My husband is a big foodie, so whenever we're in Berkeley, we always look for a place to stop and enjoy something delicious. This time, I stopped in to pick up some pan dulce, and I had such a wonderful experience. As soon as I walked in, I was warmly greeted by the cashier. I don't remember her name, but she told me she was from Nicaragua. Her kindness, friendliness, and genuine smile immediately made me feel welcome. It may seem like a small gesture, but great customer service makes such a big difference. We all get so busy and distracted these days that sometimes we forget how meaningful a warm greeting can be. She truly brightened my day, and I wanted to take a moment to thank her for making me feel so welcome. DAMNNNNNNNNNNN this had to be the WORST pan and concha I have eaten in a while. I went there this morning to treat myself to some delicious conchas and I can't believe how dry, tasteless and OLD it was. Shame on them for selling old baked goods. Best Bay Area burrito I have had yet. Went with chicken chili Colorado. Flavor of the meat was outstanding. The burrito did have some rice but wasn't packed with rice like a lot of places. Good mix of quality ingredients but the star of the show is definitely the meat. Will be back. read more

I'm very disappointed with this place. It used to be one of my favorites, but the quality keeps getting worse, and this last visit was the final straw. I ordered the enfrijoladas, and to start with, the presentation was terrible, not appetizing at all. It literally looked like tortillas with a few spoonfuls of beans thrown on top. And as a Mexican, I can absolutely tell when refried beans come from a can... the flavor tasted artificial and completely lacked seasoning. On top of that, the dish was supposed to come with avocado, and it didn't even have that. My husband ordered a burrito, and it was also extremely bland, flavorless, and the portions were surprisingly small for the price. It's honestly sad to see a place that used to be worth visiting now serving food with so little care, flavor, or effort in presentation and quality. Even the traditional panderia inside the restaurant had me drooling when I ordered my Nopalitos tacos, some of the best I've ever had too and they ain't skimping and you're getting legit Oaxaca cheese! When taking a look at the menu they have some of the best traditional offerings and a very Popular Mole too! lots of yummy choices to choose from. The Ambience consists of a home feel with traditional and cozy accents that are well represented. First of all ,I've been itching to try this place for quite some time ,and I'm so glad I did ! The place felt a little like I was walking into a place somewhere in Mexico . You order at the counter when you walk in , and they have a nice table set up for crema ,napkins ,and utensils . As I walked around to find a place to sit ,I was amazed at all Of the wall art of Frida Kahlo . I absolutely love Frida and loved seeing her all over inside of this place . We've visited a few times and enjoyed our meals. My favorite is the chicken enchiladas with their green sauce. It is SO flavorful. Their crema is also very good. We've tried a few pastries and they were good as well. Definitely something to have with coffee. We went for taco Tuesday and their taco selection was limited for the special. We ended up ordering tacos off the regular menu. They were all just okay and I would try other places for tacos. All in all, casa Latina is a cute place to grab a quick bite. read more

