I believe this space was a Burmese restaurant called Tharaphu a few years back. They made a decent tea leaf salad but without the tableside show. I doubt that made much difference to their clientele, but in its place is another family-run business, this time Salvadoran. This one offers more generic plates at student-friendly prices for undiscriminating palates. That's at least my take in the couple of occasions I've tried it after going to the gym. The first time I tried it I couldn't see the menu until I got up to the order counter. Then I made the server wait since the menu was so comprehensive (Photo 5). I went basic and ordered the $16.99 Chicken Platter because the kabob version was five dollars more. It was decent enough though on the bland side with rice, fresh tomato salsa, and a small side salad of iceberg lettuce, sliced cucumber, and radish (Photo 9). The menu mentioned a house white sauce. I didn't see it, but I also didn't miss it either. I came back to try them again. I tried ordering the $14.99 Scrambled Eggs with Beef Chorizo but was told they were out of chorizo. This was looking to be a recurring theme because I was rebuffed the first time when I unsuccessfully ordered the beef gyro. Ironically this time they had the $16.99 Beef Gyro Platter. The rice and salad were identical to my previous platter, the beef was just OK (Photo 10). Here goes, short and sweet. Yes on the pupusas....no on the birria taco. So the pupusa was definitely handmade and 4 stars. Service was super slow and I was one of 3 people there when they opened. Decent carne asada fries! They are crispy if eaten quickly, perfectly topped, and have okay flavor and seasoning. Their pupusas are also very flavorful and great! The outer shell is crunchy while the inside is tender and flavorful. The restaurant is pretty dark to eat in, and they do use cardboard for their fries which can be very soggy. It is also quite busy at times so the wait can be long as well-- which is why it's 4! The fries are ~$14 after tax though which is on the pricier side. I recommend eating in for the food as it is fresh and the condensation can really sober up the food. They also sometimes give a bag of marinated veggies which I really enjoyed, but I noticed that they stopped this during my last two orders. However, the red sauce and veggies were complimentary the times before. The Mexican horchata and Salvadorean horchata tasted relatively the same, both were on the sweeter side. read more

Delicious!! I had no leftovers which is crazy for me since i always have a hard time finishing my meals. I got pupusas with loroco and some platano. This is my reward meal for long study sessions lol. Service is okay, you really just order and sit down. Best Al pastor mulita I have had! Super flavorful and a good sized portion. Also ordered the revuelta pupusa, which was really good and again a great portion size for the money. The pastelitos were both filling and delicious and for dessert we tried the churros which were crispy, flaky and filled with yummy goodness. They are thick, dense, sweet, and very filling and a great choice if you like plantains and/or pastries or carbs in general. This is by far the best Salvadorian food that I have ever had. Everything is freshly made. It won't come out fast as it's all freshly made from pupusas, tortillas, beans and Yucca con chicharon. Hi I visited this place while working I placed an order through the phone and I thought this place was amazing the pupusas were great!! So I decided to take my friends there the week after for breakfast, we order and it got pretty busy so it took a minute for us to get our food, once again the pupusas AMAZING!! BUT service not so great, this is a Salvadorian place I don't understand how the cashier barely spoke any Spanish to us, but not just that as a Salvadorian I feel really disappointed and disrespected because we love SALSA on our pupusas along with CURTIDO and this is literally the only place I've gone that don't have a big container of salsa/curtido, I asked the girl that was serving our table like 5 times for more salsa because every time she could come back with a super tiny little container that didn't even had enough for 1 pupusa, and she would make faces, like i understand it was annoying but us Salvadorians love a lot of salsa in our pupusas.. AND they forgot one item. I did finally get it but was told I never order it when in fact I did, and this wouldn't have happened if 2 waitresses would have taken my order. I used to come here and enjoy the lunch specials with Horchata Salvadoreña and a few months ago I would've recommended this place to anyone. However I came pretty recently and the Horchata was lacking any flavor from spices and it was brown from all the chocolate they added to compensate for lack of flavor. The cabbage was okay and the tomato salsa added some flavor to the pupusa. Very clever how they manipulated the charge so that only the maximum tip was available and everything seemed to be in a language where you couldn't deny giving full tip if you wanted to change to 15% or 10%. Im not against tipping but, really? Seemed strange to me at least. This place has changed and I would not come back. read more

I LOVE pupusas! And this place knows how to make them delicious! I stopped by with a friend after class and got 2 beans and cheese pupusas. They took about 10-15 minutes to make my order. The pupusas were fresh off the grill and came with a side of salsa and curtido. Many places will give you curtido that is too fresh (you gotta let it sit for a while!) but this place did it just right. The salsa paired well with the pupusas and was very flavorful. The pupusas themselves were sooooooo good. They were super cheesy and warm and just literally perfect. I love when the cheese oozes out and gets crispy which you can see happened with my pupusas. The masa was well cooked and had a good flavor to it. My only suggestions are that the pupusa were a bit more oily than I like and I wish there was more beans. The pupusa was like 70% cheese and 30% bean and while that may be what some enjoy I prefer a little more bean. These are both pretty minor things and I would say the taste, price, and experience made me be able to see past that. read more

Never been to Berkeley before and have been feeling home sick for pupusas, I gave this place a try. I'm super picky with my pupusas sadly because of my grandma spoiling me. I got revueltas (pork, cheese, and bean), bean and cheese, and just cheese pupusas. I think the pork was lacking a little bit of seasoning. The beans were yummy and the cheese was stringy. I also ordered the empanadas and they were delicious. I got the plátanos and they were also great. The curtido was not as pickled as much as I'm use to. The salsa for the pupusas were also lacking some salt. Lastly I got the horchata, and it reminded me of home. It was a great experience and I don't mind coming again. I finally found my pupusa place!
