We got three cheese and bean pupusas today with extra curtido for 2.50. These are the best pupusas in the East Bay. Large, stuffed generously and just delicious. We loved their red spicy sauce and super crunchy fresh curtido. They are packed into small zip lock bags. I forgot to take photos since I was hungry. This little shop is in the middle of nowhere next to a small auto parts shop and parking is limited. The immediate area is ugly and industrial but the pupusas keep us coming back. Best taken to go. It's not a comfortable spot to eat in. We paid 4 dollars per pupusa to go. Friendly staff. Highly recommended. read more

The freshest most authentic Salvadoran food I've ever had. Recently, I came and ate here twice in one day it was so good. My go to is the 3/$12 Revuelta pupusas and the Plantains with the beans . Top tier beans and plantains. I am so glad I found this place. It is very close to my work. I do recommend calling in your order at least 30 minutes before so that it'll be ready for you to pick up. sometimes they do not answer their phone but they will give you a call back. Keep in mind they do not accept tap pay, but they do accept Zelle and Venmo if you need to make a mobile payment. It is small and cozy inside but there are at least 4 tables if you want to dine in. They do have a few tvs if you were there to relax while waiting or out with your family. Being new to the area, this place will definitely be my go to for pupusas. read more

I was looking up places with traditional Salvadoran food. This place was about 30+ minutes out from me but I'm glad I took the drive! Food was delicious. The pupusas are the perfect serving size. El Chalateco is my go-to spot for pupusas!! I had my favorite place in Hayward and San Jose for pupusas and have been on the hunt for a good place close to home. One bite and I knew these were it! The pupusas always come out hot and fresh, perfectly filled and accompanied with plenty of curtido. I also love getting their platano frito plate, I just wished it came with more crema. I asked about non-pork pupusa options since my husband doesn't eat pork, and the lady suggested bean and cheese, which was fine. When I went to order, she informed me there was a minimum order of three pupusas--each costing $3.99. This felt excessive for a meal, especially since pupusas are very large, heavy, and calorie-dense (roughly 350-400 calories each). Asking customers to buy a minimum of three pupusas--which could total over 1,000 calories . What made the situation worse was that this policy wasn't clearly communicated. The sign stating the minimum order was tucked away, not visible where customers stand, and written in spanish ‍ When I tried to clarify, the employee was dismissive and came across as arrogant in my opinion. I ended up leaving without ordering because the minimum order didn't make sense for my needs. While I understand the business might have reasons for this policy, it's not practical or customer-friendly, especially for those who want a smaller, balanced meal. I'd recommend they rethink the policy or at least clearly communicate it upfront to avoid situations like this. Ambiance was wack it was dead inside. read more

Papusas were good, but service was non-existent. I was asked whether I was dining in or taking out and I replied that I was dining in. The guy asked if I wanted any drinks and I told him, no, just water. He said that he had no water. I paid an 18.6% tip on the pre-tax price or 17% on the total with taxes. Even though there was only one other table of 4 people, the food took a while for me and my girlfriend. I was surprised when the cashier asked me to come pick up the food at the counter, which was bagged and in styrofoam containers, with no utensils. I told the guy that I had requested dine-in and needed some forks. He said that he had no forks and gave me 2 plastic spoons and 2 plastic knives. At that point I decided to just take the food to go. Did you all know there is an El Salvadorean restaurant in Martinez? Freshly made pupusas are available so close, six days a week! I popped into El Chalateco on Pacheco Blvd. next to Just Smog It to try one, but I ordered three, and they were delicious! I tried cheese and jalapeno and pork and cheese; the pork and cheese was my favorite. The slaw and sauce were both terrific. The owner wanted me to try the new charred Al Pastor that he's working on for a new dish and their rice, which were both wonderful. I thought, do I have a tattoo on my forehead that says I'm a foodie. So I introduced myself and invited Carmillo and his wife, Elizabeth, to join our group. Carmillo whipped up some El Salvadorean Sopa de Res with tender beef and veggies and a flavorful broth for me. They will also cater events and make special vegetarian dishes for their customers. Carmillo and Elizabeth are so kind. They got their start by running a food booth at the Richmond Flea Market. They have a 45' x 45' space at the flea market every Saturday and Sunday. They opened El Chalateco in Martinez about six months ago and have some exciting plans for the future. They said business is pretty good on weekdays with all of the construction and landscaping crews, but it can be a bit slow during the day on weekends. They're also hiring! The Pupusas were made right then and there, so it took a little bit of time, but the wait was worth it! If you're impatient, just order ahead of time and pick up. I wish this place nothing but success because it's hard to get some good pupusas around here in central county. Glad they took the leap of faith to come to our town! If they can work on anything, it would be the ambiance. Finally a great pupusa place in the Martinez area. I usually would have to go to Richmond for decent Salvadoran food, but now I have a place to go in my back yard. I spoke to the owner for a while and he tells me he originally started his business in Richmond, but recently took the leap and opened a restaurant in the Martinez area. The owner prides himself on making flavorful pupusa without the heavy use of lard. He makes everything from scratch and his recipe are from the old country. For those complaining of the time it takes to receive an order of pupusas, my mom makes these at home and they need to be made at time of order and it's NOT an easy process. If they make a bunch of these before hand and leave them in a warmer they suck so just be patient. They are good because they are freshly made. If you're starving always call ahead.