I had a sweet tooth and wanted some pastries, so we pulled over at this CUTE lil spot, when I walked in I felt the warmness of this place, the lady behind the counter was the sweetest! I grabbed a couple of pastries and 2 Hot Chocolate because it was cold outside. Can I just say; EVERYTHING I placed on the platter and she packed into the bag was DELICIOUS!! Talking about it makes me want to go back, but I know if the pastries were good, we will have to circle back to try the food. The ambiance in there was CUTE! I have yet and when I say YET, I mean I have YET to walk in to a CUTE restaurant, go into the BATHROOM and fall in love with their bathroom, I mean call me silly, but go take a detour into that bathroom and you will know exactly what I'm talking about! From what I understand, my girlfriend mentioned to me Casa Latina may have gone through a management change because when she had it a few years back, the food wasn't remotely as good as it was now. When we returned over the weekend, she said the food was soulful, thought out, and delicious. And I echo those sentiments. For those who are lactose intolerant, we ordered a carne asada burrito with no cheese and light sour cream. The burrito was probably one of the best we had here in the east bay. The carne asada was so moist and seasoned perfectly. While the rest was filled with a beautifully seasoned guac. You're truly not missing out at all without the dairy products and highly recommend Casa Latina for your Mexican food cravings. They also sell baked goods, the Concha's here were perfectly and lightly sweetened. The inside was moist and we can see why they sell out daily. Last but not least don't sleep on the chips and guac. The chips are so fresh and made in house. My only feedback is a little more chips to balance out the guac would be nice but the flavors are spot on. I found out about Casa Latina through a friend and I'm really glad I did. So far I've only tried their desserts, and wow. both the Leche Flan and the Tres Leches cake were incredible. The flan was one of the best I've ever had. It was super silky with a perfect texture and just the right amount of sweetness. The Tres Leches cake was also great--super moist with a nice touch of strawberry flavor and a few real strawberries scattered in. The cinnamon was a little strong for my taste, but it was still really good. They've got a small bakery inside with cookies, cakes, and other classic Mexican treats. I haven't tried their carrot cake yet but it's definitely on my list. The vibe inside is cozy and a little rustic, with a casual charm that makes you want to hang out for a bit. There's also a full menu with espresso drinks, breakfast, tacos, burritos, and Latin American dishes. I haven't tried the food yet but it all looks promising. Parking is street only, but it hasn't been too hard to find a spot since the area isn't super busy. Highly recommend checking this place out, especially for their desserts. Expensive and underwhelming experience. The Platos Grande were not worth the price point unfortunately, many of us left still hungry. The Barbacoa was undersalted, the Carne Asada was chewy, and the Carnitas was a bit tough and oversalted. It was extremely disappointing how the majority of the proteins came out warm, not hot. Casa Latina with its happy but very busy workers, featuring Mexican food and bakery. Entering I noticed orders were taken at the counter (no table waiter, but some orders are delivered). High ceiling and hard floors make it a little noisy but the food makes up for it. Plenty of seating for a sorts of choices to seat. I ordered the Micheladas to drink. It was made with a dark beer this time. Fun changing it up. We ordered to share and a lot of food stated arriving at the table. Plenty of red and or green salsa for the asking. We got guacamole with chips (the guac was awesome). Also Empanadas, Platanos, tacos and a burrito, Mole Poblano, and more. It was a feast. I happily noticed the portions are huge and delish. Taco Tuesday? Say less! Companion suggested we grab some tacos and I thought it was a great idea. We chose Casa Latina as it was our first time dining there together. The restaurant's environment is brightly colored, with neighborhood vibes, and art sprawled throughout. It's the right-sized restaurant for small or larger parties as seating is all self-service. The workers are all courteous and ordering is done at the front with limited interactions. There's a lot to take in in terms of the food. Traditional and nontraditional Mexican and Latin American foods, plus a bakery! I've had their pastries before but not their tacos in a while. I got the Carnitas Taco and my companion had the Al Pastor Taco; both were discounted for taco Tuesday. The carnitas taco was the juiciest taco I've ever had--literally, juice wouldn't stop spilling it. The carnitas was good but could've had more flavor while my companion's Al pastor was dry. Both tacos had some heat due to the salsa, I'd opt for it on the side next time. Berkeley has a variety of options for Mexican food. Casa Latina is pretty good for prices and portions, but I wouldn't actively seek this restaurant out. Parking is street only and the restaurant is found off San Pablo Ave. read more

Had a nice brunch here today with a friend and our kids. It's a nice casual vibe so easy to bring kids that need to constantly run around a bit. Hello all, I ordered 2 al pastor burritos and a set of 2 pupusas, to go. I've visited Casa Latina a few times prior to this and while the prices aren't the best, you get what you pay for and it's usually great and balanced. Service is usually fine and okay, nothing crazy good but decent. However, in my most patronage I received my order with little to no sauce (1 cup for 2 burritos and worst of all, the pupusas brought no salsa or curtido (coleslaw). As a Salvadoran, it's not only wrong but a little insulting to charge 5 dollars per pupusa and on top of that, it seems the toppings come at a price too. It's like salsa to a burrito or cilantro and onion to tacos; it just comes together and paying $12 w tax for 2 pupusas to recurve 0 sauce or coleslaw is just ridiculous. Also the 1 salsa for 2 burritos is another amazing one, I felt scammed and while the flavor of the food was fine, it's just missing something when the sides aren't included yet you're $40 down. It's a good place but the stinginess that i experienced my latest time has made me reconsider coming here again, recommending it, and prompted me to make this review. The food is usually great. The mole is awesome--it's super flavorful and has a sweet richness. The flautas are super crispy without being too oily. I also enjoyed the tartness of the hibiscus agua fresca. The chile verde had tender pork with a nice lime flavor from the sauce. However, it was room temperature when it came to the table. The rice and beans were as well. That wasn't a major issue for me, but I figured it was worth mentioning. Overall, it was a pretty solid meal. As far as ambiance goes, it's a small space with concrete walls, so voices echo a lot and it can get loud really fast. My boyfriend and I went with his elderly grandmother and she had a hard time hearing us, so keep that in mind if you're dining with a hard of hearing person. Absolutely. Just one, and you'll need a key. I think the cost is on the higher side, but not much more than similar restaurants in the area. The interior is nicely decorated, with a large mirror and some Frida artwork. The food is solid. I love their chips! They're so well-seasoned. Some of the bakery items have not been my favorite, but they're okay. My husband loves to order the chile verde burrito, which is gigantic. I will usually order pupusas (technically not Mexican food, these hail from El Salvador). The portion size is great. This place is really top notch. It's both cozy, vibrant and a hidden gem. The food quality and presentation is 5star. I would have never expected to pay this much for this style of food until I came here. I've been here 3 times and I can firmly and proudly say yes, the prices are worth it. Now about the food!
