgery he discovered that my previous gynecologist had failed to remove part of an ovary during my hysterectomy 15 years before. He removed the partial ovary and also repaired a vaginal hernia. The surgery was 6 hours in duration and I suffered some restless leg syndrome following the surgery. He made suggestions for improving that condition and made himself available to me at any hour of the day or night. Now, at the age of 79, I am a healthy, normal and somewhat feisty woman. If I had the opportunity to see Dr. Bowen today, I would thank him again for his remarkable and professional care. I live in Southern CA now or I would continue to see him now. read more
